I'm breaking the silence, I'm falling apart for you I'm chasing the righteous, becoming a part of you Character Number: 1st Name: Tarovir Verai Age: 23 (Born Winter 3276) Gender: Male (he/his/him) Sex: Male Sexuality: Homosexual Appearance: Tarovir does not look like a particularly kind person. Absolutely none of his intimidation is tied to his height. Standing at a shorter than average 5'5", Taro is shorter than most other candidates, which he really doesn't like. Instead, though, all the excess mass that should have gone into his height has instead formed muscle mass. Taro is stocky and strudy, not to the point to be compared to an Earth dragon, but it's going to take quite a few hits to get him down. And people have tried- That much is obvious, if the muscle wasn't enough of a giveaway. Taro's littered in scars, mostly along his back and arms, seeming to all be from fights. His nose has been broken once or twice, and his right ear has a definite chunk taken out of it. Not a whole lot of scars on his face, thankfully, maybe the glancing blow or two against his jaw or the side of his face. Tarovir's face is square, with a solid jaw and a bit more blunt features. His eyes and eyebrows are nearly constantly set into a glare, lips full and frowning. His nose is a bit wide, and a bit more flat than it properly should be. Taro's skin is a dark, rich brown, eyes dark enough to seem near-black. Against all this harshness, though, his hair is quite lovely, a smooth black, and quite soft to the touch. Unfortunately, Taro doesn't seem to care terribly much for it, leaving it seeming more unbrushed and unkempt than anything else, falling haphazardly to the base of his shoulderblades. Don't try to suggest he cuts it, though. That's a bad idea all around. His style of dress is... really, really boring. It can't even really be argued that he tries, because he doesn't. If it's not something the Academy has given him, then it's a dulled neutral color, and probably half ill-fitting. Taro doesn't put too much stock, it seems, into his appearance. That said, his clothes are all cared for, tears patched, that sort of thing... But none of it is really attractive. Tarovir stands at attention, most of the time. Not "military-trained" attention, but more like "someone is going to try to kill me at any given moment and I need to be prepared" attention. His movements are careful, deliberate, always keeping his own thoughts and emotions guarded if he can. None of that applies, though, when he's fighting- There, he's nearly reckless, throwing himself at whatever the threat is until one of them stops moving. Personality: stubborn - grumpy - overly protective of small children/animals - fond of water - tends to get into fights often Tarovir is not a fun person to be around, really. He's grouchy and irritably as a rule, with a penchant for snapping at the slightest offense. He tends to get into arguments with Jaska quite often, but may The Rider help whomever threatens the smaller man. Taro doesn't take kindly to that. He's also more of a "hit first, ask later" type of person, which means he's doing quite well at the Academy and has made plenty of friends. Taro is stubborn, and sarcastic at times, which is a wonderful combination. He also doesn't sugar coat his words often, at all, so if you're being stupid, he will let you know. He's also impatient, and most of the time wants to take problems into his own hands, and just fix them himself. The fact that Jaska stops him from doing this 9 times out of 10 is infuriating. All that being said, Taro does have a more gentle side. He's quite protective of Jaska, and tends to get almost overly defensive of small children and any young animal, no matter how big that young animal may be. He's also rather fond of water, and on his way to the Academy saved many a helpless animal from the river. Rank: Sekkaian Candidate History: Safi - younger sister (deceased) Winter 3276 - Born Spring 3281 (5) - Safi is born Winter 3287 (11) - Safi dies Spring 3287 (11) - Tarovir finally sells Spring 3289 (13) - Tarovir meets Jaska Winter 3297 (21) - Tarovir and Jaska escape Winter 3299 (23) - Accepted into the Academy tw: child abuse Tarovir's history is not a fun one. Certainly not anything anyone wants to endure. He was born to Taint-sympathizers, and as such wasn't ever really in a "friendly" part of Sekkai. His parents thought highly of dragon riders, yes, but leaned more towards the followers of Nidhogg than the rides from the Academy. His parents believed females were more prone to the "powerful" dragon ranks, and so aimed to have more daughters. It didn't always work. Tarovir was named only when it became difficult to distinguish him from the other males. The daughters were more valued, more praised, and so were cared for first- The sons had to fight over the scraps that were left, be it food or clothes or bedding. Tarovir, led to believe his uselessness, rarely fought back. He was attacked and bullied relentlessly by the elder boys, and often went to sleep hungry. The only real respite he had was straying far to the river's edge. Taro had run there, once, trying to escape his siblings, and found they would not stray to the water. He clung to this defense, often retreating there for hours, until Safi was born. Safi was born sickly, and was not worth the effort of caring for, really. She was a daughter, yes, and thereby worth more than all the males combined, but with her health she would not be a rider. Her parents cared for her, yes, but only just above how they treated their sons. And something... Something of that struck Taro as wrong, and even as a child he did what little he could to care for her. His mother would not tuck Safi in, so he would sneak into her room at night, and tuck her in. And when the pain and nightmares would keep her awake, Taro would sing gently- Songs he had only overheard his mother singing to the other girls, to help them sleep. Several of the words were wrong, phrases made up entirely, but they seemed to help, and that was all that mattered. And it worked, for a few years. Caring for Safi made Tarovir a hair more tolerable, and he grew close to the younger girl. He would take care of her, and she would praise him, and play with him when she had the strength. Taro learned to smile, and to laugh. One day, he took her to the river, and she found a perfectly smooth stone. He picked all the flowers she asked him to, and wore her flower-crown until they headed back home. She died a few weeks before her sixth birthday. He had sung to her, the night before, as always, but she had stopped him when he tried to leave, and begged a second song. Taro had hesitated- It was so late already- but obliged. He woke to the screaming rage of his mother, who grabbed Taro by the arm and hauled him out of the house, shrieking that Safi's death was his fault, that he had cursed her to death, deemed him a bad, evil omen. The rest of the boys were conscripted to take him the short ways to Hellman's Well, and see what price they could fetch for him. They were rewarded when they caught Tarovir, if the young male was foolish enough to try to escape. Eventually he stopped. A few months, and someone picked up Tarovir. Finally, his mother was free of the daughter-killer, and her purse was quite a few pounds lighter to boot. Tarovir was less lucky. A weak, shy thing was not wanted- What was the use for those with brewing conflict and tension? A fighter, someone who would throw themselves at battle with no though- those people were useful. And so Tarovir was taught to fight. It was not a quick or easy process. Taro's owner had little time or patience for failure. Tarovir learned not through praise, but through the strike of blade against his skin, the ache in his arms as sword deflected sword. It took time, and sweat, and blood. But he learned. It was a few years before he met Jaska. The other didn't offer where he had come from, before. Taro didn't ask. He was quiet, and thin, but knew how to sew wounds and set bone. Their meetings were only ever due to necessity, at first, but someplace between split lips and dislocated shoulders, a wary friendship was formed. Soon enough, Taro was visitng the small healer without having something broken, or bleeding profusely. He told Jaska of his family, and learned that his wasn't the worst out there, despite his original thoughts. He spoke of Safi, and Jaska revealed he had a sister, too. Nothing else was spoken that evening, but the silence was comforting. It was usual for them to circle uselessly around the no-man's lands, never quite close enough to the Taint, never quite close enough to the Sekkaian lands. But one day their caravan veered sharply, and Jaska, the small healer who never caught any undue attention, he whispered a plan. They had to try to escape- Dying out in the wilds, no matter how horribly, was far, far better than whatever awaited them both in the Tainted lands. Tarovir was quick to agree. They waited until they stopped for food. The hulking orc of a man was reading up on something-or-another. Probably a map, leading towards the Tainted lands. Tarovir didn't really care. He waited until Jaska had crept over, speaking gently to the horses, grabbing one of the reins. The healer scrabbled up onto the horse, and Taro let out a shout, spooking the other horses, only just managing to climb up behind Jaska before their own creature bolted, the others whinnying and spreading in fear. Neither Taro or Jaska looked back. It was fortunate, really, that the pair had escaped together. Jaska knew how to pull life from nothing, it seemed, drawing water from the ground, forraging food Tarovir would never have found on his own. Tarovir, in turn, kept them safe, keeping at bay the stray chimaera, the cackling groups of imps, the phoenixes screaming fury over Things too close to their nests. Somehow, they.... they both survived, making it all the way to the Academy. Tarovir was exhausted, and not in the mood to bargain on the best of days. Thankfully, Jaska had sense, and was able to weasel them a place to stay, a regular source of food. It involved drafts into some military program, but Taro didn't care at that point- The prospect of an actual cot was all he really cared about. Jaska was whisked away to help the other doctors, and Tarovir was pulled outside, to the dirt and crops. Creating life is something he would argue has never been in his skillset, but the weeks pass and he starts to learn, how many times to turn the earth before it is soft enough, how much water is needed to feed the seeds, and not drown them. It is hard work, certainly not easy, but it is something he can apparantly do. The military training, too, is something he can do. Taro had never learned "official" stances or forms, but he's goot good intuition. The rest of it? The part involving dragons? That.... He seems a bit less interested in that. It's not that he doesn't like the dragons- Quite the opposite! Tarovir loves the dragons, thinks every last one unique and beautiful and wonderful. It's just... This teaching is for prepping dragonriders. And he doesn't have a single chance at that. So as much as he adores all the dragons... there's really no point in him wasting his time there.
