RETIRED/NPC There were days when each hour Was a war I fought to survive There were nights full of nightmares And I dreaded closing my eyes There were skies that burst open With a downpour to drown me alive But the world took a spark Like a match in the dark And the fire brought me to life… Character Number- 14th Name- Kelsenna Dorienne Age- 60 Gender- Female Sexuality- Heterosexual Kelsenna ref by the lovely Kess <3 Appearance- The first time you see Kelsenna, you’re bound to notice a few things rather…odd about her. First of them being her hair. It is white. Shockingly white. Though she looks like she can’t be a day over forty she’s got the hair of an old woman. In her youth, her hair was originally colored a light strawberry blonde, and on most days she could nearly be called a red-head. But in her time spent as a Taint with Gadeirus out in Desolation, the mutations that began to affect her dragon began to creep across her side of the bond. By the time that she was back in the lands of the Academy once more and healed, it was merely the roots of her hair that were beginning to fade into white. But given time, and several haircuts, it was proved that the damage was done, and the hair had turned permanently white. In accompaniment to this, she has an intriguingly striking set of eyes (though some may go so far as to call them intimidating). Like her hair, the Taint mutations managed to claim one more aspect of her to add to her odd looks. Her eyes that had once been light green sharpened and yellowed into a bright gold. The pupil of her eyes as well, underwent a change, turning cat-like and narrow. It works just as well as any feline’s too, widening in darkness and narrowing in high light. Aside from being relatively annoying to explain to people, it increases her night vision somewhat and makes it easier for her to skulk around the dustier, darker, sections of the Archives without worrying about tripping over anything and maiming herself. Aside from these oddities, Kelsenna looks like a regular human, standing at a very unintimidating height of five foot five. Her eyes are plagued by what seem like constant dark circles from many sleepless nights spent researching. Her complexion is incredibly pasty, proving that she spends more time indoors and out of the sunlight doing her research than time devoted to the field and gathering of information. Her hair is relatively long, hanging past her shoulders and due to that fact, is more often than not restrained in loose haphazard knots, tails, and buns at the back of her neck to keep out of her way. When it comes to attire, Kelsenna keeps it basic. Typical rider garbs, including the academy’s own fatigues makes it easy for her to figure out what she needs to wear for the day. A pair of breeches and she’s usually set. Most of the time, her appearance is hap-hazard at best. With her odd looks and the stares she often gets from some people, or the leery glances at those who know of her history, she tends to avoid people and hole herself up in her quarters or within a private section of the Academy to get her research and writing done. Beneath the clothing however, there’s a whole different story played out in the skin. Though she is pale as the moon is white, her skin is still dark enough that broad networks of scars can be seen making their way across her body. One of the most significant she has covers the left half of her torso. A crisscrossing network of fine, moss-like scars that stretch across her breast to where her heart resides beneath her skin. This fine token of affection was a gift from a Tainted Lightning that triggered the shattering of her and her bonded’s crystal. A second scar overlaps the first, covering more of her back than her front. Aside from these two, there are also several miscellaneous smaller scars that are found along her arms and hands. Her crystal is worn in the traditional fashion of most riders, upon a leather cord, wrapped in a rather basic hold of silver and steel wire. The stone that bonded her to Gadeirus is a round piece of white opal, that shimmers in several multi-hues. Personality- Introvert, Prickly, Passionate, Focused, Intellectual Whenever there is a question there is always an answer. And wherever there is an odd occurrence or a strange phenomena posing questions to dragons and their riders, you can bet your boots that Kelsenna will be there alongside several others attempting to unlock the mysteries that it represents. Ever inquisitive, ever thinking, ever working, Kelsenna enjoys her work and has been known to burn the midnight oil on many occasions. It’s more likely, if you’re looking for her, to search in her office or the archives in the dead of night to find her, rather than her quarters or her bed. Even in the disarray it may sometimes appear, she hardly ever sleeps within the sheets laid therein. As her isolation tends to suggest however, Kelsenna isn’t much for socializing. It’s rare that she’ll insert herself into a situation that places her with people. It isn’t that she doesn’t know how to interact with others (well it may have something to do with that and some unpolished manners) so much as she’s relatively uncomfortable with being around too many people at once. More likely, it could be called a social anxiety than an actual inability to interact. If she is looking for you and she does have something to say though, she tends to have little trouble saying. As a matter of fact, Kelsenna can be down right blunt, and her words harsh and stinging. She comes off as abrasive the first few times that she encounters people, but several know that it’s merely a veil. To those that she befriends and trusts, there is a deeper persona that lays within her. An affectionate, teasing, motherly sort of creature that tends to find joy in watching others grow in the world around them, to see them succeed where maybe at one time she had failed. She thrives on helping others learn, whether it is simple logic or if it’s natural theories and principles. If she can teach others to love what she loves, or see what it is she likes so much in theories, equations, research, history, logic, then she’ll feel fulfilled. Never though, has she been overbearing to others. If they are unwilling to learn, she will simply brush it off, and she will go back to her business. She sees no reason to teach those who believe that their cups are already full. As you might have guessed, Kelsenna is a smart cookie. Though she spent the first few decades of her bonding with Gadeirus as a soldier, that time was nurtured through the voices and words of authors found deep within the Archives. Nothing was off limits for her. Whether it was the local flora and fauna of Esam or the history of the Academy’s creation, it was all filed neatly away, and is ready to be used again at any time should she have use of it. Though Kelsenna is relatively easy to be around when you’re someone she knows, she does seem to have one exception to that rule. Her own dragon, Gadeirus. In her time in the Desolation underneath the sway of the Taint’s rule, he became a manic beast that was hell-bent on causing as much destruction and blood-shed as he could, a slave to his own instinctive lusts. Though she sees that now he is no longer such a creature, that he has, in fact, done a near three sixty and become something much more meek and submissive than he once was, she’s still on edge around him. He instilled a fear of himself in her in their time as a Tainted pair, and it still lingers. She’s seen his power first hand, and even worse, seen his fury directed at her. She’s also seen him regress on occasion, and knows that his dark nature is still lingering somewhere beneath the surface. As sad as it is…she doesn’t fully trust him. Rank- Scholar, Ex-Taint. History- Kelsenna came from the world of the Academy, born and raised. Her father was a dragon-rider, bonded to a Lightning dragon, and her mother was a healer who worked in the infirmary. Though she had no bonded dragon of her own, she was still beloved, and they still married and had a child together. A small dwelling outside of Lihn was where her mother resided when she wasn’t working within the walls of the Academy, and it was from there that most of Kelsenna’s earliest childhood memories began. Her father was always in and out of her life, mostly a constant, but other times absent for long stretches of time. His duties as a Claw to a wing kept him busy most of the time, and his time allotted to his family, no matter how precious they were to him, was fewer than he would have liked. Her mother made the best of it, and when she was old enough, began bringing Kelsenna out to the Academy with her when she was able to begin working again. Oh what thrilling days those were for the young girl. Roaming vast halls made larger by the eyes of a child. Spending time in the infirmary wandering around and talking to dragons and their riders alike. Being able to pet the large wolves that seemed so tame in the hands of their handlers. On more than one occasion, when her mother was swamped with work and incapable of keeping an eye on her inquisitive child herself, Kelsenna was handed off to a rider pair and their dragon to be chaperoned for the day. More or less this was a harrowing experience for the rider and dragon, but to Kels it was quite possibly the most thrilling thing she’d ever done. Growing up amongst dragons, it was easy enough for Kels to get her heart set on wanting to bond to a giant creature of her very own that she could call a friend for life. After all, everyone at the Academy who had their dragons or Dires certainly seemed all the happier for it, even her father and his lightning dragon were rarely ever at odds with each other, and whenever such a thing did happen, they quickly made up and were grand companions once more soon after. More than a love of dragons blossomed in her childhood however. In her youth, on one rather exciting bout of ‘hide and seek’, Kelsenna went darting into the Archives and found to her amazement a hall of scrolls, tomes, and unbound pages full of different things. Forgetting the games, she spent the better part of an hour before her chaperone found her, simply flipping through large tomes and pages, admittedly at that point, those that had beautiful illustrations. In the years after, Kelsenna became caught between two worlds. The world of play and the world of learning, taking each of them in her small hands and holding them close and nurturing them into highlights of her character. By the time that she was twelve, Kelsenna had started to follow the wyrmling and candidate classes around like a baby duck following its parent. She knew, based on her parents occasional glances at her and deep, whispered conversations, that her time to walk into the candidate class as she dearly wished was nearing arrival. Mostly the lesson masters humored her, but more often than not, she was forced to stand back and watch along with draconic parents, and other riders and humans alike. When she was fourteen, her parents acquiesced to her wishes and allowed her to join the incoming candidate class. Though the work around the Academy was hard, Kelsenna stubbornly and steadfastly stuck with the regime, and was eventually rewarded with the others who had stayed within the class, with the opportunity to visit the eggs during the touching and finally the hatching after the females of Sekkai had risen for the year. Standing nervously on the warm sands, her parents watching in the stands, she waited anxiously for her chance to address Kazuko for the hopeful chance that she would be granted a crystal and a soul bond of her very own. Several other candidates were already turning their own stones over in their hands and looking hopefully in the direction of the rocking eggs. Kazuko didn’t disappoint her. With a slight smile on her massive lips, the Celestial handed the girl an oval of bright shimmering white opal, nearly as luminous as the Ghost’s own scales. Her partner followed soon after that. Spilling from a water egg residing in the bowl before it’s breed-kin mother, Gadeirus clambered out, ready to face the world. He marched right up to his bonded, declaring her as his in an abrupt, but knightly fashion, planting his rear in the sand he looked around the stands, as if daring any others to challenge his rightful selection. That done, they were ushered off into the beginning of the rest of their lives together. Gadeirus was head-strong, hungry to prove himself, and very outspoken. Kelsenna liked most of that about him, though his increasing fascination in the Wings and their far-off explorations had her relatively concerned. Her interest in the written word had been growing since she had been able to understand more of what lay within the dusty pages of the Archives. Gadeirus had no patience for book-learning, and reveled in every step along the way that they took in their wyrmling classes, from fighting to elemental control, to working as a Wing with his other class-mates. By the time that they had graduated, he was pushing all of his capability at persuasion at his rider in an attempt to get her to join a Wing alongside him. He was desperate to show the Academy just how useful he could be. Surely they needed him! No, not just him, of course not, how much they needed both of them. It was only natural. He was a bulky, muscular Water with more than enough capability to duke it out with any enemy that Sekkai had to face! Finally, his rider’s resolve crumbled, and she consented to allow them to join a Wing. Gadeirus, positively thrilled, had them join up as a Horn, figuring himself and his bulk more than capable of taking on the full brunt of whatever came at him as the front lines of the Wing. For almost twenty years, they fulfilled their duties without fault, and without incident. Skirmishes were few and far between, though their patrols were wide and varied alongside the men and women of their wing. Then one day, when the baffled Wings began to notice more activity to the west, went out on a wide patrol, disaster struck. Though familiar with most faces of the Tainted dragons and their odd, warped powers, they were unprepared for a lance of ferocity that came down upon them. A small battalion of Taints emerged from the depths of the mountains, surging up to break apart the wing and create a chaotic battle for the survival of either side. Gadeirus, charging in, found himself locked first with a Mycotic, whom he quickly dispatched. While he dealt the killing blow, a Tainted Lightning came up from behind him and launched a bolt of electricity at his back. The fork found it’s mark, striking into Gadeirus’ thick hide just behind his neck, and arcing lances of lightning across his back. One stray bolt collided with his rider, the electricity stopping her heart mid-beat. Kelsenna was dead. Agony combined through both the pain of the lightning that had struck and the loss of his rider shook him. His crystal fragmented, and with a wail of anguish and fury, he turned on the Tainted Lightning, intending to kill it. Outmaneuvering the bulky Water, whose skill would be in close combat grabbling, but not in aerodynamic maneuvers, he swept past the dragon’s back to repeat his previous maneuver, landing upon Gadeirus’ shoulders and unleashing a torrent of energy into the Water’s body, seizing his wings up so that both dragons dropped. A stray fork of electricity found the body of his rider once again, and like a defibrillator on a patient a doctor was losing, it jump-started her heart back into action. Despite this, Gadeirus’ crystal still remained fragmented, and both pairs were lost to the Taint and Nidhogg’s dark influences. Locked in combat for a few more vicious moments, Gadeirus launched a scalding breath of water directly into the Lightning’s face, burning his eyes and causing him to flee, even as the Water circled lower and lower to the ground, his seizing muscles allowing him no more apt flight plan than ‘down’. Above them, the Sekkain forces scattered, making full haste back to the Academy, outnumbered and outmatched, they could do little aside from lick their wounds and count their losses. Lured by a dark whispering voice in his mind, when he was able, Gadeirus flew to the west. It was there that he and his rider would reside for the next few years. In that time, Gadeirus would fall to his darkest instincts, becoming more violent and ruled by his emotions and animalistic natures. Kelsenna faded into the background, wishing not to be the outlet of any of his all too common fits of rage. She knew that Taint could kill its rider and survive. She did not want to become a casualty of her own dragon. While they remained in the Tainted Desolation, the woman noticed things beginning to happen. Her eyes changed color and shape, and her hair appeared to be going prematurely white. Gadeirus as well, was hardly unaffected, strange appendages beginning to grow from his sides, and fins emerging along his hind-quarters where before they had simply been sleek and smooth skin. When the time came for the Tainted force to surge dark fingers across the Sekkain continent and aim itself at the shining beacon to the east, the monster within Gadeirus was eager to join the slaughter he knew would come. Kelsenna, little more than a quiet presence upon his back in the remnants of their Sekkain-crafted saddle, had little say in his decisions, and was little more than an unwilling participant as Gadeirus joined the Shells and scattered troops that had begun their march across the vast plains. Spear-headed by the mountainous creature, Erebus, their victory was more than assured, his titanic stature dwarfing the knights of Sekkai and causing them to shy away in fear. Gadeirus laughed at their fear, even as he swept into the ranks that tried to rise and meet them, cutting a swath of death in their midst. Just as the battle for the Academy is recorded in ink within the Academy’s archives, so to is it scribed deep into Gadeirus’ mind, in shadows, blood, and screams. It is a memory he rarely touches upon, and if he does it is generally in fleeting glimpses, not wishing to dwell upon the horror that he caused. In their victory, the Taints desecrated the halls, tearing down the dome, rending furniture and paintings, felling walls, destroying stock and land. Gadeirus reveled in it all, even as a small part of his brain quailed in horror as he helped to rip apart the structure of the hatching sands where he had been born. In the shattered husk of the Academy, he and his rider decided to dwell with handfuls of other Taints who saw the spoils fit to their tastes. Unbeknownst to Gadeirus, except perhaps in that small part of his mind, he chose his old quarters as his ‘new’ dwelling within the ‘renovated’ Academy walls. Cleared of most furniture and hardly having the homey touch it once did, it barely stirred a memory, though he noted that Kelsenna at least, seemed more at home here than she had out in the Murks and Barren Coast. Perhaps it was the roof over her head, he mused, but in truth, she recognized the building as much as that small part of Gadeirus did, though she spoke little of her memories of it, knowing it would only bring Gadeirus to ire and risk her well-being. Several years were spent reclining in what Gadeirus could only call a lap of luxury after the disgusting filth of the Taint owned lands. But all times in paradise of course come with a cost. Given the time that they had needed, the scattered forces of Sekkai managed to regroup and strike. The motley crew of Taints that had been left to garrison their latest, and most prized acquisition struck back, or fled, some fearful for their lives now that Erebus was not there to aid them, others enraged that the fools had dared to come forth after they’d already been driven away once before. The Tainted force was not nearly as powerful as it had once been, and they were overwhelmed by the knights that had come home to fight for what was rightfully theirs. Gadeirus found himself fighting for his life despite his rage, his blood-thirst, and the urgings from the dark force on the back of his mind. A Fire rent open red lines along his back, and flung his rider from her moorings, throwing her like a rag-doll into a heap of ruin and rubble. Driven by an insane blood-lust by the still form of his rider, he rose to meet the Fire in a deadly brawl. The beast was too large for him, sending him crashing into the unstable remnants of a hall. The ruin collapsed upon his form, burying him. The Fire moved on, leaving him, no doubt, to die of whatever wounds he had obtained through the structure’s failure. The victorious battle for the Academy by the Sekkains passed in a haze of pain and blurred time for the Water as he struggled vainly and weakly against the detritus that had him pinned beneath it’s bulk. Finally, he simply lay there, ready to die. He was unaware of what had happened to his rider, his fragmented crystal hardly allowed for the luxury of her presence of mind anyway. Hopelessness consumed him as the irritated voice of his Lord slipped away from his mind to see other matters that weren’t a cause that were lost to him. In the remaining light of the day, Sekkai soldiers began to walk to battle-field, examining corpses, claiming bodies, and slaying those who were too far gone to be saved. The last act, Gadeirus knew, was one that would surely be reserved for him. But instead of Death’s angel, it was Mercy that stopped before him, outlined by the dying rays of the day. Karma Khariss and her rider had accompanied the fleet of healers who had followed several hours behind the initial assault, ready to heal whoever had been harmed, whether physically or through the fracturing of their crystal. It was her who found Gadeirus half buried beneath the rubble of a fallen barracks. Rather than slay him upon the spot, she took pity upon the monster he had become, and saw fit to use her healing breath upon him. Such a burning agony Gadeirus had never before endured as the power of the Karma routed out the evil within him and ripped it out by the roots. Were it not for the heavy weight of the debris atop him, he surely would have caused himself injury with his violent thrashing and writhing. When all had ceased, he was removed from the rubble, and taken to the encampment where the healers were residing, and left there to drop into black oblivion that had been hazing upon his vision since Khariss had healed him. When he awoke, he saw to his extreme pleasure and shame, that his rider was beside him. Kelsenna was badly off from her throw from his back. One arm was broken, and her head was concussed. The Rosemary dragons said they had done all they could for now, and that they would have to wait and see if she would recover. Gadeirus lamented, terrified that after he had just found his light once again through the grace and mercy of Khariss that he might lose it again should his rider slip beyond his reach. Despite his own wounds and needs for rest, he took up silent vigil beside her, waiting, watching, praying, hoping, that somehow she would be alright. When she awoke two days, later, she was relieved to see that Gadeirus at least, was back to his old self. Aside from her odd gold eyes with their narrow pupils and the whiteness that was creeping into her hair which could merely be an indicator of stress, the woman held no side effects of the Taints that were more obvious, nor did Gadeirus. For several years under Nidhogg’s influence, the scant mutations that they managed to get away with were a blessing to both of them. Things could hardly be considered normal, by that point however. The Academy, though reclaimed by Sekkai, was still in a ruinous heap, and in need of mending. The forces of Sekkai, though having grown strong again, still needed to develop further if they were to stand a chance against the Taints that would no doubt regroup and return to strike again when time and fortune appeared to tip in their favor. Though both rider and dragon were more than aware of the fact that the war would still need to be fought, recently mended once more, all traces of aggression and thirst to prove himself seemed to have melted out of Gadeirus entirely. Confiding in his rider, he announced that he would have greatly preferred to stay out of the line of fire and work behind the scenes, supporting the Academy in some other way if they could find it. Kelsenna, who after her time in the Tainted lands, acting as the puppet rider for her aggressive, blood-thirsty dragon, agreed, feeling she’d seen more than enough violence to last her a lifetime. So, putting their heads together, they sought out a new purpose for themselves, a way to prove themselves in a new light to those of the Academy instead of their original labels of ‘ex-tainted’. One made itself apparent rather quickly. Influenza breeds had managed to concoct a virus, non-lethal, but ravaging none-the-less, that attacked the more powerful breeds of dragons that Sekkai had within it’s arsenal, rendering them sterile and incapable of breeding and producing a healthy clutch of eggs. Several dragons had already been lost in the disaster of the initial realization, as their mal-formed children blocked the vital passages within their bodies and created complications that healers could not fix. Both Kelsenna and Gadeirus both knew that where there was a disease, surely there was a cure. They threw themselves into the work for researching a cure for this malignant affliction alongside handfuls of other scholars who, though initially distrustful of the odd-looking woman and her frightful gold eyes, were glad of any additional help they could obtain. Though the halls of information that had been their Archives was severely decimated, they had enough data and test subjects to at the very least, begin cataloguing more data to record the happenings that they hoped would bear fruit. As the years passed, fewer people continued to pursue the problem of curing their dragons, lamenting that it was merely something that they would have to leave to fate to sort out. Those who were left to pursue the problem did so quietly, delving deep within the depths of the archives and often remaining unseen in their quest. Kelsenna, as stubborn as she’d always been, was not one of the few to merely bow out gracefully, the quiet, reclusive work was something she was quite comfortable with. There were few that sought her out, and judgmental stares were hard to come by when you were buried behind stacks of musty pages and tomes. But it came to the unfortunate point, that it was not by the hands of the Academy’s scholars that a cure for the ailment to their dragons arose, but rather from the Hybrids. With Mara’s somewhat scathing, but altogether beneficial work accomplished within the walls of the Academy, Kelsenna’s greatest purpose and perhaps her hope in her own eyes for a personal sort of redemption since her recovery from the Taint was all but lost to her, leaving her with little she could think of to pursue aside from hobbies that she had once had before. And in her mind, those could hardly be described as a noble cause similar to that which she’d had before. With the war finished, and a new power on the rise to the West, Kelsenna has begun to turn her attention to recording and preservation of the older texts that had survived the wars or had been reclaimed from several Tainted dragon’s ‘treasure troves’, revealing information that the Academy had forgotten, or allowed to slip from their reach. There are still many gaps of unknown nature to be filled, but there is surely plenty to add, both from personal experience and from observations of others and world around the Water pair. Pet(s)- None The Dragon I’m sick of the past I can’t erase A jumble of footprints And hasty steps I can’t retrace. The mountain of things I still regret Is a vile reminder that I would rather just forget. Name- Gadeirus Age- 46 Gender- Male Element- Water Parents- Water Nehalennia x Sonic Bolero Siblings- Sonic Cadence (Full Sister) Children- None Nieces and Nephews- Female Sonic Kokopelli , Female Air Audere Height: 15 feet , Length: 95ft , Wingspan: 228ft Reference Sheet Linework by Seiss <3 Color by me Appearance- Generally when one pictures a Water, or when they see the breed for themselves, the most common thing they’ll come across is a streamlined and sleek creature clearly designed for worming it’s way through it’s element. They are lithe and winding, able to shift and move and sway as easily as their own element. But when one looks at Gadeirus, there is easily the ability to raise a few skeptical brows at the fact that he’s a Water dragon at all. What he could be would be up to debate, but most certainly, he wouldn’t be comparable to a blue beast of the waters. And yet, as his own elemental prowess and heritage show, he quite clearly is. Gadeirus is a beefy creature, and what he lacks in length, he makes up for in height and muscle. With a thick neck and a heavy barrel chest, he is clearly built with power in mind. Thick muscles kept under oil black skin are shrouded in a layer of inches thick blubber that acts as an insulator as well as a natural sort of armor for protecting the dragon in the countless battles that he’s faced. While the dragon looks somewhat fatty in appearance, if you were to feel or see him move, if you saw how he interacted with his element, you’d realize your mistake quite quickly. He’s got a deceptive strength hidden beneath his weighty hide and carried upon relatively short legs common to his breed. A thick jawed skull on a heavy neck is clearly built for crushing power that could make even the most powerful bones buckle and crunch if carelessly allowed to be gripped by his fangs. No horns adorn this leviathan’s skull, but a relatively short frill appearing to be more baggy skin that stretches and flexes as he moves crowns his head. It spans down the length of his short bulldog-like neck, hanging in loose folds of skin that can be gripped and torn at but cause his muscles little to no damage. Above golden eyes, two nostrils positioned like a dual set of blow holes reside that open and close with every breath, and can be forced shut for when he dives. The fangs within his jaws are needle sharp short points, and resting within that is an expansive pink tongue that often helps to shape his jets of water as he blasts them about. While generally a keen shot, his small eyes attest to generally poor eye-sight that is sometimes improved by a dragon’s adaptation of glasses when seeing to scholarly work. Most of the time however, echolocation is the name of the game with Gadeirus, and high clicks and whistles, sometimes above the frequency that humans can detect help him fill in the last pieces of details that his small eyes may miss. This gift from his Sonic heritage has been perfected to Gadeirus’ own uses and is useful both on and off land, and is frequently used while he’s hunting a meal underwater. A rippling white frill beginning at the base of his throat just beneath his chin trails down to Gadeirus’ massive barrel chest. Large lungs are able to take and hold breath for extended periods of time that allow him to swim uninhibited for long minutes, even if he is not using his magic and his strange addition of gills upon his neck. The openings are generally held tightly closed with a flex of muscle long strengthened over the years. These allow him to extract oxygen from the element that he wields if he and his rider should be spending vast amounts of time underwater for whatever reason. They are bright pink when opened, clearly visible against his hide and an easily exploited weak spot when they’re exposed. When they’re shut however, they just appear to be shining black ridges along the side of his neck. Nothing of interest to see there. At the base of Gadeirus’ ribs, as well as along the sides and at the top of his back just adjacent to his spine, he has what appear to be the beginnings of small fins. They are dexterous and easily able to be flexed and moved about to catch air or help maneuver himself under water. These were not a part of his body when he was first born. Rather, they began to grow in during his time as a Tainted, and would have continued to grow in, possibly as an extra set of vestigial wings had the pair’s crystal not been repaired. In accompaniment to the pair upon his ribs, there is another set just at the base of his tail, located just in front of a massive fluke. The fluke itself is made of tough cartilage-like muscles and begins to form off the mid-point of his tail. The tail tip itself is visible within the center of the fluke, and offers mild assistance in addition to the powerful sweep of the tail fluke in navigating waters or air. Past battles have scarred this portion of the dragon, taking a notch out of the left side. Trailing up his tail and stopping at his hindquarters are sets of ivory spines that arrange themselves in no particular height order. Some are sharp, others have dulled over time or chipped and lost tips. Made of keratin like his talons, these spines grow and have a tendency to need to be worn down. In times of battles past, Kelsenna had been known to sharpen them into deadly points in times before battle so they could be wielded with deadly force. But now, they are simply filed when required with no purpose for damage immediately thought of. Just ahead of his hind flanks, a large and sturdy dorsal fin, made of the same type of musculature as his tail fluke resides. It lacks the flexibility of his fluke, but it serves a protective service for his crystal. The white opal resides just in the lee of the fin, settled at the base of the cartilage. Broad wings make up most of Gadeirus’ mass in the air and on land. Trailing from shoulder to near halfway down his tail before the membrane ceases, they are large oily black affairs. The phalanges of the wing are clustered closer to the far edges of his wing-tips rather than spread out along the membrane. This allows more ability for air to be caught and billow into his wings, but it hinders his actual control in flight. He is a creature built mostly for water, not for flight, and when his actual bulk does make it into the air, it is anything but graceful. Personality- Dark, Loyal, Embittered, Reclusive, Cowardly Though he is a great and intimidating creature, there is very little to Gadeirus that can actually back up the Water’s appearance. Though he is not a frightful beast, he hardly fits the role of ‘gentle giant’ either. Rather, fearful and cowardly seem to be the name of his archetype. The great brute seems to have lost all taste for anything resembling confrontation, whether it is of physical or verbal nature. Hesitant and fearful, his distaste of argument and brawling has stemmed from an overflow of such activities he endured in his time as a Tainted dragon. Rather than the brave warrior he once was, he’s settled back into the life of a scholar alongside his bonded rather well, cringing away from fake-out blows and hiding away in the confines of his quarters during the extent of the day. Spineless would hardly be a word to describe him, however. As there are times when his personality can take an alarming, and relatively unexpected change. With many Karma healings, there can often be unexpected side effects, such as estranged bonds, and possible bi-polarity caused by lingering remnants of Tainted influences left in the dragon and rider bonds. In Gadeirus’ case, it appears that the latter is the truth. Once in a blue moon, he appears to suffer relapses of his healing, and delve into a darker part of himself. He becomes caustic, quick to anger, and brooding. These are often the occasions in which he will thrust himself farthest away from company, often seeking those he trusts, such as his bonded or his sister for refuge. When faced with others in this particular personality snap, it is best to be wary. As when Gadeirus was formerly Tainted, he was a creature with little mercy and an enjoyment of causing torment. Such facets may linger should his irritation be triggered by some off-setting comment or action. Then one would have due cause to be wary, as though he may not be regarded as intimidating at first, he quickly becomes so when the mood decides to strike. Not to say that he may turn his back on you at a moments notice should the right circumstances breach a trigger. He is a creature who has very strong ties to those that he trusts, after all. His word is something that he considers to be his strongest bond, and once you have it from him, you can rest assured that he will do everything in his power to keep from breaking it. He feels it is one of the few honors he has left. After all, as a dragon who was formerly Tainted, Gadeirus’ regard of himself isn’t nearly as high as that of his rider’s. He realizes that though he has rejoined ranks of the Academy for several decades now, he is still a creature with faults and with the simple stroke of a talon, he could quite easily become as much again. On many an occasion, he’s been known to recycle the hazy memories of his time as a member of the Legion over and over in his head, reliving the atrocities he committed and wishing somehow that he could have mended the damage that he irreparably caused. He considers himself stained, and sometimes wonders if he was worth saving at all.
