Mavryk’s world was one of earthen spice, leaning close to the neck of the horse he had borrowed he could make out both heart and hoof beat; the rhythmic nature of both adding to the sense of timelessness that had taken over the lad as he had followed the River out of Lihn towards the Well. Sure enough he had no intentions of going that far today, but there was plenty of jungle to explore between here and there and as the stallion beneath him thundered away at a gallop he listened for the faint slowing of stride that would indicate when the horse had had enough, for now though the two were simply free spirits between earth and sky. Winter had made the world colder but there was a shift in the atmosphere and Mavryk settled deeper into the saddle, slowing his mount with the unspoken request; water… he could feel it in the air, but it wasn’t raining. Still moving at a walk now two came along a sharp bend in the river before it twisted back on itself. Here it had made a small pond which flowed towards Nyushi; encouraged by a sharp drop from a waterfall coming from the direction of Hellman’s well. Such an oddly tranquil spot it was odd that no one had mentioned it before. Deepening his seat a touch Mavryk brought his horse to a half-halt and dismounted reins in hand to lead the stallion to the edge of the river. Sure enough as the saying went you could lead a horse to water but not make it drink the equine was not in the least be interested in the river itself but rather the rich greenery which flanked its sides. As the horse snapped at the sugar rich grass Mavryk reached over and took the bridle off, hanging it from one of the stirrups; it would make the prospect of grazing easier and he wouldn’t have to try and wash the bit later. Besides, with this much food around its not like the horse was going anywhere in a hurry; in fact if anything was to be rush it was going to see how much grass the stallion could down before the would be boy would take him back to the Academy. Dropping the girth a few holes for comfort the lad turned his attention to the pool in front of him, considering the two of them were alone there was no harm in taking a good old fashioned dip. Mischief gleamed in his eyes as shirt, pants, shoes and everything else was ditched onto a nearby tree branch; leaving the naked lad to wade waist deep into the water. Considering the season the water was kept warm by the running movement from the waterfall and if Mavryk had to guess there might have well been hot springs nearby. Either way it was hardy an icy slap in the face, more like bath water and cupping his hands together the lad bent and dosed his hair with a good double handful of water, ranking his fingers through to dislodge a good portion of the dust that had gathered from his ride. As his stance straightened, letting the water run down his back those trouble seeking eyes off his took a long steady glance at the cliff face that hugged the waterfall and accompanying pool. Most people wouldn’t have thought might more than that about it, but there was a significant grin on the lad’s face as he considered the climb-ability of the ledge in question. It was certainly flat enough and sharp enough to prove to be a challenge. Risha would have a fit if she was here and caught sight of her brother’s idea as it was forming. Wadding out of the water again Mavryk rummaged through one of the saddlebags, completely unnoticed by the stallion and fished out a length of fabric that would well serve as a blindfold. Fastening it around his eyes he waded back out into the water, using his hearing to locate the waterfall itself. One hand ran along the water slicked surface to find a suitable hold which he tested a second by leaning his weight on it before hosting himself up to it. Feet followed hands, one hold after the other, weaving back and forth between the waterfall and the rock face; using the feeling of the spray to his left side to guide his assent forwards. His right hand tightened over the second step of rocks as he brought his feet around to stand behind his hands and stood up slowly – well it should have been slower as he wavered dangerously on the fragment of rock he had chosen as his foot hold, small pieces of it even breaking off and scattering into the lake’s water. One of his hands flailed wildly as it looked for something to brace against and found the stone wall again. His palm grazing across it; causing Mavryk to hiss a little as a small smear of blood was left behind on the supposedly un-climbable face. Despite being blindfolded the lad soon set up something of a rhythm, between searching and climbing his way up the stone face. A few more gazes and niches were gained on the way, one near his right elbow and another down his left shin. Nothing that was slowing him down though and nothing like the visible lump in his anterior upper left thigh. For some reason it seemed like a ridiculously short climb to the top of the water buffed cliff and on finding his hands on would might be considered more solid ground Mavryk took a second to check his balance before shifting his weight down and through his shoulders to anchor him. Instead of just pulling himself over as a normal person might he managed a great level of control and balance that had enabled him to swing his legs up over his head and was in the process of performing a handstand on top of the cliff. one would have been able to see it but a wide grin crossed his face again and keeping his precarious balance on his hands – the right of which was starting to sting from the cut – Mavryk ‘walked’ to the edge of the cliff; right over the pool. His back arched in a classic vaulting move from his turns of trick riding on horses… As his back bent towards the water he pushed off from the cliff edge and launched himself though the air. The top part of his dive could have done with some work no doubt – but the lad was blindfolded and in the middle of proving the fact that nothing… absolutely nothing… scared him. He hit the water with a noticeable crack and came up with his hair dipping and the blindfold hanging haphazardly around his neck. His laughter echoed around the jungle clearing. “That… was… amazing…” |

((Timeline wise this matches up with right before Yorek got into the Academy)) ~~~~ “You’re certain?” Blair asked for the hundredth time likely. Yorek had to stop her mid stride and take her hand. “I am. I need to at least see for myself. Like you said, if my destiny is not here, I will not bond. Plus I need to experience all I can. And you know I have you to thank for that” he smiled and hugged her again. Blair of course hugged him back tightly. “ I know dear, I just worry so much! What if you are pitted against us?” “I would not harm you. Ever. If the Academy expects me to do such a thing, I will leave them” “Oh? What of your dragon if you bond?” To this Yorek had no real answer. He had seen first hand the difficulties the Trio had with their own dragons and had heard how it had been even harder when they hatched. He could only imagine the tree of them if they met a difficult Sekkaian dragon. All Yorek could do was smile at the girl who had brought him his brother and his freedom. “Blair, I promise you, nothing can come between me and my family. Which includes you…and Byrn as well of course” At this Blair chuckled. As always Byrn had been standoffish with the newcomer, but Yorek hardly took it personally. He even found it charming when Blair gave him death glares when he was less than friendly. He had to admit he envied them for being able to grow up together…even if it was rough and developed into a bond beyond what most siblings would deem acceptable. But of course it did not really bother Yorek. And now he trudged with Blair on a test run to decide on a path to get him to the Academy. Though he worried, he could tell Blair HATED being away from her dragon and her boys. Krakatoa likewise hated it and of course let Yorek know again and again that Blair was his his HIS. He found this charming as well. But even now he knew the huge dragon was furious at having to stay put and hidden (well as hidden as he could) “We’re approaching the river. We’ll gather some water as well. There’s even a Waterfall if you want to take a bath” Blair said. For once there was no hint at sexuality. She would not look at Yorek sexually as she did Byrn and Bolrock. Not unless the boys wanted her to anyhow. Hell, he WAS hot. But of course he was! He was Bolrock’s brother! All the same, when she heard the water ahead she was content to go have a rest if Yorek chose to wash up. But a sudden splash sound put her on high alert. “What was that?” Yorek asked to nobody in particular. Blair signaled him to be silent a moment before signaling to Aiyana on her shoulder. Without a heartbeat hesitation the green phoenix lifted off her bonded and swiftly flew towards the waterfall. But even then Blair could hear laughter. She hunkered down into stalking mode. She was not hungry, but she wanted to see who was here. Aiyana gave a call indicating safety but also to summon Blair. Yorek watched curious. He stayed put waiting for Blair to indicate all was well. He just prayed she would not eat whoever it was laughing. Indeed Blair edged closer to the water’s edge staying hidden but she listened and sniffed. There was a scent that Blair could not get over. It was so familiar in an odd way. It brought back memories of the hatching… She slowly peeked over the rocks she was behind to look at the youth in the water. Oh bloody hell he was nude, Blair tried to ignore that fact and look at his face. When she did get a good look, she gasped. “You!” She hopped up upon the boulder on the river bank “You! I remember you! You helped my little cub!” A smile spread across her face. This was one who she would always protect for what he had done. Aiyana gave a happy trill at Blair’s new joy and Yorek read it loud and clear as he finally approached as well. |

Dripping wet all over now Mavryk needed to push his hair back out of his face a few times, in a vain attempt to stop the water running into his eyes, but it would not be tamed for long and ended up like he might have had a better time taming a tangle of seaweed. Well, it was out of the way, until it flopped down again and the candidate forced it back up; it was clearly not a fight he was going to win. Even so he seemed content enough to leave it be, it was just hair after all and if it got really annoying there was bound to be something in his saddle bag that he could cut it off with. Which would only add to his usual haphazard look; but life was all about fun, the so called good looks that Mavryk had were just a bonus. Unlike his horse who snorted and sidestepped at the sign of an intrusion the candidate in question hadn’t noticed the fact that there were others closing on his position. In fact due to his daredevil like nature the young teen wasn’t likely to care if he had noticed. At the sound of someone breaking the silence with what could have been a surprised accusation he turned around, completely forgetting the fact he was naked; with no one choosing to draw attention to the fact it was easily done. In all honesty he was just as surprised as the woman who had clambered up on the bolder by the lake side. He found himself staring a little, a move which could have been dangerous for anyone else, but given the fact she had caught him off guard he was staring more at her face, despite his reputation for being a bit of a player, just for the challenge of it to say the very least. There was something about this woman’s face that captivated him for a long moment, something familiar, a nagging; for someone who was incapable of forgetting things he saw and read he was truly struggling with placing her. Well that was only part of it, some of the awareness seemed to come from the fact that the memory of her seemed so jarring in this place as if she didn’t belong, and before he could come to grips with why she provided him with a answer in one of the most unlikely of ways; declaring out loud that she recognised him, which caused Mavryk’s brow to knit a moment as he had not yet placed her. Although his confusion was replaced with recognition and surprise when she used the word cub, and her face became a distantly familiar smile. In that moment everything came together, the last time he had seen that smile it had been deeply buried in worry and pain; on the face of a woman who had bonded to a hellfire of a dragon in a place that couldn’t be any more opposite to the Academy if it tried. His eyes darted away from her for a moment, looking for the Bulkhead that was bound to be towering over the tress by now, and drifted back to the rider in question, as to where her dragon was. He didn’t get to voice the question though as a phoenix and then another person, this one a male joined them from out of the shrubbery. Mavryk found his own face settling into s smile, despite the extra company as he looked at the woman whose name he had only caught once, Blair if memory served; and it had done little to fail him in the past. As the name came back as did her use of the word cub and the explanation that came with it; the cub in question had been at the Tainted hatching too, stabbed by one of the other candidates and the healer in Mavryk had taken over to help the lad before he bleed out. At the time though he had not known Blair and the mother bear relationship she had with the wounded boy as well as several others from the feeling he got. “Mavryk,” came the answer and introduction has it had long since been forgotten in the murks; and now his manners would not let it be over looked again; even if his curiosity was gnawing him at a little. He wanted to say it was good to see her again, but was not sure how it would be taken given everything that had gone wrong and could have gone wrong at that time and place. So he settled with something was a little more ballpark. Using the words she had herself had supplied so as not to seem so intrusive. Having left the murks shortly after the hatching himself he had no idea what had happened to his would be patient and was worried the youngster to say the least. “Keeping safe? And your cub?” |
