Name: Dikeledi Sabeen

Age: 29

Gender: Female

Sexuality: Flexible

Appearance: Like many in Sekkai, Sabeen's body has been shaped by the life she's lead. When she was young, hunger made her thin and bony. When hunger left her and she grew, she grew strong through training with her aunt and the other wyrmlings. The weight she put back on was all corded muscle and sinew. Now a grown woman, Sabeen is tough and leathery and strong. Her body is an instrument she has honed to brutal perfection. She is lean, with not an ounce of spare flesh on her bones. Her face is striking; high, sharp cheekbones, plush lips and a strong jaw. She has piercing, high-angled black eyes under thin, high-arched black brows, almost constantly fixed into an intense, fierce stare. She keeps her hair tightly twined into many long, tiny braids tipped with beads of metal, ceramic, and glass. Though she favors simple clothing: sleeveless linen tunics, knee-length pants, sandals and sash, she carries herself like a queen. Her manner and bearing command respect, and she uses every inch of her considerable height of six feet. Her manner can be almost feral and predatory at times, her movements catlike, graceful, and precise. No more the hungry, frightened, angry girl of her youth, life has forged her into a hardened, self-assured warrior. There is one exception to her plain dress - Sabeen's aunt is a talented seamstress, and makes exquisitely embroidered vests for her niece to wear. She also made a collar which Sabeen is never without - it is richly embellished with intricate beading and embroidery of many vivid colors, surrounding a rich purple shard-like stone streaked with turquoise. The stone is, of course, Sabeen's crystal.

Shiny pink scar tissue stripes and mottles her dark skin. Some scars are faded and old, nearly-invisible mementos of long-ago fights. Some are new and angrier reminders of fresher pains. Her once-proud, thin bladed nose has been broken many times, and is now a misshapen approximation of itself - still thin and proud, but somewhat more crooked and knobby than it started out. Her left hand had been crushed at one point; some fingers healed crooked, and as she's aged, the knuckles of both hands have been toughened into tough cudgels of cartilage and bone, and begun to ache at times. Of all these physical scars and old wounds, the most profound is the invisible: Sabeen is deaf. The hearing loss is not total (she can hear noises if they're loud enough, though generally speaking only her dragon is able to produce such sounds); the speech of dragons tends to be audible though muffled and distorted, sometimes to the point of incomprehensibility. Human speech is simply too quiet to hear.

Thirty years of being bonded to a Sonic dragon have taken their toll on Sabeen's hearing. It was a gradual degradation, and she has since learned a variety of skills to compensate for the loss. For one, she has learned to read lips, which sometimes gives her a vaguely distracted appearance - she rarely makes eye contact with someone if they are talking to her, focusing instead on their mouths. She also is fluent in both the Dragonsign and Standardsign languages, as well as morse code and semaphore. Additionally, her wing has developed a system of communication involving semaphore modified as hand signs, and various shorthand gestures to facilitate field communication. She usually carries a wax tablet and stylus, in case someone who is not proficient in any sign language needs to communicate with her.

Sabeen's hearing loss has hampered her ability to gauge her own voice. Though she can still speak clearly and precisely, because she has no way of judging ambient noise, she may well speak at a volume inappropriately loud or quiet for the situation at hand. Although she has no problems speaking when necessary, she has fallen into the habit of supplementing her speech with sign language and expressive gestures to ensure that she is getting her point across.

Personality: Sabeen has always had a fiery temper; she came by her given name - Pipra, meaning 'peppery' - honestly. She is quite resilient; though she's lived through harrowing tragedy, she has the strength of character and thirst for vengeance necessary to carry her through. When her parents and brothers were killed, she took the name 'Dikeledi' -tears- in remembrance. She's grown since then; she keeps the name in honor of her family, and also the friends and loves she's lost since, but the hurts have faded to familiar aches over time. The fiery passion has settled into quiet, hot embers of hate.

Dikeledi hates the Taint with a depth of rage that cannot be assuaged. In her eyes, even if healed, those once Tainted can never remove the stain of the deeds that they've done. Though the law forbids her from killing those so healed, she begrudges them their lives. She can never accept or forgive them.

Sabeen has a sharp mind, and a pragmatic worldview. She has little patience for stupidity and frivolity, and can have a tart tongue when annoyed. She's always had an expressive face, and since losing her hearing, it has only become moreso. She respects strength, and has slowly come to learn that appearance can be deceiving - soft doesn't always mean weak, physical strength can sometimes hide a weak mind or will. Though she makes quick judgments when meeting people, she also readily and constantly re-evaluates those judgement.

Sabeen is ferocious in a fight, and can be somewhat intimidating to those who lack her innate self-assurance. Indeed; she doesn't have the patience for most people, and has gotten used to being alone, with none but her aunt for company. There is a comfort in knowing another person as well as you know yourself; they're a good team and have spent decades taking on the world as a pair. Her aunt was incredibly proud of her Pipra (as she has never stopped calling her) when she bonded with a dragon, and promptly formally adopted Decibel as a niece in the custom of her people. At Decibel's hatching, Sabeen claimed Decibel as a sister, and through her, claimed Temyst, Ghost, and their kin as family, also. Though she doesn't go out of her way to interact with her dragon kin, she is always willing to provide them any aid if needed. She fiercely defends the good things in her life, and regards outsiders with suspicion - as possible threats until and unless proven otherwise.

Rank: Wing Scale (no IC wing)

History: Sabeen hails from the Zavan Plains. Her mother was a member of one of the nomadic tribes who abandoned the old ways and settled down with a farmer. Her aunt kept to the old ways, traveling with her husband and their goats; always on the move for good grazing. They would blow into town every once in a while, and when they did, Sabeen would travel with them for a few weeks. Her education was split; she learned to farm and barter from her mother and father, and to sew, tie knots, and fight in defense of her family and herd from her aunt and uncle. Her mother's people believed in the equitable division of work between men and women, because there is always more than enough to go around.

She was with her aunt and uncle when they got word that her home had been attacked. Knowing there was nothing left there for her, they continued the nomadic lifestyle even as the plains became overrun by Tainted. They posed no threat, so as long as they kept away from hungry ones, they weren't specifically attacked, though their herd dwindled away to nothing. It quickly became too dangerous to stay in their homeland, though, so they made their way slowly east. Her uncle was killed in an attack, but she and her aunt escaped. Eventually, they made it safe to Lihn. Sabeen's aunt found work with a textile guild, and eventually was able to rebuild their herd.

Dikeledi stood candidate at the first possible opportunity. She was chosen by the sonic Decibel. She considers Bel to be her little sister (no matter how big she's grown), and her sister's kin to be her own. She made it her duty to ensure her sister grew up strong, and grow strong Decibel did. Upon completion of their training as Wyrmlings, Decibel and Sabeen volunteered to be buglers with the wing that they would one day join as full fledged Scales. As buglers, they called out the Talon's commands to the rest of the wing. Together they gained first-hand battlesky experience, and exceptional fluency in a variety of communication systems. It was during their time as buglers that Decibel honed her talent for mimicry and locational volume control, and Sabeen discovered her knack for picking up languages.

--Roleplay History:
-In the kitchen, before the hatching
-Decibel's hatching
-Post-hatching feeding
-sparring with Miel

Pet(s): If asked, she will deny it, but she has grown fond of a specific goat from her aunt's herd. If asked what the goat's name is, she will reply, "Food."

Relationships:
--Ekundayo Ime - Sabeen's maternal aunt and only living blood relative. The two are extremely close
--Colette Toumani - Wyrmling roomate and friend; have lost touch lately
--Tempyst and Ghost - the parents of her dragon sister, who Sabeen has claimed as kin

Sabeen has few friends, more through disinterest than anything else. She finds it difficult to relate to people, and most people don't make it past her initial assessing phase. As far as she's concerned, she has her aunt and her dragon, and those are the two most important people in the world. Should she never add anyone else to her inner circle, she would be just fine with them. She has taken lovers in the past (both male and female), but for one reason or another - distrust, disinterest, death - it's never worked out for very long. She's not opposed to making new friends or loves, but she is acutely aware that each person she allows close to her has the potential to hurt.

Appearance: X, X
From her hatching:

Quote:

Eventually, the egg began to resonate, shattering like many sonics hatch, though with noticeably less shrapnel. The hatchling that revealed itself was surprisingly bulky, even for a sonic. Her purple crystal rested above her right eye, in a haphazard contrast to her brothers, whose rested beneath his left. Her scales were a darker green than her brothers, with golden spirals curling to and fro across her form, making her round shape seem yet even more round. Faint turquoise striations ran like veins across the top of everything else, though they faded away if not viewed closely.

For all that she could be a beautiful artwork, her stumpy form, and already obnoxious behavior seemed to cancel it all out, as she yawned, tired by her efforts to free herself from the shell. It was quite obvious she would much prefer to remain right where she was, and fall asleep, save for the most aggravating feeling, as if her belly wanted to turn inside out and devour her. Eventually, the feeling became annoying enough to spur her to more action, and she slowly lumbered towards the candidates, spotting her bonded simply because she didn't want to have to go wandering through the crowd for half an eternity. She wanted food, and she wanted food now.

Plopping herself down in front of her chosen, she looked up, making an unpleasant grunt. "You must be mine. I'm Decibel, I'm your dragon, and I'm hungry. You wouldn't mind carrying me to the food, would you? Of course you wouldn't. You're my rider, after all, and your dragon is hungry. So. I want food, and I want it now."

Decibel is on the big side for a sonic, measuring out at a full 54 feet long from nose to tail tip. She's stocky and muscular, with a sturdy square body and broad-set forelegs making room for a massive lung capacity. Her hind legs are longer and slimmer than her bulky shoulders, making her natural stance slope-backed, splay-legged, and exceptionally stable. Her wings are broad and sweeping, lending themselves to long periods of stable gliding, but with only adequate speed and relatively poor maneuverability. Her neck is comparatively short; the apparent stumpiness it is exaggerated by the folds of loose skin hanging from her throat. This wattling can be inflated; the resultant air sac is independent from her main respiratory system which allows her to breath normally while the sac is inflated. The air sac is used to force a huge volume of air at a constant rate through her pipes and horns, producing loud, sustained notes.

As a Sonic dragon, Decibel has a variety of physical structures that allow her to create and control sound. Her spiraling, flared horns have tough secondary vocal cords in their bases. The bell-shaped openings amplify the vibration, and each set of vocal cords is able to be independently controlled. Long, straight spines called pipes extend along the back of her neck to her withers, and are connected directly to the auditory respiratory system. Each pipe has a unique pitch which can be modulated independently via muscular restriction of the airway. The pipes can be played selectively. Starting behind her wings and extending midway down her tail are a second set of spines called flutes; these are also hollow, but unlike the pipes, they are not connected to the respiratory system. Instead, air flows along the irregular holes, depressions, and openings to produce sound. Directed airflow is also the means of sound production for the buzzers, which are a specialized type of tail spine that begins where the flutes end and run the remaining length of the tail. They are comparatively thin, and bent at the tip, with a membrane running along the trailing edge. The membrane is offset, which causes it to buzz and hum when air rushes over it. Decibel has seven round patches of tough membrane and dense muscle in a line down each side of her throat. Additionally, she has three larger, irregularly shaped patches on each flank; they are largest near her forelegs and become gradually smaller as they get farther away. These patches are the tweeters and woofers; a system of muscle and membrane that vibrates, producing sound at very high and very low frequencies.

Her scales are smooth, cool jade, mottled with subtle darker and lighter tones of emerald and turquoise. Threaded through the jade are marbled strands of gold, swirling markings. Her sonic structures are gold, and her membranes are the pale, yellow-green of a new leaf. Her claws are deep emerald, and the sensitive pads of her feet are pale green. Her foot-pads and wing membranes help her detect sound waves in the ground and air, respectively.

Personality: Pugnacious, Belligerent, Lazy

When she was young, Decibel was the most obnoxious little brat ever hatched. She was lazy and stubborn and rude, and thought nothing of throwing a fit to get her own way. Sabeen was often at her wits' end trying to convince her to do even the most minor of things. She has grown since then - she no longer fights Sabeen on every little thing. After years of pounding them into her stubborn brain, Sabeen was able to teach Bel her manners (and more impressively, convince her to mind them - for the most part). She's more mature and responsible, and she knows when to be serious and concentrate on the task at hand.

For all that she's grown, she hasn't lost all of her childish qualities. She is still very stubborn, and although she doesn't always deliberately seek out fights, she certainly doesn't back down from one. Though she begrudgingly understands the importance of training, she would much rather lounge about sunning herself than put herself through the exertions that her sister (ever the stern taskmaster) demands. She can be playful and petty and sweet and loving and obnoxious, too. Still, for all her unpleasant qualities, Decibel is devoted to her sister, and would do absolutely anything to protect and defend her. She also has a surprising level of respect for Sabeen's aunt, Ekundayo Ime, and will fulfill any request made by her adoptive aunt with no question or complaint.

Decibel's key element allows her to produce and control a wide range of sounds. She's a talented mimic, and is easily distracted by novel sounds to replicate. After hearing a sound once (or if it's tricky, perhaps a small handful of times), she can usually figure out how to replicate it exactly. She can also manipulate sound waves to throw her voice, making sounds appear centered on a point other than herself. She uses this ability to pass along her Talon's orders among her wing, and to communicate with Sabeen. She can suppress and cancel sound waves, too, although she is not as adept at stealth as many other Sonic dragons. Sabeen is a much more bombastic personality, and as such is better at the louder end of the scale: she wields sound as a weapon. Her favorite trick is to direct concussive blasts of sound towards a flying enemy to disrupt their flight.

When Sabeen first began to lose her hearing, Decibel felt excruciating guilt. Despite knowing that deafness was not uncommon in Sonic riders, and despite the fact that Sabeen never once blamed her or complained, Decibel knew that she'd taken something from her sister that could never be given back. That guilty knowledge has made her more co-operative than she was in her youth. Though she still bickers with Sabeen for the entertainment it gives them both, she will almost always capitulate to her sister's requests (but will never willingly admit the reason).
