Tess had woken once again from the nightmare. The same nightmare that seemed to visit her more nigths than a nightmare should. She had been in a tangle of sheets, and sweating from the fear. Midori had woken with her, feeling his rider's distress. With her adrenaline going as it was, Tess knew she wouldn't be able to go back to sleep... at least not here in her quarters. And the hour was so late as to be early, though far far too early to be up and about. Midori had suggested that some fresh air would do them good. Tess had agreed. Dizzy somehow hadn't woken, so they had left him there to sleep the night away. That was how the girl and her dragon found themselves on the outskirts of tent city, at the edges of the lowlands, perched on a formation of rocks. The night air was cool, though not overly so. These were tropical lands, so true cold winters were nonexistent. Despite the early hour, there were still fires burning in the huge stretch of tent city. A good number of them were kept burning to light the way for those walking in the dark. But Midori and Tess were far enough away and a little bit higher to be able to see the full beauty of the stars above them. Their vision was unmarred by the lights of the fires, and the pinpoints of light scattered through the tents were a pathetic echo of the millions of pinpoints above. Midori had curled up just below the rock that Tess was perched on, the two of them sharing the silence. The adrenaline had left Tess's body by this point, yet a faint echo of dread and a feeling of anxiousness remained. Tess pulled a knee close to her, letting her other leg just hang off the rock as she gazed up at the stars. She knew Midori was keeping guard of them both despite looking like he was resting. His senses were sharp, sharper than her own. No one would surprise the two tonight with the sky so clear and the air so quiet. |

In perfect serenity the dragon gazed out his window, soaked in silvery starlight, blue eyes ambling across the horizon. There were so many colors that filled the bright darkness, from a spilled glass of beaten blue, to a pulse of royal purple, and the faint halo of burgundy about each washed out star. Yet it was all one color, sky color. A soft, thoughtful sigh whispered past the dragon's lips as he drew his head indoors, the clatter of footsteps drawing his attention. Those heavy feet could belong to none other than his rider, and surely enou- "Attie, lookit what I nabbed from the kitchen! Muffins! Nearly lost the skin a my fingers when the chef caught me, but here they are! Smells good, eh?" Apparently one of the prized muffins had already been throughtly enjoyed, thick berry smudges brushed along the corner of the man's smile. He waved the basket temptingly before the sharp hook of the dragon's beak, wiggling his brow suggestively. Atlas looked less than enthusiastic. Silently the dragon put his head back out the window, ignoring his riders loud munching. "'Ah 'sweer dere deleeshush! Come awn yeh gotter trah leest wan. Hmph. Wassout there anyway, that's got ya so intrested?" The rider poked his head out the window, cheek to to cheek with the dragon. "Hm, been a long time since I saw such a peaceful night. Such a long time. Man were old Atlas." A tired look fell across his features, and for once Atlas noticed how time had touched his rider, every scar, dark wrinkle, beaten skin. Of course there were also muffin crumbs and berry juice, but that was besid the point. "Leo, may we go out tonight? I would like to watch the stars, it's such a perfect night." Effective immediantly the saddle was slapped gently across his shoulders and the spare muffins tucked into the leather pouch for safe keeping. "No sense in wastin' such a perfect night! Let's ride!" Slipping out the shadowed door the dragon creapt across the silvery grass, the wind tickling his feathered sides. The night was a benevolent mistress tonight, the breeze was gentle and kindly. Of course it helped to be a master of such elements as well. The air suddenly rushed to fill his parted wings the way an ocean tide chases the shore, and the dragon cut into the sky with hardly a stroke of his own doing. Clean air filled his lungs, the beautiful colors of night spilled across the empty color of his fur and feathers. Oh, he was sorely tempted to test the winds congenality, his wings pulling in for a spiral into the darkness. "Oi At-..lass! Mind mh muffins!" The man howled scrambling to slap the lid on the saddle bag as a muffin fell free and plummeted towards the ground. "Darn." Shaking his head the dragon closed his wings evenly and dropped gracefully to the ground, though his eyes were greeted with the sight of another dragon. Atlas whistled a melodic greeting, while Leonik waved cheerfully from behind the dragon's thick mane. "Why what's this, another couple a' nightowls?" Leonik summized aloud while his dragon rolled blue eyes at this most obvious statement. "Mind if we join ya, I have muffins if ya'd care for one!" Leonik rummaged around in the saddle pack and drew out the carefully wrapped basket of pastries, swinging them about in his hand. "Fresh from the oven! Chef nearly got me, she did! But I don't think she'll mind us enjoyin' a few, eh?" He tempted with a conspiratorial wink. |

A wind rustled through the grass as Tess gazed across the lowlands. Everything seemed so quiet... well not quite quiet, more like she felt so very seperated from everything. Everything save her mind. In her mind's eye she saw her brother. It was so real, almost as if he was sitting there next to her. Closing her eyes, she pretended to feel the warmth of a body sitting next to her, pretended that the soft rustle was a breath. As soon as Tess had been brought the rest of the way to the Academy, she had sent a message to her parents about the loss of her brother. It had seemed the prudent thing to do. Even as she wrote the letter, Tess had felt detached, as if the entire world was a dream. It hadn't seemed real. And after bonding with Midori, she had been so busy raising him and feeling his bond with her soul that she didn't have time to address that her brother was missing. Tess remembered the exact moment that she had been hit with the grief. It was soon after the Academy had fallen, after escaping and helping those to a safe place, she finally admitted to herself the truth. It had been night and she had just been relieved from watch late in the night, alone with her thoughts. She had found privacy a little ways away where she had wept with only Midori to witness. The pain had finally caught her, the emptiness in her heart and soul that could never be filled. Not even by Midori, though the dear had tried. People always said that twins shared something no one but they could understand. Tess didn't know if this was true because until that moment she had never been without her twin. Why had that memory come to her now? Tess wondered. Yes, she had given herself some time to grieve though there really hadn't been much over the past ten years. She had thought herself healed and moved on... but really she wasn't healed. The wound would forever be there, and for the moment, Tess felt like she was bleeding. Tess felt a warmth, a breath against her arm. It seemed so real... her brother... She opened her eyes, and came back to the present. Midori's snout against her, his body coiled loosely around her form, closed into a circle by his tail. Tess put a hand to her cheek, realizing that she was crying. At least there was no one around to see her... Midori suddenly moved his head, looking up into the sky. Tess looked up too, seeing a form in the darkness. It was hard to pick out, but after the amount of on the job training she had had at being watch. Midori's nostrils flared for a moment as he picked up the scent in the wind. "It's an air dragon," Midori murmured to her. "I think his name is Atlas..." They both heard the dragon's rider shouting but the words were taken by the wind from the dive. Tess quickly began wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand, not wanting the newcomers to see that she had been crying, thanking the spirits that it was night. The air dragon, for that was clearly what the dragon was now that the sinuous body and the mane were clearer once the dragon was on the ground, whistled a greeting. Midori made a chirp back, the sort that was characteristic of the forest kind. Tess took a few deep breaths to calm herself. She blinked rapidly trying to push away her memories and heartache. For a moment Tess wanted to say no to the idea of company. The man whose name escaped her for the moment was far too cheery. But such a thing would be very rude when clearly he was reaching out with kindness. Tess never was one who was comfortable in large social settings, and generally she felt a little shy around others. "We don't mind at all," Tess raised her voice just loud enough for Leonik to hear. She absentmindedly rubbed her arm with her other hand as she stood. Midori gave her a very soft rumble of approval and support. His rider really hadn't made many very close friends and he had been troubled by this. He understood grief, and felt an echo of the grief from her. He did not want her to be alone forever though, and now that things had been somewhat stable for a while it was time for her to make closer friendships. She did spend time with other riders, but generally when they pushed her to come spend time with them. And she did spend time bonding with those riders in their wing. After all, a wing needed trust built between its members for their very lives depended on it. "Clear skies to you Atlas," Midori commented as a greeting to the air dragon. Midori moved his tail and stood to give the rider space, moving back to the rock he had been on before. "You are out late," Tess commented, just trying to find something to say. |

The elegant white dragon strolled smoothly over to the side of his fellow dragon, arranging himself lightly upon his haunches. Slim wings loosely hugged the soft down at his sides, rising and falling with each of slow breath. Tilting his head upwards to the colorless night Atlas sighed softly, admiring the stars falling into his eyes. "We are up at every hour, so there really is no 'late' anymore, but I think we are lucky to have seen this night," Atlas half thought aloud as his attention was swallowed by the stars. "Mhm, say isn't that Swifteer's Talon up there, or a muffin?" Leonik asked wonderously, shaking his finger vaguely at the open sky. The air dragon twisted his head about and shook his head, "All your thoughts belong to your stomach!" Leonik flapped his hand at the air dragon and happily munched on one of the soft muffins. Squinting at the darkness he snapped his fingers and snorted, "That's it- the Celestial Tail! But you hafta admit it does look like a muffin, right?" "Speaking of which! Would either of you care for one of these tasty morsels?" Strolling over to Tess he offered her the muffin bag, a kind and curious tilt to his head. The dark wells of his eyes shone with sincerity and the curious echo of concern. "Anything else you two might need? Atlas is quick as a wink, we could fetch it for you and be back in a heartbeat!" |

Midori watched the Air as the larger dragon settled next to him. His dark violet eyes followed Atlas's own gaze for a moment before he looked again back to the other dragon. Midori considered the Air's words, flicking his tail a little for a moment. "We are lucky for each night we are given these days," Midori commented, his voice soft as if not to disturb Atlas's gaze. "And fortunate that this night is a quiet one." He shifted a little. Everyone was weary, battlemarked and worn, and yet they still survived in this pocket that for now was home. Who could say how long they would remain here. The future was always uncertain, and though years had passed without having to move, no one could say that all of this would still be here tomorrow. There was no end in sight, and yet little moments like this one were precious, a time where one could at least let the thought of war leave one's thoughts. Just for a little while. Tess watched Leonik gaze at the stars for a few moments. Deep inside she wished she could share his ability to just be so lighthearted. There were times that Tess was able to just let go. However, she felt things deeply, and the sense of loss, heartache, fear, and worry over the war had rooted themselves very deeply. Her gaze slipped to the ground as she drifted into her thoughts again. Only to have her gaze pulled back up when Leonik came over to her, offering a muffin. Tess looked up at him in surprise at the concern in his expression, when his tone remained so light. She managed a small smile to him as she reached into the bag, not wanting to be rude to his offer or his company. "Thank you," Tess told him, choosing a muffin though she had little appetite. "And I think Midori and I are all right, we don't need anything." She moved over a little on the rock to offer him some room to sit down. Trying to fill the awkward silence, Tess found herself asking "How have you been Leonik?" |

Swinging his about the gentle hook of his beak Atlas blinked slowly at Midori, but even the moonlight silver unable to relieve the deep gauge of age that cut into the blue depths of his eyes. A smoothe breeze gusted from the slots on his beak, a heavy sigh that emptied his chest to a hollowed bank. "This is the loudest quiet I have ever heard. You see, it is in the silence I can hear the future coming-- charging for us, ever relentless and venegful of the past," Atlas rumbled, finding it rather comforting for once to be able to so readily expose his emotions to a smart mind. After all his rider counted amoung the understanding, but not the intellectual which Atlas craved. Hiking his wings up further onto his back he swanned his neck back over his shoulders, suddenly rigid and embarressed. Had revealed too many of his inner thoughts? Oh by the Empress, he was ashamed, plush feathered crest falling flat against his neck, slicked and shimmering white. A light punch bounced off his tightly wound haunch, and he quickly glanced to she his rider grinning encouragingly before turning back to his own matters. Leonik grinned victoriously as Tess accepted one of the muffins, biting into a fresh pastry and in turn giving his scarce beard a fresh dusting of crumbs. "D'ohh, ehhs dun prettech gut-- ah! Yah, we've been takin' down Taints left and right! And I don't mean to dinner-" He replied and knocked his elbow against hers in a smooth, gentle motion as his brow shifted in a 'get ittt?' fashion. |
