Hi, all, I've just been listening to a live performance of Daddy's Gone to Nashville, maybe done on the Shangri-La tour, or at least a while back. I believe Danny was probably playing drums and during the middle part, I was hearing what I thought might be spoons being played. Years ago, I heard someone play them, but just fooling around rather than seriously, so I can't be sure if that was what I heard. Does anyone know if I'm right? It is definitely a very different sound.

I guess I've just answered my own question. I found a live clip from the KTGC tour in '08 in Rotterdam that shows Danny playing the drums, and I'm not sure what he is hitting with his drumsticks, but it sounds just like spoons! On the audio clip I listened to before, it didn't sound like any regular percussion instrument at all. I think it was a bootleg, so . . .

Here is the clip showing him using sticks on something.

Hi Linda,
it sounds & looks very much like he is just hitting the rim of his snare drum. just "clicking" rather than hitting the drum skins.
although it's not a track I'm desperate to hear live (and I'd much rather hear others in a limited setlist) this year's version sounds like fun with Ian playing the Washboard !
When you point your finger 'cause your plan fell through, You've got 3 more fingers pointing back at you.
I reserve the right to change my opinion at a moment's notice - Why should it just be a woman's prerogative?

Yeah, I know that's what is somewhat surprising, about just hitting the rim. Where my confusion was, I think, is that the clip they play on PI web radio is maybe the same one as the video clip at Bercy Paris, also in 2008. At least what Mark says at the beginning is the same. When I played the clip (not a real video - just audio with Mark's picture), it also sounds like he is hitting the rim. On the radio, it definitely sounds like spoons, not just a click! Thats why I was kind of curious. Spoon playing has been around a long time, like the washboard, but not many people can really play them as a good bit of percussion, and they have quite a distinctive sound, I think.

This song is also not my favorite, but I'll be curious to hear the Ian version.

Hi, Linda,
I don't know if it's spoons or sticks, but why is the name of the topic Daddy's Gone to Nashville? :P

That's the title of a song on Ragpicker's Dream. Another southern connection of Mark's, this time probably referring to a farm family, the father of which has gone to Nashville, Tennessee, to get work. The wife apparently feels like if he doesn't bring back some money for them, he shouldn't bother coming back at all.

Yes but isn't the actual title of the song Daddy's Gone to Knoxville, not Nashville? <_<

It's okay, Linda! Besides, I hadn't even noticed that slip myself when I read your post for the first time earlier.

Yes, I agree with what's been said about hitting the rim of the drum, a common trick, which works really well.
I have always really liked this song, I think It's a good example of Mark making a song that sound like it was written and recorded back in the 20's or 30's. It does have that old sound, which is something Mark is always striving to get to.

Hi, QJF, Yeah, its an old sound, so that's why I thought it might be spoons. They were used a long time ago in lieu of having drums, in rural areas, usually in casual musical get togethers.

You're absolutely right suprlinda,
That is exactly what I think Mark had in mind and I was even sure I'd seen a performance video somewhere where spoons were used - likely in one of their more intimate performances like a meet & greet or something. (No luck in my search so far though....)

In any case, that is almost certainly the sound that Danny is trying to emulate in the video you linked to below. It's quite common for drummers to use rim-shots in place of spoons and/or other percussion simply because it saves them having to drop the sticks and use something else, then switch back.

... much like all the traditional blues sounds on Privateering! <_<
