The sun hung low in the sky as evening fell over the bit of beach that covered the southern side of the continent. Up north the weather was turning cold. It was getting colder by the day. Already frost came creeping on silent toes to try and grope at what crops had yet to be harvested. Up north people bundled in warmer clothes to fight off the nip in the air and readied for winter. This far south, however, the weather did not even hint at cold, nor would it ever. The wind that came off the ocean was cool, but the water was warm. Shore birds picked their way along the rocks which the low tide had exposed, looking for crabs and other small meals. Gulls screamed in the sky at the intruders to their private scrap of beach.

Liam walked by himself near the water. He picked at shells as he wandered near the small leather saddle which Audere had begged him to remove. The dragoness was right, he did not want it coated in salt and damaging. He had nearly turned down the paper air that morning when she had woken him at the crack of dawn, but he had promised her he would leave the academy for a few days and take a break from his studies. Once more she was right. He hadn’t left the walls of the academy in two months; he hadn’t seen anyone except her and the dragoness was very justifiably bored. He could not blame her. The life of research was not for everyone.

She had insisted he travel somewhere warmer with her. She hadn’t asked, she had demanded. The pair had never gotten along well. They were complete opposites, but Audere cared deeply for him. If there was one thing she understood it was that he was not like her. He did not thrive on adventure and new experiences. He thrived on knowing first and then doing. Which seemed so dull and methodical. Liam had always been stern and focused on his work. He had hoped to bond to a fire, or an earth, something heavy that he ride like some great war machine into battle. Instead he got the only sekkain air to ever be born without a single feather. She was tiny, and fragile looking. Like origami brought to life. Even her vast wings were covered bright green which hung very much like feathers.

The air pranced about fifty feet down the beach splashing in the surf. Tiny red feet left impressions in the sand as she jumped the white swell with just a slight flick of her wings to give her a bit more lift. The wave dissolved her tracks in a quick sweep. Where she did not have bulk she made up for in blinding speed in the air and that was something Liam had never recognized. Right now the unbelievably thin dragoness snapped at small fish in the wake and bounced over waves, snickering to herself.

Liam was less amused. He stayed near the saddle, and his attached halberd. His meal for the day was in the saddle bags along with the bedroll on which he intended to sleep when night fell. For now he let Audere wander and tried to enjoy the good weather. It was nice to be warm outside, but at the same time he had been deep in his research about crystal formation and the strength of bonds. Information that seemed like it could save lives if the taints ever started breaking crystals again.

With a heaved sigh he dropped down onto the sand and watched his dragon leap and glide her way after darting fish and tried to forget his work. There would be time when they got back to the academy. There was nothing, but time in these peaceful moments between war. Audere was right. He needed a break. He needed some time to let his mind rest and cease its endless swirling thoughts. This area was beautiful. She had not lied, and slowly, as the minutes past, he let go of his need to continue his studies and did his best to just enjoy the moment.

The tainted pair were teasingly close to the Sekkaians. They usually didn't venture this far east, let alone during the day, but Pitch hungered to find Baptiste again. Their last run in left a sour taste in his mouth, the taste of defeat. It was one he didn't often get; normally he finds a target, and if they get away it is because Pitch wants them to, wants them to feel that false sense of security then see their face as it all comes crashing down. But Baptiste... Baptiste had gotten away because of Phears blunder. Pitch had forgiven his dear companion but he was still bitter over it. And he would not stop until he found Baptiste and finished his job.

Phear however, was in a different state of mind. Pitch had noticed he seemed a bit more... jovial than average, but he had not asked what for. Phear wouldn't have told him even if he did ask; his meetings with the small air female were in secret, and if Pitch found out well... It may not end well. No, it would not end well, there was no 'may' about it. He hoped, being so close to the Academy, he could slip away and find her himself for more time together, as he enjoyed her company far more than Pitch. He was growing to loose favor of his own rider in some ways. But he was still loyal to the man.

"Phear, there, on the beach," Pitch called over the wind as they flew. Echos pinged over the forms on the beach, too far away to distinguish between a large form - a dragon - and a much smaller form - a human. "An air and its rider, lets go have some fun shall we? Give the Sekkaians a little hello."

Phear rumbled in agreement, a wicked grin pulling onto his face. He tucked in half of his wings and angled downwards. Pulling his legs in, he became a black bullet, headed straight for the beach, a disorienting technique. He pulled his wings open nearly last second, slamming into the beach and using his force and his powers to whip up the sands into a flurry. He roared, an earth shattering sound layered with sonic overtones as the sand began to settle, Pitch sliding off and moving towards the human while Phear turned towards the dragoness.

The sand settled. His echolocation became clear. It was Audere...

Audere lashed her tiny paw at a small shimmering fish under the water and it darted away. With a chuckle she pranced after it, long legs high stepping through the waves. The refraction kept the poor fish ahead of her until it darted towards deeper water, finally escaping her stamping. “Darn.” She snipped and pranced her way back to shore. She paused and then shook sending salty water everywhere. Pale purple eyes flicked around the beach and she twitched her whip like tail. “No dinner yet Liam!” She chattered, as if she honestly expected to catch enough of the small fish to feed them both. If she was actually trying the female could dive very well and catch plenty of fish a little further out, big enough to feed the pair of them. Her current game. Not so much.

Very abruptly her long ears flicked up around her straight horns. The larger crimson scales along her neck flattened, blending paper like into her neck. She stood stiff and still except for those large ears which flicked this way and that, tracking something just out of sight. “Liam? I hear something!” She called out loudly.

And then the disruption fell like a comet out of the heavens. Her eyes widened as the sand flew in a whirl of wings. Her own pairs expanded, ready to take flight, but her attention flew to Liam. The boy was on the far side of the pair, a good couple hundred feet from her. Her head darted back to their attacker and she tensed. There was Phere, a dragon who she had come to call friend, despite their differences. On his back however, was a rider she did not recognize but had to assume was Pitch himself. Panic raced through her as she darted as wide as she could around them, bolting back towards her rider. She had to protect Liam.

The boy bolted for the saddle where it lay on the beach as soon as the taints landed. He didn’t bother to get a good look at them right away. Instead he went for his halberd, yanking the weapon free of the thin leather saddle. He whirled around to stare into the face of a disruption. His hand tightened on his weapon. “Audere I need you here!” He shouted. His eyes flashed over to the green female as she bolted on tiny paws towards him. There was too much distance. He wanted to fight, to show this taint they picked the wrong human. Instead he bolted for one of the rocks that jutted out of the sand and made to dodge behind it. There was a time to fight, and there was a time to defend yourself. Now was the later. He was nothing against the force of a dragon and its rider without his partner.

For a moment, Phear hesitated. It was Audere, it was his friend. Oh, how the fates were laughing cruely at him now. Of course he couldn't have this! It was to good for a blind wretch like himself, a true friend... Pitch was paying him no mind, sauntering over to the human in a casual pace. His bright eyes flickered to the air who was running to the human, and he yelled over his shoulder, "Take care of her, Phear!" Phear rumbled and ran forward. She had speed on her side, but he had size, his strides matching 4 of hers until he skidded in front of her, wings flared. But he didn't use his magic, worried about hurting her. Instead he loosed a fearsome roar, at least to show Pitch he was making an effort to halt her.

"I'm sorry," He said in a low voice. Were he able to manifest emotion on his thick face, there would be concern, apologies written in his scale.

Pitch laughed jovially as the young rider grabbed his halberd before darting behind a jutting rock on the beach to act as shield.

"Oh come now, little one," He called out, still continuing his all to at ease pace towards him. "Didn't you train for months to face something like me, hmm? And yet you take the route of a coward, tsk, tsk... A shame what the sekkaians have become..."

While Phear kept the dragoness busy, he could easily take his time with this one. Disarm him, corner him, maim him... Maybe even kill him. Or taint him. The legion needed more cannon fodder of course. He raised his arms to draw his scythes, contemplating a role of action. A halberd had reach, but it was a slow moving weapon. If Pitch was fast, he could get in between the weapon and the boy without much work.

Pitch spun around the rock where the boy was hiding, spinning the scythes in his hands and raising them to defend any incoming attacks before pivoting on his heel to attempt a blow to his right arm.
