Hello. I was introduced to this forum by qjamesfloyd from the Mike Oldfield community forum at tubular.net

I have been a fan of Dire Straits since I was 4 years old! I am now 20
Being a fan since that age they must have been the very first band I listened to properly when my Dad decided to get a tape of their 'Money for Nothing' compilation album.

A year later, one of my Dad's friends was willing to part with a good number of Dire Straits albums since he had too many records in his collection and was moving. I think I was generously given the debut album, 'Communique', 'Making Movies' and 'Brothers In Arms' from him

At the age of 6 I think, I bought 'Love Over Gold' from a second-hand record fair. We didn't have a CD player back then! By this time I had got into more bands and genres of music and my interest with Dire Straits was fading. Interestingly though, I was never into pop music of the time or anything typical of the 80s

We got a CD player finally in 1991. My Dad bought me 'On Every Street' near to the time of its release. This was the second CD that I own

From about 1999 I listened again to Dire Straits. I can't remember having a great interest in the music too much. At this time too I bought Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield which leads me to where I am now - the Mike Oldfield community. An avid interest in his music has encouraged me to take up the guitar (I am a music student at university and am a classically trained pianist and percussionist too).

With an interest in the guitar again I think I will be able to like Dire Straits from a different perspective after some 15 years when I was last a proper fan of theirs! So, what have I missed?

I forget the Alchemy concert!

I have the double cassette album and the VHS video of it - incidentally that must have been one of the first commercial videos we bought too.

I see that OES was their last album as a band. That means I've got their studio discography

Welcome to the place Jammer.

If you're up to date with OES then I guess you didn't miss much. I have to ask you this. Are you interested in Mark's solo stuff?

You say you first started listening to DS when you were four!! Wow...just wow! :D

Hi Jammer,i'm glad you took my advice ;) good to see you.
That is cool that you started listening so young, and the fact you listen to Mike Oldfield too, means you have a good ear my friend.it's good that your learning the guitar, there is a lot to learn from MK in both guitar and composing terms, you really should get the solo albums too.

although "telegraph road" is my absolute favourite in general i really like his solo stuff. IMHO Sailing to Philadelphia is really good (nice instrumental half of speedway at nazareth, too)
