Hi Linda, I think birthdays would only show up for those who have actually included them in their profile. Many folks - including you and me apparently - didn't do that. :what: And I have to add that like you I was negatively influenced by the preponderance of cheap, toy ukuleles that were around when I was a kid. More recently though I've been exposed to some better quality instruments being used by some very respected players on contemporary pop recordings. It seems they're coming back into vogue. The nice thing about ukuleles is that they have the benefit of being extremely portable, and they're more easily cared for and maintained than a bouzouki or cittern etc. P.S. Ooops! Apologies to QJF if I jumped in uninvited. I'll shut up now...... |

Hi, 3Pints, I'm sure QJF will get back to us eventually! :) In the mean time . . . Portability I can definitely understand. When I was a kid, I wanted to be in the music program at school, and there was my sister's violin sitting around not in use, so guess what I got to learn to play! The learning was okay, but I'm not sure that I was ever better than passable. When our bass player graduated, I was asked if I would do a real quick learn on it, so I played that for about 3 years. Since it and I were about the same size, portable it wasn't! Then, when I was a senior, our cellist had graduated and a big guy had learned the bass, so I was asked to learn cello. It was more my size, but it also wasn't particularly portable, either. <_< I remember how I had hated having to walk about a mile to a mile and a half hauling the violin as well as my books, so you know I definitely didn't haul either the bass or the cello! How I envied those flute and picollo players! And birthdays. I've gotten to the stage and/or age where I would rather not think of them! |

The Ukulele thing is as 3Pints says, It is a very portable instrument. Sometimes when I travel I'd like my guitar with me, but at times a full size acoustic guitar is not practical. But a Ukulele really it. You can buy top quality models now. I'd like to get a mahogany one, that would match my mahogany Epiphone acoustic guitar :) But another reason, is I'd like the challenge of learning another instrument, and they say the Ukulele chords are very easy. I like the idea of being able to play lot's of instruments, like Mike Oldfield <_< the first track I wrote and recorded had 8 instruments, and I played 7 of them. Back on topic :) Mark and Guy are well known for their love of Porsche, not something I can share with them I'm afraid. But I am sure Mark uses the Merc like a day to day car. I think he also has a Range Rover for daily use too. It's a shame this documentary was so short, because John Illsley said there was lot's of film cut from it. Do I detect a DVD/Blu-Ray release coming? |

Hi Linda, I love your story as it reminded me of my high school music classes. I had begun to learn the guitar before I started high school but sadly guitar wasn't an option in high school music class. I loved the sound of French Horn so I decided to take that up instead.... for all of about 3 weeks! Brutally difficult to learn, and a pain to carry. :( I quickly switched to clarinet and happily played that for 3 years. In the meantime from listening to rock music, I had fallen in love with the sound of the electric bass guitar and I bought myself one. By the time I left high school I was already playing in a couple of bands and earning a bit of money on the side! The clarinet didn't prove quite as lucrative :what: (not to mention it didn't have quite the same "cool-ness" factor!) so sadly it got left behind. B) I've played a number of other instruments over the years as well, but primarily it's been bass and guitars for me ever since. I seem to recall from the video Mark Knopfler: A Life In Song that he may have learned a bit of piano and harmonica at one point, but maybe I'm imagining that. Anyway, I think it's really helpful to have at least some knowledge on more than one instrument. |

Hi QJF, Yea, I've been kind of intrigued lately by the idea of learning ukulele as well. I played mandolin for some years but eventually decided that I just wasn't comfortable playing on such a narrow neck. Ukulele might be just my cup of tea. :) Back to the TV Documentary "Guitar Stories" though, yeah it would be great to see that on DVD with some of the edited footage included. But I suspect that wouldn't happen at least until they have a full season wrapped. Fingers crossed! :winky: |

So, is there going to be other guitarists choosing their favourite guitars too then? If so, I wonder if John is presenting all of it. Mark has said that he learned piano from his uncle Kingsley, boogie woogie piano, how much he learned is another matter. But he did write some songs from the Love Over Gold album at the piano, so he must have some knowledge. |

I was curious about that too QJF...my guess is that the narrator is selected due to their relationship with the guitarist..purely speculation of course. |

So maybe Ozzy interviewing Tony Iommi? Yikes! :o Mark presenting Eric Clapton might be a nice one though; or Adam Clayton presenting the Edge; Roger Daltrey presenting Pete Townshend, maybe? Alex James could present Damon Albarn (and hopefully he'd talk a little bit about cheese as well, or maybe do a whole show on cheese - I'd listen to that too!) :P I'd absolutely love to see/hear Colin Moulding interviewing Andy Partridge. And Guy Garvey can present pretty much whoever the hell he chooses because regardless of the subject he'll just make it so damn real and compelling..... But John Illsley did a great job with the segment on Mark so maybe he's found a new career as an interviewer/presenter? :waytogo: |

LOL !    To make it easier for Ozzy, Tony's guitars might be the first one he learned on, then 5 different SGs      |

Or if they keep the Bass player being the presenter, how about Roger Waters presenting David Gilmour's guitars  |

No, I've seen nothing and only the MK episode shows up on a Google search. it may be one of those "series" that are intermittent! I've checked the Sky Arts listings for the coming week and there is no episode scheduled for Tuesday ( the night of the week that the MK show was aired). |

I have started to wonder if this is a one off show. Surley if there were more episodes they would have advertised them by now, or after Mark's show. But there has been nothing. A bit strange if it was a series of shows. It might have just been something John Illsley went to Sky with, and offered to make the show for them? |

I thought I would resurrect this topic a bit. I found the show on UTube tonight, and having nothing better to watch, watched it again. I always find it interesting how much one kind of slides over when watching something for the first time! :wallbang: Anyway, what I guess I hadn't picked up on the first time around was that Mark and John had been doing duet gigs in pubs and clubs prior to forming the band. I don't really remember hearing that before this show. Another thing I kind of chuckled about to myself was watching Mark in Rudy's shop with the blue Pensa. He couldn't stop stroking it - caressing it. It must have had a good feel! I think that was the one he used on Redbud Tree, wasn't it? Or if not that song, somewhere on the new album. The other thing that struck me was Monteleon's humbleness about Mark's song. He seemed genuinely stunned by having a song written about what he probably considers kind of mundane things. And such a great song it is, too! :) I was really happy to see that the Warner Bro. police hadn't found this video, yet. I did notice some cuts used from Alchemy and maybe On the Night, too. It would be a real shame if they yanked this video, too. |
