Flying was an experience that Niki could not explain. As the world fell away so did the fears which bound her on the ground. Somehow the sky offered solutions to problems that writhed like serpents in her gut. The wind caught in her throat and the sun blazed against her skin. She might burn but she did not care as she laid in the leather saddle. The heavy beat of her partner’s wings became her slow and steady heartbeat. The small woman lived for these flights. They brought clarity to her mind and eased the tension in her breast. It was freeing. Ekhi tilted her wings and began their decent. Her sun streaked form blazed like a dusky streak in the twilight that so mirrored her form. She twitched her claws and stretched her limbs. It had been a while since they had taken some time just to fly. She had drifted higher then she usually did, a particularly fair thermal had granted an easy ascension. A river snaked it’s way towards the east and far from the safety of the academy. Violet eyes scouted the ground below for a good place to land. When you were as large as she was it became more difficult to choose a good patch to land. The river cut wide through the trees on a slow turn to the north before it would snake back to the east further on. The bank here was wide and she determined it good enough. “Hold on my chosen.” Her voice bit through the wind and she angled her wings to dip downwards. The landing was smooth and done with much more ease then she had once expressed when she was younger. It was lucky she had inherited the grace of her mother over the awkwardness of her father. Her wings flared back and she dropped to the shore to settle there contently. Nikita hopped up from the saddle and with a little help from the celestial made her way to the bank as well. “Is-is this where we will ha-have-have lunch?” She asked calmly. Brown eyes peered up from under messy hair. The dragoness breathed out slowly and nodded. “This is good.” She gently and she gently unhooked the small ridding saddle from its straps with a large claw. The pair had found an easy to harness alternative that together they could get onto her back without assistance. The war saddle was a different story. Nikita helped to pull it aside before the great golden dragoness slid into the river. Autumn leaves drifted around her in the eddies like tiny dancers as she eased herself into the deeper parts. Nikita unpacked her own lunch quietly on the shore. Her gaze followed the dragon lovingly. The whispers around the academy were becoming unsettling, but this was peaceful. She wished desperately things could be like this forever. These precious moments suspended in time with Ekhi lazily swiping at fish as they passed her claws and her feeling peaceful on the shore. |

In the openness of the clearing around him Damien stretched leisurely and relished in the view of the forest around him. Thoroughly entrenched in autumn the place was a sight to behold. Trees dyed all manner of shades provided a colorful backdrop as he took a deep breath and savored the fresh air in his lungs. It had been a long week for him and Bucha. In between running drills and covering patrols the Lightning pair was long overdue for a bit of rest and relaxation. When the opportunity for such came around Damien had opted to head away from the Academy for once and hunt Bucha elsewhere, figuring that the wilderness would be a nice change of pace to their normal routine. Even though they had spent years there on their own, there were still parts they had never bothered to explore before. As it was they had opted to settle down for a bit of lunch, and at the thought Damien's stomach clearly reminded him that his body demanded sustenance. Bucha, for her part, was already occupied with her meal of a doe she had felled only minutes before. Giving the dragoness her space, Damien headed over to the fallen log where he had placed her saddle. After rummaging through his things for a bit he came upon the wrapped parcel he had made specifically for the trip. Sitting down by their gear, he unwrapped the package pulled his knife from its sheath in his boot. He hadn't packed much, just a small loaf of bread, some cured ham, and a wedge of cheese. Cutting himself a slice of the bread, he popped a small piece in his mouth and set the rest of his meal aside. As he brushed stray crumbs from his lap he found his lone eye wandering back towards Bucha. She had slowed in her eating and pretty soon she wouldn't want any more of the fresh meat. “Don't forget to move that somewhere before we leave.” He reminded. Normally, he wouldn't advocate eating anywhere near where they planned to rest. Even though Bucha could full well take on any predator in the area, it was still a hassle to do so and an unnecessary risk for them to take. Swallowing another chunk, Bucha's bright tongue swept over her muzzle and cleared it of any gore. “I won't.” She promised simply. She would probably leave it underneath one of the trees nearby, far enough away from where they were, but close enough that some other animal could easily snatch up the remains. Snorting softly, the Lightning retreated away from the carcass and sat down to begin preening herself. While she was normally a very neat eater she couldn't keep all the blood and gore from her body. She started with her claws first, her bright tongue swiping over them until they were their normal bright yellow color once again. “So, do you really think this will be my year?” She asked cautiously, hoping to continue their conversation from the flight over. The inquiry earned her a small smile from Damien, who nodded his head twice in affirmation. “Of course, dear. Your cycle has had more than enough time to adjust.” He reminded her. While Flight season was still a ways away, the speculative undercurrent was certainly there. Bucha was no stranger to the urge herself, and he could understand her desire to give in to it. The former Taint shifted in his seat as he felt a pang of apprehension from the female. “I just... I can't help but wonder if there's something wrong with me you know?” She confessed quietly. “After everything that's happened... what if there's a problem that I can't fix?” She questioned. Sighing heavily, Bucha cast her pale eyes upward towards the afternoon sky in thought. “Nonsense,” Damien said quickly, flipping his knife in his hand. He caught the tip between his fingers and pointed the handle straight at his Lightning. “Everything will be fine Bucha, you don't need to worry. This isn't the Desolation, things are better here.” Turning back to his lunch, he stole a piece of cured ham and nibbled on it slowly, all the while keeping his eye on his Lightning. A child would be good for Bucha, he thought. It would give her something else to focus on, something else to love that wasn't him. Any response that the Lightning might have given was cut off by a large shadow darkening the skies overhead. Damien had been in the process of cutting himself another slice when he looked up and saw the hulking form of a Celestial overhead. A whistle of appreciation left his lips as the female landed, her form large and bright compared to their surroundings. Piling a few slices of ham on his soon-to-be sandwich the Lightning rider reached over and shook his canteen. The swishing sound was a bit quieter than he would have liked, so he stuck his knife back in his boot and started to make his way towards the river. As he passed Bucha he gestured for her to follow him. “Curious?” She asked as she trailed behind him. Her own pale eyes had settled on the golden female, and in a small part of her mind she wondered if Damien thought she was the prettier creature out of the two of them. “Nah, just thirsty.” He replied. “Besides, you still have blood on your face and it would be rude of us if we didn't greet our fellow pair.” He said with a slight smirk. While he normally didn't care overly much about propriety Damien admitted that it was good practice to keep it up occasionally. As they reached the river Ekhi had begun to leisurely move about, but Damien still filled his canteen nonetheless. Coming back up onto the bank, he left Bucha to quench her thirst and clean her face while he approached the Celestial pair. He stayed a respectful distance from the rider, instead choosing to wave his hand at her. “Hey there!” He called in polite greeting. |

Ekhi didn’t bother with the fish which darted around her in flickering streaks except to disturb their path. Unlike her companion she was not as adjusted of the stillness. The calm which came to her partner while the world was turning around them did not sit so well in her. They were warriors. Nikita was whether she assumed so or not, the starlit celestial would not have chosen her otherwise. Niki had ferocity in her blood, though her family left something to be wanting they were all skilled in battle. Niki was the best of them, but she let her fears restrain her progress. Ekhi longed to join a wing, but Nikita was stalling. The woman claimed to be weighing her options. There was no weighing, no one knew Niki’s heart like the twilit celestial. The dragoness hungered for training. She wanted to work with a wing. To learn to hone her craft better. The indecision was hard to shoulder some days. She loved her chosen so deeply it was easy to forgive her short comings, but she would not let others race off to battle and not lend her talons. They would have to find common ground soon. Movement caught her eye upriver. Her slender snout turned and her jaws parted a fraction. The specks of false starlight along her sides flickered and brightened against the indigo that traced her spine. Hot white light forced its way through her teeth in small glistening beams. Precautions, always precautions. She would not be caught unaware and alone as they were now. In this instance there was nothing to fear. The pair was Sekkain, she had seen them from time to time around the academy. She was too young to know their history, which allowed them some anonymity that they usually were not afforded. “We are not alone.” Ekhi breathed softly and gestured to the lightning pair with a paw. The blaze between her jaws dispersed and she relaxed again. She did not bother to rise from her place, which signaled her trust as they approached. Nikita diverted her attention from the small pouch of nuts and dried berries she had been pulling from a saddle bag. Her eyes widened at the lightening dragoness. She was a riot of color and was hard to look away from. All darkness and sudden jolts of light. But It was the man she recognized. She had to struggle for his name, it had been the better part of a year since they had met. He had asked her to dance and had been so kind to her, yet when she was anxious things like names became hard to hold. He had been skillful and slipped her away to let her calm down. He had made her forget for a moment that she was trapped in a throng of people at the party. Ekhi had been young then. Now she was still small for her breed, but she outstripped the lightning by many feet. Excitement lit her face as she set hopped up to greet her fellow rider. She finally caught the name from her frantic mind and it sprung past her lips like a locust from the hand. “D-d-damion!” Her voice bounced across the short space much louder then intended and the bluster went out of her. She turned deep red and retreated under her curtain of hair. Her fingers dug tighter into the rough leather pouch in her hands. “I-I-I’m sorry.” She burst out much more quietly before he could get a word in, “I-I-I don’t-don’t know if-if-if-if you remember me.” It was always so much work getting through a sentence. Like she was fighting through a strong current and having to force each syllable past her lips. She could feel Ekhi’s presence, but she couldn’t reach out to stroke the feathers on her wings, which usually was how she soothed herself. “We-we danced once.” She said even softer, trying to recover from the wave of embarrassment that suddenly descended on her in a crashing wave. She was supposed to be a celestial rider, a great and mighty warrior of the highest caliper. The kind of woman who demanded respect. Yet even with all her training and lessons, interaction was a constant struggle. Ekhi lowered her head to observe the man a little closer. “Oh yes this is him. Pleasure to see you again. I do not believe we had the honor of meeting your bonded partner at our last introduction. I am Ekhi and this is my chosen Nikita, what carries the two of you out this far from our mutual home? We weren’t expecting to meet others on our little excursion.” She breezed. It was in part to introduce herself, and in part to take some of the spotlight off the small woman. Beside the Celestial she was truly dwarfed, and the somewhat loose clothing made the illusion worse. The dragoness had found that if she began conversations usually it made things easier for them both. |

The Lightning female hardly bothered to glance at her rider as he walked away to greet the other pair. Instead, she dipped her muzzle in the cool river and let the water wash away the blood that stained her dark scales. With a few helpful swipes of her tongue she managed to get off all the residue that had caked on, though in the end she still swept her paw across her face for good measure. She absolutely hated it when anything got caught between her scales. Now that she was clean though, Bucha drew her head up to her full height and looked at Damien and the other pair. She was perfectly fine with letting him handle the introductions. She didn't particularly care if they wanted to talk to her or not, but if they did she would be polite and go along with it. It wasn't often that Damien decided to be proactively social after all, and she wouldn't impede him if they chose to include her. As the rider approached he found his lone eye once again drawn towards the towering Celestial. She was a vibrant creature, patterned after his own heart, but where Bucha was as dark as night Ekhi was as bright as day. A rich, amaranthine hue was painted across her back, and he found his gaze attracted to the points of light that emanated from her horns. His appraisal, however, was brought to an abrupt end by a nearby shout. Nikita's voice rang clearly across the space between them, and Damien felt his eyebrows arch in surprise as he turned towards the source. He watched silently as the Celestial rider caught herself, and though he was too far away to see her redden with embarrassment, he listened through the stutter and caught her explanation. She was mostly right in her assumption that he didn't remember her. A part of him felt as if he had encountered her before, but he couldn't place anything beyond that vague sense of familiarity. At any rate, he wasn't perturbed at all by the fact that she remembered him. He tended to be a rather noticeable figure these days, either because of the fact that he was a former Taint, or because he was missing an eye. Though, as the Celestial rider carried on Damien felt something click in his mind. When she described the circumstances of their encounter the pieces of recognition finally settled into place. Yes, they had met, almost two years ago now. That had been around the time of his arrival at the Academy, it was no wonder he didn't remember her. Everything from back then was a blur. From simply trying to adjust to his healed bond, to being tossed back into society at large, the only thing he'd wanted to do was settle down and accept that things were going to be better. To accept that he and Bucha were going to be alright. Damien's lips spread in a keen smile as he nodded his head. He had never been much for large social functions, so the moment she mentioned the fact that they had danced easily narrowed down the possibilities. “I remember now.” He recalled. It had been the Festival of Rebirth, the one that Bucha had forced him to go to. Unfortunately, even with that information the rider's name still managed to elude his conscious grasp. Damien felt like a complete jerk for forgetting it. Luckily though, the rider's dragon chimed in at exactly the right moment, saving him from an awkward apology and her rider apparently from her own anxiety. Nikita, that was her name. He would have to remember that. The rider found himself smiling at Ekhi's introduction, and as he turned back to glance at Nikita he dipped his head in a polite gesture. “Well, since you already know my name, m'lady, m'lady,” he said, nodding first to Nikita then Ekhi, respectively. “Allow me to introduce– Well, my lady! This is Bucha.” He chuckled, hoping to inject a bit of levity into the conversation. “We were hoping for a bit of peace and quiet. Gotta get away from the throng every now and again or you'll go crazy.” He smiled. Shooting a look over his shoulder, Damien waved over his colorful partner. When she arrived she snorted warm air over his neck affectionately, ruffling his hair in the process. Shaking his head playfully, Damien patted the Lightning's neck before turning back to the Celestial pair. “So, how's life been treating you ladies since our last meeting?” He asked casually. |
