{{This takes place by the river a little north of Lihn http://z7.invisionfree.com/Sekkai_Fracture...p?showtopic=159 }} Aden walked along the river banks, just outside of Lihn. He'd come mostly to get away from the Academy a little bit as well as explore, and he had been lucky to catch a Rider who had been heading to Lihn for a day trip. After walking around the city for a while, he decided he really didn't want to be in a city crowded with people. So, he left the city and headed towards the river instead. He hoped to see some wildlife around, maybe see a wild phoenix or something. He looked down at the stones, smoothed by the waters of the river. Some even glowed like gems. The few sparkling ones he found he put in his pocket, just because they were pretty. After a while of fruitless attempts of finding fauna besides birds and insects, Aden heard mewling. Looking around, he saw no animals right off, until he noticed movement closer to the water. The animal was colored the same as the surrounding river stones. Aden picked up his pace to see a struggling kitten, soaked and most likely been tossed in the river. The grey, black and white kitten mewled weakly, crawling away from the water, making Aden terribly sad. "Awe, you little cute thing!" He said, crouching down. He scooped up the wet feline and examined it. Besides being soaked to its tiny bones, the kitten seemed fine, but he wondered how come such an adorable animal had been in the river to begin with. Maybe someone in Lihn had lost it? Or had someone purposely thrown the little thing away? |

Cendre's wings fanned out as far as they could, catching the wind in their brightly colored sails. It had been a long time since Halar had stopped to consider the sheer size of his partner, and he was enjoying the chance to see her in all her glory. They so rarely got the chance to go flying these days; guardians rarely had any time to themselves these days, what with the threat of a taint attack looming closer than ever. He was a guardian of the Academy at that, meaning he'd yet to have a day off. After all, if there was anything that needed protecting, it was the hallowed institution that brought fortth Sekkai's defenders. Having come out of the Academy himself, he understood how important his job was. Even so, he sometimes longed for a little time to simply relax. Finally, after all this time, they'd been given a brief reprieve. Technically, he'd meant to come into Lihn and purchase some new boots. One of the other guardians had suggested he do so, and while he didn't like to spend money on things he found superfluous, he had to admit his current pair was in a bizarre state of disrepair. There was a large crack on the left shoe, and the right one looked a bit like dried-up terrain in the desert. A few more weeks and they'd be falling off of his feet. So he'd set out for Lihn, only to catch a glimpse of the small river running just north of it. He used to see beautiful rivers all the time...back when he was an outrider. Those days might be over, but this was their time, and that river looked very inviting... As Cendre descended towards the water, Halar caught a glimpse of a young man crouching down on the ground. Was the boy hurt, or was he looking at something? Sensing Halar's curiosity, Cendre banked to the right and began to land...a few feet away from the boy. Hopefully it wouldn't frighten him too badly... The fire-dragon landed with what had to have been an intentional thud. Halar dismounted quickly, hoping that the boy wasn't injured, and also hoping that his dragon hadn't just given him a heart attack. "Excuse me! Boy! You alright there? Why are yo-" He finally saw what the boy was looking at. A kitten. He'd got all concerned over nothing after all. "Er, sorry. Thought you might be hurt." From a few feet away, Cendre snorted. |

"Excuse me! Boy! You alright there? Why are yo- Er, sorry. Thought you might be hurt." Came a voice from behind Aden. He looked up to see a rather disspointed rider and a fire dragon a few feet away. The dragon snorted when her rider noticed it was nothing big. "Oh, I'm sorry ,sir, " Aden said, with a smile. He stood up, coddling the kitten. "I was just exploring the river and I happened to see this little kitten, all alone. I didn't mean to concern you any." He looked at the dragon behind him. She was a very beautiful fire dragon, although she had an amused expression, as though her riders mistake was funny. It wasn't really, sometimes it was good to over react. He could have been hurt for real, it jsut happened that right now, he was fine. |

A kitten? He'd got himself all worked up over a kitten? Maybe life as a guardian was making him paranoid. The boy was clearly not in any danger, unless the kitten decided to attack with its tiny teeth and claws. Even then the most dangerous thing the lad faced was an infection of some sort, which wouldn't be pleasant by any means, but would never be as severe as something like the taint. "Might be diseased, that thing. Better be careful that it doesn't bite you." Halar commented, eyeing the infant cat carefully. Cendre scoffed. "Oh, Halar, you're being ridiculous. I could eat that little creature and not even realize. It's not a tainted kitten, you silly man." The way she was looking at the tiny thing, Cendre might have actually been considering eating it. A kitten of that size wouldn't even amount to a snack for a dragon of her age...not that the size of her meals had even mattered before. So long as the meals came, Cendre was happy for the most part. "Dre's right, I suppose. I'm Halar, a guardian at the Academy. You a candidate there? You look familiar. I've seen a lot of folks there on my rounds, though." He stopped to consider the situation. The boy was out alone, and outside the safety of the city walls. Even though no tainted creatures had been in this area recently, the risk that something could happen to an unsuspecting person was very real. Besides, a young fellow like him shouldn't have beeen out alone anyway. He could have been injured or worse. Worse yet, people would have had a hard time finding him. "You ought not to be out on your own like this. I know it seems safe, but you never know what's out here these days." |

"Might be diseased, that thing. Better be careful that it doesn't bite you."[/b[ The rider cautioned. Aden chuckled slightly, scratching the kittens tiny head with his finger. "Oh, Halar, you're being ridiculous. I could eat that little creature and not even realize. It's not a tainted kitten, you silly man." The dragon replied to his statement. Aden looked, concerned, at the kittenh than to the fire, who really did look like she would take a bit out of the little thing. "Dre's right, I suppose. I'm Halar, a guardian at the Academy. You a candidate there? You look familiar. I've seen a lot of folks there on my rounds, though." "I'm a dire candidate," Aden explained with a smile. "You ought not to be out on your own like this. I know it seems safe, but you never know what's out here these days." Halar warned. "Yes, I probably shouldn't be out here alone," Aden said a little embarrassed. "When curiosity gets me, I can't help but look around. I mean, If I hadn't this little kitten may have died." The kitten mewled meekly in response. "Could you possibly give me a rider back to the Academy? Or Lihn, if you don't want to go far?" |

Ah, the lad was a dire candidate. So he was around the Academy at times. Halar couldn't remember seeing him, but then again, he saw nearly everyone at the Academy every single day; this was a lot of faces to recall. Cendre might claim to have seen the boy, but knowing her, she might just be lying to make herself seem important. She did have quite the over-inflated ego. "Well," Halar admitted, "it'd be alright if you weren't alone. Maybe when you bond to a dire you'll be better off in places like this." Cendre cocked her head to the side, examining the kitten in the boy's hands. "It is good you found the kitten, even if Halar says you shouldn't be out alone. He thinks that everything is dangerous since he lost his ear and my crystal was almost cracked. But why try and bond to a silly old dire? Why not bond with a dragon like myself? We're much better." Her rider shook his head. "Not everyone's suited for dragons, Dre. Some people like the wolves. Besides, we need them. Without our ground forces, Sekkai'd fall for certain. We need all the help we can get in times like this" He didn't want to frighten the boy with such talk, but it was the honest truth. Everyone was needed to defend their homeland these days. "As for the ride, I'd be happy to do so. It's my duty, after all, to see to the well being of all the Academy's residents. I'd be remiss if I didn't help you out." |

"Well, Dragons are magnificent, but I am fond of the dires," He replied. "I do enjoy the majesty dragons like you portray, but with dires, its a wild energy rather than a majestic one. I guess I just lean more toward the wild. And yes, they are vital for the ground forces. I mean, one pack can't take down an earth, but they can get forests and rosemaries, which would kill off not only the fast and poisonous tainted, but also their healing force." "As for the ride, I'd be happy to do so. It's my duty, after all, to see to the well being of all the Academy's residents. I'd be remiss if I didn't help you out." "Thank you, very much." Aden said. "I doubt that anyone owns this little thing, so I think I'll keep him. Give him a name when he gets older." |

Suriprisingly, the lad had a fairly good argument for why he wanted to become a dire-handler; he was obviously more mature than his few years indicated. He fancied the feral, wild nature of the wolves, and Halar couldn't blame him for that. They were majestic in their own way, certainly. This boy clearly understood their function in Sekkai's defensive forces; Halar found that admirable, having seen a good deal of combat himself. Not only were the boy's ideas intelligent, they were also absolutely correct. "I've seen a tainted rosemary take down several riders at once with its abilities. Not a pretty site." Halar mused. Cendre cringed a little at the memory, but otherwise seemed indignant at the idea that tiny rosemaries could assault larger dragons like herself. "They would never be able to harm me, of course." She snorted. "I could swallow them whole if I wanted to." Indeed, most people had a hard time imagining anything the size of a rosemary taking out anything the size of a fire. Halar knew better, though. He'd seen it happen. The tain empowered its victims in unusual, macabre ways. "Obviously, we still need young fellows like yourself to keep the ground forces from getting clobbered. That said, have you ever ridden a dragon before?" The guardian asked. "Er, I forgot to ask your name." |

"I've seen a tainted rosemary take down several riders at once with its abilities. Not a pretty site." Halar said in regard to what Aden said. The teen only nodded, not having seen the damages, but rather hearing about it. It didn't sound good either. "They would never be able to harm me, of course. I could swallow them whole if I wanted to." The fire dragon snorted. Aden smiled at her courage, although it sounded a bit more like an inflated ego. "Yes, but if you've seen what they did outside you, imagine what the residue of one would do inside you?" Aden combated with a sly smile. Sometimes digestive juices didn't kill all the bacteria. "Obviously, we still need young fellows like yourself to keep the ground forces from getting clobbered. That said, have you ever ridden a dragon before?" Halar asked. "Er, I forgot to ask your name." "Oh, a few times... just today I rode a pretty nice water who gave me a lift to Lihn. But, I ended up walking here to the river." Aden said with a laugh. "And my name is Aden." |

Aden. The name didn't ring any bells, but then again, Halar wasn't the sort of person who went around asking the names of people he saw on patrol. Sure, he did so if they were violating a rule, or if they had something to report, but that was different. As Halar mused on this, Cendre thought carefully about how a tainted rosemary-dragon might feel inside of her stomach. "Well," she said, "dragons don't generally eat each other anyhow. Taints might, but they're not right in the head." Halar nodded, then returned his attention to the boy. Aden said he'd ridden dragons before; a comforting thought, since some people tended to be frightened by the sensation of flying for the first time. A panicked person was the last thing any rider wanted aboard their dragon, since the panicked person could alarm the dragon and cause an accident. It'd never happened to him, or anyone he knew, but he'd heard stories. "Well, I'm guessing you and your new pet will want to head back to the Academy. Cendre and I would be happy to take you. Simply say the word and we can get going." The guardian smiled a little. "I'm in no real hurry." |

"Well, I'm all done here," Aden said with a smile. "I'll keep this little guy as a pet. He can stay with me in my room." the cat mewled happily. "So, shall we go than?" |

It had been a long while since Cendre had been asked to serve as transportation for anyone other than Halar. Generally, she didn't much approve of others using her like some beast of burden, but, she supposed that one boy and his pet wouldn't look too undignified. At any rate, Halar wouldn't allow the lad to be left outside of the city alone. She had half a mind to tell him that if the boy was foolish enough to venture out alone, he ought to be swallowed by an abyssal or some other foul tainted beast. He'd no doubt find that remark inappropriate, though, and scold her for it, so she'd have to agree with Halar for the time being. "I am ready to go," she announced, "shall I lift you, Aden, or would you prefer to climb aboard like Halar does?" Halar shook his head. Cendre hadn't protested carrying Aden before, but, knowing her and her volatile moods, she might have only just altered her opinion on the matter. "I am also ready to move on." He said. "You'll have to keep a tight grip on your pet. Wouldn't want it to fall out of the sky. I don't suppose you've got a satchel to place it in?" Cendre eyed the kitten doubtfully. "I don't think I will like it if that thing scratches me. Not that such a tiny animal could hurt me, but I don't like the idea of being scratched by it at all." |
