Well, I've been kicking this around my head for a while now and would really appreciate your input. Espcially considering how lousy my first attempts were, I'm going to take extra care with this one. It would be a dragon-themed adventure. It is said that decisions shape history, and also that even the smallest choice, once made, can cause a major difference years in the future. Some even say that every choice creates an entire multiverse, complete with gods, heroes and monsters, which at their very start is an exact replica of the original, except for the decision and its consequences. Over the years, these consequences can accumulate and compound until the new timeline is unrecognizeable. Or, perhaps it would be nearly indistinct from the original timeline. On the timeline we're all familiar with (described in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting), there was a mighty human mage empire known as the Imascari. When a plague decimated their population, they decided to kidnap many people from other worlds to be their slaves. To do so, they opened portals to another plane and raided another world. It is said that the world was Earth, and the people were Egyptians. The Imascari worked great magics to prevent all contact with Earth, which kept the Egyptian deities from answering the prayers of their people, but with Lord Ao's help, this magic was overcome and the deities manifested on Faerun. With their help, the slaves revolted and escaped from bondage, forming their own empires of Mulhorand and Unther. But what made the Imascari choose Egypt? Might they just as easily have chosen another nation in another place? Such as, for example, China... The Chinese, faced with the Imascari Barrier that kept them from contacting their gods, might have sought succor from other another source with which they were already familiar--the dragons. A nearby family of gold dragons would not abandon the helpless, disoriented and downtrodden captives, especially when the latter gladly offered to accept the gold dragon patriarch as ruler. Surely, these would prove mighty enough allies for the Chinese captives to achieve freedom from the Imascari, especially if the dragons would introduce worship of the draconic deities who are not constrained by the Barrier. And so it was. Basically, the following is borrowed from the Dragon Magic manual (described starting on page 134 if you have it): As centuries passed, the dragons would shape the new nation in many ways. Dragon pride being what it is, all true metallic dragons would be considered aristocracy, stratified first by age and then by kind. Those who have a dragon connection, be it ancestral (half-dragons, spellscales, sorcerers, etc.) or acquired through dragon-related feats or classes would be accorded the next highest honors, followed by everyone else. Of course, this does not mean that there would be injustice--they would still be ruled by gold dragons, after all. Draconic might be taught in schools as a higher language and perhaps the aristocracy would refuse to communicate in Common, but most non-dragons would probably find it too hard to learn and speak. The adventurers would probably be non-dragons, since nobles might not stoop to such sordid work (but mostly because playing and DMing for a true dragon is a bit daunting to me). Then again, they would be youngsters and teenagers with Alternate Shape abilities would always remain teenagers with Alternate Shape abilities. Perhaps they would be approached by a minor noble (through a servant, most likely) and perform a task for him, gaining recognition among dragons until they finally work for the Gold Patriarch himself. I think all PC's should have some draconic flavor--from as minor as having the Dragontouched feat to as major as being a half-dragon sorcerer. The choices are myriad: Draconic feats or Initiate of Draconic deities feats described in various manuals, even clerics with the Dragon domain or even just worhipping a dragon deity, classes such as Dragon Disciple (DMG), Sorcerer, Dragonfire Adept, etc. Again, I would really appreciate feedback. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Bring 'em. I need advice on the story, the plot, the cultural details--Chinese culture, particularly Ancient Chinese culture not being my strength--and everything else. |

As a cleric/religious-type player, one question I have is what kind of religion there is here? China had Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and their own native pantheon of gods (of which I know very little, besides that it was an imperial court headed by the Emperor of Heaven). Are the gods still inaccessible? If they are, what gods do they worship? Is there any reference to the other faiths listed here? It's a good idea about having dragon-based feats/prestige classes/backgrounds but be prepared to have to provide info for everyone, since I don't think anyone's got the book. Suggestions: I'm trying to think of China-based fiction that I've read which has a good flavour of fantasy. One novel that comes to mind is The Silk Road by Jeanne Larsen which does have dragons involved- as well as everything else. :D One that a friend of mine really enjoyed, and had sequels, was Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was by Harry Hughart. You might look up 'Fantasy novels with a Chinese theme' on Amazon to get a fuller list of fiction. There's a fantasy book I've read in the past year but my memory's faulty and not recalling it! |

Nothing is permanent and even without active interference the Barrier might have deteriorated by RP time. But human lifetimes and patience being what they are, I would not expect religions to continue long in the absence of contact with their deities--if we assume they even had such contact back on Earth. I'd imagine that priests would simply switch to a local--and more responsive--deity that most closely matched their previous god's alignment and portfolio. Then again, I would like very much to inject more Earth flavor into the RP (it would save me sooooo much work making things up :) ). So if a PC would like to receive a vision from one of the Earth deities and lead a revival of that faith, that would be just fine. As for Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, I'm not very familiar with them. Aren't they more philosophies than religions? Do they even have gods? I'll have to research that and if they're only philosophies there should be no problem with carrying them over to Faerun. I guess I could provide the description of some Draconic feats--like Dragontouched, for example--as a fair use of this material. But I would of course encourage you to get the book. There's a very good--if somewhat complex--character generator that I use here. They just added a section with those feats, and elsewhere have many other dragon-flavored options, like Bahamut's Dragonborn race. Thanks for your questions and suggestions. I'll look those books up. |

I don't know much about Confucianism itself (apart from the I Ching), but all three actually do have reference to gods, even though Buddhism and Taoism are often seen as non-deistic in the West (bear in mind that some countries celebrate Buddha's birthday by pouring tea upon his statue, since it was believed to rain tea on that day). Buddhism also has demons, which seem to be simultaneously good and bad. I know it'd be good to have the book, but I have never really been THAT drawn to dragons. You tell me what feats you think would fit my PC, and I'd probably be happy with that. But then, I've never been great on the tech-side of the character (I leave those nitpicky details to the wonderfully knowledgeable Eo). |

Yea, but I don't know how much draconic flavor you'd want, Pam. Do you want to play just a cleric with a Dragontouched feat? Or a cleric of a draconic deity with the Swift Wing prestige class and the Initiate feat for that deity, the Dragon domain and oh by the way the Dragonborn race, the Dragonscale Husk alternative class feature? In any case, here's Dragontouched from Dragon Magic: You have a trace of draconic power, a result of dragons in your ancestry or a spiritual connection between you and the forces of dragonkind. Prerequisite: Cha 11 Benegfit: You gain the dragonblood subtype (see below). You gain 1 hit point, a +1 bonus to Listen, Search, and Spot checks, and a +1 bonus on saving throws against paralysis and sleep effects. In addition, you can select draconic feats as if you were a sorcerer of your character level. The dragonblood subtype from Races of Dragon: basically, you can use magic items only dragons can use normally and can take feats that require that subtype but on the downside it makes you subject to harmful effects that normally only work on dragons. Ana, all I suggested was that all PC's have is some sort of dragon flavor, since they're so prominent and influential there. You can have as little as that feat above or as much as you can gather from Races of Dragon, Draconomicon, Dragon Magic, Complete Arcane, etc. Any feat, class, PrC--heck, even alternate class feature like the Favored of Bahamut/Tiamat which is meant to give Favored Souls dragon flavor--you find that has to do with dragons. I have those books, but if you don't that's just fine. If you'd like, I could look through the manuals after I get the characters and suggest where you might add some flavor. But that's far in the future, actually--when I say this RP is in development, I meant it's just barely entering the concept stage. Let's worry about the characters later, eh? |

As you said, better to worry about the characters later when we're actually closer to a game. I'm not sure how much draconic flavour I'd want because I'd still want some idea as to what to expect in this society, and to see what advantages and limitations they'd present. |

I would have to take a look. My bud has them so I can ask him about them. I dont know about your original idea but it would take place during what time period exactly if we look at the actual history of China? That might give you a starting point. The books I mentioned from 2nd have pretty good details about the classes but more for Japanese I think i.e ninja.samurai,wu jen etc. Maybe we can do some research, DW? |

Anything Dragon like you can use the Draconimacum or something like that it is again 2nd edition but may help with the Dragons. There is also Dragon Mountain box set from 2nd edition as well ;) I am sure there are some 3.5 books about Dragons too I just don't know any(long live downloads ;) ) |

Of the books I have (all 3.5 edition as far as I know) you can get draconic flavor from Draconomicon, Races of Dragon, Dragon Magic, Complete Arcane (draconic feats), Dungeon Master's Guide (Dragon Disciple PrC), Player's Hanbook (sorcerer and bard classes), Monster Manual (half-dragon template), Book of Exalted Deeds (Vassal of Bahamut PrC), Player's Handbook II (Dragon Shaman class). Compete Divine can also be used: Radiant Servant of Pelor PrC--just change it to Radiant Servant of Tamara who has Sun domain and presto! you have draconic flavor. And the Favored Soul class which can be given the flavor by using the Favored of Bahamut variant rule from Dragon Magic. Faith and Pantheons has the Auspician PrC which is written for Tymora/Beshaba worshippers but I see no reason why we couldn't adapt it to clerics of Bahamut or Aasterian, both of whom have the Luck domain. Actually, there are probably many classes out there which could be changed in this manner, by just changing the patron deity it was designed for to a draconic deity, as long as it has the same domain. |

Considering how hard it is to get a game started and to maintain momentum in that game, with enough players motivated enough to post, is making the process of character creation sound really complicated (especially if buying manuals is recommended) such a good idea? Just an idle observation - I know my limits, so I'm no longer joining any more games because dropping out after expressing interest must be just plain annoying to DMs, but I do like to read good games in progress, and this one sounds potentially interesting, but also a potential nightmare to get off the ground. Kudos for wanting to start your own world, but there's an awful lot of work involved there DW! |

Its alot of work involved thats for sure...a whole new world isn't eay to start especially when you have to take bits and pieces from other places i agree. It would be nice to see it get off the ground and i've skimmed over the Complete Arcane as its one of the few 3.5 DnD i have but other than that i'm not that much help to you.... I hope that you do get it off the ground as its concept is something that interests me... :D |

While I do recommend getting some of the books, you could easily make a character with enough flavor using only the SRD (free online or download) and/or the feat which I already described. So don't feel compelled to take advantage of all or any of the options I mentioned. I'd just be happy if we can get this off the ground with enough interested players. |

Well, I have a plot in place and on paper. I feel pretty confident in it, seeing as I pretty much stole it from someone else. :ph43r: Unfortunately, I'm just such a lazy sod that I will probably not do most of the cultural research so we'll probably end up assuming that intervening thousand(s) of years and the influence of dragons pretty much made the people's culture unrecognizable. Sorry if this is something you've really been looking forward to. The game will revolve around six characters. Should there not be that many players, I'll add NPCs with adventurer classes. Should there be more people than that, I'll be happy to adjust the encounters up. So, who's in? |

The problem will be with the other PCs as well, I'm going to play a man! But I don't want him to have a crash on her, it would be strange for me, hitting a woman, even in game! :o |
