Hi there, My name is Emily.... Emily X. Backgound blurb: I'm new here but not new to discussion forums. I love sharing ideas and opinions. I'm half Chinese and half English. Working in London at the moment but I was born in Canada and raised mostly in Canada and the U.S. What a mongrel mess, huh ? :ermm: Raison d'etre ici: I doubt that anyone here would remember but I posted a couple of times on the old MK.com forum. I've checked out this site from time to time but I've been busy travelling and working and felt like I was just too busy to jump in. And that's still true but I'm jumping in anyway now cuz I love Mark's music (not so much the man) and I feel this forum would benefit from having another voice and also cuz I've come to the conclusion that Stanko is awesome! (Hi Stanko!) How I discovered Mark: I used to listen to CBC Radio a lot as a kid and the first time I heard Mark Knopfler was when they were using an excerpt from his song "What It Is" as the intro theme for a international news program called "Dispatches". The theme got stuck in my head and bugged me until I just had to go find out "what it is". I went and got the CD "Sailing to Philadelphia" and became a fan. Since then, I've checked out most of his stuff and he has deff become one of my favourite songwriters. OK, so that's the nutshell. Now I'm gonna go stick my oar in and see if I can stir up some trouble... :winky: |

Hi, Emily X. I want to welcome you to our great forum. Everyone is welcome here. We love to chat about Dire Straits and Mark's music. When a new album comes out, we have a great time trying to figure out if the lyrics have hidden meanings, discerning the difference between English spoken in Great Britain and the U.S., the idiomatic phrases Mark uses, and his absolute genius with a melody and his very complex harmonies. And above all, the song is the king! We have members from many different locations - continents and countries, and I truly believe that we have all come to a better understanding of our individual and countries' differences. Your comment about the old "red pages" takes me back to when I first discovered Mark. I was a lurker, rather than a joiner and poster. I am a member of another Mark oriented forum, but must admit I feel most comfortable with this group. In my case, it was hearing Sultans on my local classic rock station that got me interested. Before that, I'm afraid that my husband was into country, so I missed the whole DS experience. After he died, I began to explore a lot of music for the right genre for me. Stir up all the trouble you can! We have been a bit dull of late waiting for the new album and music for Local Hero. A lot of what has been said, especially elsewhere, is pretty much speculation, so new thoughts are always welcome. Oh, and by the way, that is a pretty neat avatar! Welcome again! |

Hi Emily! Welcome to this forum. I have been a fan of DS/MK since 1982 when my son came home with a couple of DS tapes. Until then I had always thought that DS was a punk band, because of the name, and so ignored listening to them. How wrong I was, because when I listened to these tapes I immediately knew that this was my kind of music. I have been listening ever since! I hope you will enjoy being here. Thanks for the welcome everyone! @suprlinda - for me too it's the lyrics that interest me most. I like reading the discussions about the unusual phrases and stuff in Mark's songs. I've also studied them as imagery and been intrigued by the stuff that he actually leaves out. Like how he can say one thing and you get a bigger picture from it. It's pretty cool. @qjamesfloyd - I guess I'm most interested in hearing a new album and new songs. A documentary and a musical, not so much. I'm happy to just listen to his songs and learn more about writing. @Stanko - Sorry, I didn't mean to say you are more special than anyone else here. It's just that I saw you are from Croatia and I really appreciated your interest in understanding the words in the songs. #ElinaFinn, the same. And I have also really enjoyed the replies from others like #suprlinda and #3Pints and #3Strats about the origin and meaning of certain idiomatic phrases and stuff. It's all good. @superval99 - I totally know what you mean about a band name being misleading. I've done that a few times. With Mark I only discovered that he was in Dire Straits after l heard a couple of his own solo things. I'd heard a couple of their classic songs but when I found out later that it was Mark's band, I went and listened to that earlier stuff and really liked some of it. Thanks again..... You guys rock !! |

Hello and welcome, Emily X. Nice introduction. Yes, I think I remember seeing a few posts from you in the latter days of the old forum, which (after the release of Get Lucky when they changed the background colour) we used to refer to as the 'red pages'. Please do feel free to stick your oar in! :waytogo: |
