“Do you mind? I’m trying to be bored in peace here,” Mirhira grumbled as the plume of dust from Jericho’s scraping at the limestone cliff-face settled over her. She waved the dust out of her face and glared at her dragon, who had seemingly ignored her in favor of snapping up the huge boulders of white, chalky rock and grinding them on his rear molars. Jericho needed a lot of mineral sustenance to maintain his craggy armor and glittering quartz spines and spikes. The quarry where doubtless many Earth’s came to sustain their breed’s key features was only a few miles away from the Academy, but they were the only ones there that early winter morning. It wasn’t stifling hot, but it wasn’t chilly either. Rather, in the sub-tropics of Nyushi, it was balmy and comfortable if not a little humid.

“You didn’t have to come you know,” Jericho rumbled as he swallowed a generous mouthful of the calcified rock. “I told you you could stay and cause trouble for me,” he rumbled deeply, a laugh.

“I’m about to go crazy and you know it,” Mirhira pointed a finger at him. “I haven’t heard anything about deployment yet,” she complained. They’d been stuck at the Academy essentially since the war ended. “The most interesting thing we’ve done in the last six months was set that tavern on fire--,”

You set that tavern on fire, if you recall. I was innocent in that matter, making a few Lady Airs’ night worthwhile,” he interrupted, glancing at his rider with one blue-green eye. He turned his head, the massive crest rising above his brow reflecting the light of the near midday sun in Mirhira’s direction so strongly that she had to shield her eyes from the onslaught. “You think you’re having problems, I’m running out of stories to tell, and you know how many of them we have.” Jericho sounded legitimately worried at that remark.

“Technically,” she began as she dug around in her pack and pulled out a stick of jerky to chew on while she waited for Jericho to finish his chewing, “It was that kid that started the fire,” she shrugged innocently, “The candidate. I just didn’t leave when I saw it happening.” Which was the truth, but she’d been far too amused and the situation hadn’t become dangerous yet at the time. She’d gotten out and made sure everyone else had afterward before anyone got hurt, but it had proved altogether to be an entertaining night.

Jericho was silent for a moment as his jaws worked at a few more boulders, “Don’t worry, I’m sure something interesting will happen soon. Rarely does it ever miss us for long,” he chuckled, his amusement vibrating the ground. “Besides, I’ve got a feeling in my gut.”

“I bet its all those rocks you’re eating giving you gas. You can sleep outside tonight,” Mirhira smirked, then scanned the expanse of the empty quarry. Good place to hang out today if you wanted to be alone. Unfortunately Mirhira wasn’t the type to really like solitude much. She liked to be around some kind of hustle and bustle…silence was always too deafening for her.

((I couldn’t remember who you wanted to throw at them Silver, I apologize, but whoever you want you can just send them on a stroll to the quarry or something xD WHATEVER WORKS))

While most would be bored with a life of lazing around, or doing seemingly nothing, Nikki was completely the opposite. She was either hoarding something, or creating something, and whether it included the large Lava or not, never bothered the pair of them. The two of them still had yet to really decide what they were going to do, now that they were officially graduated. Mafic entertained the thought of joining a wing; but then there were also days that he just wanted to laze around in his nest. When Nikki did want him to do something, sometimes it took more poking and prodding from the young girl than normal. Somehow Becoming a dragon-rider hadn’t stopped or hindered the girl from continuing on her pursuit of wanting to create things. Sometimes, the large Lava would wonder if she even thought of herself as a dragonrider. So far, she just handled herself, as well. Herself.

But even the Lethargic Lava dragon could get bored staring at the same scenery of either the town, the parade grounds, or wherever they happened to go for the day. They were far from isolationists, but Mafic Idly wondered if Nikki felt left behind as classmates joined wings or settled down for other pursuits. He would have to bring this up, eventually but for now, he stood and stretched his massive, craggy body. Yawning, the Lava dragon slowly unfurled from his nest. It wasn’t much of a change moving into their own quarters, more towards the ground than up high, but There was much more room for Mafic and all of Nikki’s stuff. Already they’re living room was slowly becoming filled with shelves and book shelves and drawers to house the various things Nikki collected and used and created.

At least, Mafic mused as he rose to go see what she was up to, she kept everything organized, and somewhat neat. And kept things that were easily flammable tucked away from his nest of embers.

“Nikki, m’dear?” his voice rumbled out, as he stood in front of her door to her bedroom. Not the the girl actually used the bedroom as a bedroom. She had pulled out the mattress and promptly set up near his nest. They were so used to sleeping next to each other, that sleeping in adjoining rooms had been a foreign concept to the lava rider.

“Mmmm” A voice hummed back from the other room. too soon she peeked her head out, a rather..lumpy mess of material adjourning her head and almost covering her eyes. Whatever it was, It was supposed to be a hat… of sorts?

“M’dear, Why don’t we go out and get some fresh air. Stretch our limbs. Perhaps we will meet a new friend?” He rumbled quietly eyes flickering to the daringly pink mop of a hat on her head. “And..may I inquire as to what that is on your head?”

Nikki blinked at him, having forgotten the large, horrifying bonnet like thing on her head. Several seconds past of them staring at each other before Nikki blinked. “OH! This! Uhm. Yeah.” Pulling the disgraceful thing off her head before looking at it. “It’s supposed to be...a uh Bonnet! But uh..>” She turned it around to show the myriad of flaws that made it look….well, like what it was. “But, I uh, think I got my patterns mixed up…..Maybe if I tried smaller ones first?” She trailed off, completely having forgotten his first question.

“I’m sure, you’ll figure it out, but why don’t we just take a break?” Mafic nudged her gently with a paw towards the saddle. She was already dressed for the day, he noted, might as well take advantage of that.

“Um. yeah sure?” She tossed the offending garment back into her room before she shook her head. “Where are we going?”

“Somewhere New, I think.” The process of getting saddled and properly situated took no effort at all, and While she might not really notice the changes happening, Mafic could tell how much stronger the Lava rider was becoming. Once she was settled and properly strapped in between his shoulders, Mafic managed to leap from the entrance of their home. It was a struggle to get up, but Mafic handled it gracefully, his massive massive wings powerfully pushing him upwards where he knew better thermals would be able to hold his massive weight.

The colder air didn’t seem to bother the Lava rider, as they headed higher in the atmosphere. Even if she was properly dressed, the heat that Mafic radiated from his inner core did most of the work for the clothing. Looking down at the passing grounds, Mafic didn’t really see anything or anyone out and about. And besides, he had lazed enough around the lake gardens, that Nikki would probably just end up going back to the academy without him. But, now that they were graduated, they were able to go to different places, to travel. And while Mafic didn’t plan on traveling too far for the pair of them, a change was in order.

So, Nikki was quite surprised when she suddenly peered down as they began to get lower and lower
to find a large quarry beneath them. There were some riders and their dragons below them, but Nikki was curious. “What’s going on here?”

“I have no idea, but It is someplace new, I think. Perhaps we can find something of use here? Or perhaps a new friend.” Mafic rumbled, Honestly there was no real reason as of yet why he had chosen this place specifically, but he had heard of it, and wanted to come and check it out.

His landing was as graceful as the Lava could make it, but he did his best not to disturb the earthen pair near by with skidding now slightly heated rocks. He shook his wings before folding them neatly on his side. His molten eyes turned to look at the earth not too terribly far. He was larger than Mafic, by far, but Mafic was a decent size as well. Nikki, however, just felt even more smaller than she already is.

Nikki watched the Earth with rapid attention, as he was literally eating the earth. Curiosity burned through her. Why was he eating dirt? The cafeteria held plenty of food for them, and there were cattle and sheep and things like that provided!

Raptly she was out of her saddle and then sliding with ease down Mafic’s shoulder and arm, without much warning to the lava. Her landing wasn’t as graceful as she would have like, almost landing face first into the hard rock before her but she managed to catch herself. With a determined glean to her eye, she walked up to the large triceratops earth. Some might have been intimidated by the earth, Nikki was not, granted he was larger than she was used too, but that didn’t stop her from walking as close as she could and with wide eyes, watched the Earth.

“EXCUSE ME SIR” She called up to the large earth. Nikki could be determined when she wanted to be, and Mafic followed. When she felt she had his attention (she was so puny! Why couldn’t she just have like, Large shoes or something that would make her at least as tall as that?) she waved up at the large earth. “Hello there! It’s a fine day to be uhhhh, eating rocks!” she suddenly realized that she had just gone up to a complete stranger only to ask why he was doing so when the answer was probably quite obvious.

But, then Nikki had never been the type to notice the obvious when she wasn’t paying attention. Some might have thought her slow or daft, but in reality, she just wasn’t applying herself. Now if they saw her in her element, in her passion--then they might be think otherwise.

“But, uh, I have a question for you! Why are you eating rocks?”

Mafic sighed, shaking his head at his rider. If Mafic was the type to get highly embarrassed, he would have face-palmed, excused himself and his rider, and left. However, Mafic was more inclined to let Nikki ask the questions and let her be herself. She certainly loved to be an individual and first impressions were never her forte, depending. He would have to give the young tailor an a for trying.

“M’dear. Shouldn’t you introduce yourself first?” He rumbled at the Girl. Sometimes her manners were forgotten, and Mafic would have to remind her. Turning his attention to the larger earth, he bowed his head.

“Greetings, Kind sir. But my name is Mafic, and this here, Is Nikki.” He nodded. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” The Lava definitely had a southern like drawl to his speech, but it made him seem even more open and inviting than his tank like appearance. Not that Mafic couldn’t be a fighter when he needed to be, he just didn’t have the inclination to be a brawler, much liking to befriend others than anything. “We didn’t mean to interrupt you, or yours.”

“But yes. Um. OH! Are there like, any raw uhhh crystals or anything out here?” true to Nikki’s nature, her mind strayed from her original question to the next, her eyes suddenly overlooking the large quarry. It was an impressive site, and Nikki wondered if there was anything worth looking for in such a large mound of rocks and dirt and dust. She definitely wasn’t minding getting herself dirty.

Mafic shook his head, watching his seemingly flighty rider do what she did best. Flit around without much care in the world. But, she was paying attention to the large earth that she had gone and interrupted the large earth. Mafic just hoped that he wasn’t irritated or angry at the young easily distractible girl.

Jericho had just lifted a foot to scrape another cascade of rocks from the earthen wall when the sound of wingbeats and a landing dragon distracted him. He glanced to see a Lava land in the quarry that he didn’t recognize. He only found it briefly odd that a Lava would come here, but it wasn’t interesting enough to warrant him stopping for longer than it took to pick up a couple more boulders in his beak-like muzzle and chew. Likely they were just minding their own business. Then a small voice reached his ears, and he glanced down to see a small human—well all humans were small to him—shouting up at him a query. She was interrupted momentarily by her dragon, who introduced them as Nikki and Mafic. That was familiar, one of the newly graduated wyrmlings perhaps? Jericho and Mirhira had only been at the Academy semi-permanently following the end of the war, but it was long enough to remember some of the names.

“Greetings young’n’s,” Jericho turned his huge head to look at them and greet them in kind. Mirhira, he felt, took a sudden interest and stood up from her sitting place to brush off her pants of limestone dust. Stepping easily off of the raised, tiny plateau, the Earth rider crossed Jericho’s back to see what was so interesting. She used the spires on his back for balance and peeked over the side to see the Lava and his rider.

Without even thinking, Mirhira shouted down from Jericho’s back, “Limestone,” she corrected. Jericho couldn’t just go around eating any kind of rock to get what he needed to supplement his scales. Grabbing one of the ropes attached to one of the huge spires jutting out of his shoulder, Mirhira rappelled down to Nikki’s level, “Think of it as a vitamin. Bones of everything else he eats don’t provide enough calcium and other minerals to maintain this thick hide,” she explained.

“Not the tastiest supplement, but it does the job,” Jericho rumbled in addition. “I am Jericho.”

“And Mirhira,” she saluted lazily, “Pleasure’s ours,” she looked up at Mafic and gave an appreciative whistle. “Handsome fine beast you’ve got there,” she complimented. Mirhira was always a fan of the big, bulky, mountainous dragons. It might have been a personal bias being bonded to an Earth easily three quarters the size of a Bulkhead for near half a century,

At the girls added question, Jericho nodded and turned, “Sometimes,” he answered to the inquiry about raw crystals.

“Usually just little things. Quartz, malachite, sometimes jasper or chalcedony. I’ve never found anything significant out here though,” Mirhira shrugged, “Don’t worry you’re not interrupting,” she added with a small smirk. “There’s little else to do around here.” She kicked a pebble just to see how far it would bounce across the pounded flat area where she stood. It bouced off of another rock a few feet away then settled out of site somewhere.

“Not like those days when we used to pound a few Taints before breakfast eh ‘Hira?” Jericho rumbled again, the sound vibrating the ground and making the little pebbles bounce around slightly on the surface.

“Certainly not,” Mirhira agreed, then took better stock of their visitors, “You two recently graduated?” They had that young look about them that might suggest so, but she wanted to confirm her suspicions.

Nikki looked up when someone yelled down at her. LImestone huh? She listened to the explanation, before she nodded. “Oh! I see. That makes sense. Keeps everything nice and strong.” She nodded. Before turning and looking at Mafic. “Oh. Um. Yes. Uh. Thank you! You have a marvelous partner as well.” She gazed up at Jericho. Mafic was large, but Jericho was still larger than her own dragon by far. Nikki had never really thought about the sizes of dragons before, nor really cared. Mafic was large, yes. But Mafic was hers.

Mafic tipped his head, and smiled. “Thank you as well.” Mafic was well aware of his size and bulk, but he didn’t flount it around like some dragons. Not that Jericho did either. It was just the way of things he supposed.

Nikki seemed slighlty disappointed that there wasn’t really much to be found in the way of stones, but she shrugged it off. “Ah well.”

“We are.” Mafic replied as Nikki continued to observe the large earth, the gears in her mind turning. “We are still thinking on what we want to do now that we have graduated.” He chuckled, softly. Not that Mafic was in any hurry to decide right away. Nikki seemed more than content to continue on, and if Mafic really wanted to do something like join a wing, Nikki would probably go along with him. She could be easily swayed when she hadn’t made up her own mind. Or didn’t have any plans to do so.

“You guys fought in the war?” Nikki suddenly piped up, having caught up with what the large earth dragon had said. “I mean, um. You did mention beating up taints…” Nikki suddenly stammered, realizing that could be a touchy topic and she tried not to offend anyone. Sometimes she didn’t think before she spoke and it could get her into trouble. Mafic’s patience with her helped, and sometimes he managed to keep her from blurting out, and or talk their way out. She hoped they didn’t snap at her--Serluinn would definitely if he thought she had spoken out of line.

“Well, there’s certainly plenty to choose from with the war over and all that. More time to pursue things like…studying,” Mirhira made a face, making it somewhat clear that she wasn’t one for the books herself. “Or science, scouting, whatever. There’s still a few problem taints out there, but they’re nothing without their master, that’s for sure,” she nodded, taking a seat upon one of those massive flattened talons of Jericho’s. She was bored with the way things were now, but that didn’t mean a young, newly graduated pair were. She and her dragon had been immersed in the crucible of warfare since the very beginning of it. It was difficult to remember what they even did before they were drafted into service, what they did to pass the time in the twenty some odd years before the Great War even started.

Jericho laughed, “Of course! Since the very beginning. Might be surprised we survived the whole thing eh? Well, it wasn’t all that hard. Flies to be swatted at those Taints, even the big ones,” he said, shrugging off the true severity of the war. Jericho had a way of compartmentalizing the horrors of the deaths and massacres he and his rider had been once privy to on a daily basis. He covered it up in grandiose visions of glory and strength, his way of dealing with having to murder his own kind in order to protect himself, his rider, and everything he loved. It was endearing to Mirhira, who grinned in spite of her own memories. She delighted in causing as much havoc as her Earth, but it was also that havoc that sometimes kept her up at night thinking about whether or not she’d really done the right thing, then convincing herself that of course she had, because if she hadn’t there’d be a lot of dead Sekkaians. Their family and friends.

“Careful you’ll get him re-living the glory days again,” the Earth rider chuckled warmly. “I guess that’s not a bad thing if you have all day, but he’ll talk your ears off I’m warning you.”

“Come now ‘Hira, the young’n’s of this generation should know these things. Why, we would not be free and at peace now if it weren’t for the hundreds and thousands of us that helped finally bring down that Nightmare. Ah I bet that was a battle of epic proportions,” the Earth said wistfully to no one in particular. He had not been present at the moment the current Shadowguarde took down Nidhogg, but he wished he had. Instead he’d been outside trying to trap the patchwork titan of dead flesh so it was unable to move and the strike team could do their jobs. He then turned back to the young Lava pair, “Surely you wish to do something awesome with your lives, perhaps we can help if ever you seek to join a wing or whatnot.” So quickly did the Earth warm up to strangers.

Mafic nodded, as Nikki picked at her clothing randomly. She didn't know what she wanted to do really, but Mafic seemed to have ideas. They discussed them at random, but Nikki couldn't seem to make up her mind completely. That or something would distract her. She seemed to impulsively switch around and while occasionally Mafic didn't mind, the Lava would like to get their lives sorted out properly.

"I am impressed, I have to say. I know nothing of the war, thanks to the valiant efforts of those like you who have fought in the war, but I am glad that it is over." Mafic rumbled, "I do not think my rider is really cut out for war." He glanced at her as she blinked up suddenly as she realized that they had been talking to her about something.

"I am glad that the war is over, as well. I saw what it did to my uncle and his rider and i don't know if I could handle that. I suppose I could if I had too....." Nikki mumbled, not liking to think that she couldn't be a proper soldier. She could, she didn't want to though. "I just want to help people. That Much I know...."

"nothing wrong with wanting to help people, M'dear." He chuckled. "I would not mind listening, however to some stories. These things should be told so that it is not forgotten. So hopefully mistakes won't be made again. We have nothing but time."

"Are you guys in a wing?" Nikki piped up, when they mentioned offering existence. "Is it hard?" She shuffled her feet again, feeling foolish. She couldn't imagine life without Mafic, but she didn't know if she really wanted to be a soldier soldier. And she wasn't cut out to be a healer. She couldn't handle seeing so much sickness and pain. She would rather prevent it. and make clothes.
