GREAT NORTH RUN 2014: This year's BUPA GNR takes place on the 7th of September and will be preceded by a special opening ceremony at Newcastle Quayside, Newcastle Upon Tyne, on the 4th marking its millionth finisher since the race began back in 1981. Mark has long supported the GRN and will be performing Local Hero at the opening ceremony which is expected to by televised by BBC 2.

This is great news, I hope he uses his wonderful signature strat

I doesn't say it's a new recording, but a live version from the event, but it's a digital download only and will be released September 4th, and they say Sting will also be at the event, so I wonder if he'll join Mark to play the track?

It's not a live version from the event, because it's available to download today, 1st September and the event doesn't take place until the 4th. So does this mean that the actual performance on Thursday will be playback, I wonder! I had hoped it was going to be genuinely live to then download.

I have to say I'm a little confused about this then, I have downloaded it, and am listening to it as I write this, there is crowd noise on the recording, I know that doesn't mean it is live but, the playing does sound live. I guess it could mean he recorded it live in the studio, thereby giving it a live sound.

Re-reading what it says on MK News, "Mark is releasing a specially recorded live version of Going Home" so, I'm guessing he recorded it live at British Grove studios for play back.

Hi James, As I see it there are two possibilities.

1. It is one of the 2013 live recordings.

2. A specially recorded version from BG with added audience applause to make it sound live, in front of an audience.

The second option has been done before with the NRK recordings from Kill to Get Crimson when there was applause in between every song, BUT it didn't take a detective to work out that the applause was added, because it was exactly the same each time!

Obviously, we will know when we hear the concert, if it is playback or not.

I'm going with option 2 because if it was from a 2013 show, then it has not been specially recorded at all. Guy has stated a few times this year, that there has been a lot going on at British Grove, and I think one of those things was a re-recording of Going Home!!

I don't check MK's site every day for any news, so missed this item when it came out on the 2nd. It seems that Going Home is available now or, depending on where you are in the world, shortly will be available, as a digital download. You order it on Mark's site.

Mark Knopfler News

This is great news since it was originally supposed to be available in the UK.

Yes,its good news, don't know why it took so long for it to be available to all though.

I must admit to being a little confused about this too - or at least about all the interest in it. It's a pleasant melody for sure, but from this fan's perspective it's been played to death and I don't need to hear it again. <_<

As to the current re-recording of it though..... It would appear that this was made purely for charity, with "all royalties from this digital only release being donated to Future Fund, a charity that supports children’s cancer research at the UK’s Great North Children’s hospital".
So for many, hopefully that's a good reason buy it right there. After all, there are plenty of other recordings of this wee ditty, so the only reason I can see to buy it is purely to support the charity.

Secondly, if the new version that was made available for sale was a new studio recording did Mark also actually perform it at the event? If he did, I bet there was also a recording made (local TV maybe) of that performance and for collectors and completists, it will be slightly different again!

It makes sense to record the song separately - if only to ensure that the product for sale is of good quality. And most people won't care where their download was recorded anyway. They simply want to have the song, or they want to make a donation, or both.

Anyway, that's my 2 pennies worth whilst enjoying a Sunday morning croissant and coffee.... :winky:
Cheers,
3Pints

All valid points as always 3Pints, I bought it because I'm a completist and also for the charity, but I agree it has been done many times, and I have lot's of versions of it  On the other hand, it is a classic instrumental.
