Morning light wove it's way through the tree boughs as the day broke upon the slumbering earth pair. Birds began to chirp, waking up the rest of the world, yet the earth made no move. Nor did the young rider curled up in a makeshift shelter. It wasn't until the sun hit the earth full on did he start to wake. He stretched, lifting his head off his front paws and yawned. Tongue lolling about as his Blue eyes blinked open and he surveyed the world around them. His movement, sent the white swallow tailed kite into the air, wings whispering on the wind as it flew higher and higher, before lighting off, presumably to hunt for her own breakfast. The Earth dragon watched the bird fly away before he yawned again, before lowering his head down to the small makeshift tent. the coals from the fire were still warm, yet no glow came from them. It had long since gone out, and would be warm to the touch but to cold to do much with. With a smile on his lips, he nudged his nose into the tent, carefully before managing to nudge his own rider. "Arina." he began. "Arina, wake up. Come on. It's morning." He stretched, beginning to pull himself to his feet as he left her tent. It had taken some skill and practice for him to stick his face into her tent, and much redoing of the tents or needing new ones. It didn't take long for the young woman to stir from her sleeping bag. Blearily she peered out of the tent, and stared up at the sky. Light blue streaked with the orange crimson of the sunrise. She yawned and stretched before disappearing back into the tent. It didn't take long for the sleep-addled rider to at least dress appropriately for the day's ride, and as she left the tent, she finished tying her hair up in a bun. No good letting it get everywhere, and poked at the fire. "I think we're heading north, yes?" Karst asked, shaking his head, as she fetched the birds that had been cooking over night. She had learned that trick from a friend, and then began to rebuild the fire. In minutes the silent rider had a small fire going and finished cooking the rest of her breakfast. "I thought we were going south..?" She finally answered, dark eyes blinking up at the dragon, feeling unsure about all this again. "Isn't that what we are supposed to do?" She frowned, as she boiled water. She felt like she needed a bath, but didn't have the guts to bath in any of the waters--so she cleaned and washed so that she at least didn't smell and most of the grime was washed away. "Perhaps. I think we should just pick a direction and go. Who knows what we'll find?" He nodded. "yes. That sounds like fun." Arina sighed, and shifted. She hadn't liked the sound of just leaving, but Karst had wanted to, and she couldn't fathom just leaving him to do gods knew what. Eventually, they were packed and Arina double checked all the straps to Karst's saddle. When she was sure that nothing was going to slip or toss her around, did the young woman climb up the shoulder. Even with all the work put in with being an Earth rider, she didn't seem to loose any weight....though by now, most of her fat had been turned into muscle. But that didn't bother Arina one bit. She ate healthy, she was healthy as far as she was concerned. "Shall we then?" Karst wiggled, eying the mountains that stood before them. "I suppose. Rishi went to hunt?" She asked, noting that she had not seen the white kite anywhere while she had prepared. "I believe so. But I think that is her right there." True enough, the small bird circled above them, and Karst took that as a sign. "North it is!" Karst Spoke with no fear in his voice, and only a song on his heart as he traversed closer and closer to the mountains. Arina was not as confident as Karst, but she had been assured that they would be safe. Perhaps they would find new friends? On the other hand, they could have a run in with rouge taints. Karst didn't want to dwell on the negative so she had silently filtered those thoughts to the back of her mind. As the mountains rose before them, Arina blinked. They were far larger than she had imagined. The noble young lady hadn't ever travelled so far from the academy She had been all over the jungle visiting villages and what not, but never so far, and never had she felt so....alone. Yet it was an oddly freeing experience. It was quiet. And she didn't have to worry about what others thought or wanted her to do. She could pick her tasks and think them through with all the time she needed without feeling rushed. Perhaps this was a good thing. "They're huge! Do you think it would take long to get to the top?" "Are we even at the base yet?" "I don't think so." "Then probably would take a few days to get up. At least by climbing. Perhaps if we could fly." "you don't like flying." "Which is just as well." The pair fell silent, as the walked, the ground quaking beneath Karst's claws as he made a path for him that didn't disturb the plants too terrible much. The earth folded back together when he was passed. As Arina predicted half-heartedly, it took most of the morning to reach the base. The large trees that once barred their passage became scraggily and scraggily and the land itself started to take to an incline. Grass turned to stone, as the trees started to turn smaller and smaller until the they were either lone pine trees, or brushes. Birds flocked away from the mountains, as the pair glimpsed mountain goats before they leaped away, further up and away, disappearing out of view. "Wow, it looks...a bit smaller than I thought." Karst spoke, still staring up at the peaks. While he stood tall, the mountain still towered several hundred feet above him. "It still looks pretty huge." Arina whispered as she stroked the landing kite's head. Rishi closed her wings as claws dug into her shoulder. "But we can do it!" Karst nodded. "It's just a small detour." "Can we break first? She asked. Karst paused, before nodding. "sure, but then we can climb it?" "Of course." It didn't take long for the Earth rider to slide down his arm and stand on her two legs. She stretched and disappeared into the bushes again. Karst stretched his wings, putting one paw on a large boulder gently. The wind blew gently before he turned to watch his rider return from her break. "This will be alright, mine. Trust me! We can't fall really! I can glide if anything happens, but it looks to be an easy climb." Arina stared up at the large rock of earth. While she was on Karst, the world did seem more conquerable, but once her own feet touched the ground, any confidence she may have had on the back of her large dragon seemed to dissolve. She frowned, and looked around. "I'm going to eat something first, I think." It didn't take long for her to find the rations that she had stored away and began to munch them, leaning against Karst's foreleg while they surveyed the terrain. |

"Are we there, yet?" Elu threw her hands into the air in a fit of exasperation. Tucked into Ubasti's mane as a form of saddle it probably wasn't the safest thing to do, but she trusted the felid Earth well enough not to jostle her without warning. The young woman sighed, looking out into the forest growth with distaste as her mount calmly padded along, her enormous feet making soft tremors in the soil. The Earth dragon snorted, great eyes roving up to look at her. She could only see the heels of her rider's feet dangling from her forehead, but that was enough for her. "You would know that, silly," she warbled. The dragon turned to look ahead again before she walked into a tree. It happened often enough that it had become a hazard in the northern land, though with her enormous size, plowing into some of the older ones was more of a nuisance rather than an actual threat. Oh, what she wouldn't give to just run again. The plains were her favorite, as they were for Elu, but the hot weather had pushed them north in search of retreat and water. The ocean, unfortunately with Elu's phobia, was no an option. Somewhere nearby, some day's ride north of the Academy, they had heard, were a system of waterfalls and pools large enough for her to swim. "I'm just impatient. And thirsty...and in dire need of a bath. Sorry, love," Elu whined. She patted her dragon's soft forehead with a gentle hand. Ubasti purred, the deep, resonating sound vibrating throughout her entire body. "I know," she said. "We will be there soon. I promise." The rider resigned herself to sprawling backwards. It wasn't likely that it would be too soon. They had been searching for hours as they came to the foot of the mountains. Looking up, with the dragon gently ambling along beneath her in a steady tempo, she felt tempted to fall asleep. Ubasti would catch her if she slipped off. She nearly did, too, until something brown moved out of the corner of her eye. Elu bolted upright, parting the thick sea of fur around her to peer out into the forest. What was that? Cautiously, the young woman batted Ubasti's head. "Hey, look over there, to your left. Did you see that?" "Hmm?" the Earth murmured. With a lazy turn, the felid dragon looked toward the direction of Elu's hand and squinted. She was about to turn away, unconvinced, before something very large indeed parted the trees. The dragon blinked in surprise at the creature's odd shape, readying to fall into a defensive crouch, before a sudden burst of elation exploded in her belly. She knew that dragon! "It's Karst, Elu!" she yowled. Before the girl could stop her, the dragon bounded away, nearly leaping over trees in her attempt to get to the other Earth. "One of my clutchsiblings! Let's go!" It was all Elu could do to hold on when her dragon immediately took off. She clung to the coarse mane for dear life, swinging back and forth with the enormous momentum of her dragon's bounding, but it came to a jarring halt before too long. Ubasti skittered to a less than graceful stop some meters away from the shorter Earth. She let loose a playful roar, thumping her forepaws against the ground in the draconic equivalent of a playbow. Elu meekly waved to the other rider from her position on Ubasti's head. "Hello Karst! What are you doing here?" |

Both heads shot to look at each other as both suddenly felt the earth itself start to shake. Arina felt something drop to the pit of her stomach. Something was coming at them. And she didn't want to be on the ground anymore. No. With as much speed as she could, she climbed the earth's leg and then moved to stand on top of his head as they both turned to look at the other dragon who skidded to a halt. Dirt and rocks went flying, thankfully in opposite directions, and it didn't take long for Karst to recognize the other dragon. Unlike his riders sudden drop in fear of something attacking, his reaction was more of curiosity before turning to glee and finding a friendly face around here. He smiled, relaxing more as the golden earth playfully bowed to them, much like a cat would. Blue eyes glistened and he nodded happily. "Ubasti! And Elu" He nodded, remembering their names effortlessly. Rishi, unhappy about all the commotion squawked high above, circling the gathering of earths before landing on on of Karsts' horns, feathers fluffed in agitation. "A pleasure to see you out here. We are merely scouting around. Though I was thinking of climbing this mountain. It is not as large as I thought it was, but I do so want to climb it. Arina said we could as well." He nodded, turning his gaze back up the to mountains. "And of you? What brings you two out here so far from the academy?" He asked. Now that there was no threat to them, Karst's nature to ask everything he could started to seep in. "How has life been treating you after lessons? Have any good adventures?" Arina stood as tall as she could on top of her own dragons head, her hands braced against one of Karsts horns. She waved over at Elu, smiling and managing to keep eye contact rather than drop it to the ground like the timid girl was prone to do. She felt safer on karst, and she sort of knew the other two. They had gone through lessons together, so they weren't exactly strangers. she just had never gotten to actually sit and talk with the other earth rider. She had always more or less tried to keep to herself. As much as the bold dragon below her would let her. "Perhaps we could do so together if you so wished. Unless you are busy. We wouldn't want to intrude if you are." Arina could only smile down at her dragon, the wind shuffling her dress around as they spoke. She could try to talk at the other dragon rider, but she didn't feel like shouting...Perhaps they should dismount and talk? Oh what to do. Perhaps she would get her cues from the other rider. She wasn't opposed to talking, but she didn't know what the other would want as well. She shuffled her feet again, feeling all sort of nervous about the niceties of meeting other people. |

Felid eyes brightened with playful mirth when Karst bellowed her name. Ubasti drooped into something of a play-bow when he responded, her back end upright and tail beginning to slash. Unfortunately for the trees, the heavy rake proved to be more effective in clearing the immediate area than any modern plow. Slivers of wood and deep green foliage went flying like shrapnel in her excitement, though for the two large creatures, it wouldn't prove to be any more painful than a light tap against their armored hides. Long claws extended and raked the rich soil, scratching, pulling, and tearing at the earth to leave long, deep, rents in the moist detritus. Elu, perhaps noticing the bundling muscles beneath her and knowing what would come next, pipped up from Ubasti's thick mane. She lifted a hand, waving it quickly. "We are doing well! Life's been good. We've been here and there and...well, sort of everywhere. We haven't settled down, but we like it that way!" she shouted. Some urgency crept into her voice thereafter, but it was not out of fear. Ubasti's shoulders bunched, ready to spring. A wide smile blossomed across Elu's face. She gripped the thick fur and braced herself for action. "To the top of the mountain, huh? I think we'll take you up on that offer!" A deep rumble was the only audible warning Ubasti gave before she launched herself toward Karst. "Iiiiiii'll race ya!" she cried. Her front paws smacked against his short front legs, and with one more bound she took off toward the northern mountains. Her head cleared the treetops, rearing back when she had made some distance to look for Karst's persuit. "Come on, guys! First one to the top gets to keep the thing we found the other day! It's shiny!" |

Hazel eyes watched with interest at the two earths. She steadied herself on Karst's head, as the other spoke to them. Traveling a lot. Nothing wrong with wanting to see the world, though for the timid girl, getting her even out this far from the academy had been a feat the Earth dragon had taken good pride in. The young woman noticed the urgency in the others tone, but had no context to why. Had she said something to offend? Or did they feel like they should just keep going without much chit-chat? Her hands found the soft fabric of the brightly colored shirt, and she twisted it slightly, her eyes dropping to stare at her feet. Her confidence faltered only briefly, as suddenly the other lounged for them. She backpedaled, not sure what to make of the sudden move--was this an attack? They had seemed so friendly? It had taken her a moment for her to process that the other just wanted to play. Karst had offered them to follow them to the top, and the other had wanted to make a game of it. A blush rose to soft cheeks and every blessing sent to whomever that no one could see how foolish she had been to think otherwise. Realizing that her own bonded wouldn't pass this opportunity up, she slid down his neck and strapped herself in with ease. Unlike Ubasti, Karst hadn't really anything for her to hold on to; so a saddle it was--besides, she rarely rode without, never feeling confident or secure enough without one at least on--even if she rode sometimes without strapping her self in. It was a security blanket and Karst never minded. to him, he couldn't really feel it, and it hindered him in no way. She had even gotten the colors to match that it almost blended in with his hide. Karst watched as the feline-esque earth started to tense up. Blue eyes twinkled as she bounded forward and tagged him before bounding up wards. A smile grew on his lips as she sung out her challenge. A race? He could do that. The fastest climber to the top would win. "You are on!" He replied, not backing down from the small challenge. Back legs pushed off as he flung himself up. Large claws dug themselves into the ground as he built momentum. Even his wings would occasionally grip the wall. His gecko-like influence in his build easily taking hold. Gravel, boulders and dirt started to roll down as he ran. Closer and closer the pair came, and Karst had just about caught up. The trees up here were sparser, and the sloping became more steep cliffs than jagged rock. But they could easily see the top. They were almost there. "Almost there, Ubasti!" Karst replied, Being a good sport. He wouldn't care if she won, or if he did. It was the thrill of the climb that really propelled him. |

Thick, hooked talons ripped apart soft loam and rocky soil as the Earth tore across the terrain. Her lungs heaved like a bellows, pushing great gusts of cold mountain air in and out of her expansive rib cage. She could only just feel the weight of her rider on the top of her head - the girl's tiny hands burrowed in the thick of her wirey mane, securing herself in place. Ubasti didn't look up for fear she'd crash and burn in the thick of the exhilarating race, but she rested assured that the girl was safe enough. It wasn't long before she realized that Karst was keeping pace. His shorter legs were a mark against him, but he was fast. The little Earth easily shot ahead as they reached the foothills of the mountain. She watched with wide, dialated eyes as his sticky toes and hooked wing joint scaled the rocky terrain straight up. As she herself came to the base of the mountain, she bunched her hindlimbs, readied her trajectory, and bounded up to the first footholds she could get her massive paws on. She scrabbled at the edge of an outcropping and dragged her hind limbs up by pulling her weight with her front limbs. The effort was exhausting, but, as she scaled right over it, she shook it off. Her body was made for this. Steep plateaus turned into jagged rock beneath a blur of dense golden fur. Ubasti craned her neck up every so often to check on Karst's progress. The leafy tip of her competitor's tail ducked over another lip of rock as it approached the snow-capped summit rising up into a blanket of misty clouds. She paused when she had enough space to place all four paws securely down. Blast it! The felid dragon let loose a low growl of frustration. Low for her, anyway; the deep rumble was strong enough to loosen small chips of splintered rock beneath her feet. She looked down and squinted at the rock. She felt a light tapping as her rider's heel began to beat against her forehead. Ubasti went a little cross-eyed trying to look up at her. "Use ya magic," Elu's faint voice projected. She cupped her hands to her mouth and aimed at the closer of her dragon's ears. "Ya didn't say t'was against the rules." The scales along Ubasti's spine pricked up at the thought. Her eyes went wide, her ears perking forward with excitement. "Oh, dear, you're right," she purred. A moment later, she crouched again and bundled her weight into her hind limbs. Magic poured from her body - invisible, but palpable to her. The earth shuddered and quaked, and by the time Ubasti bounded forward again, she was met with a neatly-placed, geometic pillar. Rough spires of granite, iron, and blackened bedrock rose to meet her feet at the slightest provocation. The rock beckoned to her quiet call, twisting and groaning up out of sheer faces to provide easy footholds. Ubasti climbed higher and faster as her magic worked with her, catching up. When she again spotted the unmistakable silhouette of Karst, she put on a new burst of speed and swept by him with a sputtering of gravel. "Last one there's a rotten Taint egg!" she yowled. |

If Karst had hair or feathers of any sort, he would be relishing the feel of it as it waved through it. As it stood, he had none, but it didn't stop him. Gecko-like feet easily grasped and stuck to much harder surfaces that other dragons might have trouble using. His large, leaf-straited tail easily helped him balance. Blue eyes focused, only ever so often glancing around to see where his other earthen companion's path had taken. For a spell he couldn't see her, it looked like he was in the lead, and he pursued onwards. The small woman held onto her saddle tightly, the movements of her dragon smooth beneath her, but still when ever Karst got to things like this, it had always made her uneasy in away. It was far more easier when they weren't trying to climb something and were easily ambling along than in a fast sprint. She knew Karst would never let harm come to her but sometimes she wondered if he had an air's spirit in a earth breeds body, with how he jumped and glided off things as often as he could. She just hoped he wouldn't this time. Of course, his lead wouldn't last long, as the earth shook beneath him and spoke. Moments later, spires arched for the heavens and atop them Ubasti bounded forwards. Not distraught by the overtaking or the fact she used her magic, he just saw it more as a challenge—that's how the game was, huh? He wiggled, debating how he was going to this. His toes gripped at the earth before he too called a platform, egging it to go straight up up up and up. He poured his magic into it. Unlike the other, he did not jump from platform to platform instead, as he rose higher and higher into the sky, he was playing a game of chance. Figuring he was high enough for his purposes, he widened his platform and took off running before flinging himself off the platform, aiming for the mountain. (for sure he had already surpassed the height with his platform.) instinct took over and he splayed out all of his legs, revealing the webbing that stretched from elbow to rib and hind knee to tail. He had more gliding power with his special body flight-suit and like a sugar glider, he went. With his fast descent, he was ever careful to make sure no living thing was in his path. Surely, he would get there, he could almost see the peak. He might have undershot it just a tad, but still. maybe. Maybe he would win. Arina nearly screamed when he flung himself off. Her knuckles turned white and she squinched her eyes shut. The moment the towers had started for Karst, she had assumed that two things were going to happen and the rider had hoped that he would opt to mimic the other earth, but instead he had chosen the one that terrified her to no end. But what was done and Karst wooped. "It's not gonnnnaa beee meeeeeee~" He hollered, even though he wouldn't mind if it was him. It was exhilerating in the freeform, the pseudo flight that he had taken. ((OOC: OH jees I'm sorry this took so long. :u; )) |
