The power of the media is, in my opinion, the largest barrier to bringing the masses round to the concept that socialism or social justice is not something to fear. Its power goes beyond simply influencing MP's, it totally taps into the psyche of the public at large. Anyone who watched question time last week will undoubtedly have been amazed at how the press have somehow managed to turn the fact Miliband got Trade Union support (surely a key facet of any bottom-up political system) into a bad thing, namely that he is 'in the pockets' of the Unions. I'm not recalling this story as a Miliband apologist (far from it), it is excellent evidence however of the grip the media have over the public at large. If anyone has seen Michael Moore's 'capitalism', there is a scene where a priest says he is almost envious of the system, as very often the victims of Capitalism are bigger proponents than the winners. Its obvious why this is; we all agree with a 'free' media, but under capitalism the media are owned by the rich who tell the people what to think, and they duly oblige. I just hope years of Tory cuts shift the public so far to the left they no longer listen to these bastards. |
