Good morning all. Guy is finally back on his forum after 2 weeks. Someone queried possible additional tour dates and his response was no, but they would be back soon. The reason, he said, is that he and Mark are BACK IN THE STUDIO THIS WEEK! :hehe: New album, here we come! Also, I wondered if they will come out with it next year, touring in the fall on this side of the pond, to make up for our 5 dates for Privateering.

This is great news!

Well, I hope it's for a new MK album that they're in the studio and not just to support someone else's recording!

Agreed, Knopfling. Mark seems to be writing quite prolifically at the moment, so yeah... it would be wonderful if they were actually recording some material for a new MK solo album!
Cheers,

It is good news indeed, I hope It's a new MK album too, this is normally about the time of year, Guy and Mark get together to start the beginnings of a new album.

I just read Guy's forum and it would appear that they are indeed starting work on a new album. I noticed Guy didn't respond to the first question about it, but as I read further, a bit more leaked out in his answers. He did admit that yes, he and Mark are working on new songs, and finally, said something about how about a new album? I thought that was pretty conclusive.

He also said we shouldn't consider the October dates as even a mini-tour, just a few shows, and that the reason for it being so short is Mark's desire to get back into the studio and work on new songs.

Hooray!

That's amazing, I can't believe how prolific Mark is, we are being spoilt. And it's surprising that Guy is so forthcoming about it, normally he says he can't say at the moment.

Yeah, I just had a thought about Mark's recording. I wonder if some outfit gives an award for the hardest working artist? It seems to me like he would win it by a mile! And we are definitely being spoiled. I guess we just live it up while it lasts! alch

It is surprising that Guy has said as much as he has, so I would guess Mark had approved of that bit being "leaked" this far in advance. And maybe, it might also have to do with the new label. It might be that Warner didn't want that kind of stuff revealed until things were recorded and on their way to the public, whereas Universal is more open about it. Although I don't read the mags on who is doing what, it seems like some artists get publicity as soon as they go into the studio for one song let alone a whole album's worth, and others you don't hear about them recording anything until the new album is on the shelf in the store. Maybe that is a function of their popularity status with the public, too.

Anyway, I think we will be the big gainers in this deal - new album, new tour, etc., and if we are really lucky, a DVD.

I'd like to think too that since Mark has done a big European tour for Privateering, AND since he has a new US distribution deal in place, that he might do a North American tour next to promote the new album.....

Just a thought...... (now, where'd I put my beer?) :winky:

I agree with you 3Pints. It seems to me they need to come over to this side of the pond before going back to Europe, and doing places they haven't been to for a while or maybe, not at all, just like they did this past tour on the continent.

Guy mentioned this morning that he will be putting up a recording diary, perhaps in several weeks. He said he's too busy right now, but will be doing it soon. That will be fun to find out how it goes along, although he will probably be teasing us, leaving more questions in our minds than answers, or anyway, knowledge. :P

This current, promotional mini-tour notwithstanding, and with a new album apparently now in the works, by the time Mark & Co. get around to doing another North American tour it will have been at least 4 years since the Get Lucky Tour!

It's almost hard to believe..... :(

You are correct 3Pints. It is hard to believe how long ago it was since the Get Lucky tour! I discovered Mark's music just a hair too late to be able to go to the concert that was in the area I lived at the time. :( Bob Dylan was a big deterrent as far as I was concerned, so I skipped that tour, too. If all goes as it has in the past, it appears that the next tour would begin in the spring of 2015. I guess we are pretty spoiled with Mark's prolific writing - I know with some artists, it is many years between albums, but some of them just tour rehashing their previous music.

I can hardly wait to see, and hear, what he will come up with this time. I don't think anyone can claim Mark's new stuff is just a spin off of the old as you can with some of the others.

"Bob Dylan was a big deterrent....."

Haha, yes! Too true, Linda! By all accounts there were some wonderful songs and great moments in Mark's shows but for the same reason as you I did not even consider going to see that tour either. <_<

I also have to agree we are lucky that Mark is in a such a prolific period right now. And he's creating such good work, too. I have said before that if he gave up touring to concentrate on writing, I'd be totally okay with it.
Cheers,

I would be ok if he gave up touring too. Just think how many more songs we'd get. But i know Mark does enjoy playing live, and most of his songs take on a new live when played live so i doubt he'd stop touring any time soon. What I'd like is a documentary about the recording and touring of the new album like th Arena documentary for Making Movies.

I couldn't agree more 3Pints..I'd be perfectly fine with studio albums and few or no tours. But..what we have to remember about Mark...is how much touring and writing go hand in hand. He is passionate about both ..loves touring and writing. What seems to be extraordinary about Mark is how much he writes WHILE on tour. I will never forget how quickly Mark and Guy were back in the studio starting work on "Get Lucky" following on the heals of the KTGC tour. They finished the tour at the end of July..and were back in the studio in early September. When Guy was asked about it..his response was to say that Mark was writing during every idle moment on the tour. And he claims that he is a lazy person..I can only shake my head. :P

It also makes you wonder how much he throws out, I'm thinking about his reaction to the DS song Sucker For Punishment.

Good morning QJF..didn't mean to over run your post :) . I would also love to see a new documentary..a peek inside the process. I can't help but feel that traveling on the tours provides Mark with so much material to write about..it seems that inspiration lies just around every corner for him.

I will be really sad when MK eventually gives up touring! It is so special and wonderful to see him performing in front of me - the songs really come to life compared with the studio version. In fact once I have heard a song live, I rarely listen to it again on the album.

Not to worry Val..we are all just being speculative. Mark loves touring too much to hang it up. I will say though that I am fed up with being on the wrong side of the pond during every tour  . I can't imagine what its like for fans in Australia and South America who never get to see Mark on tour anymore.

Yes, I do feel sorry for fans that don't get the opportunity to see him as much as we in Europe do and I realise how very fortunate we are. As much as I love seeing him live, I wouldn't like him to continue past his sell-by date, like some I can think of!

Lol!! 'Sell-by date'! ..I like that one Val! Yes there are plenty of artists out there who are still touring waaaay past their respective shelf life..but we don't need to worry about that with Mark..he always seems to mix up his music a bit to keep it interesting. So many fans complain about the lack of DS material in his sets..I say bring on the new stuff!

Yes I'm a "solo fan" too! I think his new material is getting better and better all the time and I don't think it will be very long before there is no DS on the setlist. I'm sure that won't please everyone, though!

The Dire Straits thing is worth mentioning as i very much doubt we'd see Mark as often as we do if he was still fronting the band, like he said it became to big. Touring as a solo artist must be easier and cheaper for him. I can't separate DS and Mark solo, both have their merits and both are Mark

Boy..did I miss this place when I was sidelined with my little bout of surgery. Nothing like a little banter about my favorite artist along with a good cup of coffee in the morning :waytogo:
As I sit here reading these posts..I went from listening to TR from Basel in '92..to Mark's collaboration with Jimmy Buffett.."Oldest surfer on the beach" and it occurred to me just how Mark has evolved as a musician and a writer over the decades. As the dexterity in his fingers seems to wane a bit these days (lets face it folks..the TR of today is a shadow of it's former self)..his songwriting has become multidimensional. He has the uncanny ability to find the most obscure story..and weave it into a polished piece of art. Yes ..the riffs are still there..but they serve to support the music ..as opposed to the past when they were out front. I guess what I'm getting at is why Mark's career has had such longevity. How many artists can we think of that are as diverse in their musical talent as Mark is? Producer, writer, composer of soundtracks and ..oh yeah..the guy can still play a mean lick. Why does Mark still write, produce, tour and ..well..just play? Simple..because he can!

Yes, I agree with that Hops, it does annoy me when I read comments by certain "Fans" on other forums complaining about what Mark plays, not enough DS songs etc. The fact is he doesn't have to tour at all if he didn't want to, he does it because he enjoys it, not because fans want him to. We all know he's not going to play the guitar hero thing like the Alchemy days, but he is still a greater player than almost anyone I can think of, for me it's always about his not selection more than his speed of playing, and on that, there is no-one better
