The Calm before the Storm

It's December 1986. Hulk Hogan, Vince McMahon and Cyndi Lauper, among other celebrities and members of the media, are gathered at Universal Studios for a taping of The Tonight Show. Early in the afternoon, a ceremony is taking place, in which Hogan, The WWF and Cyndi Lauper are being presented a donation on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Association for their continued support.

A huge group of media, both internationally as well as National are on hand. MTV is also carrying the event live on its network. After a brief speech by WWF Head Vince McMahon, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan takes the podium and thanks the MD Association, as well as MTV and other parties for their continued group efforts. As Hogan and Lauper stand holding the donation check, and the flashbulbs pop, a loud disturbance is heard in the crowd. Security can be seen escorting a pair of gentlemen from the area, however it's unknown just who they are. The incident is quickly dismissed as probably some hecklers in the crowd. A couple of weeks pass and as Hogan and Capt Lou Albano are arriving in New York City for an appearance on Saturday Night Live, they're met in the airport by a huge media group.

Entertainment Tonight approaches Hogan for a quick comment, when again, just as a few weeks earlier, a ruckus seems to be breaking out not far away.
The crowd gathered to watch the fracas blocks the view of Hogan, who asks his friend Albano what is going on. As Albano looks towards the area with a concerned look on his face, he quickly leads the champ away.

Its nothing Hulk..Say we gotta get going..Lets go. Albano directs his friend as they hail a taxi and head for the hotel. That Saturday night, a capacity crowd is on hand at the SNL studio. Hogan arrives to a huge ovation. Security quickly escorts him and Albano to their dressing room to prepare for the nights show. Prior to SNL going live, Hogan and Albano are surprised to see their employer Vince McMahon make a surprise arrival. He exchanges pleasantries with the men as
they sit down for a quick word. McMahons face shows a very concerned look, one that Hogan has NEVER seen and that Albano hasn't seen in a long time. Hogan asks his boss what the trouble is. McMahon seems almost hesitant to respond, but finally speaking.

Well, Ya see Hulk..You have to believe me when I say, I had NO way of knowing this would happen. I never dreamed in a million years that anything like THIS would ever come of it.

Hogan looks at his boss with a look of total bewilderment. Before he ask any more questions, a knock on the door informs them they have 5 minutes before they go live. The conversation never goes any further.

The Challenge and the response
The next day, Hogan, Albano and McMahon are among several celebrities gathered at a press conference promoting a new working arrangement between MS and the WWF. As Hogan takes the podium after being introduced by Bob Costas as 'The Greatest Wrestler in the world', an assumed heckler from the crowd breaks past security and gets onto the stage. Albano and McMahons eyes nearly jump out of their head. The 'heckler' is actually Ivan Koloff. Koloff points a finger at a confused Hogan as the cameras flash. McMahon screams for security to remove him from the stage, but the press and security laugh as they assume this is a publicity stunt Meanwhile Koloff goes on a tirade:

Hulk Hogan, you have dodged our phone calls. Letters sent to you are never answered. We have tried all kinds of professional methods to make our challenge known. We tried to approach you at this charity event you attended, but you hired many security guards to prevent us from talking to you. In the airport, you hide again. We wanted to make this a civil and respectable challenge, But you have dodged us, you hide behind this American Media. You say you are a champion that will face all comers. You stand up here and you LIE to these American fans. They look up to you and they will believe whatever you tell them. Well..the time has come, Hulk Hogan. The time for you to face YOUR reality is at hand..

The crowd starts to stir and those on the stage back away as Hogan steps forward and he and Ivan are but inches apart. Hogan answers the Russian:

You know something Ivan Koloff..you got alot of gall dude. You say you wanna throw down a challenge to Hulk Hogan..Im not hard to find brother!! I won my WWF World title from one mean and nasty foreigner and I GLADLY put it up against another one!! You just name the time and place and Hulk Hogan will be there and show YOU what it feels like to have Hulkamania run wild on you!!

Koloff smiles a sinister and evil smile. He opens his jacket and produces a document. He opens it and shoves it into Hogans' chest. Hogan snatches it and takes the pen. McMahon suddenly jumps between the men and attempts to interrupt, but is stopped by the WWF Champion.

Hang on Vince!! I got this!! This guy wants a shot at the WWF World title, hes GOT it brother!! Hogan scribbles his name on the document without reading it. McMahons eyes widen in shock as Hogan shoves the document back at Koloff. Then starts to tear his shirt from his body in usual Hogan fashion.

But let me tell YOU something Ivan Koloff.you were a great champion once, and you beat a great champion in Bruno Sammartino, but this is 1986 dude, its NOT 1966 and WHATCHA GONNA DO....

Hogan is interrupted as Koloff tries a sucker punch, he blocks it and returns fire...Ivan is knocked down by a mammoth right from The Hulkster. The media and others on stage quickly scramble as Hogan stands over his fallen and dazed adversary, when suddenly from nowhere, the champion is taken down from behind by a massive blow to the head. Hogan lies nearly unconcious as over him stands NWA World Heavyweight Champion Nikita Koloff!! Koloff glares at the fallen Hogan, then as Uncle Ivan gets to his feet, Koloff lays a series of hard kicks to the ribs, keeping Hogan on the floor as security try in vein to get control of the situation. Nikita fights wildly as the overmatched smaller security personnel are held off. McMahon screams at Koloff as Ivan taunts him, as he, too, fends security off with his Russian chain. Nikita poises himself behind the champion, who tries to get to his feet, and the moment he stands, Nikita blasts him with a Russian Sickle that nearly cuts Hogan in half. The fans and spectators scream in shock as Koloff brings Hogan to his knees and locks in the Cobra Clutch!!! Finally security manages to drive Ivan back and they try to break this Russian monsters grip, as Hogan slumps to the floor, the back of his head bleeding from the initial shot he took. Only the arrival of armed police finally manage to stop the assault by Koloff. At least a dozen officers converge on the area, as EMT medics quickly come to the fallen Hogans aid. Nikita is, after a brief struggle with police, placed in handcuffs, as is Ivan and the men are taken to police headquarters. Meanwhile Hogan, who is still unresponsive, is placed in an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

The fallout

The Following day, there is total chaos within the WWF Offices. The phones ring non stop as both fans and media from all over the world are demanding to know the status of the WWF champion Hulk Hogan as well as what the result of a non WWF wrestler attacking Hogan will be.
A spokesman for the WWF informs the huge media group gathered outside the offices that there is 'No official Comment' at this time. Meanwhile, Inside Titan Towers, the scene is a free for all. Promoters are on the phones, frantically trying to reschedule title defenses as far away as Tokyo Japan. Intercontinental champion Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine is informed he will be appearing on all upcoming booking dates, Valentine will assume defenses of the WWF title, until further notice. the next scheduled title defense set to take place in the Cow Palace in San Francisco against Hercules will take place. Across the city, in a New York City courtroom, Nikita and Ivan Koloff are found guilty of trespassing and creating a domestic disturbance as a result of the incident with Hogan. Curiously, no charges of assault and or battery are ever mentioned. The Koloffs pay a huge fine and are sentenced to time already served. They settle the matter with the court officers and quickly exit the courtroom where, among other media outlets, Fox Sports and ESPN are waiting. Ivan fields questions as Nikita remains silent.

Yes this is true, we have been found guilty of a mere misdemeanor by this American Justice system. But we are not the ones who deserve to be on trial here. It is Hulk Hogan who deserves to be on trial. He is the one who has committed the crime. Not nephew Nikita and myself. Nephew Nikita is NWA World Heavyweight Champion. He is a proud champion. A FIGHTING champion as you Americans would say. He faced and destroyed this Magnum T.A. to win World Heavyweight title. He has issued, many times I might add, challenges to Hulk Hogan. Challenges to see just WHO is the better man. And every time this Hulk Hogan has dodged nephew Nikita, he has run like the coward he is. Nikita and myself did not WANT to take this avenue. We are proud Russians, we believe in the spirit of fair play,. but Hulk Hogan has chosen to hide behind the Hulkamania image. Yes the colors of Hulkamania are indeed yellow and red..yellow to represent the coward that Hulk Hogan is, and Red to represent the blood that shall flow from Hulk Hogans veins, as nephew Nikita destroys him once and for all!!

Nikita refuses to speak to reporters as he and Ivan quickly leave the area and are escorted to a waiting car, they are accompanied by heavy security as over the last 36 hours, they have received literally hundreds of death threats. Meanwhile across the city, the doctors that have examined Hogan, along with WWF Head Vince McMahon and other WWF officials are preparing the long awaited statement on the status of Hogan. Vince McMahon speaks first:

Ladies and Gentlemen, members of the media, other distinguished guests, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your patience regarding the forthcoming of information on the part of the WWF. As you all are no doubt aware, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan was attacked, an unprovoked attack I might add, by the so called Champion of an inferior organization. This was, unfortunately, unpreventable and we regret that this comes at a time when the WWF champion is usually touring the country and the world, making appearances and title defenses. Due to the nature of Mr Hogans injuries, it would not be out of the question to assume an indefinite period of inactivity. At this time, I would ask Dr James Raleigh, the attending physician to give you all any information he so deems necessary.

Dr Raleigh takes the podium and prepares to speak.

Thank you Mr McMahon. After an extensive examination of Mr Hogan, who for the record IS awake and alert. He is responsive and was just minutes after arriving at the hospital, I can tell you that aside from a serious concussion and a couple of broken ribs,he also has a separated shoulder however he will recover 100%. Im not inclined to give a timetable on when Mr Hogan will be cleared to return, as thats still to be determined. Thank you. The Dr exits the podium as McMahon returns, this time he has a more serious and deliberate look on his face.

The WWF has long been the standard for sportsmanship and athleticism, and in spite of the heinous actions against our champion, we will continue to be such. As I stated earlier, Hulk Hogan was attacked by a so called champion of a inferior organization and with that in mind, it is the decision by the WWF board of directors that Mr Koloff will NOT be granted a match of ANY sort in ANY WWF ring. Ever. Mr Hogan, of course is free to pursue other legal matters upon his completion of his recovery and we will support him in that area. As of today, Mr Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine will assume WWF Title defenses per our request, and the top challenger, according to the WWF Rankings is, at this time, the Mighty Hercules. Thank You.

The press shouts questions at McMahon as he is escorted inside the building and security clears the area. Meanwhile in a hotel room across the city, Ivan Koloff and Nikita watch the events on CNN and are not pleased. Ivan quickly picks up the phone and books 2 plane tickets round trip..for San Francisco California.

Chaos at the Cow Palace
The Cow Palace is sold out, indeed there were about 2000 tickets sold the afternoon of the event, in hopes that WWF history might be made, and a new champion might be possibly crowned.
Both Valentine, accompanied by Johnny V and Hercules, accompanied by Slick, are introduced and met with a resounding chorus of boos, however Valentine does seem to have his share of supporters from the Hogan fan club; mostly out of appreciation for his assuming Hogans title defense schedule. The match between the 2 rule breakers quickly turns into a slug fest. Hercules attempts to lock Valentine in his full nelson, but 'The Hammer' rocks the strongman with his thunderous rights and elbow smashes. After about 9 minutes of action, a stir is heard in the crowd, suddenly out of nowhere, the now unmistakable presence of Nikita Koloff is felt as the Russian quickly makes his way over the security railing and into the ring!! Referee Earl Hebner is the first to feel the power of the young Russian powerhouse, followed by Hercules, who tries to intercept the NWA Champion. The Strongman from The Roam Empire is taken down by a mighty Russian Sickle. Koloff doesnt even slow down as he next slams his powerful right hand into the face of Valentine, breaking his jaw. Valentine rolls to the arena floor, blood pouring from his mouth and nose. Hercules tries once again to contain Nikita, and is again with another devastating Russian Sickle. Hercules slumps to the mat, nearly unconscious as Ivan quickly grabs the WWF Belt and tosses it into the ring. Nikita grabs the title belt and waits, with a savage and crazed look in his eyes, and then slams the belt across the back of A barely able to stand Hercules. Koloff quickly drops the belt and, again as he did to Hogan, applies a Cobra Clutch on the helpless strongman. The ring is flooded with security as a near riot ensues. The fallen Hercules and Valentine are quickly attended to, as fans start to cross the barrier, a couple of brave young men actually enter the ring, but Nikita almost effortlessly shoves them aside. Police officers quickly secure them before they meet a worse fate. During the melee, Ivan grabs the WWF title belt as he and Nikita are escorted from the ring area and ultimately from the arena. Slick and Johnny V
accompany their respective charges to a local hospital, where the next morning, it is learned that Valentine has suffered a broken jaw and a broken nose. He misses almost 6 months of action. Hercules, however, has suffered a broken neck and never returns to the ring. The WWF is in an almost state of emergency. Vince McMahon puts in a call to Charlotte N.C. and the offices of Jim Crockett Promotions, demanding the immediate return of WWF property, specifically the WWF Title belt. After a private conference call involving Jim Crockett, Ole Anderson, David Crockett and Vince and Shane McMahon as well as WWF Agent Pat Patterson, Crockett releases the following statement:

'Due to the actions of Nikita and Ivan Koloff, against the WWF and specifically Hulk Hogan, we at Jim Crockett Promotions have, after an in depth meeting with our legal department, made the decision to strip Nikita Koloff of the NWA Worlds Heavyweight title and also as of this morning, Nikita and Ivan Koloff are both fired from JCP Sports. We regret this decision and hope the Koloffs will be able to work their legal issues out very soon.'

Vince McMahon is livid as he finds his company still without the title belt that his father helped pioneer. McMahon issues a public statement to the Koloffs, who have, for the moment vanished from the public eye. McMahon offers them $500,000.00 for the immediate return of the title belt.
Through a untraceable phone call to Titan Towers, it is revealed that the Koloffs will indeed return the title on the upcoming house show at Madison Square Garden. WWF Champion Hulk Hogan contacts Vince and demands that he be allowed to attend. Hogan is adamant.

'Listen Vince...that may be your fathers title belt, but it's my PRIDE dude!! That Russian scum sucker punched me from behind and if he, YOU or ANYBODY thinks I'm just gonna sit at home and take this shit..you're dead wrong!! I'll buy the whole damn Garden out, every seat, if thats what it takes!!' McMahon reluctantly agrees. The deal is set. The Koloffs will return the WWF title in the ring, just prior to the main event that night, the match to fill the now vacant Intercontinental Title, between Randy Savage and Kerry Von Erich. It's agreed that Ivan Koloff will come to the ring, with the title, and WWF Agent Sgt Slaughter will, in turn, recieve the title and deliver the $500,000.00 in cash.

The night of the event, the Garden is sold out. Fans are turned away by the thousands. Extra security is hired, several riot officers stand around the ring just in case. Hogan arrives at the Garden, his arm still in a sling, but otherwise seemingly in fair shape. He signs a few autographs before making his way to the Vince McMahon Sr Suite above the Garden. The intermission comes and the lights go up. Sgt Slaughter makes his way to the ring, carrying the agreed upon money to be delivered. After several seconds, Ivan Koloff makes his way, accompanied by security. Slaughter and Ivan meet, in a very tense meeting, as the capacity crowd begins a USA!! chant.
Just as Ivan hands Slaughter the belt, and Slaughter places it in a briefcase, one of the riot officers quickly slides into the ring..its Nikita!! He blindsides the former Marine Drill Instructor, as Ivan quickly grabs the money and the briefcase!! As the security tries to keep the fans away from the ring, Ivan manages to escape through the crowd, while Nikita issues a savage beating to Slaughter!! Hogan and McMahon can only watch from a distance as Nikita leaves Slaughter a bloody mess. In a final act of disrespect, Nikita produces a Hulkamania tshirt and rips it apart.
The Garden crowd is livid as Nikita stands in the backyard of the WWF, and has literally spit on Hulkamania.

Nikita crosses the line
The next day, As virtually every tv station in the United States as well as around the world plays the footage of the chaotic previous night at MSG, MTV airs, live, it Viewers music awards. Among those honored is Hogans 20 yr old daughter Brooke, for her debut single. As Brooke takes the stage and accepts her very first award, the crowd is suddenly in an uproar as, of all people, Nikita, bursts on the stage and screams at the horrified young lady, who is in tears as she begs Koloff to leave her alone. The timely, or untimely, arrival of her brother Nick, serves as a distraction long enough for Brooke to get off the stage. Nick however is punched in the stomach by the herculean Russian, and is quickly taken off the stage. Nikita is escorted from the arena by police and taken, again, to jail.
The next day he posts another bond and is released.

Hogan gets his turn
Vince McMahons office looks like a war zone. Hulk Hogan, having been informed of the previous evenings antics, is livid and rightfully so. McMahon tries, with no success, to calm his champion. Hogan throws a chair against the wall, leaving a massive hole. A color TV shatters a large framed portrait of Vince and his family.

Goddamn it!! That son of a bitch has crossed the line with me!! Ill KILL him..so help me God, Ill kill that red bastard and piss on his communist grave!! Make the match NOW Vince!!
McMahon is still hesitant to oblige his champion. Citing he isn't willing to set a precedent, in which others will come..'out of the woodwork'...and try similar tactics to get a title shot. Hogan grabs Vince by his collar and slams him against the wall.

YOU listen to ME!! That mother fucker put his hands on my SON!! He threatened my daughter!! I could give a shit about the Goddamn WWF OR your fucking belt!! You MAKE..THIS..MATCH..OR..SO HELP ME GOD, I'LL WALK OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW AND NEVER COME BACK!! McMahons eyes widen as he can see Hogan is serious. He tries, again, to reason with him, to no avail.

OK..You wanna be a chicken shit...fine!! I WONT BE!! Hogan declares as he heads toward the door. This aint business brother..its PERSONAL. Ill do it my OWN WAY!! You might wanna pay attention in the next few days!! Hogan warns as he storms from whats left of McMahons office. The following weekend, the WWF is in Los Angeles for a huge show. The Main event is Macho Man Randy Savage vs The Texas Tornado Kerry Von Erich in a steel cage match. Minutes before the main event, security is alerted that the Koloffs have been seen entering the building, having produced tickets for the event. Security does not attempt to stop them, allowing them to take their ringside seats. Savage enters first, and immediately spots the Russian pair and keeps an eye on them. However before Von Erich enters the arena, The Koloffs, again, make an attempt to take down yet another WWF Wrestler. This time they fail huge as, to the shock of everyone in the building, as Nikita, still outside the cage on the floor is distracted by Savage, Hulk Hogan jumps from the crowd and grabs Ivan and throws him inside the cage door and follows, quickly locking the door!! The fans go crazy as Hogan administers a beating to Ivan, Nikita tries to get in but cannot get the door open. After attempting to climb the side of the cage, he is knocked to the floor by Savage, who to the delight of the crowd, stands guard for his rival Hogan. Nikita is a man possessed as he must helplessly watch from the outside as Ivan is beaten and bloodied. The crowd chants USA!! USA!! as Hogan drives his fist into the bloody head of the Russian Villain. Hogan calmly walks tot he cage and spits at Nikita, before returning to his now helpless prey.
As arena security finally get the cage unlocked, they are held at bay as well by Savage. No one can get into the cage to halt the, well deserved, mugging of Ivan at the hands of Hogan. As security continues to try to get in the door, and Savages' well placed boots prevent this, Hogan lands a final and ultimate steel chair shot to the outstretched leg of Ivan, breaking his leg. The Russian screams in pain as finally Savage allows the arena security to enter. The cage fills up as, also, Nikita enters. He rips his jacket and shirt off and stands inches away from the man he has dogged for almost 3 months. Hogan holds the chair up and dares the Russian to charge, but instead Nikita relents and goes to the side of Uncle Ivan, who is carried away on a stretcher.
The next day, WWF Offices get 5000 phone calls demanding a Hogan/Nikita match. McMahon finally agrees and The match is set for Wrestlemania 2.
