Apparently, in November, a new book about Dire Straits came out in France. I believe the author is Arnaud Devillard and it also includes an interview with Mark by Christian Eudeline. There has been a bit of discussion on AMIT about it by several people who have either read it or are in process of reading it. Several items were mentioned that came from the prologue and the first chapter that may be of interest to the group. In relation to our timeline, here are some of them.

Quote:

- Mark and David's eldest sister Ruth played cello in a local orchestra

- Mark tried to learn to play piano at 6 and violin around 11 but stopped because he was tired to learn music theory

- Sue Hercombe is mentioned as Mark's girlfriend (regarding the discussion in the Holly Vincent thread)

- When Mark and David heard the jazz band that inspired Sultans, Mark himself asked them to play "Creole Love Call", and it gave the line "...and the sultans played creole..."

- I knew that Sultans was first composed on the National in open G, but David even recall an original arrangement on piano

-  I thought that Southbound again was about his travels from Newcastle to London, but it was in fact about his travels from Buckhurst Hill and Loughton to London

- the tour with Talking Heads was planned to continue in February 78, but David Byrne was exhausted and it was cancelled

There were some other items that may come up later on, or may not. <_<

Nice one Linda! I heard of Arnaud Devillard before!
I even had been approached by him on Facebook!
On the other hand, weather you might be also interested, I heard that he is in some connection with Mark and also that Mark read the book and wrote some recension there. I believe I saw somewhere the book exist in English though I can't find it out there now?

Anyway, here is the thread about the book I've found on AMIT (and it is relatively fresh thread!):

And the another link in case someone wants to order it in French:

I have not seen any indication that it is available in English, but anything is possible. I know the poster mentioned having to use Google translator to give a sense of the second phrase - which seems to be America fantasized, or perhaps American fantasy. I would guess that as the poster gets through it, he may add more information to the AMIT thread.

Thanks Linda, that is some interesting information, I didn't know Mark tried learning the piano so young, and I didn't know about the Creole line in Sultans... that line had always puzzled me, now I know the answer :waytogo:
