I'm writing a story and the situation is that the protagonist is 14 and lives with her 19 year-old sister. They truly have no blood relatives, for they belong to another world. The 14 year-old doesn't know this but the sister does. They basically humans from another world living on Earth. They live together alone.

What I ask of you is, what are some ways they come to live normal American lives?
Adoptive earth mother dies of cancer?
Earth dad is a upper-class man earning enough to support two girls in a small town house but lives in a more prosperous state?

I hope that's clearer.
And sorry I don't know what other forum to put this in.

Well, the easiest method is the age-old trick of amnesia. That, of course, is a cop-out though. There are plenty of other explanations you could use. You could say her memory was wiped upon arriving on Earth since her sister didn't trust her not to speak of their origins. Or you could argue that the girl was very young when they first arrived, since children tend to attribute traumatic events in young childhood as being dreams.
But mostly? The assorted plans at play here would be going very, very wrong due to the actions of a no-name, no-count, utterly talentless Magus by the name of Shirou Emiya. He had no magic worth mentioning, no combat experience of note, and no plan for or knowledge of the War he was about to enter. He did, however, have one trait that had derailed a countless number of such grand, far-reaching schemes throughout history.

You see, he really, really wanted to be a hero. -(Best description of the start of a Fate novel ever.)

There, I rephrase the question.

Am I to understand then that you're asking how they came to be alone at the ages they are. An excuse for two teenagers on their own.

Perhaps the older one ran away and brought the younger one along? As you say, a wealthy adoptive parent that isn't home much. Perhaps they inherited an estate when their foster parents died?

I'd say something with sting is necessary to get the minor to be able to live alone with her (in the eyes of the court) barely responsible sister who might not keep after her about schoolwork and such. Say that the state kept them together growing up by bouncing them around between foster parents every few years, but the last set they had trouble with. The foster father became a drunk after his his wife became brain damaged following a car wreck where she wasn't wearing her seatbelt. It became difficult for him to care for his wife and foster children, and while the foster children tried to help by taking care of the foster mother, the children became scared when he got verbally abusive. The older daughter became an emancipated minor at the age of 16, being given custody of her sister. She earned her GED, and began working days at Target and four nights a week at the neighborhood bar and grille. They live in an apartment complex that caters to the nearby community college, which their social worker who keeps monthly appointments with them disapproves of.
