This is the Out Of Character (OOC) discussion thread for the WFRP adventure titled "Shadows of the Storm". All comments, questions, queries etc that don't belong in an In Character (IC) post should be posted here. This is also the place where those that aren't taking part in the game can feel free to post their own thoughts should they so wish. The In Character thread is only for the players and Games Master to post in, preserving the flow of the story so that it can be enjoyed with a minimum of confusion by all, hence the creation of this thread for any and all other posting activity. Players can post their characters background and stats in the Character Creation forumhere, allowing them to amend their character sheet using the Edit button as and when they desire during the course of the adventure. I strongly recommend doing this - it means your stats are always handy when you need them, and makes for an easy way for us all to see that any modifications are made correctly as and when needed. Plus its always nice to read about each others characters, as well as bringing all of our info into one thread, rather than having to constantly refer to old PMs . Please note: Recruitment for this game has ended - I will not be taking on any further players in the immediate future. Otherwise, thats all for now. Welcome to the Old World. I'll do my best to make your stay here as unpleasant and dangerous as possible.

Right, characters are being finalised and posted as I type, so I thought I'd provide an example post to help give everyone a clear idea of how this will work in practise (you may have seen this on the Great Crusade forum, but I say, if it ain't broke and only needs copy and pasting...). First, a word or two on posting. We have an "in character" (or IC or "in game" if you like) thread and an "out of character" (or OOC) thread. The IC thread will consist purely of posts written in character and designed to move the game forward. All posts written out of character (e.g. asking questions not specifically related to the scene at hand, praising the GM for a particularly well-written and atmospheric post, discussing the merits of warhammers over pickaxes or whatever...) belong in the OOC thread. That way the flow of the IC thread is maintained, and anyone not playing will be able to read the thread as if it were a straight forward story without having to wade through random posts that break up the prose. All IC posts will be written in the third person (that means no "I will...", "I want to do x..." etc.) and should use the past tense (its the tense most folks are used to reading, and from experience I can assure you all that posting in the present tense is a pain to keep up). IC posts should be written in a third person, narrative manner, explaining what your charactre is doing/thinking/intends to do about the current situation he finds himself in. e.g. A typical Ferrus Manus post might be:
The order in which you respond will (mostly) only matter when the group is in combat, at which time I will advise what order you should post (this is based on Initiative rolls - roll d10 and add the "tens" figure from your Agility. Note: this is a house rule, as the WFRP book version leads to very little variation in order). Don't be afraid to post your characters thoughts, feelings and suspicions when appropriate - the bonus of playing via a message board over tabletop rping is the opportunity to explore these areas of a character that don't normally get seen in live play. These extra details make for a much richer experience when you read back through the posts after they've been written. Together we are writing a story, and thats how I'd like it to look once we are finished. Finally, a good standard of spelling, punctuation and paragraphing is mandatory in posts. Occasional slips are understandable and forgiveable. L33T speak and non-sensical posting is not. As the GM, my word is final, and I'm happy to be an arse over this. Do what you like in the OOC thread, but consider the IC thread sacred and hallowed ground. Do not defile it. Eventually you'll all develop a good grip on the rules (if you haven't already) and will know what to roll for whatever action you wish to take. To begin with you probably won't - don't worry, we'll get through this together. When you do roll, I'd like you to include the roll results as a string along the bottom of your post. E.g. Malvor the initiate attacks a beastman. This requires a WS (Weapon Skill) roll. Ferrus rolls d100 using 2d10 and gets a 1 and a 9 (the order your dice roll is important - first die is tens, second is units. 00 = 100). His post will look something like this:
Malvor's WS is actually 49, which makes a roll of 19 a pass (i.e. the roll is under the WS value). However, as the GM, I may have various modifiers that I want to take into account, which I may not wish to reveal to the players. therefore, even if you think you've passed a test (e.g. the WS test above) don't assume you have - leave your post at the point where you've initiated the action but awaiting the result. My GM result will give you the lowdown on what happened when you attacked/picked the lock/chatted up the damsel etc. In the interests of speeding things up, its good to roll for damage and post the result with your To Hit roll. If you know your weapon's profile, a quick look at the rules section of the book will reveal what your damage roll will be. Again, don't automatically assume you've done damage - by including the roll, I can take the damage into account when I make my GM post (I have to subtract Toughness Bnus and Armour to get the final result), rather than having to go backwards and forwards asking for more rolls. Taking this into account, Ferrus's post might now look like this:
When reading his rolls, I will assume that the first two numbers are his To Hit roll, the third is his total damage (including SB modifier). I can then apply that to my beastman and will post accordingly. Actions - these are really very easy to deal with as long as you've read the relevant section of the rulebook (p.126-128) and understand the fact that you have free, half and full actions available. If you havent read that bit yet, go read it now. Basically when you make your post and write your roll result for whatever action you are taking, simply write the type of action before the roll. For example, a standard shot with a bow would require nothing more than your three figures (first two dice roll figures= BS test, third roll is the total damage you have caused e.g. 3, 4, 6). If you wanted to use the Aim half action before the shot, gaining a bonus to your BS in doing so, you would simply write "Aim" before the roll. using the example above, your post footer will now read "Aim, 3, 4, 6" which tells me everything I need to know for working out the effects of your action. Other examples might be "All Out Attack, x, y, z" or "Channel, x, y, z". Everyone happy with that? If so, I think thats all we really need to discuss before we start playing - anything else that crops up, we'll work out as we go. Once I have enthusiastc nods from the four of you, and assuming there are no further questions, we can crack on. Any questions, please ask. Its the only way they'll get answered. ![]() Edited by Anodyr, Apr 1 2010, 09:55 PM.

Finally, for those that aren't familiar with the game we started at The Great Crusade and who would like to see how the game looked running, I'll point you here. |

Koeh nodded to himself, his head moving in time to the coach's jarring passage along the rutted road to Bogenhafen... "Human travel," he whispered, "how they ever managed to get out of the swamps amazes me." Ready and waiting master!! |

Axel pulled at the reins to stop the cart. The sign outside the Altdorf gate read 'Bogenhafen.' "Well, I guess that's as good a place to start as any," he said to no one in particular. He prodded the pony with his switch. "Let's get moving girly, can't feed you if I don't make no money." Red 4, standing by. |

Just a quickie... I'm noticing in most of the character sheets that people are adding 5 points to an attribute per advance. Should this not be a 5% increase of your base attribute? |

Fraid not dude, recruitment finished a few days ago. However, if I get one more player in the W40k thread you signed up to, we'll be ready to go. |

Fluent -the advance percentage thing is always a bit confusing: as your base stat is a percentage itaself (e.g. with WS 39, you would theoretically hit 39 times out of a hundred, or 39% of the time) when you add 5%, you should add 5 full points rather than 5% of 39. This goes for all Main profile advances, and also counts for talents (e.g. Warrir born adds 5% to WS). Reason I didn't spot it on your profile was because I didn't know what your original roll was for the stat, so go ahead and amend your profile accordingly. Imperial Empire - as Ferrus has already said, we have closed recruitment for this game, but the board is in its early days so stay tuned for more games appearing in the future. Anodyr, I haven't included any talent based attribute increases on my written profile, the scores shown were my original rolls. I shall amend the profile shortly with the cool headed and savvy talents shown. Cheers |

Gotcha - always nice to be adding points rather than taking them away from a profile!
