"Who are we waiting for again? I swear my scales are going to melt. Maybe they got lost, or can't find us?" Raphael's queries made his rider, Amene, chuckle softly. Her fingers twined into her hair, working it back into a single braid as blue eyes drifted to her companion. "My dear, it would be impossible to not find you. You are the most handsome, and lovely, eyesore ever created among dragon kind." It was true. The leggy glass was an astonishing shade of neon pink, only made more dazzling by the onset of gold on his larger plates, tail, and his horns and claws. In the sunlight, it actually did seem like he was glowing, even. Throughout the years he had been on the receiving end of jokes amidst his peers, but Raphael took them in humor, though it was Amene that tended to take offense should someone go too far with it. It wasn't his fault he had been born that way, after all. Besides, he was as unique as they got in this case. Raphael snorted and peered down at her. "It takes talent to be offensive and complimentary in the same sentence," he grumbled, but he was smiling. "I think we're just rather early, anyway. Not that it mattered because of how flipping hot it gets so soon." "You won't notice it quite as much once we are up and flying," Amene assured him, inspecting her googles for any cracks or wear in the strap. "We are awaiting Jaromir and Water Limnoreia, a pair I have yet to personally meet." "Nor? Ah, I haven't actually interacted with her," Raphael answered Amene's silent question at his recognition. "Just gazed from afar." "I'm not sure if that is stalker-ish or cute." The pair waited on the very edge of the Acdemy's grounds, prepped and ready for the task at hand. Used to working alone, more or less, Amene was more than curious to work with another pair. When the Shadowguarde assigned you a task, arguing seemed silly. The fact she and another had been plucked from the sea of many to do what needed to be done was surprising. Otherwise, she figured her and Raphael would once again resume their rebuilding efforts. While it was by no means a very enlightening task, Amene was not one to argue. The investigation of leftover and old military structures and rigging that had been left after a Tainted raid was best seen to by more seasoned riders, to disable and dismantle as needed in case there was danger for innocent passerby. Perhaps there would be good left over parts she could find use for elsewhere. "Packs secure, Raphael?" Amene asked as she settled her goggles back atop her head, having not heard if the glass had protested her earlier words. "I mended the worn areas on the straps. Now, see, tugging that hard is what got them so ruined in the first place," she chided Raphael as he used a hand to give a hearty tug to one of the main straps around his chest. He huffed. "Yes, well, your boot string is untied," was Raphael's best try at a retort. Amene rolled her eyes, but looked down anyway. Ah, he was right. |

It had been a long while since the pair had teamed up with any other pair at the academy for any sort of assignment. And the fact that it had come from so up high than from his regular handler, made the water dragoness even more anxious about the whole affair. It had taken a whole thirty minutes extra to get her to settle so he could properly strap in the saddle and bags rather than just throw them on. Rations, extra clothing, first aid kit, and other important odds and ends they might need were carefully stowed away. With a sigh, the water thrust off into the sky, long wings catching the thermals with relatively ease. Faded yellows still glinted in the sun as they travelled higher and higher, streamers whipping about them. The famine had taken its toll on them—her form far more lankier than it had been, and brittle scales leeched of vibrant colors, only faint hues of what used to be. "You sure it won't take long." "Dollface, it'll prolly take the better part of the day and then we'll be home snug to pack for the next trip." The wind whistled around them as the water rider did his best to soothe the anxious mind of the water. "Why did they choose us? and why with a pair?" "Probably because we're scouts, we are used to go looking for things-its our specialty and probably for backup. Safety in pairs, lovely." he patted her head as orange eyes peeled the ground for whom they would be working for. "Amene and Rapheal—a glass pair. They shouldn't be hard to miss, i'm told." "There is a bright neon dragon down there." Jar peered down and sure enough, the pink dragon stood out on the edge of the grounds. Without a doubt this had to be the pair, they definitely stood out like a sore thumb. It could be a good thing or a bad thing, but nor could stand out with the best of them—especially when her colors weren't so…dull. She angled down and landed, tripping over a streamer and barely managed to correct her self from crashing face-first into the dirt instead continued to skid before stumbling around. "Oh. Oh no. What a horrible first impression. I tripped. Oh no." She creened sadly as she straightned up and she couldn't even bring herself to look at the other dragon. First meeting them, and she tripped. Now they would think she couldn't do the simplest tasks correctly, and oh why was she so klutzy. "Nor, relaaax. You have like, a gazillion streamers on you that you have no way to move out of your way—it's not your fault. IF we had a way to braid them or something. but it's cartalidge, and I doubt you want them sawed off." Nor gasped, shaking her head, "No no. Um. no." She squeaked out. embarrassment coloring her cheeks slightly pink. Jar patted her head before he hopped out of the saddle, and slid down her leg with ease before two feet hit the edge. "Greetings! You two must be Amene and Rapheal. I'm Jaromir, and this lovely fish-outta-water is Lemnoriea. But you can call her Nor if you wish." "Jar!" She squeaked, knowing he said it out of affection, but oh how they must think she was an embarrassment to dragonkind. She couldn't even land properly. She hadn't ever been able to land on land without messing it up somehow. "Um, Greetings to you both." She couldn't stop the thoughts swirling in her mind, and Jar reached out and set a hand on her leg, hoping to sooth the anxiety that threatened to choke her. "So, We ready to go do this? Perhaps we'll find something interesting." "But not dangerous." Nor squeaked out again, not feeling at all terribly confident about this mission. |

Amene had just finished retying her boot string when Raphael stood at attention, his head tilted upward. "There she is," he said, in a tone his rider was having a hard time tagging as happy anticipation or awe. She decided to settle with awe, because it was a pretty sight. The dragon was not lacking in the color department, and had what appeared to be numerous streamers waving about in the air as she descended. Now, Amene knew how to keep a straight face. Not to say she was humored by the water's awkward landing, but more or less concerned for the poor dear's safety in this task they were undertaking. Raphael, however, was a pro when it came to this stuff. He swept forward lightly, bowing his head to the other pair. "Nonsense, I've seen far worse landings, most of which were made by me," the glass responded. "As a delight as it is to see you in the air, it must be miraculous to see you in the water." "Alright," Amene spoke up to Jar in the wake of what appeared to be an attempt of Raph flirting, or trying to soothe, the other dragon. "It's very nice to meet you both. It may be a bit dangerous, actually, but it's our job to amend that so no one gets hurt, but we're ready." She smiled in confidence, and Raphael gave a nod. "I scoured the map and know exactly where to go. We'll land just a little way away so that we can reduce risk to ourselves and approach on foot," he said as he began to reach down for Amene. The woman gave Jar a thumbs up before securing her goggles over her eyes. "We'll make a fine team, I believe. Alright, off we go!" With his smallest limbs, Raphael gently secured his rider and lifted her up to a point she could more easily, and safely, climb into the saddle. The brightly-colored glass dragon stepped a respectable distance back for Nor before spreading his wings and leaping powerfully up from the earth. And, as promised, it felt at least a bit cooler as they began to fly, but it was still rather humid. _____ As promised, Raphael came to land just a few minutes before what had appeared from the air to be a wrangled mess of metal and wood that stretched a reasonable distance amidst the jungle trees. Once Amene was on her feet on the ground, she tucked her goggles back up onto her head and fanned her face. "Good grief, we couldn't have chosen a better day huh?" "Apparently," Raphael sighed, looking up for the other pair that shouldn't have been too far behind. "I have an uneasy feeling." "About...?" "I'm not quite sure, it's just there." "Well, keep a close eye out and Jar and I will assess the damage and if there needs to be more," she said, reaching out to pat his leg. His worries were rather normal, but she never disregarded them out of hand. |
