The sun hung low in the sky, clouds lazily drifting across the blue sky. The horizon glittered, much like the ocean the child hailed from, casting waves of peace down to the water dragon. With the famine and shortage of food, the child of water had taken to lending aid to fishing the sea. Gathering anything and everything she could to help stock the pantries for their armies. It was enough she could do and that satisfied the dragon. Rivior hadn’t slacked either, picking up his tools to help create traps and repair fishing instruments for those in town. It had taken some time to get the hang of it, but pretty soon he could fix and create the simple traps, and patch larger ones. There was not a lack of work for the pair, but for right now the water dragoness simply enjoyed the time to herself.

The hunger gnawed in her belly, and while it was not as sharp as it had been, it made her uncomfortable. She had not been in want of food like this before; however, she didn’t complain. She knew her bonded worried, but she did what she could to alleviate that. Resting on the lip of their apartment, the water dragoness watched the birds turn in for the night, their last gathering coming to an end. She knew naught of what to come, but she knew that keeping her head held high would help. They couldn’t let despair rule. She sighed, stretching and yawning, showing rows of curved teeth before shaking off the slight stupor of sleep. Something pulled at her--she had been feeling it slightly alongside the hunger, though it had started small. But now it grew, next to the hunger. A fire that raged. And she had tried to stifle it and ignore it, but she couldn’t. Others had risen--and she well, perhaps it wouldn’t be as bad. Others were surely worried about their offspring, yet they had risen to the call. They had their fears, she was sure. But it would be alright, she was sure.

She hummed, the echoing sounds softly reverberating around her, creating a soothing balm. But how should she rise? Whome would answer? How would she choose? She mused to herself, How would she deem them worthy of her? She hummed to herself, watching the birds dive and sing. But there were so many decisions. So many lanes she could travel, so many options. However, she mused if she rose to call, would a specific one answer?

Oh this was silly, she knew which one she wanted. And all she had to do was ask. With careful ease, the lengthy water dragon slipped into the air, powerful legs pushing herself off the ledge. Wings snapped open to catch the air, and even that motion winded her slightly. But she pushed it to the side. Her form had thinned, but she paid it no heed. The one she sought would not notice either.

Finding the small lapin forest was easy, and she smiled, landing gently in front of the forest. It didn’t surprise her to find him among the fields. She rose and smiled at the forest. “Good evening, tectorum.” She smiled, her maw stretching almost comically and slightly fearsome in her attempt to smile. However, the small forest would know what she was attempting. She hummed, instinctively. Tectorum would most likely get flustered at the sudden appearance, but he would settle, he always did. “Would you care to get out of the academy with me for awhile?” She asked, ignoring the flame in her belly. “Come, while the sun is still above the horizon. Just you and me.” There was a note in Siren’s voice, something sultry and primal in her tone. The male couldn’t miss it. “Please Tectorum?” It became abruptly clear to anyone else what this was.

She didn’t wait too long, only long enough for the forest to gather his wits around him. It took effort to get her lengthy frame in the sky, but when she found a thermal, it became easier for the water to fly. She hummed, beckoning the forest with every motion. She made sure the small forest could keep up with her easily, but she danced around, a song in her heart and on in her lips, it was a soft melody that the forest could easily follow when she danced and dove into the thickets of the forest. She didn’t speed through the trees, she didn’t have the energy for a race, but she picked a pace.

Through the forest she flew, before coming to a soft clearing hidden away among a cliff base. The river fell from the top before emptying out into the pond. She landed, he song for the small forest echoing out, leading him and him alone to her. When he found her,she had settled along the shore, tail grazing the water gently. Here away from everywhere, the pain and fear, there was serenity. Peace. So far away from prying eyes, but safe enough that they wouldn’t be bothered by anyone or thing. She would never put Tectorum in any sort of harm's way.

“Here we go, a good place for us.” She hummed, a twinkle in her eye as she slunk around the forest like a cat would. Of course, he was going to have a little bit of a task to complete. He wasn’t getting off that easy, it wouldn’t be fun or challenging. Tectorum would enjoy it, he would be in his element. Hopefully, he had gotten a grasp on what she asked of him. “A cozy spot--no worries, this place is safe.” She hummed comfortingly, letting the forest settle. “It’s peaceful here, And serene. I thought you would like here too. Sometimes I like to come out here and clear my mind.” She gestured for the forest to join her. She would wait for him to settle, to figure out what she wanted before giving him her challenge.

Even with the famine in full swing, everyone had work to do. For Tectorum, that meant joining the other forest dragons in the forests and fields to do their best in tending to larger crop harvests. He saw very little of Ezra most days. The bedraggled healer had chosen to throw herself into her work with little regard to such concepts of rest. There was guilt there and Tect was more than fully aware of it. It remained unspoken between the two when the toils of the day bid them to finally rest. Had Ezra died in the barn, she would not have been responsible for spreading the contagion. That his rider would even consider such a prospect fitting vexed him terribly, but he knew better than to bring it up again. There was work to be done and hashing out personal traumas, no matter how deeply buried they might appear to be, would not help anyone in Sekkai's current crisis.

There was no mistaking that the sickness spreading like wildfire across Nyushi had affected everyone, and for Tectorum, that same misfortune was particularly unmistakable. Though he could-and did-supplement his diet with whatever variety of fruits were available in their day to day toil, Tectorum still needed meat, just like everyone else. It was a blessing on its own that he was so tiny, else he would be suffering just as much as many of the larger breeds. Even so, there was more that Tectorum could do to reduce the impact he himself had upon those hungry masses. In an effort to keep his energy reserves up, the lapine forest had defoliated most of his leaves. The usual spine of thick, fleshy leaves down his back and tail was gone, as were the leaves that deckled the branches that extended from each of his elbows, the fringe around his face and paws. The only traits he did retain were the feathery protrusions beneath his wings. Though they felt a little excessive, he was not entirely comfortable with the notion of trying to learn how to fly without them, and so they remained whether frivolous or not. The loss of left him looking rather silly; all antlers and ears and not much else. But it was a sacrifice he was happy to make.

In the wake of a finishing a meager meal before returning to his duties that he noticed a familiar shadow passing overhead. He glanced upward with watery black eyes as the serpentine water landed gracefully upon the field before him. His long ears swiveled forward at the sound of her voice and though he did not fluster, he wasn't entirely sure why she was here. Not that he minded, of course! Just that he had assumed most everyone had a task to do, and Tectorum himself didn't usually retire until later in the evening. Something different was afoot.

"Good evening, Siren. Was there something I could help you with?" There must have been "something" but whatever it was, Tectorum could simply not put his finger on it, which was a right shame, because the other forests still returning to tend the field all glanced up with a knowing expression; and rightly kept their mouths shut. At Siren's inquiry, Tectorum looked a little thoughtful. Of course he'd be happy to go, but he was working and that was also important. He glanced towards his peers only for one to gesture for him to leave before they returned to packing down the soil for a few newly planted bushes. They'd be wrapping up soon anyway, and Tectorum wouldn't miss much.

"I suppose it's alright." He stretched himself carefully and gave his wings a brief flutter. He wasn't sure what all of the posturing was for, but something told him that it was Important and that perhaps he should know more than he did. Either way, he was pleased to come along and as Siren took off into the evening sky, he followed soon after. The hardest part for Tect wasn't getting airborne, but keeping pace. Siren, in all of her serpentine glory was almost five times his length and it was almost a chore to keep up with her-not that he would ever complain as the lapine forest would likely follow her wherever she asked, even without the aid of a gentle hypnotic tune.

As they landed, Tectorum tucked his wings in neatly and followed after his longtime friend and confidant. The waterfall was a pleasant surprise as he cocked his head to the side, sending his ears flopping over. It was a nice little hidden space and Siren was certainly correct that he would like it here. With a slight loping gait, Tectorum brought himself about to rest beside the long water dragon, perky and alert, though not entirely aware.

"This is a lovely spot Siren and I am delighted that you might share it with me." the forest tittered. "But I can't help but shake the feeling that you wish for me to do something. May I ask what?" He cocked his head slightly to the side as he waited for Siren's answer.

Of course it was easy to get the forest to follow her, but the water would never demand tect's time. But That was not her worry today. The forest without much hitch followed the lanky serpent, even if he did fall behind for a bit. But soon they were sitting together and the peace radiated through her, somewhat calming the tension in her gut. Even this presided over the hunger. But that would be all.

Tect didn't waste anytime to point out that she seemed to want something. However, the water had misjudged a tad on how innocent the forest was. He picked up on that she wanted him to do something for her, but it had flown over his head on why. Even the others had given them knowing looks when she had pulled the small dragon away from the task.

Oh, how precious and sweet the small dragon was. She just wanted to hide him from the world, but she couldn't do that. She hummed, moving closer to partially wrap around the forest comfortingly, smiling.

"Of a sort, I do have something that I wish for you to do. It wouldn't be much of a challenge if I didn't have a small task for you." She looked at him, wondering how much of this she was going to have to explain to the small forest. Though, she might as well get it over with now.

"Though, Tect. I'm going to have to ask. You do realize why I've asked you out here, right?"

She wouldn't put it past him to not have quite fully grasped why they were out here so far from prying eyes. This wasn't like any other of their usual meet-ups.

Tectorum cocked his antlered head as he let his ears flop over in the usual relaxed fashion that he had with Siren. He was oblivious to some things, and not to others, and it seemed that once again he had missed a cue that was easier for everyone else to clue in on. As he relaxed however, his senses seemed to clue in on all that he had ignored while so thoroughly embroiled in work and thought in the fields.

Oh.

OH!

Siren had a task for him. Was he the only one capable of doing it? His ears swiveled at her words as he contemplated the sound of her hypnotic voice. His eye ridges furrowed in thought as best as they could and the tip of his tail drummed on the earth while he contemplated.

"I am not the best with subtle references I'm afraid. But I think...you asked me here for your flight?" He only seemed half confident.

"If so, are you sure?" The little forest seemed terribly worried all of the sudden. "Surely there are bigger, stronger suitors..." For the life of him, Tectorum seemed a little baffled. Siren could have any choice of other males to fly circles for her if she so chose. Though he did care for her deeply, that she would pick him, and only him, even after their fond conversation during the Khana Festival...

"You're sure, aren't you?" He was a little surprised, and very pink. Without his leaves it was hard not to blush from snout to tailtip as he tried to dig his toes in the soil to hide, just a little.

Cute popped into the waters mind, and of course, it was the only way she could describe him. His obliviousness made her teeth want to fall out and she wanted to hide him away from the world and protect him. But the feeling passes and Siren smiled, reaching out to calmly shield him with her wing. She understood his want to hide sometimes. Her own rider had his anxieties and it was easy to learn quickly how to soothe them for him and others.

"You would be correct, That is exactly why I have asked you here." She responded gently. The fire in her urged, but she had to be patient. Patience was key. He had to want to do it. "Tectorum, mine, I do not want any other suitors. I would not have asked you directly if I wanted to have others contend. As it stands, you are my dear friend and one I care deeply for, and as such, I only want you. If you will have me."

She spoke in a soft gentle tone, letting herself coil around the small forest. They were in no hurry to be anywhere. Chores had been finished, and they had the rest of the evening to themselves.

"This is my task for you. It is small and simple. I want you to find something, that expresses you. Something that shows you and what you care for. And then I want you to find something that reminds you of me. Flowers have their own language, if you want to derive it from there. I do enjoy flowers. But whatever suits you. And then you can present it to me. You can create it here, you can go off and search for it. But I will wait right here for you."

Perhaps not the stringiest of tasks, but one that had some thought to it. She did not needs shows of power to proof that they would survive. Tectorum was strong, and an inner strength that he just didn't see. She wished he could see him as she saw him. But for now.

"Will you do this for me?" She hummed gently.

“Of course I can do this for you.” Tectorum gave a small toss of his head as Siren delivered her task for him. Siren was his greatest friend and confidant. That she trusted him with such an important decision made his heart swell. “A small and simple task, like me! I will do my best.” He snapped his wings briefly as he looked around the forest and moved to slip away, only to turn back to Siren with a look of his bright, black eyes. “I’ll be back, you’ll see.” though he was slow on the uptake, there was little hesitation in his eagerness to tend to Siren’s whims. Tectorum circled their little haven for a brief moment before bounding off into the thick of the jungle. This deep in the wilderness, the little forest was not confident he would find what he was looking for, but he would make the effort all the same; Siren deserved his best after all.

His searching took him far from pleasurable company of Siren, but for good reason. What Tectorum had in mind did not proliferate in such conditions, but he was sure he could find what he needed if he searched long and hard. A careful beat of his wide wings carried him upwards as he reached the shores of the river above them before scampering off along the shore to search in earnest. Nose to the ground, he snuffled through the silty soil before darting off off towards the first piece of driftwood that had settled among the rocks of the ever increasing current of the river’s cascade. The strange and silvery twist of wood budged only reluctantly as the little forest wrestled it to a more suitable space, propping it carefully against a felled tree trunk nearby. He stepped back to observe his composition before giving a snort and deciding that it simply wasn’t enough for what he had in mind, beginning his search anew among the flotsam from further inland. With a gentle splash he departed beneath the tumultuous waves to search for smaller pieces of such select lumber, arranging them neatly into an attractive wreath after carefully whittling and clawing at various hollows and scrapes among the skeletonized debris.

Satisfied with his handiwork, Tectorum began to fill the various hollows with a mix of sand and loamy soil. Bits of bark and other shredded plant fiber provided a pleasant scaffolding for the future inhabitants of the hollowed out lumber. The heavy lifting done, Tectorum began carefully plucking a few of the smaller buds from his paws and the branches at his elbows. He could certainly spare the energy that he had been reserving due to the famine; Siren was always the exception to modesty, though his usual behavior these days didn’t show it. Each tiny little propagation gave sprouted small roots before the forest began to arrange them neatly through the cobbled together planter for display. The effort was painstakingly tedious, but Tectorum would not be deterred as he busied himself with filling the impromptu sculpture with foliage that simply wasn’t native to the humid climate of the forest.

Satisfied, the little forest peered over the edge of the cliffside before fluttering down carefully to land beside Siren once again. His satellite-like ears perked and swiveled towards the lengthy water as he stood as tall as he could. “I found what I would like to show you, but I would need you to come up and see as I cannot move it from the hillside.” there was a brief look of startlement in his appearance that perhaps Siren would change her mind before Tectorum shook away the self doubt and returned to the clearing up above. There he waited for Siren’s arrival, just the floodplain of the river. Carefully picked out in silvered and blackened driftwood was a gentle wreath with an almost serpentine likeness. Tectorum was no glass, but he could arrange flowers as well as anyone, which was precisely what he had done. Nestled in the hollows, holes and divots of the impromptu sculpture were dozens, if not hundreds of prolific little rosettes of lush green and faint pink succulent plants, carefully shaped and placed so that they swirled about in faint little patterns.

“Succulents don’t really like humidity, and all this wet soil wouldn’t much help,” Tectorum explained. But with the right substrate, and a suitable habitat, they are quite prolific wherever you might want to put them.” he swiveled his ears about as he watched Siren carefully. “That’s why I’ve planted them this way, so that the driftwood protects them from the elements, just like you do for me.” a look of determination crossed Tectorum’s face as he tried to finish speaking. He was bound and determined not to be inundated with his self consciousness once again. He would absolutely finish speaking his piece. “I get flustered a lot. I scare easily and I have a tendency to panic at the best of times, but when I’m with you Siren I feel much calmer. You are a great friend, and you provide me with a stable foundation at the best of times. I just hope I can do the same for you when it matters most.” He perked his ears slightly, unable to keep them from turning pink as he tried to put on a good show of confidence for the graceful water.
