Alright. Well, unfortunately, I couldn't get around to posting yesterday, so now you'll have to wait until Thursday when I come back from camping. :/ |

Will try to post tonight if I find the time; just got back from a dodgeball game that I'd been planning all week, and I still have a good bit of homework. I should be able to though; wouldn't want to leave you all hanging out to dry. Thanks.

Man, it's hard for me to think of something for Victora to do. She's only got four offensive powers that will affect mindless creatures: Swarm of Crystals, Ectoplasmic Shambler, Breath of the Black Dragon, and Psionic Disintegrate. The first won't work against these shadows since they don't have physical forms. The seconds isn't a good idea because the room is too small, and it will attack absolutely everyone save Victoria. Then, the third isn't a good idea because it's a cone effect and will most certainly hit two or three other characters. So, the only attack she really has at her disposal in this situation is Psionic Disintegrate. :/ |

If you'd like, you can try just illuminating the area. If she's capable of doing that, that is. This situation is one reason I don't like listing out all my character's spells. Anyway, as I was discussing with Ambrose, the spectral creatures can really only be banished for a little while. Whenever you hit them, they'll disintegrate for a few seconds, then rematerialize in the shadows and attack again. They're meant to be an unkillable boss, basically. Our only hope lies in getting the Patriarch to finish his spell and teleport us all the heck out of there. So post any action scenes of your character if you'd like, interact with the others, or just stand and look cool; we'll eventually be fleeing the battle and heading to Wellay regardless. In the meantime, have fun showing off your characters as well as your own skill at fight scenes.

I understand what you're saying, but I prefer it this way. Otherwise, you can too easily run into the trap of having a character be a master of all trades. If you simply say that your character is a "powerful wizard," and then leave it at that, then whose to say that you can't just have him pop in with a "fix everything" spell whenever you need it? It's, like, if you find yourself in a situation where some electricity would make everything so much easier, well then, what do you know? The wizard has the perfect electrical spell all ready! You can too easily turn your character into a walking deus ex machina, and even if you don't, and just have a general idea of what your character can do, then there's still a chance that other people will accuse you of it, anyways, and start a fight. This way, if I write out specifically what my character can and cannot do, then I can't have her just spontaneously fix everyone's problems, and when she does easily solve something, no one can really complain about it. Really, the pros far outweigh the cons, especially since I've been in far, far too many situations where someone's character did just that. Luckily I've never been the one to make such a horrible character, but that's only because I do things like this specifically to avoid such a thing from happening. |

True enough, and I completely agree, I just find for my own purposes I prefer more loosely defined skill sets for my characters. I can usually trust myself enough not to uber like that. Besides, if I have control over the magic system (like in one of my own stories), I usually make it much more loose, allowing for more fluid control of spells. I'd rather have a character that can influence the perceptions of himself and those around him than one that can cast a level five invisibility spell. It could lead to abuse, true, but it also allows for more open creativity, rather than relying on premade, thought out spells. Personal preference, of course, I was just stating my opinion on the matter. Carry on then.

I disagree. Sure, you can get creative with the types of spells available, but that really just results in solving every problem the same way with different names. You're simply casting Spell B instead of Spell A. However, if you define rigid capabilities and, more importantly, lack of capabilities, you can have much more creativity with the way the problem is solved. A person using only five spells to solve everything in various different, unique ways is far more exciting and entertaining than watching a guy with 50 spells solve everything by just casting a different spell. The former adds a depth of character and a look into his/her mind, giving information about his/her thought patterns and problem solving skills. The latter is completely shallow and one-dimensional and offers nothing about who the character is. |

I've never looked at a character's personallity through the lens of how the magic in a given work functions. |

Neither have I. Not because I think it isn't a valid point, but because I've found most authors I've read tend to have all their characters use magic in roughly the same manner, even if they're using different spells. |
|
But mostly? The assorted plans at play here would be going very, very wrong due to the actions of a no-name, no-count, utterly talentless Magus by the name of Shirou Emiya. He had no magic worth mentioning, no combat experience of note, and no plan for or knowledge of the War he was about to enter. He did, however, have one trait that had derailed a countless number of such grand, far-reaching schemes throughout history. You see, he really, really wanted to be a hero. -(Best description of the start of a Fate novel ever.) | |

I'm going to have to drop out of this, mainly because I just don't particularly care anymore. The RP had its chance, but it's just been moving at a pace so slow that even a snail would laugh at it, and I've simply grown bored. |

Hello everyone. Just a quick note to say that I'll be away from Saturday through to Tuesday, so Darkom, if you need to control Duhos to get the plot going you have my position. Just don't kill him or have him piss off one of the other characters (unless it would fit with what he would do), a'ight? Because that's just annoying. |

Alright Colonel, thanks for letting me know. I'll probably be posting tomorrow. Also, unrelated note, I'll have much more time to post now, as I am officially done with XC for the season. My bum ankle dropped me out of the last two races... Edited by Darkom, Oct 21 2011, 07:14 PM.

It's a good thing I'm Buddhist then. But yeah, I'm sorry; spent four hours on a bus yesterday to go to a region meet I didn't even run at. I'll try my best tonight or tomorrow morning.
