It was a clear night, a warm night. Tess still hadn't quite gotten used to the lack of cold in Niyushi. It was odd not having snow, but at the same time, there seemed to be plenty of rain. Spring was coming now, and the fields were blooming with flowers. The stars were brilliant against the sky. Though tropical forest covered the environment, this area around Lihn was cleared of the monstrous jungle, leaving fields. Replacing the forest of trees, was a forest of tents. From the sky, one could see a sort of organization of the tents. There were distinct boundaries between grouping of tents that had formed over the years. They were almost like towns now, a good number of the tents being converted into much more steady and permanent settlement. It was a sign a hope perhaps, but at the same time, a sign of what destruction had occured for so many people to be packed here. One of the farther outlying groupings of tents, an effegy was being held. The so called head of the tent town had informed the higher ups of the event, and a rider had been assigned. It was good to see a fighting spirit still among the people, but it was also good to have a rider there to keep it from getting out of hand. Tess was that rider. Since Midori was somewhat sensitive to too much sun in the middle of the day, being assigned to night duty wasn't too bad. Also, seeing as Midori was very white, no one would miss his presence with a source of light from a bonfire. Though he was white, Midori looked black when he flew high in the night sky. He didn't reflect much light unless lit up by a large lightsource, like a full moon. But stars and anything less than a half moon in the sky would allow Midori to stay hidden in the dark much like any other dragon. Tess stood there in a small clearing between two tent towns, where the burning was to take place. The people had really gone all out. There was food and drink, along with a very large piling of wood that was to make one heck of a bonfire. "So, they burn a representation of an enemy to bring a sense of comrardery," Midori stated, more than asked. He had been curious over such an event, and had very much been quick to understand the meaning. "It seems to be a constructive way to focus destructive thoughts." Tess smiled to herself and glanced back at the white dragon, sitting almost like a dog on his arse, watching the assembly. She stood just a few feet in front of the smallish forest. A yell made her turn to look at a small line of people parading a rather detailed straw sculpture of what looked to be a certain tainted Karma dragon. Quickly it was placed at the top of the tall stack of firewood for all to see. Tess stepped back so she was closer to Midori. She reached up and touched the tail she had tied her hair back into. Sometimes she wondered if she should just cut it shoulder length. It would be much easier to deal with. But that wasn't on her mind now. She was concentrating at the event at hand. So far so good. One of the people began lighting the members' torches and as one, those given the privelege, lit the fire. A roar came over the crowd, of approval of the fire and the anger toward the one that the effegy represented. As the flames reached higher and higher, people threw old fruit at the effegy to show their own displeasure. Finally, when the flames reached the straw figure, people began clapping and celebrating. Tess held her breath for a moment, waiting. But it seemed joyful enough, and when no fights broke out, she relaxed minutely. The food and drink were brought out and a small band began playing some music. "Ah, a celebration. Is such a thing common after these events?" Midori asked. "I think it just depends," Tess answered. Generally the two would be assigned to more scouting missions... well at least when the moon was smaller than a half moon, or when there were clouds out. Midori was both a quick and endurance flier due to his large wings and light body. As the music began, Tess noticed Midori's head bobbing ever so slightly. "Do you like the music dearest?" She asked him. Midori looked down at her. "Yes," he said. "Music among the tents has a much different quality than in the city, and there are differences between the different groupings. It is all very unique, and I enjoy the string instrument. It is being played very quickly and much more harshly than in the city, but it is a good sound." Tess nodded as her gaze returned to the party at hand. Eyeing the amount of food and drink there was, along with the energy of those around, this would be a long night. |
