Even after the sun had set, the Jungle was always alive; buzzing, singing, croaking, the animals never seemed to rest. Once the sun came up, they seemed to switch shifts, the crickets and frogs being replaced by phoenixes and songbirds. But for now, it was the dead of night, and insects buzzed incessantly. They were attracted by the small fire that crackled amidst the nature sounds, encircled by large stones to keep it contained. Seren tossed a piece of damp, moss coated wood into the blaze, hoping to cause a smoke to make the blood sucking vermin to go away. Kemet was beside her, massive body slowly rising and falling in the swells of sleep. Seren was leaning against her luxurious fur, wrapped up in a leather blanket against the winter chill. She smiled as Kemets paws and nose twitched in her sleep, the wolf obviously fatigued from their run. They had been traveling most of the day and were currently in the south of the jungle, hunkered down for a few hours of rest. Seren would let Kemet rest, then wake up the dire so she could sleep a bit. Even with fewer tainted, the wild was dangerous. There was a time when she would climb a tree and tie herself to a branch to sleep peacefully, and even then she was so wary that she only caught a few hours at most. But, that was all she needed. Yawning, she poked the wood in the fire a bit more, the damp wood taking to the heat and producing a wispy, moss-scented smoke. The bugs were dwindling now, either smothered by the smoke or repelled by the sweet and repugnant smell. She was glad to be free of them finally, they were starting to bite and itch... In the distance, a twig snapped, and Seren straightened her back and looked to the direction of the noise. The insects and frogs droned on, but nothing exploded from the bush, and after a few moments she slowly relaxed, leaning back into Kemets fur. It was probably just a snake falling off a branch... |

Kiaya and Mohegan pressed on through the thick foliage of the jungle. They’d been heading southeast from Vien after having a ‘disagreement’ with her latest employer. She didn’t remember his name, didn’t care to. A wealthy fat man who had sent for her services. When she and Mohegan arrived at his estate, she’d found to her dismay that the man had a harem of women; the reason he’d called to her was because his favorite kind of woman was a willful one. He liked the ordeal of breaking them. However, he hadn’t anticipated just how fierce her Dire could be. It only took a few moments for Mohegan to rip through many of his guards like paper, all the while Kiaya stood firmly with a feral grin on her face. As Mo took out the last of the guards inside the main hall, and before the others from the outside had entered Kiaya had commanded her Dire to remove the things that caused many women displeasure. When the patrolling guards finally made their way into the main hall, they stopped dead in their tracks to see the dismembered remains of their overseer and the large Dire standing over him; fangs now bared at them. “If you don’t want any more lives taken tonight, gentlemen, I’d suggest you let these women go and allow us to be on our way.” Kiaya smiled as she thought back to that event. Mohegan had been proud that her rider had finally shown a little bit of sympathy for her fellow humans by freeing those women. However, what amused the rider greatly was just how upset Mo had gotten over the blood stains in her fur. Mohegan began to whine as her fatigue set in. Kiaya patted her side. “I know, girl. Let’s just go a little bit further before we settle down for the night.” Mohegan begrudgingly agreed with a huff. They went a little bit further, trekking deeper and deeper into the harsh terrain. Suddenly, Mohegan stopped dead in her tracks and sniffed the air. Ki could smell it to. Smoke, from a fire. Not far off she gauged. “Let’s go check it out huh” The rider suggested. “It might be abandoned for all we know!” Mohegan turned and looked at her rider with a certain distaste. It was a look Ki knew almost too well. Fat chance and you know it... “Hey, don’t act like we’ve never found one before! How many times have I told you? People. Are. Dumb!” Mohegan rolled her eyes before finally conceding to Kiaya’s wishes. Though when they approached the camp, Ki wished they’d never done so. Before them lay a huge sundasher and it's rider. They seemed to be resting for the night. They both immediately knew this was one of the biggest mistakes either of them could have made and began to slowly creep away. Then, a twig snapped loudly beneath Kiaya’s foot. Rider and Dire quickly hunkered down as low as they could behind some dense underbrush, watching as the rider perked up at the sound and looked straight in their direction. Kiaya could barely breathe under the young woman’s gaze. It took them a long while before either of them had the resolve to move again, even after the rider fell back against her dire once more. Ki was too busy focusing on the other pair that she didn’t notice how close Mohegan was trailing behind her. As they tried to make their quiet escape, Mo stepped too far and her large, heavy paw came crashing painfully down on Ki’s foot, causing the woman to cry out loud enough to wake the pair by the fire. |

It wasn't just a snake falling from a branch. The yelp of pain that followed the twig snap only moments later fully alerted Seren to that. With a gasp, she was up and poised with a knife, Kemet leaping to life as though she had never been sleeping with fangs bared and snarling like a beast. But, she smelled familiarity! A sister! A fellow dire. In an instant, monster became puppy as her whole demeanor changed. She yipped playfully and hopped toward Mohegan, finding the other pair with ease and leaving Serena confused behind her. "Who is it, Kem?" The human asked, trotting over. She received overwhelming emotion of calm and joy from the hound as she came upon another sundasher and her rider attempting to hide. Well. Sort of. The rider it seemed had her foot trodden on by her wolf, which was the source of the painful yelp in the first place. "Oh. Uh. Hi?" She offered. "Are you okay? Your wolf didn't break your foot or anything, yeah?" Seren asked with concern. Dires were heavy beasts as it were... "I didn't know there were other scouts out tonight." She cocked her head and squinted her eyes. "Actually, I don't think I even know you from the Academy at all." While the two humans talked, Kemet was eagerly sniffing at Mohegan, eyes glinting happily. She was very happy it was a Sister and not an enemy, no. This meant she could be happy and calm. She licked Mohegans snout, twin tails wagging excitedly at the interaction. |

[OOC: Mohegan’s actually a duskstrider. ^^] Kiaya was sitting cross legged on the ground, clutching her pained foot, when the woman and her dire appeared before them. Her body tensed in defense, but relaxed when the sundasher greeted Mohegan with warmth. Mo responded in kind by nuzzling the other dire’s neck and nipping playfully at her ear; her earlier fatigue subsided for the moment. Realizing they were not in immediate danger, Ki turned her attention to the rider that had addressed her with apparent concern. “I don’t think it’s broken, no.” She asserted, using her fingers to measure the amount of her injury. “Heavily bruised and swollen on the other hand...” At the mention of the Academy, Kiaya chewed the inside of her mouth to keep from scowling. “I’m not a scout and no longer associated with the Academy.” She replied, making sure to keep her face stoic and her voice even as not to offend the other rider. Her distaste for the Academy might not sit well with this one and her injury may require some assistance. Ki tried to put some weight on it and agony shot through her like lightning; promptly causing her to cry out again. Mohegan, who’d been preoccupied with the other dire, snapped her attention back to Kiaya at the sound of her pained shriek. She trotted over and licked her ankle before turning back to the sundasher and whimpered a plea for help. |

Seren nodded, glad that the other hadn't actually broken her ankle from the dires weight. A bruising would be hardly pleasant, however... And she wasn't associated with the Academy? Could handlers even do that? Just leave the Academy? Well, now was certainly not the time for those questions; this woman needed some help, as was made obvious by her cry in pain when she tried to put weight on it. Kemet whined when the other dire came to her handler, distressed with her ears against her skull and tails sticking straight out. Seren sent a calming aura to the wolf, standing and walking over, kneeling by the other handler. "Come on and lean against me," She offered, sliding a cautious arm around her back. "You'll need to rest, I'm pretty sure. At least you guys can come by the fire." |

Kiaya took the other handler up on her offer. She mentally derided herself as the woman helped to support her weight. All it would have taken to prevent this would have been a simple little glance. As Mohegan trotted beside them, she gave Kiaya a message through their bond. Yet again, another cliche from her dire. "Thanks." Kiaya said as she was sat down in front of the fire. Mohegan laid down beside her Rider and started gently licking her ankle again, as if in apology. Kiaya sighed. There was no use crying over some spilled milk and she stroked her Dire's mane with affection. "Name's Kiaya, by the way. And this is Mohegan. I apologize if we frightened you. Never know just who to trust." |

Seren helped the girl limp by the fire, noting how sad her wolf looked at having inflicted such an injury. As long as it wasn't broken, the other woman should be alright. Kemet, sending wary, questioning emotions through Seren, tilted her head. When Seren nodded, the wolf plopped down by Mohegan happily. They hadn't been at the academy in a while, nor seen other wolves. And wolves, even giant rideable ones, were very social creatures... "I'm Seren," The handler said with a small smile. "And this is Kemet." The wolf barked gently at her name, black lips pulled into a would be smile. "And it's not a problem! It is... dangerous out here to say the least. Even with the tainted pushed so far back, there are always dangerous folks and beasts around." Seren grabbed a log and tossed it into the flames to feed it, rubbing her hands on her pants. "I hope your foot is alright... I know there's a cool stream you could wash it in if the swelling is still terrible in the morning," Seren stated, sitting the opposite side of the flames. "I mean if you wanted you could go there now but I've noted a wyvern family who enjoy drinking there and, well, they're nocturnal..." She realized she was rambling slightly, clamping her mouth shut. The other handler was probably as tired as she had been and would want to rest... |

"You're telling me." Kiaya and Mohegan had had their fair share of run ins with dangerous creatures about. Thankfully, they were a skilled and formidable pair and usually got out with barely a scratch. Usually. She looked at Seren at the mention of the stream and a wyvern family nearby. "We've tussled with their lot before and not keen to seek it out. Wyverns are fierce and unyielding when threatened." Kiaya stated as she ran her hand across her swollen foot. "I'll rest this foot until morning. Getting to our destination won't be a problem as I can simply ride Mohegan to keep from agitating it." The Academy was still a long way off, a few weeks if Kiaya remembered correctly. She looked at Mohegan again, who had closed her eyes in an attempt to sleep. It sure sounded good right about now. "For now, how about a little rest?" Kiaya asked before laying back onto the ground at looked up at the stars. At their twinkling, her mind began to wander. |
