This is probably a stupid question, but does anyone know why Wild Theme is called by that name? Is it a common term for something in music theory? The melody is the same as in Going Home, but the two tracks are still different. I prefer the more delicate Wild Theme. When I heard it for the first time and saw Mark play it in a Youtube clip, it felt like a revelation to me. I had never heard such beautiful music being played with an electric guitar. I mean I hadn't realized that an electric guitar could be used to generate so gentle and melodious sounds. :o
Whenever I hear someone bash rock musicians and claim that classical music is the only real music, I tell them to check out Wild Theme by Mark Knopfler! :)

Hi, Elina, Well, in response to your question about Wild Theme, I'm sure not an expert! I have to honestly say that I have no idea why the song is called Wild Theme. I finally was able to see the movie a year or so ago; our local library where I used to live had it. I only saw it once, so I can't say for sure, but I think if I remember correctly, in the film the song accompanied the arrival of the member of the US oil company negotiating team into Scotland. I think it kind of provided an audible introduction to that part of the world - wild sea coast, small village, slower life style, etc. Going Home, the other song with the same theme, to me sounds like what I would call a triumphant processional (think wedding music - the pomp and circumstance on the arrival of the bride, and the recessional of the bride and groom down the aisle - triumphantly!). Anyway, to me, Going Home says we triumphed over big business. Wild Theme always brings tears to my ears, it seems so heart rending. And maybe that's what it is supposed to convey - what could happen to the Scottish countryside and coast if the oil company is successful.

Just a wild guess on my part. I haven't been in any discussions of Mark's movie music, but that is how it strikes me. :P

Both themes are used in the final scenes in the movie.."Wild Theme" as Mac boards the helicopter and leaves Furness for Houston...and "Going Home" after Mac arrives back to his empty apartment..what he thought he would call 'home'..then comes the phone call to the red call box back in Furness...he's "Going Home". Don't know why he chose the title for "Wild Theme"...maybe because the village was more rustic than what he was used to..but "Going Home" is obvious...here is the closing scene..

Thank you, Linda and Hop, for your insights! The title Wild Theme could really refer to the wild countryside. It just occured to me that it might be a musical term, I wouldn't know, I've never studied music myself or played any instrument.
Thanks Hop, for the link!

I think what has been said is correct, to the oil man, coming to the Scottish coast, it would seem WILD, coming from the big city lights in Texas. Although thematically Wild Theme and Going Home are similar, they are both different musical pieces. Something I think Mark is clever at doing, and has done again, on Cal, with The Road, and The Long Road, also on Metroland, with Metroland Theme (Instrumental) and Metroland, the track with singing.
