Character Number- 1st

Name- Damascus "Scuzzy" Aubrin

Age- 28

Gender- Female.

Sexuality- Optimistic.

Appearance- Damascus is possibly best likened to a lit match. A fiery redhead with a lean, pale body and steely-blue eyes. Said hair is often worn short all over save for a small rat-tail braid at the back. She sometimes weaves one of Iblis' smaller feathers into for fancy occasions or when the mood strikes her. Depending on the time of year her hair can either be sunbleached a shade or two lighter or it's more natural vibrant rusty red. Her features put one in mind of a young boy rather than a young woman with her modest chest and her wiry frame built from scrambling up and down cliffs and trees and her dragon. Dama's pale skin often sports bruises, scrapes, grazes and scars both healed and still healing. A dark blue-black tattoo is etched into her upper right arm and a small sigil of luck on her left leg. The last is a small circle under her jaw matching the location of the crystal on Iblis. To go with her tatty skin, Dama's clothes are usually equally scuffed, dusty and worn. Unless she's on the job or needs to be in her finest. Then she scrubs up a treat and looks rather dapper for somebody so scrappy. She almost always has a satchel on her with a sketchbook and some pencils or quills.

On the rare occasions that Dama has her hair long it's either worn tight in a small tail or in a thicker braid than her rat-tail, sometimes it might even carry darker streaks of henna dyed in for fun. Often she'll wear tough fingerless leather gloves to allow her to work in colder weather or with rougher objects when she's already worn her palms bare. She doesn't wear jewellery often if at all and the only exception is her bonding crystal, which she keeps in a secure locket around her neck at all times. Her boots are sturdy and often conceal either a small blade or something like a switch-knife to help in every day tasks more than to protect herself. It can however double up as security if it has to be.

Personality- Damascus is as firey as her hair and as resilient as the steel in her eyes. She relishes a challenge and won't say no if there's a worthwhile prize at the end of it. Daring her to do anything often results in it being done amazingly or disastrously until it's complete. She is a ball of energy most of the time and if she's not delivering mail or being a Wing member, she's either up a cliff or a tree to find things to sketch and study. Iblis is usually roped into taking her places to find even more things to draw; often for a sweet reward. This energy only relents when it's burned up and leaves her crashing in her hammock or against Iblis. Beneath her mile-a-minute, do-all-the-things attitude Dama is a caring woman if brash and often a little obnoxious. If her friends need her help, they have it in an instant.

Experiencing the tail-end of the Taint War did have an effect on Dama even if she keeps it bottled up. You don't go through seeing your friends and family, adopted or not, slaughtered or sickened and dying without some change. And for Dama that was the dawning of the realisation that the world was not a playground to be explored. Not everything was to be seen or experienced and some of the things she experienced, life-affirming as they were, she wished she hadn't seen at all. The calm post-war days have given her time to reflect, to recover and to put her experiences to good use helping out new candidates where she can and making sure the youngest are looked after. They're like her own younger siblings and the thought of losing them is a thought that terrifies her.

When asked about her experiences she'll brush them off and try to avoid them, but if you catch her at the right moment she'll most likely inform you that it's wise to be cautious, but not malicious in the presence of Tainted dragons and riders. Not only because they might hurt you, but because they might hurt themselves just as much.

Rank- Academy Guard/Wing Fang/possibly rapid mail service/professional cliff climber

History- Dama's parents would probably have preferred their daughter be a baker. Or a seamstress. Even a blacksmith would do so long as she wasn't throwing herself into constant danger as she had been from a young age. Her father was a carpenter and her mother a tailor who between them had several children, probably explaining Dama's need to outshine them and find her own voice. They were forever pulling her out of the fireplace, out of streams, trees and small holes in rocks. Anywhere that looked interesting was interesting to Dama and she was in there head-first; even moreso if a critter of some sort dove into it first. Though she was constantly clamouring over her siblings to show her parents how awesome she was Damascus didn't ever deliberately step on them. Maybe literally a few times but never with malicious intent. The moment any of her brothers or sisters needed help or was hurt, Dama would scurry to either tell their parents or help keep them out of trouble by rescuing or fixing them herself.

Much to their chagrin, as soon as Dama was able to do so she all but launched herself into the Academy to sign up and help join in the fight against the Taint.

It's here she meets Iblis, the air dragon who greets her partner with a demonstration of how sharp a tiny beak and tiny teeth are. Dama was initially anxious about what sort of dragon she was going to get and originally hoped for a fire, or maybe something more exotic. However, when the frizzy yellow pipecleaner bundle finally decided to waddle over and bite her on the leg for attention, she wasn't all that disappointed. Iblis may have been a fuzzy noodle but she was spunky, bitey and wasn't taking no or any argument for an answer.

From then on, Iblis has pushed her rider to be the best she possibly could be. And not a moment too soon as the Academy is lost shortly there after. Damascus doesn't really speak about what happened during those few dark years, preferring to dwell on the War-less now rather than mull over things that have been. Suffice to say in the years since her Candidacy, Damascus and Iblis have become a magnificent pair of flyers in their own right which Dama capitolised on by hiring themselves out as a delivery team to help pay for their way at the Academy when they're not hanging around.

Name- Iblis

Age- 15

Gender- Female

Element- Air

Appearance-

Simply put, Iblis was practically born to fly. Her whole body reads "flight" from her beaked head to her forked, plumed tail. Her body in it's most basic description is that of a generic large dromaeosaur (you can use old Utahraptor reconstructions or potentially Achillobator) but more drawn out and deepened a touch. Remove the sickle claws, add some structured feathers to the lower leg and an extra finger to the hands and that's your starting point. Now, add on a feathered version of Hatzegopteryx's forelimbs infront of the arms and more conventional, clawed bird wings just before her hindlimbs and you get the very basic body of Iblis. To get even more specific, her tail terminates in a strongly forked fan of feathers that are longest on the outside, shortest on the inside. From between them trail two pennant feathers that end in fan-shapes. Her wings have an impressive, narrow, pointed span similar to falcons or other fast-flying, agile birds like skuas or frigatebirds; the secondary wings serving as additional steerage. The large, powerful forelimbs are, along with her hindlimbs, what propel her skywards in a quadrupedal launch. At the top of the "wrist" of each wing is a sturdy, strongly curved claw that aids her in climbing and clinging. The bottom of the same part of the wing has two padded and taloned toes that support her.

Iblis's face is reminiscent of a Lammergeier (bearded vulture) save for the series of tusked protrusions and her prominent prow-chin. The larger of the beak-tusks curves downward like a scimitar just behind her nares, resting between the other two on her lower jaw in a special groove. Sharp, gripping teeth line the inside of her maw. Her eyes are a vivid, summer-sky blue with a dark sclera and pupil. Her scraggily-crested head is gingery-gold on top fading to a light cream underneath with some darker stripes on her breast and her undersides. The upper feathers of her wings are a dark sepia brown edged with cream; the secondaries flashing iridescent blue. Black masks her eyes and flows down infront of them, over her lower jaw and the beard of feathers that hangs under her chin. It also continues behind her eyes, sweeping back and up into two rather elegant wispy black tufts. Her ears are miniature wings in themselves, though they have no joints at all save where they attach to her head. They can prick up, flatten back, flap and function as both ears and head stabilisers in flight.

When freshly moulted her golden feathers are rich and vibrant and have a shine to them; though this colour does dull down after a few months until her next moult.

Personality-

Iblis has earned her name from the very beginning. Since her hatching she has been a bossy, dominant dragon whose main goals in life seem to be being the most impressive Air to exist and making sure that everyone knows it. That required a lot more effort and energy than she was willing to part with however; so as a compromise she settled for advocating only the best in students, riders, chefs, gardeners... anyone around her able to be judged, was done so. And brought up to snuff if they lacked.

Iblis is rather aloof and hard-shouldered most of the time; you'd be better off having a conversation with the back end of a sleeping Earth dragon if you're new to her or haven't ever spoken before. She doesn't have time for those who don't seem worth it and won't waste it unless it's to remind them that they're disturbing her nap and she has very sharp fangs. Her attitude to hatchlings and the young is similar, though less intense as they need to learn and what better teacher is there than somebody with a lot of knowledge to give. Even if she doesn't pamper and is more of a harsh mistress than a Victorian headmaster. That is however not to say Iblis lacks a soft side. She has a soft side the same way a granite boulder has a soft side; from years and years of moss and lichen growing on it. If you've been around long enough and don't tolerate her bullshit, Iblis will gradually accept you as somebody she can trust and rely on. This is of course a great honour and you must never sully it with bragging or mentioning it publicly, of course.
