Kimmie Rhodes has covered Mark's song Cannibals, Kimmie released an album of cover versions earlier this year called Covers. Kimmie co-wrote Love & Happiness with EmmyLou Harris on All The Road Running. I have not been able to hear it yet though.

Hi, James. I found a link for you to listen to. The site is called beat-surrender.com and includes an article on the album, but with two links to two different songs on it.

Thanks Linda, that was different. Bit to much accordion for my liking. But great to hear a new twist on a familiar song :)

Thanks for the link, SuprLinda!
I've listened to it several times now; Here's my mini-review:

"Cannibals" is one of those song that's just been crying out to be covered by someone and Kimmie Rhodes and her band do a fabulous job on it!

Without straying from Mark's arrangement on the album Golden Heart, they manage to infuse this song with a sense of child-like fun that was only hinted at on the original.

Right from the opening drums you can hear a difference. The beat captures the feel of tribal rhythms far better than Chad Cromwell did, and the addition of maracas is a nice touch as well.
Inviting the amazing Marcia Ball to add her accordion and vocals (she takes the lead on the 2nd verse) was an inspired choice, too. Of course the Cajun sound that Mark attempted to employ is one of Marcia Ball's specialities. She manages to play it typically loose and swampy and the rest of the band rides that great feel beautifully.
And the vocals (by both gals) capture a real sense of playfulness that Mark's vocal completely lacked on the original.

All in all Kimmie Rhodes' version of "Cannibals" is, I think, one of those rare instances where the cover is not just superior, but much more fun to listen to than the original.

Anyway, that's my 3Pints worth......
Cheers,

Although I respect you opinion, I can't agree with it, for me the original is FAR better than this cover, although it is great that Mark's songs are being covered :)

Yes. Likewise, QJF. "To each their own" as they say..... opinions are as completely individual as those who offer them.

I just felt that Mark's laid-back, lazy-sounding vocal didn't do any justice to the spirit of the song. <_<
As long-time fans we are familiar with his style and we may hear things in it that others don't, but it really wasn't the kind of vocal performance the song needed. (And I'll bet Mark would agree, too!)

So I think it was just begging to be covered, and hearing the Kimmie Rhodes version (with Marcia Ball) is the first time I've really found the song enjoyable. :) They do manage to capture the spirit of the lyrics.

Mark has written and recorded a number of songs with other artists in mind or as influences. I think in some cases he actually hopes that someone will cover a particular song.

And "Cannibals" might be one of those songs.
Cheers,

You might be right there. I remember when the Golden Heart album came out and reviewers were saying that Mark was going over old ground, as in Cannibals being a new Walk of Life, and Imelda a Money For Nothing song, to me that was very narrow minded of so called music critics, but as soon as they made that connection they just would not give a song like Cannibals a chance!!

Yeah, critics certainly aren't always objective. And they aren't always fans of the artists they're reviewing either, which means they are only giving the music a cursory audition before writing their piece.

So the comparisons they make.... as you say, like "Cannibals" being a new "Walk of Life", and "Imelda" a "Money For Nothing" song, are often based on a particular sound, without really listening to the song.

Having said that, I admit I've been guilty of doing the same sometimes - although I think it's a fair defence to say that my criticisms are usually from the point of view of a dedicated fan, rather than someone who is simply tasked with writing an article on a particular topic and given a deadline. ...at least I would hope so! :what:

I have just bought this song, and maybe I was a little harsh upon first hearing it. It does have a more cajun feel than Mark's original version, I can't resist owning cover versions of Mark's songs :)

Hehe..... a true collector.

There should be an acronym for this - much like the one 3Strats applies to himself.....

I'm still annoyed that I can't get What A Wonderful World by Chris Botti and Mark Knopfler though :(

Hey QJF..... I'm pretty sure it's available as a .mp3 download.
On iTunes I think you'll find it listed as: "Chris Botti - What a Wonderful World (feat. Mark Knopfler)"

Have you tried other avenues? I know it's also on U-Tube. Do you still use googlemail?
