Character Number- First! Name- Lumine Nox Age- 19 Gender- You can call them anything you like. Sexuality- They don’t even really know. Appearance- Lumine is particularly short of stature, though their frequent slouching does nothing to help that. They’ve retained the soft roundness of their youth throughout adolescence, so they’re typically estimated to be sixteen at the oldest. Their hair is dark russet in colour, coarse and amateurly cut into haphazard layers. They’re not particularly proud of their haircutting skills, so they hide their mess of hair underneath a snugly fitting cap, made with the winter pelts of Vidalaner rabbits. Their eyes are bright and caramel in colour underneath the thick curtain of their bangs, with deep, almost violet eyebags for want of sleep. Across their face is a dense smattering of freckles, and were it not for their sickly pallor, they wouldn’t be visible at all. Their wardrobe consists entirely of neutral earthy colours, not out of preference, but simply due to availability. Fabrics and furs of those shades are less expensive and easier to get a hold of than those of the vibrant colours found in Lihn. They dress primarily in a utilitarian fashion - anything to stay warm - though they have added embellishments where they’re able; fur cuffs here, complex embroidery and beading there. Lumine doesn’t have the resources to be noticeably ornate, but even the smallest bit of detailing is enough to satisfy them. As for instruments they regularly carry around with them, they don’t really have much in the way of weapons, though they do have a wooden embroidery hoop with metal pins and a needle or two stuck into the cloth. Metal is hard to come by with the war effort, especially something so small and delicate, so they treat their tools with the utmost care. They also have a leather pouch at their waist containing a pair of knives for cutting through fabric, a whetstone, and a spool of expensive thread their dad brought back for them from the capital. Lumine prefers using the best quality tools and materials they can, though they do also have a few strands of sinew and handmade bone needles squirreled away, should the worst happen. Personality- Lumine’s family is rather large, to put it lightly - with so many other people around, it’s difficult to be heard. That, combined with the hearing loss they’ve sustained over so many years of raucous family gatherings, contributes to their timidity. Being spoken over by other people, with better ideas than yours, has a tendency to make any desire to contribute virtually nonexistent. They keep to themselves and don’t speak unless specifically prompted to, though even then, there’s a lingering anxiety. The only language they’ve been exposed to is that of their mother’s tribe and occasionally Vidalaner, though they listen closely whenever their twin, Kastelle, has something to say, as she liberally sprinkles her sentences with words from foreign languages. Most recently, they’ve asked her to help them learn the Nyushi common tongue. Lumine’s catching on, but they’re not entirely confident with speaking it yet, as she laughs at them every time they mispronounce something. Unlike their siblings and much of their family, they didn’t inherit much in the way of stamina, and so they often struggle with manual labour of any variety. This is a sore spot for them, and as such, they tend to overexert themselves when faced with any sort of physical challenge. They’re utterly determined to improve themselves, and they’re planning on doing this by going above and beyond any feat they’ve attempted (and failed at) by joining the Sekkain militia and bonding with a dragon. (Because when your family lives with giant, scary wolves, it takes a flying monstrosity the size of a castle to be impressive.) However, their family is convinced that, with their penchant for reading and textiling, they’ll just end up a merchant in Lihn. Rank- Dragon Candidate. History- Lumine hails from a small border town in the south of Vidalaner, and considering the ongoing war with the Tainted, their life has been almost peaceful and uneventful. However, decades ago, their mother’s family lived in the northern plains of Loth Angresan, a small but close knit tribe scraping out bleak, bloody and often short lives for themselves. Though turf wars and skirmishes over resources would occasionally claim the lives of their family members, it was to be expected. More of their family would have been lost, if not for the company of dire wolves, their companions and salvation. Though many rival tribes considered the wolves pests - a blight on their herds of livestock - Lumine’s tribe consisted of hunter gatherers who saw their rivals’ pursuits as shameful; an insult to their religious beliefs. Their livestock was what sustained them, they treated their animals with kindness and respect, only to later betray them for want of sustenance. Their people had always been nomadic, and rather than caring for herds of their own food animals, they found that following the packs of dire wolves to find a source of food had never failed them. Where the herds of lumbering, grazing herbivores went, the dire wolves followed, and so too did their tribe. The wolves had taken on a deific status over centuries, their intelligence and adept hunting skills were legendary, and the tribe revered them as gods. Of every kill they made, they left only the best behind for their god wolves. Decades of peaceful cohabitation followed before one of the tribe was courageous enough to attempt making contact with the dire wolves, and although she sustained a few bites, it was considered enough of a success to inspire thoughts of domesticating the wolves, and truly living alongside them. And life was pretty alright. That was, until the Tainted unleashed all hell on the people of Loth Angresan. Where tribes of Westlanders once clashed with one another in what felt like a strange, violent sense of camaraderie, the Tainted forces swooped in and crushed the divided peoples of the Westlands with practiced ease. No one had seen it coming, and though there were rumours of Sekkains heading west to colonize what had been considered no man’s land for years, none of the tribes had been prepared for the destruction that rained down on them. Even Lumine’s tribe was taken aback, though years of packing up and leaving on a moment’s notice was all they needed to reduce casualties. Many lives were lost, but there was no time to mourn their dead as the winged monsters of death trailed closely behind them. Weeks of running as fast as their feet could carry them with the weight of an entire tribe on their shoulders was enough to kill many of the dire wolves from sheer exhaustion, though their strife was not in vain. Bedraggled and barely alive, the tribe took refuge in Vien, and although the natives weren’t the most amicable of people, they were able to survive the Taint onslaught. Unfortunately though, these were lands with different customs and means of survival. Chasing after herd animals for food was hardly an option here, in a land so densely populated and bereft of wildlife. Making use of the only skills they had, their grandparents established a dire wolf kennel to break even, after years of fruitlessly struggling with mercantilism. With the growing need for capable warriors to combat the Tainted, there too arose a growing need for dires to fight with them, as dragons were scarce in those days. Lumine was born years later to a Vidalaner merchant and their Westlander mother, in a too small cabin filled to the brim with family and dire wolves alike, of whom there are many. Aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, nieces, nephews… Even one of their grandmothers lives with them. As for siblings, they have nine in total, five brothers, and four sisters. Of these, Kastelle is of the most importance to them - she is their twin after all. Despite having so many family members, it’s very easy to go unnoticed, as such, Lumine has practically flown under the radar. The only reason they’re even able to leave home is thanks to Kastelle’s gregarious demeanour, coupled with the fact that she’s got their father wrapped around her finger. Their father sends shipments to Lihn every few months, and several years of her insistent pestering and pleading have persuaded him to allow her to visit the capital along with it. Lumine’s fascination with the written word and absorbing as much information as possible is the key variable though, because without their capacity to read and write, they wouldn’t be permitted to accompany their sister to Lihn in the first place. While their sister peddles their wars in the capital, they’re expected to upkeep bookkeeping and send detailed records back home. Not that they have any complaints though, because it means they can finally make something incredible of themselves, if only for the sake of childish spite. Pet(s)- None, though there are a few unbonded dire wolves accompanying their caravan to Lihn. User Information Username- Tabris!
