I noticed today on amazon.co.uk that on 25th November there will be a vinyl box set release of all 6 dire straits studio albums. It doesn't have anymore information than that yet.

That's kinda cool! I cringe guessing the price tag, though.

Cool. And I was just drafting my annual letter to Santa when I read this, too! B)

Seriously though, if they would throw in a bonus disc or two, with all the non-album singles, alternate takes, and any other extras I might actually have to consider it!
Cheers,

Oops, I think I started another thread about this this morning, but I did have a thought about the reasoning for this reissue. I wondered if maybe Warner still owns rights on the Dire Straits music, and Mark and Universal can't do anything in the future with it without creating the new re-mastered albums.

Any thoughts?

Oops. I just replied to Hophead's reply to a similar thread in another thread that was posted somewhere elsewhere in the forum. (Damn! I hate it when that happens!)

Anyway first of all, it's my understanding that Warner only had distribution rights - no other licenses or copyrights. So their responsibility was probably just to make sure that the material was widely available for sale and to collect distribution (sales) royalties accordingly.
There likely would have been something in the contract that said, in the event of this contract ending, Warner will continue to distribute or collect royalties until such time as Mark has a new deal AND/OR until that new distributor exercises their distribution rights for the material.

Now I should add a disclaimer here to say that,
1): I'm not a lawyer,
2): I don't have a clue what were the terms of either distribution deal, and
3): I really don't give a damn. Music is what I'm interested in - not the business of it.

Having said that, I suspect that Universal needed to legally establish themselves as the new distributor somehow and they are doing that by re-issuing the DS catalogue. Since it's unlikely to make them any real money - because the real money is in long term distribution and digital sales rights - they're doing it as a limited edition box. I suspect that's just a simple, and relatively low-cost way of getting physical hard copies of all the DS titles out onto US the market under the Universal label.

Damn! Now I really do need a beer!

Yes, I agree with that, and also, there seems to be a real surge on Vinyl at the moment, so maybe they figure people will want to buy the collection on vinyl with the full length tracks. As I said on the other thread, I am mostly interested in if the box set will have original artwork or something we've seen before.
