Touching down, the air dragon ruffled his wings, owl eyes observing everything. around him. Meanwhile, Iniiki took the time to slide off his back, landing on his feet.

"How long are we going to be here, mine? I wish to return to my nest and mate." He hooted softly. Ever since the owl dragon had managed to win a flight, the wrathful dragon had almost been insufferable with his need to protect, to guard.

"Not for long, I suppose. But you do need to give her space and stretch your wings instead of sitting around and getting fat."

"I am not getting fat." The Owl dragon scowled, nudging his rider with a wing.

"You will if you keep just eating. and doing nothing." Iniiki rolled his eyes. "Now come on, this mission was easy, and you know it."

The owl didn't say anything as Iniiki bent down to fill up his waterskin with fresh water from the stream. He shuffled his wings, keeping close to his rider, yet ears swilving as the wind brought to him what he couldn't see. Smells, sounds. The forest swayed with life around them. The boughs before danced in the soft air, sunlight dancing down upon them. Birds flitted from tree to tree, chirping. It was peaceful, the job they had taken relatively easy.

But Shi was anxious to get back to the Academy. Soon it would be hatching and he would like to be there when his child broke free from his shell and made it into the world. He wanted to watch his child with pride bond like he had done, to a suitable candidate. But that would be soon.

He watched as his rider stretched, taking his time and he grumbled irritably. They had to be leaving soon, right? Before, however, he could say anything, the Owl dragon stiffened, and turned his head to face a noise. Something was coming. Large. Dangerous perhaps?

"Mine, something large is coming this way, Another dragon. " The owl dragon alerted his rider to the oncoming presence. Iniiki paused, closed his waterskin and then rolled his shoulders.

"Well, As we're so close to the Academy, I doubt that it would be a taint...or a mindless one anyways." Iniiki muttered, as they both waited for the dragon to make itself known.

So far... so far away. What have I become? What am I now? Where are you? Where are you...?

A hissing wind blew up and swirled around the dragon and rider; something stirred from where it lay amid the trees. Sunlight glanced off of white scales and golden fur, and where they should have had a sheen of health, they were dusty and dull. As the beast lifted its head, violet eyes opened and settled upon the newcomers, flat and lifeless with an air of true despair.

For three weeks had he been gone from Lihn; they probably thought him dead or missing. Here he had come, a place that Kallo used to love. Memories ran thick beneath these trees - memories he clung to, his sanity personified. The orders, the tension, it had all become too much to bear. The Air had to leave, had to escape. And now, what did he have?

Nothing.

"Have you come to bring me back?" the dragon asked, voice low. He watched Wan and Iniiki, and then looked away. Slowly, he lay his head back along his paws, long muzzle twisted into a frown. "I can't escape it all..."

He was a rather small dragon for an Air, with hybrid-wings half-folded across his back. There were new tears in the webbing of his wings -

and he crashed through the branches of the tree canopy, unyielding, not heeding the ground that rushed up to meet him, too taken by despair to feel any of the pain

- and scratches along his sides. He was thin, scales lusterless and pale, and looked as though he hadn't eaten anything since he left. The wind that swirled around him ceased to blow and he closed his eyes. "I couldn't do anything..."

Anything at all.

Both Rider and Dragon looked at the scrawny, injured dragon as it spoke to them. Well, no they hadn't been sent to do such a thing, but Iniiki was mildly curious over the state of him. With No rider dismounting, or making themselves known--iniiki was going to have to go and say that the dragon was a taint.

He hoped former.

"I'm not here to drag anyone back to the academy if that's what your asking. Besides--I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you've lost your rider. Unless you've been healed by a Karma dragon, you're not really allowed back at the academy until then." Iniiki spoke up, keeping close to his own dragon. Both might be of the same breed, but this one looked to be older than wan. Wan might be a bit bigger (not by more than few feet, he would have to guess) But if this was a war veteran who might snap and attack, Experience could trump youthful strength and stamina.

"But if you wish to have that done, we can certainly escort you." Wan replied slowly, owl eyes taking in the elder air with regards. So far, he hadn't come off as a threat, and while he was completely at a loss as to what the other air was doing out here, or even by what he meant, Wan could at least try to help him. If he wanted it.

Iniiki glanced up at his dragon, who stood tall before sighing. Not like his dragon to really offer help to anyone, but he had a thing for honor and respecting his elders--as long as they didn't incur his wrath. Iniiki was having a hard time getting the Owl to settle down about grudges, but the Owl wouldn't completely give up.

"We were heading back there anyways. If that's what you are up to. Else, we might have to ask what you are up to. You know, safety reasons and all that." Iniiki finished.

"Yes," Howl hissed softly, opening his eyes once more. Vision flickered and blurred; his pupils dilated back and forth, unable to focus for long. "Healing... They said... I could be healed. They did. But the pain... the pain never went away..."

He struggled to life his head, wanting a better look at these two who had so disturbed his relative peace. He felt so... weak. So very, very weak. But even the weakness of starvation, the thread of impending death, didn't scare him anymore. "I wish to go back," he whispered sullenly. "I wish to. But I cannot... I can't face such memories again. I can't go back to the place filled with his essence.

"I will die out here," he whispered. "I will die, alone. And I will be with him once again..."

Both air rider and air looked at him, eying each other. This one was really off it's rocker, though not in the way that they would expect. True, there wasn't a might danger from the air, but if it was suicidally depressed, who knew what other emotion it could suddenly switch too.

"normally, after...after you've been healed, we don't keep tabs, unless you're own a mission and simply forgot about it...." Iniiki began, unsure of how the whole redeemed taint. Normally the redeemed 'sekkain' breeds weren't as harshly watched depending on how long they were tainted......But then again, he was a mere scout.

"And how will that serve 'his' memory." Wan hooted, getting indignant about the talk about suicide. The young air had no knowledge of the pain that the other may have. His rider was still alive, but Wan shi Tong saw no honor is suicide, in letting one's waste away. "A disgrace is what I call it. Instead of putting yourself to use to honor your rider's memory, you'd rather wallow around in your misery."

"Shi...." Iniiki threw up a warning shot, hands clenching, as he looked around. He would rather not get into a fight with this air dragon. Perhaps they had a chance against the elder air, perhaps they didn't. He didn't want to find out. Gods forbid his dragon to start taunting.

"No. Listen. You don't have to come back and stay. But you should come back, rest and then put yourself to use. There are plenty of jobs around of rebuilding or defending areas that you could do. I am sure your rider would want that for you instead of wallowing about. The world is still here, there are others who could use your assistance. And isn't that what your purpose was when he was still around? To help others, to protect others when they couldn't protect themselves? What honor would you do, wallowing around, wasting away when others, who may be dying now could have been saved if you were there at your best?"

Iniiki wanted to smack his head, looking up at the almost cloudless day. What was he going to do with such a dragon that would not let something go when he bit in. He sighed, again. Iniiki understood more of what the dragon felt, of having had the one thing that made your world yanked from you, taken and slaughter. Memories of his love, his teammates, all surfaced and sank as he batted the memories away.

"Sure, it may not be easy to begin with--but if you keep your head up, and find friends perhaps, it'll get slightly easier. And then one day you can join him, but with pride that you accomplished more for him than wasting away here in some forlorn forest." Shi shuffled his feathers again, and blinked, almost having never blinked throughout his rant. Iniiki wanted to strangle him. Who was he to lecture someone when he was so young? True, Dragons may be a bit more mature at times, but sometimes his dragon got a head of himself. He held his breath waiting to see what the other would do. He really. really. hoped it didn't come down to a fight. He hated fighting dragons.

Some small flame ignited in the despairing Air; a flicker of anger that slowly, ever so slowly, made its way into his eyes. With a ragged, shallow breath, he lifted his head and stared at the owl-dragon and his rider, using muscles he had long since abandoned the use of. He rose and let his lips slide up to reveal long, curved fangs, as that anger began to grow. "You know nothing," he breathed. "Nothing. You know not despair or pain - you have never lost as I've lost, you've not seen your crystal shatter, heard the screams of your rider's agony, watched as he was torn limb from limb before your very eyes -"

He spread his wings unsteadily, mantling them, a shaky threat. Though he stood, he was so weak that his limbs trembled with the simple effort of staying upright, and he couldn't lift his wings higher than the middle of his neck. How long he had been out here it would have been hard to tell. But with those wings moved away, his sides were revealed, dull scales and loose flesh hanging from a rack of prominent bones. His ribs were fully revealed, and it looked as though he hadn't eaten in a very, very long time.

"Do not tell me what to think until you have felt my agony yourselves," he snarled. Howl wavered, wobbling as he stood, breathing heavily between each rumbling growl. "Do not speak to me of how I should act! You, neither of you, know nothing of my pain!"

Shi's own eyes started to glimmer with rage. If anything, Shi was a -wrathful- dragon. Any slight against him, was a measurable offense. Offense that he didn't hold lightly.

Shi was not a dragon you wanted to have anger. Shi held grudges for a very. Very long time. While the other air struggled to looking menacing, Shi's wings flared, effortless, his feathers fluffing out, making him look far more larger than he was. Perhaps if Howl had been in better shape he would stand a chance in a fight--but he held no contest. Shi could rip him to shreds, and Howl couldn't stop him. If he had wanted pity, he had come to the wrong dragon.

Iniiki's own rage, sparked. Memories of his /friends/ his /family/ being taken from him. The dragon said he knew naught? Iniiki knew more of the war than Shi did, had fought behind friends and colleagues. Had seen them die, had been powerless to save them.

Hadn't been able to save her. Any of them.

Iniiki's response was to start laughing. It was not a good sort of laughter, masking his own pain, his own hurt in it. "Of course I know nothing of you pain." Iniiki snapped.

"But do not go assuming you know anything of me. I have fought in the war before I bonded. Raiders took my lover and child from me, tainted destroyed my friends, carrying us off far into the desolate only to be eaten by the newborn taints when they weren't chosen by the horror offspring that sprung forth. You have not seen what I have seen. Those monsters that ate them alive before me. Those that I ate with, fought with, laughed with, swore to protect. And failed. Luck was with me when I escaped and made my way back to bond to Shi." Iniiki shot back. "Do not assume that I have not seen my bonded friends torn from their dragons, killed as we defended those that could not defend themselves"

With each word, Shi's own wings got larger, his own threat mirroring Iniiki's rage when the other air told him he knew nothing of agony and pain. True, perhaps it was not the same as loosing the other half of the soul, but it was still agony none the less. It still caused him nightmares that woke him in the dead of night. That caused him to work harder.

"You know nothing of our pain" Iniiki parroted back at the dragon, "We didn't come here seeking you out, you came to us."

Shi had stayed silent, hiding his own surprise at his riders anger. And that made him even more angry. That dragon had caused his rider grief, and Shi didn't take kindly to that. The rider was his, if anyone should be causing him grief, it should be Shi himself (Not that the owl dragon wanted to cause Iniiki that sort of grief). But he spoke.

"If you want to die without honor, go crawl somewhere else then. We will not help you with that. " Shi hissed, a strange noise from the owl dragons throat. "But I will not tolerate you harassing us because you think you know everything. That you are better because your pain is supposed to make you better than us. All you know is that pain. You know nothing, because you refuse to see anything else. You refuse any other help. Healing a crystal doesn't take away the pain, but there are other ways to help. You just refuse to see that. Pain clouds your judgement. Because you are weak."

Howl roared weakly in response; he started forward and stumbled, using his wings to try and sustain balance. "Nothing compares!" he cried, venom in his words, pain making his voice shake. He didn't know what to feel anymore - agony overtook everything. Was it fury? Rage? Hate? Or was it something more subtle...?

What was he looking for?

The words of his fellow Air made him wonder, briefly, just what he wanted. Did he want death? Assuredly. But now...? Fear flickered in his eyes, but he couldn't stop his forward momentum. He didn't want to die. Not now. Not here. He pushed that side away from himself, and terror lit in his eyes.

But he was too weak to stop; he had already taken a swipe of his claws at Shi's shoulder, stumbling as he passed. Claws catching in the soft forest mulch, he fell hard a few feet away, dust rising around his white form.

Breathing labored, there he lay, blackness closing in on his vision as he struggled to stay conscious. He had gone so long without sustenance; it had been folly to stay here, away from everything, wanting to die. But he realized it now. But now, it may be too late...

Maybe now, he was really, truly dying.

Shi schreeched again, anger and rage fueling the owl dragon. How dare he think that their suffering was nothing. How dare he, the egotistically bird was not worth Shi's time. Decision made. Let the dragon die. He deserved it, after the so callous conversation between them. Shi didn't take kindly to being insulted and ridiculed--he or his rider. The other would hear no reason, so why should he bother?

"Then you are just a waste of our time." Shi responded, cold. Black eyes stared at him in anger.

Though the sound that came out of him when the air lunge made Iniiki's ear's cringe. Of all the things the other air to do, actually trying to attack Shi had not made it on their list. It mattered not that the air had fallen short. Nothing mattered to the air, who snarled and grabbed his rider and leapt away from the offensive dragon.

He landed on the other side of the clearing and started at the motionless dragon, anger, hate broiling in the dragon. How dare He. However, not like shi could do anything. The other dragon hadn't touched him and Shi's policy had been rendered ineffective.

"We'll be leaving then, we don't want anything to do with such a low-life as you who can't even be polite or have any sort of manners." Shi screeched, wings out stretched waiting for Iniiki to climb up. They couldn't do anything, and any attempt they had done had been metted out with anger, and hostilities.

Iniiki's own eyes stared at the fallen dragon. Unlike shi, he seemed to have more compassion, the more willingness to forgive than his dragon.

"I"m still willing to help you, even if my dragon is not. You just have to get off your pedastool and ask for it."

The White was filled with agony, fear and weakness; it shone in his eyes, and the world dimmed all around him. He started to see things that moved in the dappled forest light, images, ghosts... little Kallo was running towards him, fear in his own eyes. Terror. He could feel it. He could sense it all around.

Howl could feel the young boy's touch on his muzzle; hear the calming words. He could see his rider as the world misted over, as Kallo begged him not to give up - not to let go. He knew, without a doubt, what would happen if the boy was still alive. And the fear overcame his heartache, soothed the searing wounds, and reality slowly returned to clear the forest around him of the mist brought on by such a vivid hallucination.

I don't want to die yet. Not here. Kallo, I'm sorry... He opened his maw to speak - but no words would come. Vainly, he struggled to lift his head and fell back down, trembling everywhere. He was going to die. He felt it in his bones; and it terrified him beyond anything. That he had wished for this just moments ago - how could he have been so needlessly stupid? The once-cocky White had been brought so very low...

"Please," he whispered, voice barely audible. His vision blackened and his eyes fluttered closed. "I..."

And then he fell unconscious, unable to hold on any longer.

The owl dragon watched with no remorse as the other fell, his strength leaving him. He heard his plea, but why should he? The fool had come here to them, on his own accord. Had started making horrible accusations to them, (All of which had not been very nice) and then tried to attack him. It only served him that he should fail.

He did not deserve the help from the Owl dragon. He had not gained the respect or trust of him; all he had proven was that he was prone to attack, to insult and believe that the world revolved around him.

It didn't. He huffed, his feathers slowly starting to settle back into place and he shifted his wings to lay more comfortable along his spine. With the threat now incapacitated, Shi could slightly relax.

"We should go. We still have things to do, and we don't need to waste time with such a dishonorable dragon." Shi hissed, wishing the dragon had landed a hit. He would love to try and lock claws with that dragon. Prove to him that he was wrong.

Iniiki just stared at the air frowning. Usually, the merc would have just left him. He had insulted and attacked them for no apparent reason when all they had been trying to help. Shi was young, and they could only offer words or to take him back. But he had refused at first and now. Now he was asking for help.

He ran a hand through his short brown hair as his mind thought. He threw his jacket backs he stuffed his hands in his pants, the brown material soon flapping in the wind as it picked up. It was a soft wind, like the kind on a summer day. The tree boughs danced, the shadows playing across his face as he thought. He had promised that he would offer help.

And he would stick to that word.

"Shi, We can at least take him back to the academy."

"This..this disgraceful being? He does not deserve it! He attacked us. Degraded us as though he was on higher ground." Shi screeched at him in disbelief.

"But I gave my word that I would still help. And he did ask for it, at the last minute." Iniiki pinched his nose. "I never go back on my word, besides, perhaps when he's better, he can call in a favor."

The ex-merc knew it was going to be hard to get the owl dragon to go along with this plan, to accept that this is what his rider had wanted. He turned and stood his ground, crossing his arms and staring his dragon down.

"Shi. He asked. We are soldiers of the academy. We are not going to just...let this dragon die when he asked. All we are going to do is get him back to the academy to the infirmary and that is it. We don't have to stick around and make sure he is alright, we don't have to do anything beyond that. He may not want to go back, but he asked for our help, and that is the only help I am going to give him. The healers and other riders at the academy can do the rest."

Shi hissed, his feathers ruffling back out in agitation with his rider. Of course, a bonded pair could never always see eye to eye. If they did, that was a sign, to the rider, that there was something wrong, a problem bubbling beneath the surface waiting to boil over and explode at the worst opportunity. Honesty, at least between the two, was better than trying to placate each other.

"An eye for an eye." Shi hissed.

"There is no reason for an eye for an eye. All that was, was barking. All bark and no bite. And we barked back, if I remember correctly shi. Technically speaking, an eye for an eye has already been served here."

"He attacked---"

"He tried. And he failed. Do not slight him when he did not even graze a feather . Now shut your beak and help me."

Shi just stared at his rider.

"No."

"Oh you insufferable, codgemongling, taint-smacking idijit" What if it were reversed and he was helping you instead?"

"It's not reversed and I would have never done such a thing."

"Will you shut up already and just help me. Or I swear I will find a way to make you eat nothing but lettuce for the rest of the year! and Sell all your junk that you hoard in your nest!"

"YOU WILL NOT."

"Then get off your taint-forsaken high horse, and get over here and help me."

They stared at each other, tempers rising with each other. Finally the owl dragon growled. "You will regret this. I swear it." Shi hissed.

Iniiki rolled his eyes. "Yeah yeah sure whatever."

Together they tackled the problem of moving the dragon. It took time and effort, and neither of them had thought to go grab someone else, a larger dragon. Shi wouldn't leave his rider and his rider didn't think leaving the dragon would be good (especially if Shi decided to just abandon him after all).

Finally, after hours of careful walking the owl dragon, carrying the other, managed to make it to the academy. Managing to make it near the infirmary, Shi carefully removed him from his back.

"We have arrived at the academy...near the infirmary. I can't carry him any longer."

Iniiki sighed. "Well I suppose it's better than nothing." He muttered, before deciding to go get someone else. a healer perhaps.

They were at once met by a Rosemary with long white wings and iridescent scales; she had a long, horselike mane and a frill of white feathers that glinted in the sun. Her rider, who jogged beside her, wore white robes and had dark hair and dark eyes, a pack of herbs strung over one shoulder. "Lay him down and step back," the healer said, slowing as they neared. "What happened? Where was he? Where is his rider?"

"This is Howl," the Rosemary said, looking over the trembling, comatose White. "His rider was killed and he Tainted. But he was healed... and then he disappeared. Has his crystal been broken once again?" She looked suddenly worried - they would need to get a Karma, had he rebroken. He looked half dead already...

"When was the last time this dragon had eaten?" the healer murmured, running his hands over the dragon's shoulder. He was skin and bones - his fur was matted and unkempt, scales dull, some falling out. One horn was cracked and several of his claws were overgrown. It was clear he hadn't taken care of himself for a very long time. "Did grief do this? Or was he taken by the Taint once again...?"

The owl dragon wanted to take off and leave, but his rider stayed fast as a healer came out. They were swift, already examining him for wounds or anything that desperately needed tending. Shi's feathers rose in agitation, but before the owl could snap at the kind pair, Iniiki spoke.

"Don't think he's been tainted again. Don't know. All I know is when he appeared, he already looked like that." Iniiki responded. "Doesn't look like he's been taking care of himself. He's depressed to the point of suicide."

"Are we done here?"

Iniiki rolled his eye, rubbing his face. This was not how things were supposed to be going.

"Shi, can you be any ruder"

"Why should I show respect to someone who would attack me?" He hissed again. Shi's wrathful gaze bored into the unconscious air, the grudge settling in the pit of both their stomachs. Shi would never give up this grudge until it had been paid in kind.

Whatever the air decided would be appropriate. Even if Howl thought to apologize or try to make it up the owl, nothing would really sway the air dragon. An eye for an eye, he lived by.
