Character Number- First! Name- Merry Sopranosong (this is not his given name; he has long forgotten the name his parents gave him) Sometimes called the Masked Minstrel Age- 28 Gender- Male Sexuality- Not particularly interested in either gender. Appearance- Merry is a minstrel by trade, having made music his entire life. As such he is outfitted in the most flamboyant and colorful of clothing, which changes from day to day. In general, however, he wears some sort of obnoxiously dyed tunic, sometimes patterned with gems or sequins; a long, silken cape that falls from one shoulder; worn, calfskin boots; and a mask, which he never removes. Occasionally he also wears a wide-brimmed hat, but only when he's feeling particularly mysterious. He is never without his trusty cherrywood mandolin, with which he plays the ballads that have made him the master minstrel he is. His crystal is embedded in the neck of the instrument. It is a pale rose, smooth, oblong gem, similar in appearance, texture, and weight to rose quartz. In his pack he always keeps some sort of scroll or parchment and an assortment of quills with which to record his songs. His face (or what is visible of it) is youthful, and betrays his true age. In reality he is around 30 years old, but he looks more like 18. His hair is blond and his skin is generally pale; he keeps most of his body covered under sleeves and tights, but his face is browned from many days of travel. He is slight and slender, standing at about 5'8". Another feature that serves to cloud his identity is his voice. It is high and musical and could belong to a woman, though it could also belong to a young boy. When he sings he has a vast vocal range, from rumbling low notes to warbling highs, but his speaking voice rests in the higher register. Personality- On stage Merry lives up to his name--he is joyful, exuberant, funny, a jokester. He is the ultimate crowd-pleaser, and he takes great pleasure from it. Behind the curtains, however, he takes on a quieter, more sinister persona, preferring to stick to the shadows and trust no one. When confronted he seeks to flee immediately, and when cornered he strikes without question. If you manage to gain Merry’s trust, you’ve earned yourself a loyal friend and a faithful companion. Those closest to Merry know him as one to never run from a fight in their honor, as someone who can always cheer them up and brighten the cloudiest of days. He is almost constantly humming some tune or other, whether it be a song he has already written or one that he’s currently composing. He also has a habit of bursting out into song, especially when he’s working on a new piece. Despite his love of music, however, he hates to hear other people sing. Whether from jealousy or from his highly-tuned ears, he will not stand to let another sing for long. The only creature he tolerates in this way is Alumina; he could listen to her sing all day, if she weren’t so shy. Nothing makes him happier than spending time with Alumina. Rank- Wandering Wingless pair. History- Sometimes, when he was feeling particularly sentimental, Merry caught himself remembering his family. There was his father, an insensitive brute of a man with hands calloused from longs days of work in the fields; his mother, a woman tired from bearing eight children before him and from carrying the load of a family on her back; and his brothers, seven little demons who were his constant tormentors. They mocked his high, girlish voice, his love of flowing, colorful clothes, his singing--everything he loved they attacked. And his parents, they did nothing to stop them; they were preoccupied with nine hungry mouths to feed, and didn’t have time to listen to what one mouth had to say. Merry despised them. He despised them all. But… then there was Emma Lee, his only sister, who was older than him by a full ten years. She had been his only protector from his brothers, as his parents were always too busy to notice the constant teasing and bickering that went on between the children. She had loved and praised the songs he’d made for her; he wrote all his songs for her. She let him try her flowing capes and colorful dresses, even though they were much too big for him. She brought him flowers from the field and taught him how to sing to the birds so they would sing back. She showed him all her hidden places on their farm, the small cave by the stream where she hid her treasures, the hideout she’d made in the branches of their loftiest tree. She was the mother he never could have had. She loved him most of anyone, and he loved her. And then… she went missing. She’d gone to her hidden place at the furthest point of their land, a hollowed out tree at the edge of the forest that bordered their property; she’d gone to be alone, she didn’t even let Merry come along. She never came back, and though the family searched for her, they never found even a hint of her whereabouts. So the search ended, because there were crops to be harvested and preparations to be made for the long winter ahead of them. She was only a girl, after all; she could not carry on the family name. Her sole purpose was to bear sons and make a home. She would never have amounted to anything anyways, and their mother could always bear another child to make up for her. But Merry would never stop looking. Not a month later, at the tender age of eight, he too disappeared from his home in search of his Emma Lee. He is still searching. Then when these melancholy memories would come to his mind, his constant companion, Alumina, would quietly cup a wing around his shoulders and ask him what was wrong, what was he thinking about? This would make Merry smile; he’d met the air dragon not long after he’d left home, and they’d been together ever since, never straying more than a few feet from each other. She would never replace Emma Lee, but the dragon came close. Then he would smile and say nothing, just remembering, and he would pull out his mandolin and begin to strum, and Alumina would lend her high, clear voice, and this would help Merry forget his troubles. Pet(s) None The Dragon Name- Alumina Age- 18 years Gender- Female Element- Air Appearance- Unlike her rider, Alumina is a relatively plain dragon. She is clouded in feathers of the purest soft white; they cover literally every inch of her body, though in some places they are thicker than others. For example, the feathers on her legs and tail are so fine as to be invisible, which gives the impression that those areas are only covered in scales, but upon touching those scales one can feel the slightest whisper of down. The feathers form a crest on her head that extends almost all the way down her neck before merging with the feathers of her wings. She also has feathery crests that grow from her wrists extending up to her elbows. Like most air dragons she has two pairs of wings, one set larger than the other, and a feather fan at the end of her tail that enables her aerial acrobatics. She is slender and long-limbed, though rather small for a dragon: 6 feet tall at the shoulder and 40 feet long from snout to tail. Her eyes are ice blue and very large and expressive. When she is extremely happy her feathers begin to shine like soap bubbles, and color gradually spreads from her crystal (which is found where her head connects to her neck, similar in placement to an Adam’s apple) to her extremities, turning her body all different hues and shades. When she is sad her feathers begin to wilt and turn grey. In times of great tragedy her feathers will turn black and break off; this is rare, however. Personality- Alumina is painfully quiet and shy; generally she only speaks to Merry and will even have him speak for her if she’s too nervous to speak for herself. Once she gets to know someone, however, she can be rather chatty. She is very observant and always has something to say or some sort of insight. She’s known to drift off into daydreams, though, especially when she’s trying to puzzle out a particular problem, which can cause her to miss important details. She loves to sing just as much as Merry, perhaps even more, and her voice is so pure it makes hearts melt. It takes a great amount of trust for her to sing to someone, or a lot of pressure from her rider to make this happen. She sings for Merry all the time; the two of them are constantly singing back and forth to each other when they’re alone. She is very receptive to emotions, and strong emotions can manifest themselves through her in a physical form. For example, if she is among people that are filled with joy, she will begin to shine in the soap-bubble way mentioned earlier, even if she herself is not feeling happy. Looks pretty good to me! There's just a couple of things that I feel like I need to address, but, for the most part, you've done very well! - What shape is their crystal? c: Be sure to denote color/stone type and shape - it can be literally anything. Most of mine are gemstone cuts in diamonds or squares, though we have a few very different ones floating around Sekkai - such as Jasper Rings, Opal stars, Sugilite Rods, and Amber Bacteriophages. Science! - Just for our purposes, I would like you to list his exact age. He may not know this himself, however, and you're welcome to mention that in his history. Most people do remember their dates on Sekkai due to pretty decent record keeping, though mistakes may be made. Same thing for his sex! You are welcome to list him as a gender of his preference, but biological sex would also be appreciated. - In the history, the first sentence implies that looking into the past is in past tense. If this could just be changed to "is" to denote that his current self recalling his history, that would be great! - Within the history itself, I would appreciate it if you could expand upon how he came to bond to Alumina and from that point to the current time. Some prompt questions such as these may help! Where did he go when he ran away from home to look for his sister? Did he meet anyone life-changing? Did he do anything in particular to track her down (to no avail?)? What made him want to be a rider? How did he come to the Academy and, along that line, how did he react to bonding to his dragon? Was it unintentional? For reference, bonding occurs when Kazuko gives them a crystal at the Academy's annual Hatching. A dragonet will meet their soulmate at birth, instinctively knowing who to go for upon the sands. How did their personalities mesh in the first few months and years? Wyrmling training is the first year of life as riders. How did they fare through it? - In regards to Alumina, Airs typically do not have transparent or semi-transparent feathers. They can be very thin and pale, but not translucent. Likewise, Air dragons cannot change the color of their feathers at will. Molting may occur to show seasonal and maturation displays (like Mallard ducks, the males have an immature moult to gain their characteristic colors and molt again when not in the breeding season to look like females). An overall sheen to her feathers and scales (or characterized to a particular portion of her body, such as the back or underbelly - whatever your preference is), however, is fine, so long as there is some gradient with some off-white colors (maybe a soft grey or pale blue/yellow) is present. We're generally hesitant to accept pure white animals because, unless they have a specific genetic condition, which are usually held to staff-created hatchlings/special circumstances, white animals are not entirely bleached of color. |
