Character Number. 1 Name. Reil Vedras Age. 26 Gender. Male Sexuality. Ambiguous Appearance It's hard to lose Reil in a crowd, if only for his height and the unmistakable white hair that falls to his hips. At just over 6'6” there are very few humans who he has to look up at when speaking. His skin is tanned from a lifetime spent in the sun which has also left him with the beginnings of crow's feet despite his age. Beneath carefully-groomed eyebrows and occasionally lined in khol, his sea green eyes are discerning and expressive. His sharp cheekbones and the inverted triangle of his jaw throw the rest of his features into high relief that give his face a strangeness that is not always aesthetically pleasing. If you can't see him, chances are good you'll at least hear him coming. Known to wear more jewelry than the average woman and with a voice that carries well over the chaos of a medical tent stealth is not one of his graces. Born into an extensive Assarian family of mostly merchants, certain habits, such as the wearing of one's wealth, have been hard to break. Gold hoops climb the shells of his ears and his limbs and extremities are always adorned with an ever-changing array of gold, silver, and copper pieces. Neither is it uncommon to see stray glints of metal threaded or tied into his hair. The only constant is a heavy, simple, gold choker worn low at his throat. His clothing, while simple, is always expertly fitted and ridiculously clean. Most of it is made of silks that his cousins bring when they visit from Esam. Beneath his clothing is a body just beginning to go soft as he spends more time in one place rather than on extended expeditions. Reil's skin is remarkably bare of any distinguishing scars despite having needed coercing into offering his services in the past. The only truly strange modification he has made to himself is a usually hidden piercing at the back of his neck. He got it on one of his stranger trips into the jungles of southeastern Nyushi, mostly to prove the importance of cleanliness to medical practice, though other motives such as being forced to do so or to save his own skin after a social gaff are also suspect. Personality As careless in who he works for as he is vain in taking care of himself and recklessly neutral, Reil will work on anyone for a price. He defines himself by his work and will always correct that he is not a healer, but a doctor, and finds great humor in being referred to as a “sawbones”. When it comes to his work, this is a man that asks no questions and tells no lies. With no magic of any kind and never having had the desire to be a dragon rider, he knows his own limitations. He has studied the ways in which to treat injuries and cure or ease illnesses extensively in Lihn, making use of the numerous libraries. The crux of his practices lay in cleanliness and consistency. He travels as often as he can, frequently into far-flung, god-forsaken, and frankly dreadful areas to learn more about possible medicinal plants or procedures. Most of these escapades are fruitless, demonstrations in what not to do, but a large part of knowing his limitations as a doctor are in expanding his knowledge as much as possible. Reil will flirt with anything that breathes for no other reason than the fact that he feels like it. In fact, most of the things he does seem to be in an effort to stave off boredom. He can only be serious for so long. A medical quandary may send him into his books or have him packing his bags to investigate further for weeks or months at a time. However, most of the time his cases are simple; injuries and illnesses he's seen before and knows what to do about, or people too far beyond his ability to help. Those are the times that he is most likely to get into trouble. Fond of making social calls and hosting parties that cater to a less savory crowd, he has spent many a night doctoring his own injuries. For as strange and overly-sociable as Reil is, he is one of the more reserved members of his family. His cousins, for which it seems there must be at least one in every town the way he describes it, have taken up as merchants and each is more flamboyant than the last. He always seems to owe someone in his family some kind of favor or be collecting upon a favor. During his yearly pilgrimage to Esam he tends to disappear into one of the many markets for hours at a time or hide in the kitchens with his mother and three sisters. Rank. Civilian Reil is happy to offer his services to almost any military organization, often at no charge, but has no desire to join any faction. His mercenary and capitalist tendencies however have so far made him unattractive to the general military. History Shockingly, Reil was a shy child. The youngest of four and the only boy, it meant that he was babied by his sisters and continues to be whenever he returns home. While in Esam his family was not considered wealthy, they were more than comfortable. He was able to attend school and took well to his studies. His father and grandfather were both tailors by profession and as such occasionally stitched more than just clothing. As he grew older Reil's interest in medicine became more pronounced. One of his sisters, Kiva, had gone with some of their cousins to Lihn to try for a position as a candidate at the academy. She wrote often, the letters generally coming in as a batch, the goings on of the capital city and especially about the dragon riders. During her last possible hatching she was chosen by a water dragon named Heres. Reil was never that interested in dragons, after reading Kiva's letters describing the bond she shared with her dragon it only reinforced that he didn't want to be that closely bonded with any creature. What did interest him however were all of the other academies available to him in the city. So, at the ripe age of 11 he begged, and pleaded, and finally convinced his father that he should be allowed to study medicine further in Lihn. At first he stayed with cousins in the city, but the novelty of their extravagance quickly wore off. The opportunity to live elsewhere was a direct result of his first mistake. At the age of 15 one of his cousins brought home a man who had been on the bad end of a knife. In good faith, Reil disinfected and stitched up the shallow stab wound to the man's lower leg. This wouldn't have been a problem if the man, a theif, had kept his mouth shut. Soon though, Reil had turned up on the radar of more than one criminal as a cheap source of medical attention. While it gave him a chance to practice what he was learning at the academy, it also thrust him into the shadier circles of Lihn. By no means a genius doctor, he had no healing magic at his disposal, Reil was still effective. The money his cousins extorted on his behalf for services rendered allowed him to rent his own quarters. Small and shabby at first, his kitchen table doubled as his examining bench. As his skill increased and extortion became unnecessary, his cousins having set a precedent of payment, he was able to move into better buildings. Occasionally he would do his work for free, taking leads from the professors at his academy that sent him to war zones or just towns in need. These trips allowed him to make detours to check on one rumor or another as far as medicine was concerned and were the start of his own wild goose chases. These days Reil is very nearly respectable. He still takes patients who show up on his doorstep in the dead of night and makes house calls to individuals of dubious affiliation, but most of his work is done in the name of patching up the less fortunate. The criminals pay better and are what allow him to live comfortably, but his pleasure is in treating those who cannot afford care otherwise. He usually refuses payment from those patients, but upon insistence will take no more than what they can afford and very rarely includes actual tender. Pet(s). None, Reil isn't much for non-human company. --- User Information Username. Sayuri Contact. syncretic.attempt@gmail.com Yourself Not much to say about me. I'm a full-time college student and work nearly full-time. That being said, I love writing and always make time to do it. I've been roleplaying on forums since I was 12 (I will admit to fudging my age by a few months to get around COPPA). My first attempts were pretty terrible, but I like to think I've improved my skill and become far more reasonable. These days I try to make characters that fill a need in demographics and write them well rather than overly powerful characters that don't fit in with their world. I'm hoping to find a new home on your forums =] How did you find Sekkai? I saw [this] and just had to check out the site. It was too cool of a character concept not to. --- Please let me know if anything needs changing! The information available on races was plentiful, but the information on places was harder to find. As a result I'm pretty sure Reil's history has to be augmented a little bit and perhaps I should move him from Lihn to Hellman's Well now that he's finished his schooling. |
