A few months back Guy stated that he and Mark had recorded a documentary concerning the Mason & Dixon Line and the song Sailing To Philadelphia, well that documentary is to be broadcast 4th September at 19:30 on BBC1 in the UK. you can read more about it by following the link below, I am sure it will be interesting in terms of Mark and in teams of history.

Here is the link to the YouTube video that has just been put up. Although not much new, I thought it quite interesting, and a lot more complete than what we learned in school history! :P

Mason Dixon

It runs almost 10 minutes.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the link Linda, I thought that was a fantastic little documentary about something that we should all know more about. I think you can really hear the genius of Mark's song writing when you listen to the other people talk about the Mason Dixon line, Mark's lyrics are so insightful. I also los the restrained but beautiful performance of the song, and it looks like he is using his new signature Les Paul, which is sounding amazing. Clearly Mark speaks more confidently when narrating as opposed to just freely talking.

I love Mark's comment:

"These northern boys can certainly put it away" alch

It was good to have something new, as we wait the news for the secret project.

This isn't about Mason and Dixon, but since it is Mark in a TV interview, I thought this would be good place for it. MarkKnopfler.com has a new post about an interview he did on Mike Neville, a TV presenter of North East England. We aren't familiar with him here in the States, but I thought I would mention the new post. It sounds as if Neville has had a lot of influence over the years.

That was really interesting. It is not often you hear Mark talk about someone so warmly. He even used the word legend, not a word he uses lightly!!! I have to confess I have not heard of Mike Neville either, but I live in the South, not North East, but Mark seemed really relaxed and talkative in that interview. I have never seen that clip of Mark on the Mike Neville show before either.

Apparently, Neville died recently, or at least that's what I read elsewhere. That may be the reason for the interview at this time. Or perhaps, he had been ill and that was what triggered the interview. I didn't notice any reference to his having died on that interview.

Mike Neville died on 6th September and he was remembered at The Great North Run yesterday. I do receive Tyne Tees Television and Mike always came across as a lovely, warm man with a great sense of humour. I loved Mark's tribute to him in the interview.

Mike Neville MBE was described as the Godfather of TV news in the North East of England. He presented the North East evening news for many years on BBC's "Look North" before returning to ITV (Tyne Tees) where his career originally started. His wonderful sense of humour meant that he sometimes struggled to keep a straight face when he saw the funny side of a serious news report. He also used to do comedy sketches with a colleague, most notably excerpts from the "Larn Yersel' Geordie" books by Scott Dobson which would appear in the half hour local news shows. He was a legend in this part of the country.

Mike gave up broadcasting due to ill health some years ago, but died after a short battle with cancer.

R.I.P Mike.

More Mark on TV.

I was watching "Even more guitar heroes at the BBC" on one of the UK freeview channels last night
and saw a version of ToL that I hadn't seen before. ( I've since found it on UKTV Play with a search for "even more guitar heroes BBC" - ( part 2 of 2).

It was a recording from the Old Grey Whistle Test, and seemed to be quite "early" after the release of Making Movies, as Hal Lindes was 2nd guitar & Pick Withers was drumming. Mark's guitar tone wasn't that good or well balanced and the song hadn't been worked up to it's full live incarnation, but it was interesting to see a different version.

Do you mean this version:

Tunnel Of Love

I was also watching this the day before you, as it came up on my YouTube suggestions :) I like it because you can see the very rare occasion of Mark playing a non-stringed instrument!!! I know what you mean about the guitar sound, I also found it odd, I don't know if it was a bad recording, or just an idea for a sound Mark was trying out, either way, it is different.

I had forgotten about Mark playing the B3! It was a treat, but too bad one of the crew had to step in and take over on that sustain!

I didn't particularly care for a lot of the sound - his tonality wasn't as highly developed. At least, not like we have come to expect and appreciate. Some of the notes didn't have their usual clarity, kinda pinched sounding, if you know what I mean. And maybe for some reason, he was feeling a bit hurried.

Yep, that's the one.

The tone on the guitar was too "thin" and treble-y and it sounded like he was really plucking the strings too hard. Perhaps he thought his volume was too low and was trying to compensate. In those days he always played the up tempo tracks faster than they were recorded.
