Gyrfalcon- geddit right bud, or you is food.
OOC [Note to self: a few days after Middle Ring's]

“This is ridiculous. No matter how hard I try, I will always gather electrical charges- the harmful kind. There is nothing harmless and helpful about it.” Vlitz growled, mood fouled by these useless ‘exercises’. She’d rather spend the night sleeping, as should her rider. If Esoriel decided to return to the city and sleep in those human boxes, she wouldn’t make it easy. Lashing her tail in agitation, she twisted her neck around towards the prodding figure at her belly.

Esoriel was running her tiny hands (compared to Vlitz’s size) just below her sternum, back and forth, and applying experimental pressure. “The currents you are producing are not controlled or calm enough to be,” she said patiently. She brushed one palm hard against Vlitz’s hide, then the other in an opposite direction. Directions were not important, it was just for the ease of movement. She lifted her hands then and held them close together, only inches apart and made a spherical shape with them. “It is easy for you to hurt, rather than heal, because for you, it is your weapon. So it might be harder at first.” Walking by the length of her dragon, she stood before Vlitz and showed her hands, still shaped to form the curves of a small ball. “Will you bring your face close to me?”

Vlitz was comfortable, lying on her side, cushioned by the lush grass underneath, wings and forearms folded, back legs tucked close. She yawned, huffed through her nostrils and complied, lowering her neck to bring a large amber eye eyelevel to Esoriel. In the dark, the golden shards that rimmed her dark irises bore a dim, warm glow. Without warning, Esoriel suddenly pressed both her hands on her dragon’s lower jaw.

A startled snarl grated past her teeth. The Lightning withdrew her head in a rearing coil, faster than a snake. Something hot and numbing throbbed at her chin, spreading a strong sensation of pins and needles towards her cheeks. Hot breaths rushed through her nostrils and she shook her head in an attempt to clear the uncomfortable stinging. Stunned and feeling hurt that her rider would harm her at all, Vlits stared down in bewilderment.

“You wanted to learn something ‘useful’, didn’t you?” There was a faint smile on Esoriel’s lips that held the chill of steel. “I am only human. Think of what you can do, Vlitz.” She dropped her hands to her sides and looked up beseechingly.

Coiling her head close, Vlitz narrowed her eyes in defiance. “I could very well cook you without whatever it is you did.”

Esoriel brought her hands up again and rubbed the offended area at her dragon’s chin. In virtual seconds, the numbness faded. Pricks of pain seemed to be absorbed by Esoriel’s touch alone. “Mmm, I do not doubt that.” She chuckled softly, amused. “It is working, Vlitz, even if you can’t see it. I used your own gathered energy against you.” She sighed and took in a deep breath of night air, shutting her eyes briefly to savour the cool rush in her lungs. There was nothing more she would ever find in Lihn. It was time to prepare for their journey. She only hoped Vlitz wouldn’t throw a fit. “I want to leave the Academy. To search else where.”

Before Vlitz could get a word in, however, Esoriel went to her shoulders, where a black metallic case was strapped securely to the saddle. She mounted and urged her dragon to rise. “I’d like to test something. Take me to the air?”

“It is dangerous to travel with just the pair of us,” Vlitz muttered, reluctance clear. She picked herself lazily up and flared her wings, threading them gently over the air a few beats to test the wind. Gathering the muscles on her haunches, she crouched, catapulting them into the air soon after. Her thicker, more developed shoulders provided her more strength. It took no more than two wing beats to take them high into the sky.

“I know. If this is successful, I think we should be able to manage just fine.” Pulling out her bow and retrieving something from the black box, Esoriel impaled the red tube-like item with an arrow. She strung it, carefully against her bow, aimed high and released it. “Shoot it!”

Vlitz responded the moment the order was issued. A fine thread of gold crackled from her open jaws and struck the missile at the peak of its arcing course. An explosive sound followed a brilliant shower of colourful jewel dusts in the dark sky. The luminous dusts glittered before fading into nothingness. Vlitz swung her head around and peered at her rider questioningly. “Human-made fire flowers?”

Shaking her head, Esoriel smiled bemusedly. “That was just a small one. I am going to shoot another. Be careful with this one. It can’t explode too close to us.” She had bought them from an eccentric chemist at Lihn. He had provided her with a few harmless firecrackers to test with and one true explosive. The tube she pulled out now was black. She asked for the strongest he ever made and this was it. Only, the chemist couldn’t provide her with the exact radius of its explosion. He didn’t dare to try. If this works, it would be a valuable addition to their arsenal.

Drawing hard on her bow string till her arm quivered with the exertion, she released it. The missile whipped through the air, a resounding whistle followed in its wake. It sailed approximately six hundred metres away before dipping downwards. Vlitz struck in a flash of lightning from her maws.

The force and the heat that buffeted them flinging them away, spinning them like a wind torn kite. The blast sounded oddly distant in Vlitz’s ears, but she could hear its echoes. Her one wing was slapped sore by the sheer force. Desperately, she clawed at the air, searching for a steady current to regain balance. Nostrils flared and breaths coming in great heaves of her chest, her fury didn’t arrive till her shock faded. Oh she would skin Esoriel for this! When she whipped her head back, livid snarl on her face froze at the lifeless sight of her rider. Esoriel sat slumped forward, unconscious. Vlitz could pick up traces of blood’s sharp scent. A panicked guttural rasped through her throat. No... no, no, no! Not like this!

Her long narrow wings beat wildly in the air as she spun, eyes wide and searching. Part of her, washed over by her fear and anxiety was screaming to find the direction home. Rosemarys- they were all in the Academy. But flying in the night all the way across would be disastrous. Roaring her frustration and defiance, she surged eastward. She feared nothing! Nothing but the loss of her rider.

OOC [because I needed something to thrash aside from my blasted laptop =_=]

The sound was unlike any Ceallach had heard in his life. It was like a dragon's roar, but sharper; like thunder, but condensed and crystallized into one massive, concussive BANG that had him rolling out of bed and scrambling for his boots before the light had completely faded and long before the rolling echo had died to a rumbling reverberation through the ancient stone corridors. His feet were carrying him to the nearest alarm post before his brain had completely cleared sleep from his eyes; body running on the automatic memory pressed into his muscles by endless drills and fuled by pure adrenaline.

"TAINT!" He shouted at the runner manning the post. "Scramble the riders; they are coming!" The boy took one look at Ceallach's alarming visage; sharp eyes framed by wild beard, and ran.

As Ceallach sprinted back to his wing to don his armor, he could hear his wing's alarm bell begin to ring. It was soon joined by the others; a chorus of bells shouting battle from the ramparts, rousing a sleeping fortress to fight.

"Damon, what is it?" Lucarou cried as his rider dashed into the dragon's massive sleep-chamber.

"Taint, my friend!" the man replied, climbing nimbly up the Earth's outstretched forearm despite the weight and encumbrance of his armor. "To the Parade Grounds, just like we drilled. We'll organize the defense there." Mastering his own terror with the desire to protect his home, the dragon went.

[[OOC: This thread is open; a party will be organized to go investigate the explosion under the assumption that it is a Tainted attack. Feel free to scramble your dragon/rider pair and join us, if you'd like! :D Otherwise we will NPC dragon/rider pairs. There is no actual Taint; we are rescuing Vlitz and Esoriel from their experiment with explosives]]

Kialish had been sleeping soundly before she heard the alarm being raised, but no longer. Tempyst was up even quicker than her rider, shaking sleep from her mind as soon as she heard that a Tainted was on the loose. Kialish yawned deeply, grabbing her special designed Arming Sword from beside her bed and tying it onto her waist, still not quite awake. She quickly tousled her hair with one hand as she climbed onto Tempysts' saddle. The water dragon huffed, stretching her wings and walking toward the opening in the room to fly out. Kialish yawned and rubbed her eyes again.

"Oh wake up, sleeping bones." Tempyst said, snaking her head around and puffing cold mist in her riders face. With a sharp gasp, Kialish stiffened her back and was about to offer a snappy retort when Tempyst dove out the entry way. Wind whipped by them at blinding speed, the cold air assisting Kialishs' waking up as they headed for the Parade grounds. Tempysts wings snapped open and she pulled up from the dive and began heading toward the grounds to mobilize.

After a quick minute, they landed on the grounds, seeing Caellach and Lucarou already there. They assumed he had risen the alarm.

"What is it, Caellach?" Kialish asked as Tempyst landed gracefully.
