I thought it would be interesting to find out exactly where Mark's fans are from in the world, I wonder how many countries we are all from? I'll start. I live in Southampton, England. |

Hi, I'm from Darlington, in County Durham (UK) 35 miles south of the Tyne (& home of the Railways). I have an affinity for the Tyneside area as between the ages of 11 & 16 I used to spend much of my school summer holidays staying with my Grandparents in their caravan in South Shields (at the mouth of the river) and I'd come home with the beginnings of a Geordie accent! |

Yep, Shivers down the spine in fact :toothless:. I visited the Spanish City with my family when my daughter was young, & have a photo of her on one of the Carousels . . . and a blurry shot of the Waltzers! :smoker: (pre-digital - I'll have to dig it out and scan it!) It closed down in the early 2000's but is being redeveloped at the present time to include a hotel, 50's style diner and a "pleasure garden" (I'm thinking that means fun-fair) Posted Image |

LOL, wouldn't that be something :-) But I can imagine the whole thing by night, and the allure it had, things that could happen. And the big wheel keep on turning, neon burning up above... Right, I was born in Ghent (Belgium) and go to university there (so I'm staying there during the week), but I actually live in Maldegem (nothing interesting to see there). Ghent was one of the most important cities in the Middle Ages, bigger than e.g. London (only preceded by Paris and some Italian cities) due to its industry and port. Charles V, who would later be the Holy Roman emperor, was born here. Oh, I don't know, it's just a beautiful city with some nice history stuff. Posted Image |

Yes. Lovely picture, MKB. I know a little bit about Ghent and its long history from various books and of course the Internet. It really does seem a very beautiful city. That's one of the things I miss most about home too - and Europe in general - that sense of history and the culture. |

So you mean where we are at the present time, right? I'm currently living in Vancouver, BC. Sadly we're under strict orders not to post any pictures in public forums. The reason for that is because if you saw this place, you'd probably want to move here too. Of course personally I'd love that, but I guess since the city is hemmed in by mountains on one side and the ocean on the other, we're simply running out of room! :( |

I'm from Freehold, New Jersey, USA. Something notable? Freehold is also the hometown of Bruce Springsteen. His song "My Hometown" is about Freehold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Hometown Oh and 3Pints, I call your bluff on the 'posting pics of Vancouver' ban. Running outta room... what a bunch'cha baloney. :P Sofie, your picture is breathtaking. What a beautiful place!! And thanks, too, for the pictures of the Spanish City. I love seeing all of these great locations! |

I'm from Finland, the country of the midnight sun, the northern lights, Santa Claus - and the Nokia mobile phones. In my opinion there's absolutely nothing interesting for a foreign tourist to see in my tiny hometown which is situated in the middle of nowhere in the forest covered central part of the country. |

Elina, I thought you might be somewhat amused by something my father told me many years ago. At the time, my husband and I were living in the northern part of the state of Minnesota - mostly some hills and heavy forest cover, mostly coniferous forest where we were. We were on a mostly flat area, and had large pine trees about 80'-90' tall surrounding the forestry station we were living in. We had moved to Minnesota from the state of Montana, which is in the western third of the US. The western third of the state is mountainous (similar to the terrain in southern Germany, Switzerland, etc.) with mostly coniferous forests above river valleys that have some flood plain. I had grown up just on the eastern edge of those mountains where you could look out in any direction and see mountains. My folks were visiting us in Minnesota and my Dad said something to the effect of, "my God girl! There is nothing to look at here!" I told him that I looked at those clouds up there above the trees and imagined they were hiding mountains! Maybe that's what you should do! |

Funny! That's exactly what I sometimes do here! About twenty years ago we lived for one year in the northernmost part of the country, just next to the Norwegian border, which isn't far from the Arctic Sea, and the landscape there is very different from the rest of the country. Not exactly mountainous like Switzerland but there are high hills called 'fells' there, and almost no forests at all, crystal clear lakes and rivers with wild salmon, large herds of reindeer roaming free on top of the fells... very beautiful! What I miss most of that place is the spaciousness of the landscape. If you went up on the fell in winter, on skis or on a snowmobile, you could see miles and miles away over the snowy hills that looked just like whipped cream. Nowadays we sometimes go on holiday there. |

I, at least, can't claim any tranquility! Living on the edge of a mountain range as my town is situated, weather changes prevent tranquility! Our winds prevail from the west northwest here, and as weather systems move across the country from the Pacific Ocean, as the system roughly follows the contour of the land, by the time it reaches here, we have very strong down-slope winds, nearly always. This can be great in spring when we have what is called a chinook - the wind is rushing from the tops of the mountains down into the valleys with enough force to make the temperature rise from below zero degrees Fehrenheit to 40 or 50 degrees F. in ten minutes or so! possibly as much as 60 degrees rise in that time. Our snow doesn't stay on the ground all winter because of this usually, either. On another note, yesterday morning arose to our first snow/rain showers persisting all day, into the night and also today. This has been good in that it has finally cleared the air of the tremendous amounts of wildfire smoke we have been having for the past month or month and a half. So I don't think tranquil describes this place except once in a while for a short time. When I lived in northern Minnesota, in areas where there were no forests, we would get that untracked snow going on forever, but no high places to see far away. |

That's so great that we are from such varying places, good to see how far Mark's music reaches: England(ok, not far, lol) USA Canada Belgium Findland :) And yes, 3Pints, I did mean where we are living now :) Another interesting fact about Southampton, it is the only place that is mentioned in songs by both Pink Floyd and The Beatles. Pink Floyd have a song called Southampton Dock, and in The Ballad of John and Yoko is the line "Standing at the dock, at Southampton" |

Hello, MKB! Actually the tranquility is what I like about living in the countryside. And, as Linda suggested, it never gets boring, because the weather changes and there are the four different seasons, which are all equally beautiful to me.(Well, perhaps I don't like November very much, when there's usually not any snow yet, and all the bright autumn colours are gone.) I've lived almost all my life in the countryside, so perhaps that's the reason why I don't like the bustle of the city, too many people, too many cars... Of course it's nice to visit a city with beautiful old buildings and many interesting places, but I wouldn't like to live there. But, having said that, I can easily understand that many people enjoy that urban atmosphere, just like the guy in RCS: "We've got it going on" :) |

That's good. Because I'm definitely not from Vancouver. It's just where I've ended up (after about 8 other towns in 4 different countries!) Vancouver is the kind of place you might want to be if you like to have a lot of outdoor recreational opportunities nearby AND have access to all the amenities of city life. It's often said that you can go skiing on a mountain in the morning and sailing in the ocean that same afternoon. There are lots of places to go camping, hiking, climbing, snow-shoeing, and kayaking is very popular too. And people often engage in these sorts of things in the evenings after work and on days off. And also, thanks to the temperate climate, I can ride my bicycle to work all year round! Songs? Hmmm..... the first time I remember hearing Vancouver mentioned in a song was "My Uncle" - a catchy, up-tempo protest song from 1969 by the Flying Burrito Brothers: A letter came today from the draft board With trembling hands I read the questionnaire It asked me lots of questions 'bout my mama and papa Now that ain't what I call exactly fair A sad old soldier once told me a story About a battlefield that he was on He said a man should never fight for glory He must know what is right and what is wrong So I'm headin' for the nearest foreign border Vancouver may be just my kind of town 'Cause they don't need the kind of law and order That tends to keep a good man underground, oh yeah Now, I don't know how much I owe my uncle But I suspect, it's more than I can pay He's askin' me to sign a three-year contract I guess I'll catch the first bus out today So I'm headin' for the nearest foreign border Vancouver may be just my kind of town 'Cause they don't need the kind of law and order That tends to keep a good man underground No they don't need the kind of law and order That tends to keep a good man underground |

Yes, I understand. I personally would think it's quite nice, I think Vancouver would really be a place for me. But I had a friend who moved to Norway and she returned after a year and a half because she got too lonely. So I figured it might not all be that great. |

Hi MKB, I thought the same thing when I first moved here. But I soon made some very good friends and started to feel quite comfortable here. Of course the relatively mild climate helped a lot, too! Anyway, because of the outdoor recreational opportunities, Vancouver seems to attract a lot of young people from all over the world. Where I work we are often hiring people who are on international work visas and who just want to check out the city and the lifestyle for 6 months or a year. It makes it a very interesting place to be..... |
