Point being they can alter reality in ways normal people can't, similar to magic. My apologies.

And yes, Ambrose, there are about a dozen main ones, and they have a good deal of infighting (though the invasion of Evil from the north has put an end to most squabbles for the time being). I'm not even going to name all of them; that will be left up to the player, should they choose to come from that nation. I will mark who was recently at war with whom, and which nations have recently agreed to a temporary peace. Some kingdoms are allied, but there is a bit of nationalism, and yes, many have grudges against others.

The northern kingdoms, in particular, are going to be the main militant nations. They're also going to be the first line of defense against the armies of the Lord of the Dark, though the evil creatures and plagues have spread to just about everywhere.

Well, it is similar to magic, but I was just making it clear that the two are completely separate.

Alright, thanks. That's all I needed. Looks good so far.
But mostly? The assorted plans at play here would be going very, very wrong due to the actions of a no-name, no-count, utterly talentless Magus by the name of Shirou Emiya. He had no magic worth mentioning, no combat experience of note, and no plan for or knowledge of the War he was about to enter. He did, however, have one trait that had derailed a countless number of such grand, far-reaching schemes throughout history.

You see, he really, really wanted to be a hero. -(Best description of the start of a Fate novel ever.)

Okay, so time period wasn't much of a problem, everyone agrees on the setting? I guess we can move into the last of the three major world building questions and talk about overall culture of the humans. There will be some variation in different regions, of course, but things like language, religion, and some basic things like holidays and greetings.

So far I've been using Old English for place and title names, so if we want to stick to that for language it might be easiest. For place names I've been using these two pages; people names can be found here. Or, if that doesn't work for you, there's endless possibilities with google, if you want to name your home country and town.

The religion is, at the moment, pretty basic. We have the Church of the Light, which most humans follow, and worship the Creator. She is the goddess of light, birth, creation, the Sun, etc. etc. It is headed by the King of Sunrest, who acts as a kind of Pope, and has cathedrals in major towns, with smaller churches in minor ones. They use divine/meditative sorcery, and are commonly called upon as healers and rogue mage hunters (think Dragon Age, for the most part). Keep in mind though, priests are going to be weakened by the absence of their god, though they still have most of their magical powers.

The evil church is mostly followed by the orcs, vampires, werebeasts, and other sentient minions of the Lord of the Dark, though there are some human worshippers (necromancers, mostly). He is the god of death, darkness, night, the moon, destruction, and all that good stuff. He doesn't play fair. In this case, think Wheel of Time Shai'tan.

Finally, the Lost God, known only in rumors, is the Preserver. He/She has not been seen since the last time Evil swept down from the north. Historians tell of how It convinced the Lord of the Dark to call off his assault, along with coaxing the Creator to return. A trickster god, known for being wily and cunning; He/She is the god of life, cycles, rebirth, continuity, dawn and dusk, and sleep and dreams. Think Vishnu, basically.

Continuing in the Hinduism thing, they believe in reincarnation, but you can ascend to heaven, where the Goddes of Light lives, if you live an exemplary life. On the other side, if you are bad enough, you join the Dark Lord in a kind of hell. There is no caste system, but Karma does factor into what you are reincarnated as.

Everything sound good so far? I'm trying to just get the basics in. And remember, this is the general belief; your character can come from a minor sect, or your home country can follow a different religion entirely. Just know that the various gods are by and large known to exist, though the Creator hasn't manifested Herself as much as the Destroyer.

For names, I generally go with 20,000 Names. They've got a much wider variety of names to choose from.

One true goddess of the sun? You mean Princess Celestia? :P

I guess this falls under the category of All Myths Are True, eh?

I don't have any problems. It's basic enough to serve its purpose and, as my character will be a psion, anyways, I won't care about such things as gods.

Alrighty then, that should cover most of the basics of the world. Anything more detailed than what we've said is up to you guys to figure out for your characters. Make them as crazy or awesome as you'd like, just don't uber too bad. It's supposed to be a band of heroes, so they should be powerful, just not ridiculously so.

Political map going up shortly, but for the time being let's decide what exactly we want to do, story wise. We're meeting at either Sunkeep, which is a big white city full of priests and rich people, or in the castle at Wellay, which is an island to the south of Sunkeep. The former will have all the High Kings meeting in the council, along with the Lord of Sunkeep, who is the Pope guy I was talking about. The latter will pretty much be us with the King of Wellay.

My suggestion would be, since both cities are in the far south, and the only real way to get to Wellay is from Sunkeep, we assemble at the white city, then take a ship down to Wellay (or, to speed things up, we can use a teleporter of some kind, since the two cities are so steeped in magic). From there we head east by boat, either through the islands of the Sea Elves, or along the coast past the Free Cities, both of which take us to the same place. We'll be timeskipping through most of the sea travel, though we'll spend enough time together to get introductions done first. Maybe we can have a pirate attack or something, it's really up to you guys what you want to do.

The plan is to have a kind of Oddyssey type adventure, with a bunch of stops along the way where different things happen. Not so much quest tokens or side quests as they are oppurtunities for adventure. The whole plot is a mysterious expedition into the unknown, so the journey is going to be the fun part. If anyone has suggestions for side quest type things, feel free to share. Everything from fighting ninjas to slaying dragons is game, so don't hold anything back.

Thanks.

PS Quirk and Evil, haven't heard much from you two, are you still participating? Just waiting for us to figure out the details? Just wondering, thanks.

That sounds fine to me. I like the idea of a journey like that. It's different.

So, where are we going to post our character applications? Here? A new thread specifically for that?

Hold onto your characters for now. Send them to me via PM for approval first, though I don't expect there'll be any problems. After I give the all clear you can post them here, but they'll be in the official OP as well. We can keep this thread for discussion too.

Here's another link to the maps. The political one is probably worse looking than the geographical one, but again, it should serve our purposes well enough. Each "country" is a different color, with a darker border around it; borders within countries mean those provinces are governed separately, but have formed an alliance that effectively makes them one state. Think of the Holy Roman Empire, with all those German princes. The provinces with diagonal lines are vassal states, under the larger area of the same color. Some countries have island provinces, which are usually also vassals, and are again of the same color.

I've added numbers and letters to make a map key, but they're not very easy to read as it is, so if you need to download the map and zoom in you can. My apologies for my awful handwriting, but the text Gimp put in was even more troublesome. Most states won't have names, but if you want your character to come from there you can name any and everything you'd like.

Here's a list of the countries and a brief history of each. Feel free to skip to whichever you are interested in, most of this won't affect us much. Just know that 4 is Sunkeep, and 4b is Wellay.

What, no giant kraken is going to attack the ship. :P

Awesome map, incidentally. I'm terrible at drawing.

I has question:

Are there other planes or is there just the one? If there are planes, then I suggest going with the D&D method as it's pretty clear cut and simple. There are four classifications of planes: Material, Transitional, Inner, and Outer. There's only one Material Plane which is what we'd consider the normal world. The three Transitional Planes are used as means of travel. The Ethereal and Shadow Planes are for transportation within the Material Plane while the Astral Plane is a conduit to all other planes. The six Inner Planes are each manifestations of the building blocks of the universe: Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Positive Energy, and Negative Energy. Finally, the Outer Planes are a catchall for everything else, such as the planes of deities and whatnot.

That seems simple enough, though there might need be some slight adjustment with the planes of deities, considering the focus of the story and low number of deities. Not necessarily, though.

Darkom, I think I'm going to have to let this one pass... I've got a lot of stuff going on and I'm not sure I have the time to devote properly to this. Just letting you know.

Aww, 'tis a shame, Jason. I'm sorry to hear you won't be joining us. Good luck in your other endeavours though, and thanks for the help with the RP thus far. :)

This does mean, however, that we'll need a few more people. If anyone knows other RPers that may be interested, please ask them. I'll do a bit of recruiting myself, see who I can find. For now though, know that the OP will be going up early next week on here, and after that as soon as all the characters are in we can start.

And I'm not sure about that, Duke. I mean, that defeats the whole purpose of a simple, generic universe. If we end up teleporting or something else that would use that, feel free to include it yourself, but it's not going to be part of the groundwork that everyone has to follow. I personally love cool stuff like that, but as far as making it a part of the OP or something like that, I think we'll have to pass. If your Psionic character has a fascination with the planes of reality though, go right ahead and use it, because it sounds awesome. :P

Also, good to hear it, Quirk.

Thanks guys. ;)

Well, I was just stating it as potentially existing. I don't expect us to ever go to them, except maybe to the Ethereal or Shadow Planes to mix things up a bit later if things get dull. I mean, the Inner Planes are all very deadly, except for the Plane of Air (and Water if you find some way to breathe underwater).

Most excellent, I'm glad you've decided to join us. :D We'll save a spot for you. ;)

And don't worry, the pace should be fairly relaxed, as I know how busy life can get. The main thing is just that we keep things interesting and fun, perhaps with some plot progression thrown in along the way.

Speaking of, if anyone has any cool ideas for things to do along our journey, please let me know. I've got plenty of stuff to make things exciting, but I'd like for everyone to have an input. Who knows what kinds of crazy things we'll find. :P
