((This takes place somewhere in all that lush green stuff to the West of Lihn, on the mainland, somewhere just below the second 'i' in Niyushi on the map XD.)) There were some things about life that were impossible to miss: torrential downpours that you had to travel through, the stars shining far overhead on otherwise pitch-black nights, and one's direwolf going into heat. It was the last that was currently concerning Myrad, who was currently watching the Moonrunner in question pacing backwards and forwards on the edge of their little camp, dark coat glimmering with hints of hidden fire in the dawn light, the sun slowly peering over the tops of the trees, stroking the world with warmth and light. He had no idea how other female dires showed that they were approaching their time to run, to lead the males on a merry chase through woods and fields, but Estesia was alternately incredibly restless, and almost smotheringly affectionate, switching from one to the other in moments. The first signs had come a few days previously, when Estesia had begun to shadow his every move as he set up camp, ending with her twining herself around him to the extent that he toppled to the ground. Since then, she'd either been attempting to spend as much time glued to his side as possible, initiating contact at every possible opportunity, or had been doing exactly what she was doing now - pacing restlessly, almost frenetically, unable to remain stationary for a second. Myrad poked their small fire carefully, the wood stacked so as to not produce any smoke, the blaze small enough that dirt could easily be kicked over it. Perhaps it wasn't the way to make their camp the least noticeable, but given how deep they were into Niyushi's heartland he'd decided to take the risk - besides, there was nothing like tea to get one up in the morning. Balancing his small, rather battered kettle over the flames, having filled it with water from the nearest clear stream the night before, he sprinkled in a few tealeaves, inhaling their scent as they hit the water even as he kept an eye on Estesia. The change, when it came, was both instant and noticeable: the Moonrunner suddenly halted her pacing, standing perfectly square, every muscle tense as she raised her head, nose pointing to the clouds above, tinted orange with the rising sun. She remained in that position, tail curling up behind her, for a long moment, Myrad barely daring to breath, then broke the atmosphere by howling, the clear, low note spiraling up into the air, carrying further than should probably be possible as she announced her intent to any males who were in range. Estesia took a breath as her call came to an end, slim chest expanding as she breathed deeply and let out another cry, this one pitched higher, piercing in its intensity as she flung out her challenge. And then, in a sudden burst of movement, she was off, muscles bunching as she flung herself away from Myrad and their tiny, neat camp into the surrounding woods, howling again as she did so, long legs reaching out to pull the ground away beneath her. Her course a twisting dance through the trees, Estesia's auburn mane and tail tip shone out against the darker mahogany of the rest of her coat, her rich colours seemingly intensified by the hormones flooding through her body, driving her on to find a male - to find the most worthy male, the strongest, the one who would produce the fittest, best pups who would go far in the world - to run until that male had proven himself. Raising her head to let out another - and probably final - clarion call of challenge and desire, she settled in to her stride, waiting to see what males would attempt to catch her as she agilely spun around trees and lightly leapt fallen logs. Myrad, meanwhile, abandoned by his fire, shrugged and settled back to enjoy his tea. It was a good thing their current scouting trip was a) a fairly short one, and b) one without a timetable attached. |

The Goddess of Lurking

Shad continued his grumbling, despite the cold shoulder he was getting from his dire. Grimm had made his intentions to do a bit of traveling quite clear the day before. Not that Shad had complained then. They'd been going mainly between the Academy and Lihn now that he was assigned to the Northernway pack. Shad had to smile happily at that. It was good to finally be back with Lex. When Grimm had first dragged out his packs and harnesses and made clear to his rider that he wanted to go for a bit of travel, he had thought that it'd be a short trip, just going out running for the day. Not running through the day, and through the night. Didn't even let Shad set up camp so that he could get some proper sleep. So now that sun was rising, and the direrider was tired, grumpy, and stuck on top of his dire that seemed quite insistent to keep on going. Wasn't the nice little vacation he had thought his dire had been wanting. His head came up as he noticed his dire's ears perk up, the sound of a dire's howl ahead ringing across the forest. Shad wondered for a second why Grimm would come out so far just to meet another dire, though he didn't have much more than a second before he had to get off, or risk being dumped by his ride. Turning around and gaping at his dire's swift change in behavior, Grimm pointed his nose at the straps, a signal often used when he wanted them off. Sighing and obliging, Shad quickly removed his dire's gear, only to watch as Grimm darted off into the forest, leaving his rider alone with the packs. Cursing quietly, Shad realized that given the circumstances, the dire who howled was probably female. Which meant he wouldn't be seeing his dire for quite a while. He sat down next to the packs, contemplating whether he should try and find the female dire's rider, or just wait here. Sitting in silence listening to howls in the distance became boring very quickly, however, so he pulled himself up, hefting the packs over his shoulder, and set off to somewhere around where he thought the howls came from, hoping he didn't get himself lost. Which wouldn't be surprising..... he has a terrible sense of direction..... So he trudged through the forest, grumbling about his dire and his dire's idea of a nice vacation. Grimm, on the other hand, had little thought left for his rider. The white dire streaked through the forest, his mind set on the female. His feet thundered on the ground, feeling significantly lighter without all of his usual battle gear, his white form moving fluidly, his silvery-teal mane looking like a raging river along his back, from the wind's movement through the hairs. His head raised up more as he caught sight of the female, her mahogany form sliding through the forest like a shadow. A moonrunner like himself, light and fast. Announcing his presence, he howled out, a feline-like tone to it making it clear that he was of the same breed. He fell in behind the female, matching her speed, holding behind her like an escort, not threatening and holding off from any displays until competition should arrive, or if it should not, then he would display himself to the female alone, and let her judge his power against her own desires. |

Smirij and Bloodbite had been out in the woods for quite some time when they heard the first call from quite a distance. It wasn't unusual for the pair to be out in the woods, neither was it the fact that they were alone, wind and weather deciding their path. Blood pricked up his ears and sniffled, the fur on his back raised like a huge, red mane as he stood still to listen and to smell. It had been a long, long time since Firesong. A decade. And war had seperated them. Forever. Bloodbite didn't even know whether she was dead or not. Maybe he didn't even really care. This call... sounded not so different from hers. Feminine. Light. Smirij had never quite understood what drove his dire to fall for a Moonrunner. So much smaller, they looked awkwardly fragile next to his bruteish shape. He had never bothered to ask whether breeding between the different breeds was frowned upon or even forbidden. Somehow it had never quite troubled him. His dire did what he damn well pleased to do and Smirij was in no position to tell him to back off a female he desired. It wasn't like their travels had given them many chances such as this one... With a sigh and then a grunt, Smirij dismounted and begun to remove the armor of his dire along with the saddle. The main part came off with a loud clatter, landing in a tangled pile on the ground when the restless Dire shrugged it off. Another sigh came and went before even the heavy iron helmet was removed from Bloodbites head, landing atop the rest of his iron plating. A Moonrunner. "You will loose, old friend...", Smirij muttered as he sat down and begun to untangle the pieces of armor he had taken off his mount. Bloodbite paid him no mind, he shook his heavy, red fur, stretched his legs and trotted off, leaving his rider behind. He could smell campfire nearby. Tracks of other animals. But they mattered not. His mind and soul was set on one scent alone as he shouldered his way through the undergrowth, head low, sniffing. There. The dire paused for a moment when the second call rang, soon answered by a male that sounded quite similar to the female. A rival. Another Moonrunner. Silent as a shadow now, he made his way more swiftly through the trees, his dark fur hiding him from sight as he slid closer and closer to the two Moonrunners. When he emerged from the undergrowth, he did so with a spurt, eyes set not on the female but the male that was trotting behind her. His teeth were bared, a loud snarl raising from his thick throat, muscles tensed under his heavy coat. Bloodbite could not outrun either of these two. But he knew very well that he could most likely bully any dire into submission if he managed to catch any piece of flesh between his teeth. He was a brute at best and there was no way of denying it. If he could win this female, he would so by strength. Maybe she'd be mad at him for ruffling up the fur of her other chasers but then again she shouldn't bother to accept a father who went running at the slightest sign of agression either. And agressive Bloodbite surely was. His intention was quite clear - he'd knock Grimm over and out of the way if he caught him, altough he would probably not try to wound him just yet. Unless of course, the fragile Moonrunner was stupid enough to stand his ground. Bloodbite somehow expected the other male to know his own strength and that was not to fight another dire of twice his own weight head to head. He'd probably stick around to annoy him either way but no battle was won easy and if it was it hadn't been worth fighting. And he did expect this female to be worth fighting over.... And thus, his entry to this run begun with a snarl and a charge for his rivals neck... |
