Someone on AMIT brought up a new (Sept. 2) article on the site ConcertTour.org about Mark, calling it "Best Things Mark Knopfler Has Done Since Splitting With Dire Straits." It has some very nice things to say about Mark and his prolific writing career, in particular some of his sound tracks and solo albums, including Shangri-La and Privateering.

Here is the link: ConcertTour Article

Enjoy :)

I appreciate the comparisons drawn between the soundtracks and the solo albums... I've never heard the 'Cal' soundtrack (I know, horror!) but at least now I know where "Father and Son" is from. I'm intrigued (thinking Metroland and Last Exit to Brooklyn)....

Hi, KitKat, Yeah, that is 'horrors' that you haven't explored the sound tracks! :cheekyb: They are all such great works, and I love them all. I'm glad you figured out Father and Son, now. As QJF says in another thread, the Cal soundtrack is great, too. All of that movie music is well worth your time, effort and money to listen to.

I have not seen either of these movies, but from what I have read about the story line of Last Exit, it is a kind of 'dark' movie. Mark's music totally reflects that kind of feeling, so it is unlike any other music he has ever written. That one, he didn't do any of the recording either. Guy did it all. If it weren't for the credits, you would never guess Mark was involved at all, because it is so very different. Different, but excellent, also.

Metroland is different than the others in other ways. According to the story line, it takes place primarily in Paris, especially in the clubs, and they used a lot of the existing music which was popular during the time frame of the movie - the late '60s. So the movie and soundtrack have music other than Mark's in it, although one of those club pieces is Sultans! He wrote about a half dozen (I think) new pieces for the movie, as well. Also, all excellent, as you would expect from Mark. :yay:

Yes KitKat, you need to check out Cal, maybe you should buy Screenplaying, which is a compilation album of Mark's soundtracks to Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride, and Last Exit To Brooklyn. It doesn't have all the tracks, but the highlights.

I have not seen Last Exit... either, but I remember reading Mark saying it was a a strange time when he was composing the music because he said he was watching scenes of rape in the afternoon (from the film) and playing live with Eric Clapton at night, which really must have been weird, and like Linda says, Mark had very little to do with the playing on the the soundtrack, but his guitar is heard on one track, the rest of the music was played by Guy Fletcher. I think It's Mark's most serious and deep work musically, and is at times very beautiful, which is amazing considering the themes in the film.
