Sorry, this is a bit late, but Fender are celebrating their 60th Anniversary, and as part of that, they are having a vote competition to find the greatest Strat song of all time, and they have chosen 64 songs of which DS are Sultans of Swing is one of them, you can vote the song against other in rounds, so far, Sultans is doing really well, having come through 2 rounds, including winning against the mighty Comfortably Numb  it is now up against Pride & Joy, Sultans is again winning that vote with 480 against 324, if it wins, it will face either Eric Clapton's Layla or Cocaine :o
You can vote by clicking below:

I really hope Sultans wins

I've done my bit & voted for Sultans in the first 2 rounds ( & will continue to do so).
I hope I'm wrong, but I think Mark may come off second best in a head to head with EC (in this scenario) depending on the number of EC fans who have been made aware of the competition.

Mark does only have one chance to Eric's 3, well, Eric's 2, as he is going head to head with himself, but out of Eric's tracks, I think Bad Love is the best Strat song. But I think Sultans has had a bigger impact on the Strat than all 3 of Eric's, they say it was Sultans that increased sales of the guitar in the late 70's, and I think Mark's signature Strat is their best ever selling signature model.

And in early voting Sultans has taken a narrow lead. I have to admit to a bit of tactical voting against some of the other strong contenders, although I don't know if that will work.

Sultans of swing got beaten. Which is a shame as when is hear Layla i don't think about a great Strat sound, but i do when i hear Sultans.

I agree, QJF. "Layla" is not one of the songs I would point to as an example of a classic Stratocaster sound.

Anything like this that involves public voting though is ultimately bound to to be influenced by popularity as much as by objectivity.

Oh well. It's all good fun anyway..... B)

I agree with both of you...a bit of popularity may have skewed the vote. It seems to me that many people don't realize that it was Duane Allman...not EC..playing that incredible screeching solo toward the end of "Layla"...with a slide on his LP no less.

I just hate the end of Layla. I prefer the version that fades out when the slide guitar starts. Nothing against Duane, I just don't think the end "fits" the song . I think "screeching" sums it up nicely! :wobbly:

Totaly agree with that. I've never been that excited by the outro slide playing, in fact i find it very underwellming!! I do like the piano played though. I don't think Layla is the best example of a great Strat song. But that's just me.
