This is the only regular DS/MK album I don't own. I was listening to in the shop when it was released and I remember two facts that prevented me from buying it: 1) it sounded way too country-ish for my liking 2) it seemed to have many songs with just Mark on acoustic guitar and vocals Now I'm tempted to give it a second try, so I want to ask if there are any good rock/blues-rock songs like on the most of Sailing To Philadelphia... and also what do you think about Ragpicker's Dream? |

Well for me,i but everything that Mark releases, because i believe and trust in his ability, now, when i first heard The Ragpickers Dream i was'nt that excited, but like so much of Mark's music,it really will and does grow on you,the first track "Why Aye Man"is a great rocking track, with lots of referances to life and work in the north of England, which Mark does so well, another classic song, and great live too.then "Devil Baby"is a lovely accoustic'ish song, with funny clever lyrics, with a lovely melody, one of my favourites on the album,"Hill Farmer Blues" has a gentle start and builds up nicely with some fine dirty Les Paul playing, should sound outstanding live,"A Place Where We Used To Live" is as the title says, another gentle melody, with lovely piano, but the best part for me is the gorgeous outro, with Mark playing some very tastefull accoustic guitar, like only he can,"Quality Shoe"take's it's musical note from another famous song, but Mark gives it a whole new life,he seems to have a thing about shoes, lol"Fare Thee Well Northumberland"is a slow burner, very bluesy, more dirty blues playing,"Marbletown"is just Mark and accoustic guitar, and he is playing some amazing fingerpicking too, lovely tune too."You Don't Know Your Born" is a very English saying, lol, nice song, could have been on a film soundtrack,"Shot At Glory"maybe,it also has some nice Hank Marvin style soloing at the end, with Mark using a Strat, with plectrum and whammy bar,a la Hank."Coyote"this is my least favourite song on the album, although it is still a good track, all about the roadrunner cartoon lyrically,"The Ragpickers Dream"is Mark's Christmas song, and very good it is too,it has so much description in the lyrics, the music is lovely too, plus i love the piano in this one."Daddy's Gone To Nashville"this is the only country song on the album, but i love it,i always like Mark's version of country music,it sounds like it was written and recorded in the 30's,very good production."Old Pigweed"i adore this song, funny lyrics, about food, but,a lovely melody, and it gets better everytime. So,i love this album,i would say buy it,but if your worried about it being too country, then don't worry,it is'nt,it's not like "Neck and Neck". Mark does play lots of accoustic, but he is a fine accoustic player, but don't worry there is a lot of electric too. |

:o I can't believe you had to give a second thought to it, FSD! I absolutely love this album. The title track still remains my favorite closely followed by "Hill Farmer's Blues". "Devil Baby" is a very catchy track. Only Mark could describe Jerry Springer that way :toothless: "Quality Shoe" is a very happy song. One of those songs that you like to listen to while dressing up for work. It gets you started for the day :) I read some place once when Mark was performing this song live, a woman held out her shoe and right in the middle of the song Mark broke out into a laughter  Totally agree on the description of "Daddy's Gone To Knoxville", QJF! When I first heard this song the picture that came to mind was black and white movies, over head projectors, frocks, flashy hats and handkerchiefs :smoky: A very good album, no doubt. |

My favourites are Why Aye Man, Hill Farmer's Blues and You Don't Know You're Born (the solo at the end sounds like Shadows a bit), but overall it's a great album. |
