Yes, thanks Linda, all very interesting. Richard has had a long and varied career, and he is of course a great guitar player, but I think he likes the way he is used by Mark in the band, because although he loves being the side-man, he is used as much more than that.

I agree totally with you James. He does a lot more than just play rhythm! :P I think this allows his creative side to really come into play. I believe most of the music he has written has been done since his connection to Mark started. <_< The only title I can recall seeing from before was Forever in Blue Jeans with Neil D. I seem to also recall there was another song, with someone else - a mentor of Richard's, but when you look up the song, the mentor's name is the only one on it! :(

I don't know the other song you mention Linda, but there are a couple of interesting other connections Richard had to Mark before they became band mates. Richard was in The Notorious Cherry bombs, which formed in the late 70's as Rodney Crowell's backing band, and also in that group was Vince Gill, who played on both the On Every Street, and Golden Heart album, aswell as Neck & Neck.

Also, Richard's brother, has been the drummer for Weird Al Yankovic since 1980, and he parodied Mark's song Money For Nothing.

Here is another thread resurrected - Richard's site has a new posting with a lot of interesting news. Foremost concerns his new album called For The Newly Blue. It will be out in April. He said that he hadn't been too busy with outside jobs this month, so it is done recording and mixing.

He also mentions several other albums he has worked on that will be or are out now, web sites to visit, etc.

Oh, yes, also, the band will start rehearsals in London in April. :P

A fansite I had not heard of has been updated. Here is the link:

Thanks Linda, I check Richard's site almost daily, in the hope he has written something interesting, and you beat me to it,lol. That's good news that he has finished his new album, I bet it will sound great. That fan site was very good too, it just goes to show how much Richard has done over the years!!

If you haven't visited Richard's new fan site recently, I have included a quote from Richard concerning his new album:

Quote:

"For The Newly Blue" info

Update 12/03/2013 : Here's an exclusive scoop from Richard about his newest album "For The Newly Blue" , release April 2013:

A thought or two about my latest record For The Newly Blue. Really, I was at loose ends.

Having written and recorded three previous albums that were clearly purpose driven... the beat-group styled Rainy Decade, a decidedly jazz flavoured Code Red and the Phoenix-centric Valley Of The Sun... I began this new album staring at a blank canvas with no particular agenda. So I simply started writing tunes and recording them, threw a lot of it away then wrote and recorded others. Two of them were written 2010 while on tour with Mark Knopfler. Over the next couple of years, some were hatched in various hotel rooms around the world or studio lounges on breaks during recording sessions. Many came about on the living room couch, guitar in hand, TV on, sound off.

I sat down one evening several months before the completion of this record to quietly listen and assess the stack of recordings I'd made... take a good hard look at exactly what it was all about. Or wasn't. A night of reckoning, something that must be done on the home stretch of any album and a hard pill to swallow if things aren't holding up. You immediately find the weak spots, the hairline cracks, any half-cocked writing and all the gaping holes in your precious record. You can choose to ignore them or you can roll up your sleeves and get back to work. I had more work to do. The album would need another couple of tunes to get it over the finish line. Still, I was pleased that most of the music and the recordings held water.

However, what was really troubling me as I looked over the titles of each song was how downcast they were, even when the music wasn't. I began thinking about re-christening a few things, putting a rosier face on them, but as I listened through again it dawned on me that there was something going on here. This was moody music, even the upbeat tunes left a bittersweet aftertaste. I decided to leave the titles alone, not change a word.

One of the first tunes recorded for this album was Your New Blue World. On that evening of reckoning many months later it suddenly became clear to me. All along this record had been shaping up to be a soundtrack for that new blue world... for the displaced, the disappointed and the disillusioned. For the lost and the lonely. For the newly blue.

Richard Bennett -- 2013

It sounds like a cool, rather introspective type of album. I can hardly wait to hear some of it. :waytogo:

I did notice one other thing this time, too. The site is maintained by Nick and Jeremy Bennett.

EDIT: I was looking over the fan site and found some interesting videos as well as photos, etc. The really nice thing I had not seen is an excerpt from the book Chet Atkins in Three Dimensions. It includes a quote from Mark about Richard and Chet that is different than any of the interview material we have seen before.

Thanks Linda, I checked Richard's site and there is nothing on there about his new album, so the people who run his fan site must be on the ball :)
Can you post a link to the fan site please?

Hi, James, The site it on the page below, but I have copied it here for your convenience: Fansite Richard Bennett.

As far as the people running the site, as I think I mentioned, it looks to me like his sons.

Thanks Linda, not sure how I missed that link.
Anyway, I see there is a countdown clock on the fan site to the release of the new album on 31st March. So, not long to wait :)
I also like the video on the site of Richard, Mark and EmmyLou playing an almost unplugged version of Red Staggerwing.

Yea, that's a pretty good video. It looked to me to be on a morning show called, I think, Imus in the Morning on the MSNBC tv station in New York. It was originally a morning "drive" show on radio, but was later simulcast on MSNBC tv, too, I noticed that it looked like Glenn and Richard were the only ones backing up Mark and Emmy Lou. If I read the clock on the screen right, it was about 7:30 in the morning local time when they did that show, I'm guessing in support of the album.

Richard has written an update to his Notes from Nashville. As usual, it is interesting, and he has included a link to an interview he did about the new album that is on the new fansute. Here is the link:

That was a nice interview, interesting what he has to say about not wanting to sell his own CD's at Mark's shows, and I agree with him on that front. It's funny that it is only 2 days untill the new album comes out and there is no album cover picture yet.

Yes, I gave these snippets a listen too, and it does sound very good :) Richard is a very melodic player so can carry off instrumentals very well, and I'm sure playing alongside Mark for so long has had an influence.

2 weeks seems a bit longer, I though it was about a week last time, but then he may mean they are in rehearsal mode for 2 weeks, not that they will be playing songs every day for 2 weeks.

Richard has posted a new note, seems like he has been playing on the new Miranda Lambert and Alison Krauss albums :) I love Alison's singing voice, I have one of her albums, and love it. Richard also says he is looking forward to the shortest tour ever with Mark is October

That's what I was thinking, he may just recap all 5 shows in one post, as it's only a short tour.

It's also a tour in his home country. So he's not really away from home for several months in quite the same way he was for the European tour. Here he's got friends in every town and consequently (I suspect) less time for quiet musings and writing.
Cheers,

Richard finally updated his Notes, and it was as we suspected - his lack of postings was because of a combination of laziness and the shortness of the tour. He did mention a few interesting things - he will be working on a new album of his own after the holidays, and the fact that Isaac has published a book on the 2013 Privateering tour, as well as a few comments about the most recent shows.

Yes, I guess he figured as it's such a short tour, there wasn't much point really, unlike Guy who adds photo's. It's great news he's going to make another album, just hope Guy finds time for GF 3 :)

I just noticed Richard put up a new post several days ago. In it he mentions he is going to be working on a new album of songs he wrote while they were on tour - kind of just like Mark! :waytogo:

He also mentions his friend Henk who maintains the RB Fansite. Henk has gathered quite an interesting collection of complimentary comments by friends and colleagues of Richard. One comment even includes a video clip of Richard involved in a Thelonius Moog spoof, playing an electric sitar! Really a great clip.

Here is the link to the fansite in case you miss it on Richard's site. It is under the Links listing, then Henk's RB Fansite, and click on "Friends For Richard."

Some very interesting comments are included.

I think it is just luck, though since he is on this side of the pond and only one hour ahead of me, that may make a difference. I think you are probably about six hours ahead of me. Different sleep schedules, etc.

And that is definitely cool that he is doing the Nashville thing. I have seen the ads on TV for it, but the show itself doesn't seem to be my cup of tea, so I can't say that I have ever watched or listened to it.

I see Richard put up a new post yesterday afternoon or evening. He doesn't have a lot to say, except that he has commitments for the middle and end of this month. One has to wonder if he will be going to British Grove or not. I have been hoping for some kind of indication since Guy hasn't been exactly forthcoming! :wallbang:

Yes, I wonder if that note is telling, as normally he would say he has the new MK record coming up, but this time nothing :o So, either Mark is doing all the guitar duties himself like on Kill To Get Crimson or he has a new sideman!!!
