MK fans in the UK might want to mark their calendars for October 16th. (from markknopfler.com): At 10 pm (UK time) on October 16 Sky Arts 1 will air the first in a new TV documentary series called Guitar Stories. Presented by John Illsley, the first of these programmes features Mark talking about some of the guitars from Hofners to Pensas that have helped shape his career. You can check out an enticing trailer for the first episode here (don't worry, you don't have to log in to Facebook to view it): http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=...992641092&saved It looks like a fabulous show. I sure wish we were able to watch this here in North America, but I'm sure it will be made available at some point..... Just like "A Life in Songs", right? |

I'm so excited about this show, and It's extra special as It's presented by John Illsley, I don't have Sky, but I'm sure It will be on YouTube soon after broadcast. Looks like it's going to be a series with other guitarists too :) But Mark's guitar collection will be the best I'm sure, and It looks like he is making a visit to John Monteleone's workshop, that looks cool too, and we get to see his gorgeous new ice blue Pensa Shur. |

If you Google John Monteleone, you will come up with informaiton about his instrument building. You can also see his catalog, with all the various types of guitars and mandolins he builds. There is even a clip, I believe, where he goes through how to build an archtop. He is a very articulate man. Also, I think he has a book which is coming out or is already out about the great archtop builders. |

Yes, he is an amazing builder of guitars, and Mark song tribute to him is gorgeous. I think the book is out, I really want to buy that book, and it has a forward written by Mark :) |

Me too - especially after viewing the trailer I'm super excited! Yes, I'm sure it will be on U-Tube but I'm hoping this will become available somehow in a HD format as I think it's going to be one I'd like to save. So fingers crossed! ....and toes, too..... just for an extra wee bit of luck! :winky: |

I keep meaning to get the computer hardware necessary to convert all my VHS tapes to CD (well, ok, not the 20 long play tapes of Star Trek :P ) but my old recordings of DS & other concerts. I've got the MK "life in Songs" on my HD recorder, and I could use the same gear to convert that . . One day I'll get round to it. .. |

I know - me too! I've got a box full of VHS tapes of concerts and music videos that I'd love to convert. It's time consuming though and there's always something else coming down the pipes..... ....Like this new show Guitar Stories! I managed to get a decent-quality copy of "A Life in Songs" from a friend in England, shortly after it first aired there. He's here in Canada now too though, so not an option this time, but I'm hoping I'll be able to get a copy of this Guitar Stories episode from someone. We'll see...... |

I really enjoyed the programme but was a bit disappointed that we didn't actually see Mark playing his original MK1 Pensa Suhr or his Monteleone Isabella because they went to New York to see Rudy & John ( although you did see MK playing a very flashy Monteleone & the new blue Pensa) . . I can just see him telling Kitty "look what followed me home !" The Monteleone "spring" is one of the "four seasons" series that was on display at the Metropolitan museum of art - here's a link with photos of the others in the series. CLICK ME : the Four Seasons He really is a master of his art. The workmanship is unbelievable, although these are probably a bit "flashy" for me personally. |

Thanks, Serenade. I was wondering how we on the other side of the pond could view this. I really enjoyed it, and added it to favorites for further viewing. :waytogo: Does anyone know the answer to one question, though? Since this viewing is by invite only, rather than being able to do a search for it, is there any way Warner will be able to get it yanked like they did with A Life in Song, since this one also includes clips from the DVDs? There was one site that was hosting A Life in Song in its entirety, Vimeo, I think, and although it was on the net for quite a while longer than the other clips of A Life, it eventually was also yanked this spring. I always have to chuckle to myself when Mark comes out with his comment about not being worthy to play a Monteleone! I would really like to know who he thinks should play one! Yes, Happy Birthday QJF ! :fingers: I'm sure I read on Guy's site that when they were recording Monteleone Mark was playing the Isabella & Richard another acoustic and it wasn't quite right, so they swapped guitars and the recording ended up with Richard playing his part on the Monteleone. Nothing in the recording diary but this picture, perhaps there was a question on the forum asking why Richard was playing it. Posted Image |

Happy birthday, QJF! And thanks for the link, Serenade! Really interesting stuff. I never knew that guitars could be so beautiful! I had so been looking forward to seeing the whole programme, not just the trailer, and now I've already watched it three times in case it's going to be removed all of a sudden, as Linda suspected. |

Thanks Elina :) I really enjoyed the documentary. It was interesting to see the relationship between John and Mark, you can see they are still great friends. And It might also be the first time I've seen Mark drive a car!! funny how Mark and John both drive Mercedes :) We would have all liked to watch a Beatles Anthology length documentary about Mark but I really enjoyed this show. John is a good presenter. It was great the watch Mark play some amazing licks with the gorgeous blue Pensa :) And to see Monteleone's reaction about Mark's song about him was so touching. |

Thank you so much serenade! I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I thought John did a very good job presenting and narrating the show and it was especially nice to see Mark in a relaxed, natural setting, just talking about some of his favourite guitars and playing them. Other than that.... it was just too short. I found myself wishing they would have gone on for several more episodes with Mark. :winky: |

Yeah, James, I had noticed the place for birthdays. I just usually forget to look! When I have, no one has been listed, so that just causes that circle to go around again! B) Now, please tell me, what is the alllure of a ukulele? Although I have seen the guys use them on the meet-and-greet on the Real Live Roadrunning video, and grew up hearing them on Hawaiian music, I could never be convinced they were a 'serious' instrument.' (Part of that may be due to the fact that at one time, you could buy a plastic one with plastic strings as a toy for the kids! That sure didn't help!) And yes, I know they have a different sound from a bazouki, cavaquenho, tipple, or cittern. It was just never a sound I could get into. Of course, my brother plays 5-string bluegrass banjo, and I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea, either! :P So enlighten me, please. :) Back on topic, I enjoyed Guitar Stories thoroughly. And I also was somewhat surprised to see Mark driving a Mercedes. I kind of thought from something Guy had said some time back, that both he and Mark were Porsche men. Did I remember that wrong? Of course, I doubt that a cameraman, etc. would have fit in the Porsche with John and Mark! Mark and Monteleone. Two of a kind, humble men! I still wonder, though, who Mark thinks is worthy to play one! Didn't they also say, or did I read it, that Mark also has one of the Spring Monteleones? I wonder if it has found its way onto any recording yet? I think there are several other guitars that might me included if a longer program had been done. That would have been nice. Mark has such a collection - a walk through would probably be quite an education in itself! |
