Mark has a new song called Oldest surfer on the beach on Jimmy Buffett's new album which is released 20th August. Mark also plays guitar on the track. This is great news, Mark just keeps on giving us more and more.

Hot & sweaty, loud & greasy"

I believe there was a comment on AMIT this morning wondering if maybe Mark had written it during the Shangri-La era. The lyrics certainly sound like some old surfer dude! If not from that time period, one wonders what the inspiration was? <_< JB's voice ought to make for an interesting sound.

I was thinking it was from the Shangri-La time too, when I read the song title. The Lyrics are below:

The sun’s dropping out of the picture,
Soon be time to move,
It hasn’t been a real big day,
But I don’t have a thing to prove,
I’ve still got the old ghost rider,
I still surf old style,
I’ll go out beyond the breakers,
Sit alone and rest a while

Chorus:
There’s nothing that I won’t do,
No place I’m trying to reach,
Only time is now more precious to,
The oldest surfer on the beach

I stopped searching for perfection,
Many waves ago,
What really matters is the hear and now,
That’s about all I know,
Gonna catch me a big ‘ole roller,
Sun settin’ on the sea,
Ride it in on her glass shoulder,
The water cold and grey like me

There’s nothing that I won’t do,
No place I’m trying to reach,
Only time is now more precious to,
The oldest surfer on the beach
The oldest surfer on the beach….

I was trying to work out what kind of music would go with these lyrics, I was thinking something uptempo like Twisting By The Pool
"Yeah, me and my mate like ac-dc
Hot & sweaty, loud & greasy"

I downloaded this song from Amazon.co.uk today, and have listened to it 4 times, and I really like it. It's the first time I'm heard Jimmy Buffett too. I like Jimmy's singing on this song, and I can hear why Mark gave it to him, although I'm sure Mark would have sung it well, it does really suit Jimmy, Mark plays beautiful guitar fills throughout the song, I love Mark's songs in this style, and it shows to me why he just could not continue with Dire Straits, this type of song would not have fitted with that group. The song is very laid back, and reminds of Shangri-La era songs, I read someone saying it reminded them of Ticket To Heaven, I'm not really getting that, but I really like this song, Mark plays some lovely clean guitar on the outro, and it ends with the sound of waves lapping on the beach :)
