I think that Going Home(Theme From Local Hero) is now a guitar standard which is a great thing for Mark, I haven't met anyone who doesn't like the track, I thought it would be a great idea to list the cover versions of the great instrumental, so in looking for them I found out 2 new ones released in the last couple of years, so I will list the artist, album and year:

Carl Verheyan - Alone - 2015
Lorin Nicholson - Strings Of Thunder - 2014
Amy Dickson - Catch Me If You Can - 2014
Urban Agnas - Urban Agnas - 1998
The Shadows - Shadows In The Night - 1993

We can add to the list as we find more covers.

I agree absolutely!
Also, when it comes to these standards I always think of Telegraph Road! Alchemy version is just amazing to me! Can't get enough - I mean that in very literal way!

Hi everyone !
I kind of love this song but I've heard about another version , which I think is better because this one is without synths .... not sure if it's a cover or not ... hope it isn't :o . Could someone enlighten me about that , please ? :)

There are 3 versions on the soundtrack album, firstly Wild Theme, which I think is the version you are talking about Justine, which has the acoustic guitar to the fore, carrying the melody, and it is joined by piano. Secondly there is Whistle Theme, which is as it sounds, it is the main Local Hero melody played with a whistle sound, however I think it was more likely a synthesizer as no whistle player is listed, the track is less than a minute and also has some acoustic guitar. Thirdly, is the track Going Home, which is the full band version, with electric guitar and drums and saxophone.

Ok , thank you ! I think I heard the " Going Home " track , but it was from A Night In London's live , I really like it ... contrary to the original one which I think has too much of an 8O's sound with typical 80's drums sound and saxophone , I love this instrument but ... for me , it doesn't sounds very well here ( it maybe was a will from the film's crew )

For some reason, my favorite version of the three is the whistle version. It is, unfortunately, way too short! I could listen to the whole song with the whistle doing the lead, even though I like the guitars, too. I also have an idea that if it is was done with a real whistle rather than a synth, it might not sound the same, as the synth has better pitch control, etc.

For me, whistle version provides that mystical if not archaic and ancient dimension...
I like it too!

There have been a lot of variations on both Going Home and Wild Theme from Mark over the years. Don't forget Dire Straits were joined by Hank Marvin to play Going Home for some shows.
