The scent of disinfectant and sterile medical tools seeped into Amaunet’s senses, her nose twitching as she poked her head into the infirmary. It was an unpleasant smell to say the least, but not so bad as it could be. The last time she had been here had been nearly a year ago, during a much darker time. Looking at those waiting to see a doctor and receive a room, it was apparent most were there for routine vaccines; check-up or in a few cases, mild injuries that could have been received from activities around the academy. Spying a doctor the Air advanced, pushing the door open with her wing and slipping through she strode forward and approached the doctor, inquiring as to where she might find her bonded who she described as, “A smallish woman, with dark hard and a voice twice the size of a Celestial”. With a chuckle the pair told her that she was in room 10, down the hall and the first door at the end of it. With a thank you, Aun turned. Her body swayed as she walked, trying to avoid loose medical carts, nurses walking and patients coming and going. Her bright tail held in the air as a sign she was coming.

Ducking into the room she saw Elodie slipping her boots on. With a coo she nuzzled the woman, a slight air current picking up in her relief and excitement to see her Bonded. With a slight laugh Elodie wrapped her arms around the Air’s face and gave it a tight squeeze,” Everything is alright Aun, I had a routine check-up and didn’t want to wake you up.” Giving the girl a kiss, Elodie went back to lacing her boots and getting off the examination table. With a nod they left the room and made their way out of the infirmary.
--
Aun let out a soft trill as Elodie pulled herself into the saddle, hooking her feet into the stirrups and belting herself in she grabbed the horn and patted Aun’s shoulder.
“You good to go?” not waiting for an answer, Amaunet took off, her wings outstretched and beating to pull herself up as she filled her lungs with air. Feeling her feet leave the ground her legs snapped up and into her body. Rising through air currents the dragoness tested each looking for the proper updraft that would allow her to just coast all the way to the jungle. Elodie, once they had gotten airborne, unlatched her vest from the saddle and sat up. Sneakily removing one foot from a stirrup she pulled it into her lap to sit more comfortably.

Breathing deeply to keep herself aloft Aun glanced back at her rider who was making herself comfortable for the ride, leaning forward over one of her legs and lightly grooming Aun’s neck fluff. Tilting her face into the sun she weaved air magick around herself as the jungle came within view. Giving a quick click of her jaws Elodie switched herself back into the saddle and re attached herself for landing as Amaunet flipped out her rear wings, bending both pairs in slightly as she went into a nose dive for the tree cover. Her small body slipped between the foliage easily and it was only minutes until the pair had found a clearing for Aun to land.

Stirring up the ground cover Amaunet set down, her feet squishing into the soft, dark earth. The air was heavy, moist and humid with the scent of hundreds of animals that had tracked their way through the area. However the lack of proper airflow made Amaunet feel heavy, her body no longer supported by her element.

“Why are we here again?” The air complained slightly, shaking under the trapped moisture. She preferred the coast, cliffs and plenty of up drafts- free air to fly through. This was out of her element, closed and crowded, dark which made her easy to spot. Casting a salmon glance at Elodie she moved closer, looking to feel protected.
“I was told about a plant, fungus I guess that would help with the migraines I’ve been experiencing. They were running low on stores at the infirmary and I told them if they could show me a picture I could just come out here and get it myself.” Eldoie said with a shrug, pulling out a scrap of paper with a picture of the mushroom; a tree growing variation with a large cap and spiraling stem.
“They said it should be easy enough to spot as they are rather large and near the floor. They’re pretty light in color, green I think with white speckles.” Walking forward, Elodie began the search with dragon in tow.

The Scholar sat on the back of the Rosemary that he was bonded to. If anyone saw him, they’d see that he was annoyed. And that was a fact. Not only had Sirona basically begged him to wake up around 6:00 A.M, she had also not allowed him to change his clothes, brush his teeth, eat, or even bathe. She said that ”It’s no use getting clean, because you’re gonna get dirty soon after.” She sounded so… well, cocky about it. And he didn’t like that.

Whenever Sirona got an idea like this through her head, it meant trouble for them. Not only had they been harmed by her curiosity-fueled exploits, they nearly die almost as often. He had been to the place where they were going repeatedly, most often for her little snail hunts. It was like a drug to her, once she had it, she couldn’t stop. A type of substance that was addictive to dragons. He wanted to write about it, try to get the consumption of the horrid stuff banned, but then again, that’d only upset Sirona. And he couldn’t do it.

Once they were over the dense jungle, he looked down. All of a sudden, he felt dizzy, sick, disoriented… he felt like he was going to vomit. Clearly, the dragon caught sight of his face, and spoke to him. ”Don’t look down, Donn. You know how it makes you feel.” she said in a tone that a mother would use to chide a child. He looked at her, frowning. ”I know, Sirona. It’s just that the place is… well, huge.” he said, giving the jungle one woeful glance. A few long silent minutes passed as she was trying to circle around, to find a suitable landing spot, he decided to break the seemingly endless silence. ”How long should we be here?” he asked, frowning.

The dragon really had no answer to this. She didn’t understand the use of hours, or numbers really. Time passed quickly for her when she was doing something she enjoyed. But she had to answer him, or he’d get more upset. ”A few hours, at the least.” she replied, looking over at him with one large golden eye. His eyebrow was raised in the way that only meant he was going to argue about something. And she didn’t want to argue. Looking back to the ground, she saw it: A clearing large enough in between the trees so that she may land. ”You might want to hold on, because I’m coming in for a landing.” she said warningly to the human on her back as she slowly dove downwards into the clearing.

She never could use her full flying prowess with him on his back, it always made him sick. She even wondered why he became a Candidate in the first place if he felt like this. But they balanced each other out. Too much of one thing can a bad thing, or so he told her. The warning the dragon gave to him was well received, him preparing to make a landing. As they glided through the branches, spiraling downwards, he felt the humidity of this place. ”Now I understand why you didn’t let me change… or bathe. Though the eating I didn’t really understand.” he said, looking at her, a smile on his face.

As she landed, feeling the damp muck that was the floor of the jungle, she shrugged as gently as she could, so that he wouldn’t fall off. ”I really didn’t want you throwing up on me.” she said, a humorous tone in her voice as she walked along, her wings folding slightly. Donn stayed on her back, as he found no reason to get off. Though, he would if she asked him to. But she wasn’t currently, so… in his mind, he could stay on.

The female Rosemary trudged along the muddy path, looking to the left and right a few times, just to make sure that they weren’t being watched. However, she, along with Donn, heard the distant voices, one dragonic and one human. They looked at one another, her turning her head slightly to at least look at him with one eye. ”Want to check it out?” she asked the human, Donn shrugging. ”Go ahead.” he said, smiling slightly. Grinning in satisfaction, she began to try and go faster, to find those who were speaking, mud spraying behind her as she ran along.

Aun attempted to slink her way through the jungle, her brightly colored feathers an obvious give away. Though she stuck out like a sore thumb it was not uncommon to see native fauna that shared bright colorations with her. Crest flattened to her neck and wings clamped to her sides she weaved, pulling herself through foliage and behind trees. Fern leaves slipped over her scales and feathers, droplets running off of her slick body almost like she was covered in oil- that was the good thing about feathers, they had an oily coating that rejected water and as for the rest of her body, waxing at bath time did the trick. However the water felt good in the humidity. She was used to being in the Vein or along the coast- neither of which were hot or humid, and the Plains were dry and windy. This was not an area she and Elodie frequented, though the woman seemed fine.

She watched as her rider wandered in circles around trees, looking them up and down and beneath large leaves for the fungus. Elodie seemed fine, her boots sinking into the soft dark earth and her Turquoise and gold tunic unbuttoned revealing a red chest wrap. She had pulled her hair off of her neck, but aside from these obvious precautions the woman seemed unfazed.

“Aun, could you fly up? Just to the lowest branches and see if perhaps they grow higher? I’m not sure where they’ll be. We are fairly close to the edge of the jungle so I wouldn’t be surprised if we have to go a lot deeper…”Her sentence trailed off as Elodie bent to look at the base of a tree. Complying to her Bonded’s wishes Aun launched herself at a tree, claws and wing talons digging in. Lowering herself she leaped and turned mid-air, catching air beneath her wings albeit awkwardly. Flapping shakily she lifted herself to the lowest branches, actually having to scrabble to pull herself up onto them. The jungle was too closed in and tightly packed by large trees and hanging vines. It put her put of her element. She was small for an Air as anyone could see, hardly bigger than a forest but was just big enough that flight was difficult in this claustrophobic area.

Perching herself, talons curling and digging into the soft woods as she settled onto the branch which was easily able to support her weight. Blinking she cast her gaze around her immediate area, she spied no fungus relating to Elodie’s description. Actually there was hardly more up here than a few snakes and bugs, not even any bird’s nests.

However, on the ground the Air caught quick movement making a Bee line directly for Elodie who was now attempting to look inside of a fallen, decayed tree. Upon closer inspection it was a small dragon and a man atop its back. Quickly judging based on size and body type she decided that the dragon was female though unfamiliar to her. With a twitch of her body she flung herself over the edge of the branch, the force of which caused the branch to snap as she used it to propel herself at the ground.
She landed lightly, her muscles twitching as her crest raised and her wings flared. This was an anfamiar pair in an unfamiliar area that was known to house Tainted after their leader her been caught. Aun was taking no chances.

Upon hearing a thud Elodie pulled herself from the log, a puzzled and worried look crossed her face at Aun’s aggressive stance. It was a rarity for her to act like this and Elodie knew it, sensing tension and anticipation through the bind. However she was sure anyone would have noticed as it was coming off of her partner in waves.

Taking heed of her dragons actions she stepped forward, hand going to her own side pouch and removing her hand spikes. Ready to slip them on quickly if she should need she stood beside Aun looking at her with her brow knit together, “What is it?” her voice was even and terse. It only took a moment for her to calm down and become serious, especially with Aun acting so peculiarly.

“Another pair approaches”

The pair began to slow down, the two of them clearly frustrated and stopped nearby, behind a tree. They clearly haven’t noticed Aun nor Elodie as of yet, and anyone could tell that the dragon was more than a little frustrated. Donn frowned, his arms crossed. ”See anything?” he asked his dragon, her tail swaying from side to side, her feathery down slowly standing on end, her scales shimmering slightly whenever they caught light through the thick canopy. It took a few minutes for the rosemary to answer, ”No…” she said, frowning faintly. He could feel that she was frustrated, and genuinely curious about whatever she had heard. ”Well, look at it this way, Sirona… at least you can get your snails, right?” he asked, trying to make her feel better.

The dragon snorted, annoyed, looking to the human with one eye. ”But… I heard something. And I wanna know what it was.” she said, frowning. He could feel she was frustrated, which was usually a bad thing for them. ”Alright… how about this, I’ll get off of you so you can go find those… things you eat on your own and I’ll stay here. After you’ve had your fill, meet me back here.” said Donn, trying to tempt her with the thought of hunting on her own. The thought of it was quite appetizing to the dragon, moreso than having to carry around her bonded everywhere she went. ”Alright…” she said, stretching one wing out to allow him to get off.

Sighing, Donn got off of his dragon, hitting the damp and muddy floor of the jungle with a squelch. He grimaced as the warm slop seeped into his shoes, trying to make his way to a relatively clean root nearby to sit upon. He waved his dragon goodbye as she ran off. Now he was alone, without anything to protect him against the ravenous predators of this place.

Suddenly Donn felt like a fool. Putting his head in his hands, Donn sighed tiredly. ”Great…” he grumbled, putting his chin on his hand, looking around thoughtfully. Although this place was dark, damp and dangerous, it did have a sort of beauty to it. He let his guard down for a few moments, before he heard something that sounded like rustling. He tensed up, the hairs on his neck standing on end. He looked to the right slowly, his eyes widening. What appeared to be a rather large, and hungry looking snake slowly slithered towards the human, hissing threateningly. Donn gulped, trying to get off of the root and onto the muddy floor below.

He did get onto it, but then, his feet got stuck in the deep, muddy floor. He tried to move, tried to pry his feet from the suction that had caused him to get trapped. He succeeded, but only to remove his shoe. ”Damn it…” he growled under his breath, still struggling to get his other foot out of the mud. The snake was getting closer, its hisses louder as it slowly made its way towards him. Finally, he got it out. And the first thing he did was run. The snake lunged, biting his shoulder, yanking him back. A scream came from the scholar’s mouth as he was dragged back towards the mighty python, struggling and screaming for any possible help.

Sirona could feel pain and panic through the bond that they had, her turning back as she began to run. Her survival instincts kicked in, her downy feathers sticking on end, trying to make her look larger than she really was. As she ran back to the place where Donn was, he was half strangled by the predator. The mighty snake looked to the dragon and hissed, bearing its fangs menacingly, as if to scare off the rosemary. The dragon growled right back at the snake, leaping at it; anger and hatred clear in her eyes.

And all of this was under the watchful gaze of Aun and Elodie.

Tensed in anticipation muscles rippled across Amaunets body, her thighs twitching under the stress. Forehands clenched at the soft earth, eyes darting as she strained to search the underbrush for the figures she had spied in the trees not moments before. Wracking her memory she tried to remember what she had seen. Could she have been wrong? Was it just deer moving quickly or something else? No, the Air was positive that it was a dragon pair she had seen. But still the doubt lingered in her mind, she was always on edge whenever she was out of the Academy. She refused to risk losing Elodie again. Shifting her weight the air raised herself to full height, bracing her weight against a nearby tree with a forehand as she stretched. Nothing.

Beside her Elodie had readied herself, leather gloves slipped on to protect her hand from the heavy, sharp metal of her personalized “brass knuckles”. Not only did they cover her knuckle, they slipped on like a ring and pulled back to her wrist, covering her left hand and wrist like a gauntlet though not as protective as it had sliding plates for maneuverability and fastened again halfway up her forearm for bracing and to ensure it would not slip off. On the other hand was simply a leather glove with steel studs attached down the third knuckle. Not nearly as damaging but still effective.

Glancing at Amaunet she noticed the growing tension and nervousness in her partner. She had not seen nor heard any disturbances in the forest though she trusted Amaunet’s call. And even if it was wrong, better to be safe than sorry, they had dealt with that once before. Making a suctioned sound with her tongue and teeth, she drew Aun to her the dragon curling her neck around Elodie to face her.

“Are you sure you saw something? Should we even be worried? Chances are it’s just a scouting party that saw us and was to check us out. If you’re really worried about it darling, we could always go look for them.”

“I would really rather not….it’s so closed in here I wouldn’t be able to get away should they be hostile…I’m certain I saw a pair. A man and a dragon..I am certain of it.” Her voice wavered, losing its sing-song quality and dropping to a flat whisper.

“Look. If you think you saw something, we should go check it out to at least know. If need be we’ll be able to rough them up enough to get away- we’ve done it before. I say go for it.”

With a curt not from Aun, Elodie advanced through the underbrush keeping her body low and mostly hidden which was almost completely useless with a dragon brighter than the f-ing sun trailing behind her. Giving up on the idea of sneaking she stood and weaved her way through, eyes searching until she saw in the distance what seemed to be a man ’maybe the one Aun saw?’ Stopping in her tracks she turned to face Amaunet, pushing a feeling of questioning through the bond that she hoped Aun would interpret.

As Amaunet’s eyes settled on the man’s figure she let out a soft warbling, crest rising to its full height. Elodie turned back around, ducking behind a tree at the sound Aun let out. Peeking out she looked closer, they were a good 200ft away. They were further in and the trees had grown thicker, the air wetter and the underbrush denser so it was difficult to see if he was accompanied by a dragon, especially if it was up in the branches or dark colors.

With a sigh she pulled herself out and advanced towards the man, making a show of cracking her knuckles and thus showing that she was in fact armed as she approached. With a male of his size she was taking no chances of him thinking she was weak and incapable of fighting. Aun trailed behind, eyes and mouth set hard, crest and tail raised as she eyed the canopy for his bonded launching a surprise attack.

“Hey there stranger” Elodie called as soon as they were within earshot.

Donn really couldn’t reply to Elodie at the moment. His dragon was currently biting and clawing at the face of the snake, it doing the same back to her, and what about him, the rider you must ask? He was currently being flung around wildly, being tossed against the hard wood of some nearby trees, and onto the ground. They could see him moving erratically, and the shadow that appeared to be a tail. The serpent’s tail coiled around his body, trying to squeeze the life out of him. Sporadic gasps came from the rider as he clawed at the tail around his neck with his hands frantically, the panic going through the bond, making his dragon’s attacks become more and more savage as they fought for survival.

He could barely hear the other pair a hundred or so feet away over the loud hissing, growling, and roaring between the mighty serpent and the rosemary. He tried to pry the tail off somewhat, to no avail. The grip this creature had on him was akin to iron. He did start to shout things like ”Gedoffmeyoulil-“ or ”Justkillitalread-eeey!”, giving away that the pair was, without a doubt, in trouble.

And the bite on his arm gave him no more help than a pygmy dragon fighting off a snake that was at least twice her size. The wound began to turn a rather sickly shade of green, foam coming from the wounds as time progressed. His struggling became weaker and weaker, his will flexible. He could barely breathe now, in between the crushing of the serpent’s tail, and the poison flowing through his vains.

It appeared to him, that he was marked for death. And Sirona wouldn’t allow any of that. The snake was a large opponent, which was for sure. It was also very… skilled at fighting of dragons. It clearly had done this repeatedly in the past. It was also slowly besting her. She was covered in scrapes and a few nips, it clawed lightly, bitten here and there. Her sporadic growls and pants became more and more common as she tried to fight off the behemoth of a snake, letting out a few, albeit insignificant, roars, trying to drive it off.

Sirona at this moment wished she had paid more attention to the fighting classes when she was younger; she would’ve probably killed, or at least driven off the snake by now. But no, she was barely doing a thing, and it was getting closer to squishing the life out of Donn – literally.

She leaped at the snake, her teeth sinking into the neck of the creature, biting down hard as the red blood flowed from the mighty creature into her mouth. This enraged the snake, it flinging Donn some distance away towards Amaunet and Elodie, to focus on the dragon biting into its neck. Donn barely felt a thing at this point in time; he could feel that he was being tossed away, towards a vaguely human figure. But he was groggy, tired, and most likely hallucinating due to the poison in his blood, coursing through his veins like no tomorrow. ”Hngrhguh...” he groaned, his body covered in blood and mud, not looking at his best.

He tried his best to point at the fighting dragon and snake, which had tossed the rosemary off of itself, and was now trying to make its way towards the small incapacitated dragon lying in the mud, trembling. The high pitched whines and whimpers coming from the dragon could easily be heard by the air pair, and more importantly, Donn. He could feel the fear and panic through the bond, both of them fearing what would happen next.
