Nothing really could prep the Lava rider for any sort of trip. She was never sure what to bring on any sort of mission really. The large lava rumbled as she had packed, trying to figure out what all she needed. Though, with the help of the dragon, he had least given her a basis. Clothes to last the whole trip, food, and other important objects she would need. Weapons, armor, and first aid. Though, as Mafic watched the young woman run around trying to pack things into the saddle bags that she had so carefully created with time and patience...and help. She was not a leather worker, but she had submitted ideas and together, they had created one that suited the lava's craggy masses and suited to the lava's riders taste. So with the place almost in chaos, the girl was making sure she had anything she needed at her disposal. Which was hard. Hard for the young woman who never knew what she would need. But with the Lava's help, the things in the pack were at least getting organized. Clothes with the clothes. Food with food, organized armor and weapons. The girl had enough skill to defend herself with a short sword and some daggers. Though she couldn't throw to save her life, but with a large Lava dragon she hoped she wouldn't have to be found in a situation where she needed to fight. That Mafic could just bat them away. Foolish thinking perhaps, but this was Nikki and Mafic could only try and persuade her otherwise. Or do his best to protect her. By the time they had left, they were, thankfully, not running late. The massive lava waited as she strapped herself in, and then they were off. The lava rider was dressed appropriate for travel. Short sleeved brown shirt with little embroidery on the seams in green thread, and short, loose fitting pants. Even with the heat-resistance saddle, the heat from the lava still made the summer weather hotter than it was. For this reason, she tended to keep her space from the lava dragon, in order to keep cool. "How long do you think we'll be gone?" Nikki asked, as she made sure she had packed her water skins as well. The past few years had been a transformation for the young girl. She had cropped her hair short. She had bangs and the rest was at least an inch or more short. With that, she looked more boyish than girl when she wasn't trying to accent her figure. As it was, the clothes now at least made her look more her gender. Light blue eyes never left her bags, and finally she counted enough. "For as long as it takes, M'dear." Mafic was patient with her. The suns rays rose over the horizon casting their warm rays into the clouds that floated above like lazy cotten balls floating on a pond before being sucked into the watery pools. Their soft underbelly's were painted with the reds and golds of the morning sun. They plodded on, heavy footfalls shook the ground. Sure, they could fly, but it took much effort for the large Lava to get airborne. He was very content to walk there. "Are we doing it alone, what are we doing anyways?" With precision, she pulled out some cross stitching that she could work on while Mafic lumbered along. "I believe we are checking something out. Scouting ahead. Reports of something rather large terrorizing a town or something. I believe we'll be working with someone." Mafic answered cooly. His voice rumbled ahead of them. "We'll be rendezvousing with another pair." "Who?" "I do not know yet. But we will know when we get there. We're meeting them at the edge of the jungle." Silence fell between them as the birds flew above them. Their sharp and sweet calls echoing out, alluring the day to rise sweeter. Surely, nothing would pass the Lava dragon and his rider and the large dragon merely bumbled along. They were in no true hurry, even with the chaos of the morning, they had left with plenty of time to spare. "Do we know what breed?" "Earth?" Mafic threw back, not wanting to disappoint the young woman. Sure, The Lava never had all the answers, but that did not stop him from trying. The low-key dragon didn't want to cause anything, though with his rider, it didn't doubt that she wouldn't take offense. Or really notice. "Oh." It didn't take them to reach the place where they were to meet, a rather large clearing a few ways in the jungle. Trees swayed in the breeze, barely coming up to the Lava's shoulders. While he stood at the maximum length, he was shorter. Stumpier legs made for squishing than running. He was a mountain, a walking volcano. With a Yawn, it looked like the pair were the first here. They didn't doubt that they other pair would come here, they had been given the same orders, he was told. Nikki, seeing a reprieve, skiddled off her dragon and stretched. Already, she sweltered. The heat from her own dragon, while tempered, still radiated around the area. When Winter came, he would be a welcome relief, but with summer still grasping the realm, it became barely tolerable. Drinking from her water skin, Nikki was glad she had packed several more than she probably needed. "Is this it?" "Yes. I am sure they are on their way." With that, Mafic stretched and sat. He stretched and yawned. His own lethargic nature kicking in, and it wouldn't hurt to indulge while waiting. |

Elysium shoved at Talula as the girl packed, using her long muzzle to shove her forward in excitement. This was not the first time she had done this from the presence of frost on the bird like girls jacket. The joyous ice child wagged her slender tail like an overgrown dog. The dragoness spread and reseated her wings over shimmering scales. She tried her best to resist, but she couldn’t help herself. She gave a soft whine and nudged her again. “It’s time we gotta go~” She warbled excitedly. Talula shoved the offending head back and laughed at the dragoness. “Not yet. When we finish packing. Do you want to leave without enough things?” Elysium huffed, sending out a fog of icy air as she pranced in place. “Come onnnn. You checked it twice! We are going to be late and then they will be like—“ She jumped to face another direction and her whirling almost slapped Talula with a wing, thankfully the girl dodged out of habit, “—You are late. Now we are late to our assignment. Things are going wrong.” She looked hopefully at Talula and grinned. “Just like that.” Talula rolled her eyes and stuffed an additional jacket and a pair of socks in the pack then stumbled towards the dragoness “Hold still you goof, if you want to leave I have to get the packs on you.” It was an effort but Elysium managed to remain still long enough for Talula to lace down the packs. This proved almost too much for her because her eyes caught on a spot of light that bounced off her scales. She reached out with a paw to swat at it, only to have Talula shove her leg back. “Just a moment.” The blonde girl said with a grin. She tightened down the last strap which secured the bags to the saddle securely. She took a step back and sighed. This was their first real mission. They had applied to be scouts, but that did not mean real issues would never need their attention. This would prove they were proper riders, which was important. Otherwise what was the academy paying them for? The moment Talula released the saddle the ice child sprung to life. She shook like a dog and then swatted at the first spot of light she saw. “And we get to work with someone right? You said we are working with someone? Do we know them? Are they friendly? Are we making new friends? That would be sooooooo great!” She squeaked and froze. Her head lifted and her feathers flicked up and down along her neck a few times causing them to chime. “Do we need to bring a gift?” Talula strapped her short sword to her hip and paused, her fingers brushing over Hitta’s simple surface. Without thinking she stuffed the spyglass into her pocket, one never knew when finding things would be important. With a grin she turned to face Elysium. “No no we don’t need gifts it’s a mission Ely we have work to do. This isn’t for making friends we need to be serious.” The dragoness skittered over and dropped down so her rider could climb onto her narrow back. “But let’s say, you know like hypo… hypo… hypo… let’s pretend. Let’s pretend that we do make friends though. While we do the work. Is that ok? Could we make friends while we work. That seems very reasonable.” She trotted to the leather that blocked their room from the outside and nosed her way past the weighted door which let her to a broad expanse which served as a balcony and a launch pad. She perched on the edge and shook her rump in the same way cats do when lining up a pounce. “I mean that would be ok right?” Talula laughed and dropped into the saddle she scratched her fingers along the base of the shining purple feathers on Ely’s neck. “Yes that is fine. But work first ok?” With a whoop of glee the ice dragon threw herself from the perch and her wings spread wide. “I will do my work and make friends! I can do both. I am GREAT at both!” She was fast in the air, and made short time of getting to the meeting place where the massive lava already resided. She landed beside him, something she was still not perfect at. With almost no grace she stumbled a few times in her landing. It took a few tries but she got her paws under her then spun to grin up at Mafic. “Hello we are your partners!!!” She near yelled as if he might not hear them due to his size. Talula sat up and waved, “Sorry I believe an earth was assigned to this patrol initially, but something came up. We are the replacement pair. I remember you from lessons. Good to see you well. Do you know the details?” “Talullulula!” Elysium scolded, “Where are your manners. They were in lessons but so where a lot of people, we should introduce ourselves.” She nodded and beamed. “I am Elysium, but everyone calls me Ely! You should call me Ely! It’s shorter and easier to say. This is my Talulululula, you can call her Talulula” “Talula is fine.” She corrected quickly, “Sorry she is very excited for today. She hardly slept.” |

With the expectation of another element, neither the Lava or rider bothered to check the skies. Surely, the announcement of the earth would be the trembling of the earth, much like Mafic’s, who walked mostly. To get the massive dragon in the air took effort, and when they didn’t have far to go, it was simpler to walk. Mafic, content to wait patiently, briefly wondered what Nikki was thinking. Impatience, and boredom started to roll through the young woman and Mafic sighed. To sit and wait without doing something was hard for the young woman. Why sit around and wait, when there was things to be done, and things to be bought? But, he wouldn’t let her shirk her duties for fanciful whims, they were soldiers after all. She didnt’ seem to mind when he pulled her away for things, no matter how she might complain. So, when the Ice suddenly dropped from the sky to land near them, it surprised the lava. And amused him. The Ice didn’t seem to quite have landings down gracefully, but at least, she managed to stay on her feet. Amusing but Mafic merely smiled. He could feel the slight surprise from his bonded, but before any of them could speak or ask, the pair difused the slight confusion for the pair of them. Replacements as the earth pair hadn’t been able to make it. Ah well, it didn’t bother Mafic in the slightest. True, they had been in their class together, but as Mafic had been more or less busy with a loveable space-head of a rider, he had been more focused on her than to try and remember all their names. But, the introduced themselves properly and Mafic smiled. “It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Mafic and this is Nickolai.” Mafic rumbled. “You can call me Nikki though. Everyone does.” She piped up, looking the other pair down. Nice clothes, good colors. Her mind worked, wondering if there was anything-- “No need to apologize. Mine has been excited about this as well.” While, perhaps not as excited as the Ice, but for probably the same reasons. But Mafic had his apprehensions. It seemed like a simple scouting mission, but it couldn’t help to expect everything and anything. They were travelling quite far from the academy, afterall. At least he had made sure they had packed good. In the bombardment of questions the pair almost missed the question the Ice rider had thrown at them. But Mafic had heard, and now that they had properly introduced each other, he could settle on answering it properly. “A village near the mountains have been having reports of disappearing cattle and reports of a rogue dragon or demons, depending on who you ask, have been cited. We haven’t gotten clear reports of what, but it’s either a dragon or a wyvern. We won’t know officially till we check it out.” Mafic answered honestly. Quick to the point. “It’s about a couple of days flight minimum from here, without too many stops. But we shouldn’t over-tax ourselves to get there.” Mafic responded. While he knew how important this mission was, he was already looking forward to getting back into his nest or sundozing. “Wyverns...aren’t those those...dragon like creatures?” “Yes, but they sentient. And they’re rather dangerous. Whatever it is, there seems to be only one. So Two of us should be sufficient to take care of the problem.” Having given all the information Mafic possessed, He smiled. Now all that was left to do was to get on the way. Perhaps they could camp a tad early and they could rest. “Well, I suppose we should head out then. Unless there is something else you need to do before so? I am all prepared as can be.” Mafic rumbled. “It’ll take some effort for me to get off the ground, so It’d be best if you two got airborne before I did.” The journey to the village, lying near the base of the mountains north of Nyushi passed uneventfully, much to the relief of the Lava dragon. He would have hated for them to have gotten into a fight that impaired them to finish this mission in a timely manner or make it more difficult for the riders. Nikki seemed to get along with the other rider, and the ice pair definitely made the trip better, Ely had such a positive outlook on everything. But as they landed, and approached the small tone, It became quite obvious that something was definitely wrong here. The village, as Nikki slid off her dragon and began to enter, seemed abandoned. However, upon closer and careful observation, the shutters and sometimes doors of the small, simple houses would slightly open or close and occasionally they could see eyes peeking out. Something had them spooked, and the scent of blood soon came up to the Lava’s attention. Going further in, some of the houses looked to have been landed on and crushed by something larger, and the remains of flocks of sheep or goats were huddled in make-shift pens that looked like someone tried to set up pikes and other weapons to deterr something from getting them--though some fortified fences were also smashed--as if they hadn’t done much good. “Looks like something is terrifying the villages.” Nikki whispered as she stared around wide-eyed. She was at a loss. She expected to come into the problem, have it sorted out and then leave. But this required just a bit of detective work before finding out the true cause. They didn’t just want to stumble around and be unprepared. “I”m surprised they’re still here, honestly. Come. Let us see what we can fine. Perhaps we should knock on a door?” Mafic rumbled, every senses on alert. while it seemed calm now, Whatever was attacking the Village could swoop down at any moment--as it looked like it had seen the herds and cattle as easy prey. Nikki nodded, and went to a door and knocked on it, the rapping on the wood loud and seemed to echo off in the eeire silence of the small village. “Er, Hello! We’re dragon riders from the academy sent to help you with uhh your problem? If you could come out and talk, it would be greatly appreciated.” |
