From MKNews:

Henrik Hansen, who did the short film for the Tracker album promotion, is to do a Mark Knopfler documentary scheduled for a 2018 release together with an in-concert film featuring live performances from the Tracker tour. A Tracker live album to accompany the documentary is also under consideration but not confirmed.

This is great news, looks like 2018 is going to be a big year for Mark.

More fantastic news! But I wonder why they didn't spread some of it out over this year as well as next, unless this is to be a big media splash with lots of new stuff available at the same time? I really, really hope they put together the live album. It has been more than ten years since the last one - Real Live Roadrunning. Definitely about time for another! :P

I agree Linda, I know they did make the live concerts available to buy and download after the shows but to me a live performance should be on CD, it makes it more special in my view, a download or USB seems to throwaway, and also I think Mark and Guy would be more involved in the production of a live CD, they weren't involved in the downloads/USB. I hope it is a feature length documentary aswell, like 90 minutes plus, as I feel Mark has been neglected in this regard over the years, A Life In Songs was great, but I always feel they have left out a lot of Mark's story. Nothing about his relationship with David for example, more about his film work, more about his many many musical collaborations, and that is just for starters!!

I am hoping this documentary is going to be about Mark's whole life and career as next year is going to be the 40th anniversary of the first Dire Straits album, so it would seem a great time for a celebration.

What a shocking thought, 40 years! :P And such fruitful years, too, as far as a songwriter. Hopefully, he tries for another 40!

Yes, it has been an amazing 40 years, Mark should be very proud of his legacy. It is interesting how more and more he has become a prolific songwriter, look at Making Movies, only 7 songs on that album, and Love Over Gold has only 5, I know the songs are longer but he is writing more songs these days. I think as a fan we have been spoiled with his solo work  And the fact he is still touring is a bonus.

Well said James!

(p.s. I didn't know that "spoiled" could be used in this form btw, thanks! (I would always consider it only in sence of destroy or ruin before))

Yes, the context I used the word spoiled was in that he has given us a lot. :)

I have been reading posts on another website by people saying maybe Mark should retire!!! I don't want to go into it to much but just to say that I hope the Henrik Hansen documentary will give us all something to celebrate, that being a remarkable musical career, from a man who in my view is unique.

I can't see Mark ever retiring!! Paul McCartney is still doing it at 75 so Mark has a while yet.

With all due respect QJF, I don't think that's a fair comparison. Age alone has very little to do with it. These are two very different personality types. Although they both inhabit the same artistic milieu, Paul is driven to perform; Mark is driven to write.

When The Beatles stopped playing live shows in 1966 Paul immediately began conceiving ways in which they could perform live without touring. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was an imaginary group that he envisioned sending out virtually (via the record) to perform The Beatles songs. "Magical Mystery Tour" was The Beatles going on a psychedelic bus tour. "Let It Be" was originally intended to be a Beatles 'live-in-the-studio' performance for a combination film and record.

Soon after The Beatles disbanded, Paul formed Wings for the primary purpose of touring and playing his new songs.
And to this day his focus has never changed. He continues to make records, but - or maybe even because, he truly loves going out and performing the material for a live audience.

Mark is different. Mark lives to write songs, record them, and produce them. The touring part is secondary. Yes, he enjoys touring, but Mark loves the craft of making music more than the actual live performance.

So I believe Mark will give up touring at some point soon. I can easily see him working in the studio; settling into a routine of writing and recording, making Mark Knopfler records and adding his guitar to other people's records.

And personally, I'm totally okay with that! :)
Cheers,

I can't see that happening anytime soon. There has been no indication from Mark that he wants to stop performing, so, until he started talking that way, it is fair to assume he will keep playing live.

Fair to assume until we hear otherwise, yes.

But my point remains that age alone has very little to do with it. And for that, as well as their individuality as people, it's not a fair comparison to say that just because Paul is still doing it at 75, so Mark should be.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. Now where did I put my beer ?
Cheers,

Guy stated today on his forum that Henrik has been in filming again, he didn't say when he was in, but it does look like Henrik is getting a lot of footage, as the filming started at least when Mark was making Tracker. I guess it won't be released anytime soon though, maybe later in the year to avoid clashing with the Eric Clapton documentary.
